When Truman Goodwin, known as “Goody,” first arrived in Germany he said it ‘felt like home.’ And, he would come to devote a life-long commitment to Ramstein Air Base and the local community.
Truman Goodwin volunteered for the Ramstein voluntary fire department until 1995 and has become a “true Ramstein native.” He is well-known in the local community as a former U.S. Marine and Airman, who was also stationed at Ramstein Air Base.
Goody joined the U.S. Marine Corps at 19 years old and after six years transferred to the U.S. Air Force as a truck driver.
He first came to Ramstein in 1961 as an Airman and said that the countryside and the weather felt just like his home in Massachusetts. It didn’t take long for a Ramsteiner woman to catch his eye and he met his wife Waltraud. The couple married in 1964, which further devoted him to the area.
They have been married for 61 years this year and have three sons. His first impression arriving in Ramstein was how huge the base was and how laid back Ramstein village was, Goody recalls. Goody’s career brought him and
his family to California, NATO Headquarters in Brunssum, Netherlands, and again to Ramstein Air Base.
He retired from active duty in 1976 when he and his wife decided to settle in Ramstein and raise their sons. Their eldest son John was able to inspire his father to become a firefighter, and Goody became a member of the Ramstein-Miesenbach Volunteer Fire Department family for many years, both actively and passively.
As a retiree he worked full-time for AAFES in different positions as a gas station attendant, sales associate and a supervisor. Then after retiring from AAFES, he continued working as intermittent warehouse worker and also deployed with AAFES two times to Kuwait and Iraq.
Goody’s commitment didn’t end with employment and he volunteered with the Marines at Landstuhl Hospital, which he said he ‘enjoyed tremendously.’ He can say that Ramstein is his home and he considers himself a Ramsteiner.
Goody continues to play a role in the Ramstein and base community and has advice for Airmen who are stationed here today.
“Get to know Germany, its people and culture,” he said. “Visit the local fests and join their organizations. Most of the Germans speak English, but they also appreciate when you learn a little German too.”
The families of his sons, John and Jeffrey, came to visit from the United States to join him on his special ninetieth birthday celebration in September. He was especially
pleased that some Marine veterans were also able to attend the anniversary.
Mayor Ralf Hechler of Ramstein-Miesenbach also extended his warm congratulations and presented a gift basket. He wished Truman Goodwin all the best for the future and, above all, good health. Dr. Walther Altherr, representing the Kaiserslautern district, joined in with these congratulations.

NATO and Norway today marked the opening of the Combined Air Operations Centre Bodø, enhancing the Alliance’s ability to lead and coordinate air operations across the Nordic region, the Arctic, and across the Alliance.
The opening of this CAOC marks a new milestone in demonstrating NATO’s preparedness and unity.
The ceremony, attended by senior Norwegian, Finnish, and Swedish officials and NATO leadership, also marked the formal transfer of authority to Norwegian Major General Tron Strand, the first Commander of CAOC Bodø.
“Today, we inaugurate a critical and pivotal Command and Control node for further securing NATO Airspace,” Air Marshal Johnny Stringer said during the ceremony, Acting Commander of NATO Allied Air Command. “NATO is supremely grateful to the Norwegians for hosting this enhanced C2 capability in the High North.”
CAOC Bodø joins existing NATO CAOCs in Uedem, Germany, and Torrejón, Spain, providing an integrated, redundant command network for Allied air operations. Together, these CAOCs plan, direct and coordinate the activities of NATO Air Forces, monitoring up to 30,000 air movements across European NATO airspace each day.
The addition of a third CAOC in Bodø will enhance operational awareness in the High North and will build critical redundancy into NATO’s air command and control architecture, complementing the other two NATO CAOCs. Together, the three form a resilient network capable of ensuring continuous C2 across all operations. This structure enhances NATO’s ability to conduct dispersed air operations from multiple locations across the Alliance, ensuring flexibility, survivability, and seamless coordination in a complex and contested security environment.
CAOC Bodø will also inherent the Norwegian Quick Reaction Alert mission. Norway has safeguarded the Alliance’s northern skies continuously since 1961 through its QRA, intercepting and identifying unidentified aircraft to protect NATO airspace. With CAOC Bodø assuming ownership, Norwegian and Allied pilots flying F-35 Lightning II fighters will continue a proud legacy of vigilance that began with the F-86 Sabre more than six decades ago.
