Don all ye Santa hats and Rudolph noses, because it's time to visit some local Christmas pop-up bars! There’s nothing better than a room full of festivity; the twinkling lights, warm mugs of spiked cocoa, the smell of peppermint so thick it's like it's been aerosolized, it’s enough to make any Scrooge smile. However, the trek to get to one of these notorious pop-ups can be long and nerve-racking, especially if you are a Georgia native like me and have been hitting the mulled wine a bit too hard to deal with the horrors of Atlanta traffic. Fret not! I’m here to let you know that there are Christmas pop-up bars so close to home, they’re a mere sleigh ride away.
Since Lawrenceville was on the nice list this year, we were gifted the new and sparkling Rreal Tacos, an authentic Mexican kitchen equipped with good eats and enough festive spirit to impress Santa Claus himself. Each year, this taqueria chain decks its halls with perfect baubles and shimmering lights while offering classic Christmas favorites with a Latin twist. Open throughout the entirety of December, Rreal Tacos invites you to sip on specialty cocktails like El Grinch, a delicious apple pucker and cinnamon-spiced margarita, or El Rudolph, a creamy coconut rum drink that will have you picturing chestnuts roasting over an open fire.
Each year, Local Republic, one of Lawrenceville’s longest-standing, locallyowned restaurants, hosts Sleigh on Perry. Now located at the upstairs bar of this beloved gastropub and craft cocktail hub, Sleigh on Perry introduces patrons to a whimsical winter wonderland where glimmering lights adorn the ceilings, the smell of fresh popcorn spreads through the air and there’s a little mistletoe in every doorway (Oh-la-la). Local Republic does not play around when it comes to decking the halls! Everywhere you look lies some form of Kris Kringle memorabilia; it’s like a five-course meal for the eyes and for the Instagram story!
Opening at the beginning of December and running until December 23, Sleigh on Perry aims to transport its guests into a truly magical dimension where one can cozy up with a cocktail like Hans Gruber’s World Famous homemade boozy eggnog. Keep it fresh and order the Peppermint Gin & Tonikkah or dive into the creamy dessert realm with my personal favorite, the Jiminy Christmas, a drink that tastes like a thin mint in a glass! Sleigh on Perry also offers specialty snacks and plays Christmas classics like Home Alone, Elf, Rudolph and more, all projected on the big screen (we love a family-friendly pop-up!).
a taste of our festive homespun fun!
Get ready to jingle all the way because our HoliDAYS in Norcross are in full swing! From holiday shopping to magical carriage rides, we've got a sleigh-load of festive fun waiting for you. Let's sleigh this holiday season together!

One of the best parts about the holiday season is all of the delicious seasonal sweets that you get to indulge in! From gingerbread and sugar cookies to peppermint bark and snickerdoodles, there’s something so magical when the smell of freshly baked sweets fills the air. If you find yourself busy with limited free time to bake your favorite treats, head over to our friends at Bliss-B Bakery to get your fill of decadent holiday cookies.
Located in Braselton, Bliss-B Bakery specializes in handcrafted desserts that are baked fresh to order. They offer a year-round menu of cookies, cakes and other desserts but where they really shine is during the holiday season! During this time of the year, you can get a taste of festive vanilla cakes, gingerbread, guava cookies, dulce de leche and cookie cups. They have a minimum order of four cookies, perfect for trying a variety of flavors.
If you’re hosting a festive party, a magical girls’ night in or looking for the perfect holiday gift, order one of their specialty cookie boxes and tins! These delightful boxes combine the joy of the season through festive packaging and delicious
seasonal dessert flavors. Our personal favorite is their Holiday Cookie Box, which comes with six cookie cups, four guava cookies and four gingerbread cookies. The gingerbread has the perfect level of warm spice and rich molasses flavor, making it the perfect addition to any social gathering, along with the other paired cookies! You’ll be impressed not only with the taste of their cookies but the quality of the presentation.
Bliss-B Bakery doesn’t have a storefront location so you can place your holiday orders through their website or send them an email at BlissBDesserts@gmail.com. Give their decadent sweets a try this holiday season to see why we dig this local bakery!

