Funding provided by NSF OIA 2242829

The EPSCoR funding has allowed SpikeSense to assemble an early proof-of-concept and initially explore the capabilities and potential performance of our hyperspectral imaging approach, something we would not have been able to do without it. The early assembly and testing of the proof-of-concept provides clarity and highlights the key areas that need significant R&D in order to move ahead to a full prototype and then product. This clarity is strengthening our proposals to government agencies and other funding sources as we move forward. — Dr. Eric Gallo, SpikeSense Labs owner

11 A.M. PRESENTATION

Taking the FIRST Step

Robotics teams and local tech companies describe their winning collaborations

FIRST robotics competitions can be just as thrilling as athletic events. This past spring, a two-day regional robotics tournament took over UVM’s Patrick Gymnasium — it was the first time Vermont had hosted a Northeast regional FIRST event featuring high schoolers with FRC robots, the biggest competitors, which often weigh more than 100 pounds. The tournament drew hundreds of fans, many of whom sported buttons or even shirts supporting their favorite teams.

Most youth sports squads rely on some form of corporate sponsorship, but for robotics teams, especially at

the FRC level, that bond is crucial. Bots can cost thousands of dollars to build. Team sponsors help defray the cost and in many cases provide equipment and instruction, too.

That’s a win for the kids and the sponsors. Supporting FIRST teams is an investment in long-term workforce development. Many local tech companies employ FIRST alums.

In this presentation, four teams from across Vermont — and their corporate sponsors — describe their FIRST journeys. Participants include the IBOTS of Rutland and General Electric; Tech Storm from St. Johnsbury and Momentum Manufacturing Group of Lyndonville; Green Mountain Robotics of Chittenden County with Hazelett of Colchester; and Mango Tango from White River Junction, as well as the FLL-level team Camels Hump Coders of Huntington, who will present with their partner, GlobalFoundries.

The AI Will See You Now

Will artificial intelligence help cut health care costs and improve patient outcomes?

Artificial intelligence is transforming our health care system in ways you might not yet realize. This panel discussion brings together three local experts to discuss di erent aspects of this revolutionary process and the opportunities and challenges it presents.

Donnelly also leads a team of IT professionals and brings a unique perspective to his work. He says he is “always placing the people and experience above technology.”

Moderating the conversation are Jaine Perotti, a FIRST alum and robotics engineer from Greensea IQ; and Laura Treers, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at UVM, both of whom will speak about their experiences with FIRST.

Justin Stinnett-Donnelly, chief health information o cer of the UVM Health Network and cochair of the UVM Health AI Council, will discuss how the state’s largest health care provider is using AI to alleviate strain on doctors. A hands-on physician himself, Stinnett-

Ethan Bechtel is an entrepreneur. After graduating from UVM’s School of Business, he helped bring health care into the digital era through early work on electronic health records. He’s cofounder and CEO of OhMD, where he leads a team building AI-powered communication tools that handle routine communication with patients.

Juniper Lovato is an assistant professor in computer science at UVM and a member of the Vermont Complex Systems Institute. Her current research centers on data ethics, fairness, accountability, transparency, the science of stories and open-source ecosystems. Among her projects is a multiyear study to understand lifestyle practices that may impact health and wellness, using the Oura Ring to collect physiological data.

The conversation is moderated by veteran Seven Days sta writer Ken Picard