Although CAOC Bodø’s activation marks the initial phase of its operations, the CAOC is set to gradually assume additional missions and capabilities in the coming months and years.
“The mission task and our area of responsibility will continue to increase as the organization matures and grows,” said Strand, CAOC Bodø’s first commander. “CAOC Bodø will provide the necessary contributions to the future CAOC model. We will contribute credible deterrence for the Alliance, and we will be ready to fight if necessary.”
On Oct. 10, a ceremony was held inaugurating the new CAOC Bodø in Norway. The event in Bodø hosted senior NATO, Norwegian, Finnish, and Swedish leaders. The event also featured music from the Royal Norwegian Air Force Orchestra, an opening film showcasing Allied Airpower in the North, and speeches from representatives of NATO, Norway, and local authorities. The ceremony concluded with a flag-raising, a flyover of a Norwegian F-35A Lightning II, and a tour of the new CAOC for invited guests.

As NATO’s newest node in its C2 architecture, its establishment not only signifies innovation and transformation, but also further enables dispersed multi-domain operations across the Alliance’s 32-member nations, covering nearly 25 million square kilometers of NATO territory. Dispersed operations ensure flexibility, redundancy, and speed of response in any contingency or crisis.
Initially staffed mainly by Norwegian personnel, CAOC Bodø will grow in operational capability alongside CAOCs Uedem and Torrejón. Its activation will further enhance NATO’s readiness to conduct integrated multi-domain operations in the Arctic and High North, where agility, innovation and interoperability are increasingly critical in maintaining peace and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic region. This is of the utmost importance for NATO’s newest operational command, Joint Force Command Norfolk, whose operational responsibilities span from Florida to Finland, representing NATO’s largest area of responsibility.
“The opening of this CAOC marks a new milestone in demonstrating NATO’s preparedness and unity,” said Vice Admiral Doug
Perry, Commander of Joint Force Command Norfolk, during the ceremony. “Alongside Norway and AIRCOM, our collective planning, integration, and readiness will continue to evolve and contribute to stability and security across Europe, the Atlantic, High North and Arctic. I am grateful to Norway for their earnest and deliberate efforts in pursuing this important capability,” he added.
A central element guiding JFC Norfolk’s work is the Deterrence and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area family of plans, with deterrence being at the heart of NATO’s strategy.

to make our armed forces better prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow together.”
Military planners from U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, U.S. Africa Command, Forze armate italiane [Italian Armed Forces] and Tunisian Armed Forces convened from Sept. 14–19, 2025, to initiate planning for
Artificial intelligence was a hot topic at the planning event.
Lead planners challenged attendees to explore innovative applications across the broad menu of exercise events. Participants actively worked towards scenarios which incorporate predictive logistics, autonomous
African Lion 2026, scheduled to take place in April across multiple African locations.
The initial planning event marked the beginning of a multinational effort to shape AFRICOM’s largest annual joint exercise on the continent. This year’s focus centers on the strategic value of training in Africa, particularly in fostering innovation, experimentation and strengthening joint force capacity to tackle modern battlefield challenges.
“African Lion represents a cornerstone of our shared commitment with Tunisia and our partners and allies such as our Italian counterparts,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Corbett Baxter, exercise director for AL26, SETAF-AF. “It is an opportunity to maintain regional security while building readiness and innovating
ground sensing, forensic analysis and AI-decision support systems. Along with air to ground integration, these efforts aim to validate evolving capabilities while maintaining ethical and operational standards.
Ground sensing is a new feature to AL26, providing an opportunity for U.S. and Tunisian forces to experiment with emerging technological capabilities.
“The Tunisians expressed interest in the employment of ground sensors with their Border Response Unit to detect and respond to threats along the border,’” said U.S. Marine 1st Lt. Justin Bandstra, exercise planner for the 2nd Ground Sensor Platoon, 2nd Intelligence Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group. “This interest grew significantly when we discussed employing ground sensors
and scouting tactics in coordination with Tunisia’s Brigade Special Forces in a passive and active defensive capacity.”
Unattended ground sensors come in multiple varieties such as magnetic, infrared and seismic, depending on the need. They provide a mobile defense in-depth capability that can be emplaced, repositioned or recovered in a short time while also providing long-term lifespans.
In addition, the exercise will feature defensive cyber field training, aeromedical evacuation, air rigging and air drops, a rule of law workshop, as well as joint public affairs and civil affairs integration.