Looking for the perfect craft to bring the magic of the holiday season into your home? I have three words for you: dried citrus ornaments. If you’ve ended up on the cottagecore side of Pinterest, these beauties have likely ended up on your feed. Dried citrus ornaments are perfect for those who enjoy the aesthetic of natural holiday decor.
The first step is to acquire your preferred citrus! The most common type to use is oranges but many people have experimented with limes, lemons and grapefruits with great results. You can pick up your citrus from a local spot like the Suwanee Farmers market during its winter season. If you can’t make it out to your local farmers market, Living Well Farmers Market is another great place that offers an assortment of fresh produce year-round at their storefront in Downtown Suwanee.
Once you’ve selected your citrus, it’s time to prepare them for the oven! Let your oven preheat to 150°F while you focus on slicing your fruit. I’ve found that slicing the citrus into ¼ inch slices is best to ensure they’re not too thick or thin, as this affects the outcome. Once you’ve sliced all of your citrus into even slices, arrange them onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. You’ll want to let them bake in the oven for 2-3 hours to fully dry out. I recommend making a delicious cup of apple cider or tea while you wait!
After the 2-3 hour mark, check on your fruit to see if it’s dried enough. It shouldn’t be completely shriveled up but at least dry to the touch and stiff. Once they are cooled off, you can grab a safety pin to poke a small hole through the top of the flesh. This is where you can let your creativity run free by choosing either twine or colorful ribbon to string up your DIY citrus ornaments to your tree! The lights on your tree will create a beautiful, warm glow on your ornaments as the light shines through the citrus.

This year, Anna Balkan Jewelry & Gifts celebrates 15 sparkling years in Norcross! Most pieces are handcrafted by Anna herself, with extra treasures from talented artisans she loves. Step inside for a rainbow of colorful, one-of-a-kind designs, layered gemstones and holiday-ready gifts that mix trend with tradition. And don’t miss our Q&A with Anna to hear the story behind the sparkle!
Q: What inspired you to open your jewelry store and how did you get started?
A: “After my daughter was born, I started designing jewelry as a creative outlet, selling to other retailers and at festivals. As my business outgrew my kitchen table, I found a perfect spot in historic Norcross with a beautiful front window. What began as a hobby became my life’s work—a space I love showing up to every day.”
Q: Over 15 years, what’s been the most rewarding part of creating and running your own jewelry business?
A: “Without question, it’s the community—customers who’ve become friends and the connections built through shared stories. Creating from the heart and making it my job is a dream come true. After 15 years in corporate IT, reaching this milestone feels like the best “point of no return,” especially seeing my designs bring joy and become part of family traditions.”
Q: What jewelry trends are you seeing right now that you love?
A: “I love the return to meaningful jewelry—layered, personalized looks with natural gemstones. Color is back, metals are being mixed and pieces reflect emotion and selfexpression rather than fleeting trends.”
Q: Are there any holiday traditions, either personal or in your store, that you’ve kept going all these years?
A: “Every holiday season, the store becomes a wonderland of artisan gifts and community spirit. I host Alice in Wonderland-inspired events like ‘unbirthdays,’ scavenger hunts and Mad Hatter dress-up parties, keeping imagination and joy alive each year.”
Q: Looking ahead, what’s your vision for the store?
A: “After COVID, I began featuring other artisans’ work alongside my own. I see the store 15 years from now as a vibrant destination—where color, style and community thrive, and shopping continues to inspire and connect people.”
It’s easy to see why Anna Balkan Jewelry has been a beloved destination for 15 years. This holiday season, it’s the perfect place to find gifts that sparkle with meaning. Each handcrafted piece tells a story, supports a local artist and adds a touch of magic to your celebrations. Whether for a loved one or a little treat for yourself, visit the store or shop online at annabalkan.com

’Tis the season of giving and if you’re anything like me, you probably have your own festive traditions that make this time of year feel extra special. My family’s tradition was always the annual toy drive. We would pick a name off the Christmas tree, head to the store and spend what felt like hours curating the perfect gift. I’d imagine the kid’s face lighting up as they tore through the wrapping paper—pure magic. That tradition filled my heart every December.
Growing up, my house was always full of animals, from furry dogs and cats to scaly lizards and everything in between. There was always a wagging tail, a soft purr or a quiet scuttle somewhere around the house, and yes, probably a few chewed shoes too. This year, something shifted. Maybe it’s because I got my own puppy earlier this year, or maybe I’ve just grown a little softer for those four-legged friends. Either way, I realized there’s a whole group out there who could use some holiday love too—our shelter pets, who could really use a little extra cheer.
So in a playful twist on my old giving tradition, I decided to channel my inner Santa Paws. I started looking into what local animal shelters needed and discovered a treasure trove of wish lists. The staff and furry residents at Gwinnett County Animal Welfare & Enforcement could really use some help and it doesn’t take much. We’re talking everyday items like towels, fleece blankets, dish soap and leashes. They’re not glamorous, but oh-so necessary.
For the pets themselves, treats, toys, peanut butter (because, duh) and cozy bedding go a long way. Everything you’d want if you were a pup waiting for your forever home or a cat dreaming of endless naps on someone’s couch. Even the smallest donations can make a huge impact and brighten a furry friend’s holiday more than you might imagine.
This holiday season, I’m mixing things up. I’m still spreading joy to little hearts in all shapes and sizes, but I’m also bringing smiles to a few wagging tails and purring friends. It’s a new kind of tradition, one that’s full of joy, fur and maybe a little slobber—okay, sometimes a lot of slobber. Because let’s face it, the holidays are better when everyone, two-legged or four, is feeling loved.