Planning efforts focused on integrating emerging technologies into explosive ordnance disposal, counter-improvised explosive devices, and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive scenarios, reinforcing the exercise’s role as a testbed for future capabilities.
A standout feature includes C-130 dirt landing certification — an opportunity rarely available in Europe — offering mission-critical training in austere environments.
“AL26 Tunisia presents the opportunity to land at a real dirt landing strip, offering mission critical training and certifications for our C-130 crews,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Brendan Towlson, airlift planning representative, 37th Airlift Squadron, 86th Airlift Wing, U.S. Air Forces in Europe –Air Forces Africa. “Being based in Europe makes it very difficult to find dirt landing zones, so Africa opens up more possibilities for us.”
Tunisian, Italian and American planners also collaborated on scenarios for special operations forces, reflecting a deepening commitment to shared security responsibilities
and long-term multinational cooperation.
U.S. partnership with Tunisia extends over 228 years dating back to 1797, when Tunisia was among the first countries to formalize diplomatic relations with the newly forged U.S. In 2015, Tunisia became one of only three countries on the continent of Africa to be recognized as a major non-NATO ally of the U.S.
“Our partnership is based on
shared security and stability goals,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Basim Younis, office of security cooperation chief, U.S. Embassy Tunis. “This trust and mutual respect are reflective of our shared vision to enhance joint readiness.”
As planning continues for AL26, SETAF-AF and its partners remain focused on delivering a high-impact exercise that prepares forces for tomorrow’s challenges while reinforcing today’s alliances.

A 17-member team of radar, airfield and weather systems specialists at Kapaun Air Station, Kaiserslautern are responsible for keeping U.S. and allied air fields operational across Europe and Africa.
The European Regional Maintenance Center provides 24/7 technical support for more than 100 airfields, ensuring navigation and landing systems remain functional in any condition. When a fault occurs with a radar or instrument
landing system, the call often routes straight to Kapaun.
“We’re the first line of defense when something goes wrong,” said Master Sgt. Kent Parsons, ERMC supervisor. “If an airfield loses its instrument landing system or a navigational aid starts acting up, air traffic control reaches out to us immediately. Our team either troubleshoots remotely or works with local maintainers to restore the system.”
The Airmen at the ERMC specialize in navigational aids which are the critical systems that guide pilots during takeoff, approach and landing, especially when visibility is limited.
U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Christian Wilson, European Regional Maintenance Center team chief, checks for the correct output power of a Tactical Air Navigation System at Kapaun Air Station, Kaiserslautern, Oct. 9. The ERMC team enables airfields to recover quickly from equipment failures, minimizing downtime and maintaining flight safety.
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. James Allaman, European Regional Maintenance Center technician, performs an alignment on a navigational aid at Kapaun Air Station, Kaiserslautern, Oct. 9. The ERMC consists of 17 Airmen who specialize in maintaining and troubleshooting radar, airfield and weather systems that enable safe aircraft landings in any condition.
“When conditions turn rough, that’s when our work matters most,” Parsons said. “Pilots rely on these systems to get home safely.”
The ERMC works alongside other centers in Japan and Oklahoma City to maintain continuous global coverage. Their mission ensures that a call for help, no matter where from, is answered by a qualified expert who can diagnose and correct the problem quickly.
“We’re a small team with a huge reach,” Parsons said. “During our shift, we’re covering Europe and Africa, and at the same time,

backing up our partners in the Pacific and stateside. It’s a constant relay that keeps global air operations running.”
Much of their work happens quietly, but the effects are visible across multiple theaters. In recent months, ERMC technicians executed emergency repairs at RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom, and Lajes Air Base, Portugal, restoring critical landing systems and allowing mission-essential flights to continue uninterrupted.
“We handle hundreds of service calls each year and well over 400 TDYs a year,” Parsons said. “If a
system can’t be fixed remotely, we send someone on site.”
The high tempo of this team requires a lot of coordination.
“Everyone here wears multiple hats,” said Staff Sgt. Rashad Haugabook, ERMC noncommissioned officer in charge of production control. “We track every job across the region, manage workload and make sure each maintainer has what they need to keep the mission moving.”
The ERMC also prepares Airmen for forward deployed missions by offering hands-on training before they head downrange.

“Before Airmen deploy, we train them here on the same systems they’ll see downrange,” Haugabook said. “That way they’re not walking into something cold.”
The unit’s selectivity is key to its success.
“These positions are handpicked,” Parsons said. “We get applications from across the Air Force and choose the best fit for this environment. Everyone here earned their place and that creates a lot of pride in their work.”
No matter the time or place, Airmen of the ERMC ensure that navigation systems work exactly when they’re needed most.
According to a 2020 census, 191 million Americans — making up 57 percent of the population — have European roots. After Germans, the second largest group is said to be descendants of Irish immigrants, which make up 11 percent of the population of the United States.
In the mid 1840’s the population of Ireland was about 8.5 million inhabitants, with a large part of them living in rural areas as farmers who mainly cultivated potatoes. In the early 1840’s a blight infected potato crops leading to bad harvests throughout Europe. The blight is a fungus which infects the leaves and stem, turning the potato into a mass of pulp. This not only led to starvation and disease in Ireland itself, but also caused social unrest and about 100,000 deaths throughout the mainland of Europe as well.
The most severely affected areas in Ireland were in the West and South, where the Irish, or Gaelic, language was dominant. The period became known as a Drochshaol, translated as a bad life in Gaelic. Overall, the effects lasted up until 1855 and is today referred to as the Great Hunger, the Irish Famine or just the Famine.
During this period about one million people died of starvation or diseases that came along with malnutrition. The worst year was 1847, which became known as Black 47 and caused the population to decrease by 25 or more percent, in some areas up to 67 percent. In addition to the populace facing hunger, this also led to an increase of petty crime. Theft of a loaf of bread could lead to imprisonment, mainly in England due to Ireland being under English occupation.
Prisons in England were overflowing and since the crown was in the process of colonizing Australia, a person could easily find themselves being deported to Sydney. It is confirmed more than 40,000 convicts were sent to Australia, often sentenced to working on farms for seven years. Some Irishmen may have returned, but many just stayed and this accounts for the high number of Irish descendants in Australia. More than two million people, 9.5 percent of the Australian population, reported Irish ancestry in a 2021 census.
Between 1845 and 1855, at least one million people left Ireland via packet ships, steamboats and barques. The era is noted as one of the greatest exoduses from an island in history. Some emigrants were so poor they literally offered their last shirt for passage to the United States or Canada and boarded famine ships, often referred to as coffin ships. The vessels were in an unsea-
worthy state, had a lack of clean drinking water, poor sanitary conditions and enforced the spread of disease. It is noted between 20 to 50 percent of passengers died during or shortly after their perilous 3,000mile voyage. A female humanitarian organization in New York was highly alarmed but determined to help. They welcomed the ships with clothes, blankets and care packages of food and necessities upon arrival.
In addition, many tenants were evicted from their lots by their English landlords as they could no longer pay their annual dues, usually in the form of potatoes or other vegetables. Their last resort was to move into a workhouse or offer hard labor for food working on schemes, such as heavy construction projects building roads. Some were forced to pawn their clothes and ended up freezing in a lack of appropriate clothing or died of mere exhaustion. By 1847, a workhouse in Skibbereen was so overcrowded that one person was allotted two square feet to live and sleep on, while others passed away on the streets and often enough had to be buried in mass graves.
There were also a few initiatives in Ireland to alleviate the situation by opening soup kitchens throughout the nation. One of the many was in Skibbereen. Skibbereen is located in the Southwestern part of Ireland, which was one of the most poverty stricken and impacted counties. The city operates a heritage center with an exclusive display dedicated to the Famine Story and
a genealogical section where staff members can assist in tracing your roots. It also displays an original recipe for a soup, where many a starving soul received one bowl of the broth per day.
See https://skibbheritage.com for further information
On a more positive note, there were also humanists who made instrumental efforts in supporting the Irish during this devastating time. The Jeanie Johnston was a three-mast barque, built in 1847 in Quebec, Canada, and was originally intended as a cargo ship. It quickly switched its purpose to transport people and provide relief from the famine instead. She made her maiden voyage from Blennerville in Tralee, County Kerry, with 193 passengers on her voyage to Canada in 1848. Humanitarian captain James Attridge joined the ship and made 16 transatlantic voyages between 1848 and 1855. During these voyages, Attridge moved 2,500 passengers, without a single loss, and returned to Ireland with timber on board.
A remake of the historic ship can be visited and its history explored in Dublin. The ship is docked on the River Liffey alongside the Famine Memorial on Customs House Quay in remembrance of the country halved through death and emigration.