Grab a plate of Christmas cookies and get ready to learn the secrets of Santa Rick!
Rick Rosenthal first set his sights on this jolly career path in 2011, taking on the persona of Santa Rick. He quickly discovered a passion for spreading hope and cheer to children and adults. No matter if they’re a small child or an older individual, Santa Rick treats everyone with the same compassion and kindness. In 2016, he founded the Northern Lights Santa Academy, which is the largest Santa Claus school in the Southeast. This school has a stellar reputation for crafting Christmas professionals who represent the true spirit of Santa.
Santa Rick stays busy through the holiday season! Along with being Santa for the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons, he’s also brand ambassador for an international video chat app that makes Santa accessible to families across the world and visits local communities, including Gwinnett, for special holiday events. He also volunteers for organizations including Big Brothers of America, Boy Scouts of America, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Toys for Tots, United Cerebral Palsy and the Georgia Aquarium.
One of the biggest takeaways from talking to Santa Rick is that he truly embodies the spirit of the holiday season through his compassion and kindness. He takes his role seriously because he wants to make the lives of the children and adults that he encounters better.
If you’re interested in having Santa Rick make your holiday event an unforgettable one, give him a call at 404-936-2888 or visit his website santarick.com for more information!

Back before the glories of two-day delivery, Christmas markets began as a way of survival during the winter, providing communities access to goods that would later become scarce when the chill of the season set in. But, as it's no longer the Middle Ages, we now have modern amenities that make winter just a bit more wonderful! Yet, even with this newfound ease of living, Christmas markets remain a cultural boon to all of us this holiday season.
This year, the City of Lawrenceville has the honor of hosting Christkindl, an authentic and unique German Christmas Market! Inspired by the Christmas markets of the 1500s, the Christkindl Market debuted as a way of introducing Americans to German culture. This market invites patrons to cozy up with a couple of chimney cones and sip on a hot mulled apple cider. Browse the many stalls slinging handmade ornaments, warm winter garments and novel pieces of home decor that will fit right in with your decked halls and decorated trees. The old-world charm of the Christkindl Market is felt in the air as one walks past inviting wooden stalls decorated elegantly with garland and smiling vendors. The Christkindl Market will be open from November 28 to December 24 on the Lawrenceville Lawn!
Looking for a blend of modernity and history in your Christmas Market? Make your way over to the Historic Norcross Christmas Village and experience a whimsical winter wonder that is perfect for the kids! Open on Saturday, December 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Historic Norcross Business Association is decking the village with vintage vibes and new-age fun! Come get your face painted or grab a photo with Santa before caroling with the masses. Visit the petting zoo and cozy up with Dasher and Dancer, then go for a carriage ride and feel like the big man himself.
When you finish at the Christmas Village, take the short ride down to the Atlanta International Night Market (also in Norcross) at Lillian Webb Park. Held December from 12 to13, the Night Market promotes a multicultural winter celebration chock full of global cuisine, handmade goods and dynamic shows featuring international traditions and performances! Educational and rich in fun, the Atlanta International Night Market aims to celebrate a diverse range of cultures and the spirit of unity this holiday season.
Ready to start the holidays early? Visit the Community Christmas Market in Gainesville at the North Hall Community Center on November 7 and 8! With free admission, over 100 vendors and the enticing scent of food trucks and cinnamon spice, the Community Christmas Market is a quality setting to find locallyproduced jewelry, decor, ornaments, essentials and gourmet treats!
If you find yourself wishing for more, take a sleigh ride to the Flowery Branch Winter Market. Kicking off on October 10, the Winter Market will be open every second and fourth Thursday of the month until April, with different offerings on different days, so be sure to keep up to date on their website. A blend of whimsical winter wonder and the homeliness of a farmers market, Flowery Branch promises a wholesome holiday packed with local flavor and live music.
Cherished by all, Christmas Markets serve to pay homage to the communities of the past and preserve precious pieces of international cultures that serve to bring us together during this memorable time of year. So, gather all your friends and family members, don your coziest (and ugliest) holiday sweaters and delve into the timeless realm of open-air Christmas Markets!

It’s official - the most wonderful time of the year is here. Trust us, it’s not just you. We’re also wondering how it’s already the holidays when it feels like summer was five minutes ago (seriously, where did the year go?), but instead of dwelling on how 2025 vanished in a blink, we’re leaning into what’s ahead: a season of joy, connection and a little holiday magic. Here in Georgia, that means packing up the car and heading to Callaway Gardens’ Fantasy in Lights, where the spirit of the season shines the brightest.
Tucked away in Pine Mountain, about 80 miles from Atlanta, Callaway Gardens is beautiful any time of year and offers four seasons of adventure. But come November, Callaway transforms into a twinkling wonderland with more than 10 million lights, a 40-foot tree and 2,500 acres of holiday cheer.
With your choice of four different experiences, you can take the festive 7-mile journey on the Jolly Trolley, in your personal vehicle, the walkthrough experience or in a unique way - on two wheels! Callaway is calling all cyclists on November 14 & 15 for a special, bicycle-only evening where you can pedal through the light show. Prices vary and include special appreciation nights for military, first responders and teachers, so be sure to check their website for dates and prices. Insider tip from the DiG: book your tickets early – weekends sell out fast, and the earlier you go, the lighter the crowds. Callaway also offers stay & play packages with the option for overnight stays in their lodge,
cottages or villas, so consider extending your day trip to stay awhile. Fantasy in Lights shines bright through November 14 to January 4, so there’s plenty of time to experience the magic.
The best part? Your ticket includes daytime garden access, so plan to arrive early and make a full day of it. Make sure to include a visit to the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, where 1,000 or more butterflies flutter freely in one of North America’s largest tropical butterfly conservatories.
After exploring the gardens and butterfly center, the real magic begins once the sun goes down. The Fantasy in Lights experience takes you through glowing forests, glittering tunnels and whimsical displays that helped Callaway earn its third-place spot on Forbes’ list of 7 Spectacular Light Displays That Offer Holiday Magic. Halfway through the route, you’ll find Callaway’s Christmas Village with a holiday market packed with local goodies, photos with Santa for kids and, of course, a much-needed cup of hot cocoa.
Whether you’re chasing family fun, a romantic night out or just an excuse to blast holiday music with zero shame, Fantasy in Lights is the perfect way to make your season sparkle. Because sure, time flies, but slowing down to bask in a million twinkle lights? That’s what holiday memories are made of.

Let’s get down to earth for a second.
My column here at the DiG has always been about going out and doing the undone, finding wonders buried in the dirt and sharing them with you all. My goal has always been to encourage Gwinnettians to seek out ways of living that are not obvious, not repetitive and above all else: not the norm.
When I first heard about the human tradition of Christmas, I was delighted, hearing that a man burrows through chimneys across the world like a flying worm of charity, delivering presents and spreading cheer. Then, I learned that this man consumes nothing but cookies and milk along that joyous journey, and I saw an opportunity to make a change. We in Gwinnett should come together and offer this Saint Nick something different, something to remember us by.
One thing I know about Santa is that he does his work at night. Instead of the sleepinducing glass of milk, why not offer him something to boost his energy? Leaving a Mocha Latte from Break Coffee Roasters in Lawrenceville upgrades his normal drink with a boost of caffeine and a sweet chocolate flavor. If you’d rather give him a palette-cleanser, swing by Haven Bodega in Lilburn to pick up a Fresco, a seasonally-flavored sparkling water mixed with natural syrups, herbs and juices!
For his snack, we in Gwinnett can surely do better than a simple cookie. Sticking with sweetness, you could leave out some Maple Pecan Dream donuts from Duluth’s Luxury Vegan Donuts! With all the flavor of normal donuts from a company that seeks to promote a more sustainable and compassionate world, you’d be reserving your spot on the nice list. If you’d rather give him a treat as cold as the North Pole, grab a Turtle Sundae from Beren’s Frozen Custard in Grayson. The mix of cold custard with hot fudge, caramel, pecans and whipped cream will make your house a highlight of Santa’s night.
When prepping for the night before Christmas, a personal touch goes a long way. Next time Santa passes through your home, make sure he knows he’s in Gwinnett by giving him a little piece of our county to take with him across the world. And while you’re at it, why not make it delicious?