As word spread around the world, many countries offered monetary donations and Native Americans in the United States sent
shiploads of corn to the island. Additionally, the Choctaw tribe raised $170, equal to $6,200 today, in an effort to help the starving Irish. A sculpture in the form of feathers is located in Cork, Ireland, to commemorate this act of kindness.
Irish immigrants were not always warmly welcomed. Many found themselves in gloomy ghettos or poor slums of large cities such as New York, Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia, which also served as immigration ports. Most Irish immigrants pulled through, working jobs such as constructions, garbage removal staff, as factory workers or entertained passersby with traditional music.
Some ventured on and founded cities such as Dublin, Georgia, and Butte, Montana, where 25 percent of inhabitants claim to have Irish ancestry. Irish people were instrumental in helping to build and develop large cities with
muscle power, perseverance and their well-known sense of humor.
Following generations managed to create a strong foundation in society and eventually prosper, while some families came to wealth and engaged in political life.
One widely known family is the Fitzgeralds, originally from County Limerick, who immigrated during the Great Famine between 1846 and 1855. Some married members of the Kennedy

clan, another group of Irish immigrants and their descendants. Their most famous character was President John F. Kennedy, who was proud of his lineage and stated the following during his trip to Ireland in 1963.
“When my great grandfather left here to become a cooper in East Boston, he carried nothing with him except two things: a strong religious faith and a strong desire for liberty,” said Kennedy. “I am glad to say that all of his great-grandchildren have valued that inheritance.”
The Irish not only brought their faith and optimistic mindset to the United States, but also music that shaped history. Some country music rhythms find their origins in traditional Irish tunes with fiddles and drums. The largest Irish festival, known as St. Patrick’s Day, is dedicated to Patrick, who was instrumental in Christianizing the island in the fifth century. Every
year, the Chicago River turns green March 17 and gives occasion for large parades and bustling parties in green.
Another tradition brought by the Irish is Halloween, originally adapted from the Celtic celebration of Samhain and observed on the eve of All Saints Days on October 31. Whiskey brought from Ireland and Scotland served as forerunners of modern distilleries today, not to forget Irish stew or Guinness beer.
A number of other prominent characters have Irish roots, such as George Clooney, Barack Obama and Mariah Carey. And, last but not least, over 800 email addresses on the Air Force global system begin with the prefix “Mc”, such as McFarland and McIlrath, in addition to a number of O’Connell, O’Brian, Kennedy and Murphy.

“Military Brat:” Do you know where the term comes from?
by Katie Lange Pentagon News
We’ve all heard the term “military brat“ before. It pertains to those children who grew up in military families.
“Brats“ wear the name like a badge of honor, often because of the moves, stressors and cultural experiences that make them more resilient than their civilian counterparts.
But outside of the military, the word brat is often considered derogative. So it made me wonder — where did the term “military brat“ originate?
To find out, I reached out to the folks at National Defense University Libraries, who did some research for me. It turns out the origin of the term is still pretty unclear, but there are a lot of interesting theories behind it, and most of them originate in Britain.
Since we couldn’t find anything definitive, I figured I’d tell you about some of those theories.
BRAT could be an acronym for British Regiment Attached Traveler
I first found this theory published in a 2011 blog by retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael M. Dunn, who was the president of the Air Force Association at the time. Dunn, who had also been the president of NDU, had asked a researcher to find the origin of the term.
One came through, discovering a book published in 1921 that attributed the saying
to the British army. It explained “BRAT“ as a status standing for British Regiment Attached Traveler, and it was assigned to families who were able to travel abroad with a soldier. Eventually, it just referred to military children. But the term stuck, and was adopted in many places around the world, including in the U.S.
While the researchers I spoke to at NDU couldn’t find that particular citation that Dunn mentioned, it’s a pretty interesting story. And other published researchers have also traced the acronym to the phrase British Regiment Attached Traveler.
Earliest References Were From the 18th Century
Dr. Grace Clifton, a professor at Open University in the UK, has done research with the U.S. Army’s Dr. Becky Powell into the origins of the term.
Clifton found reference to a song written in 1707 for a satirical play called “The Recruiting Officer“ that described soldier life and that of their dependents. Back then, married soldiers were divided into two categories: the lucky few who were allowed to have their families live in the barracks and be taken care of by regimental funds, and those whose families had to live outside the barracks. The song referenced the latter as being “brats and wives.”
The lyrics may have been the first reference to brat in relation to military families. But it also may have referred to any children. So, that’s still a bit of a mystery.
A Contraction for ‘Barrack Rat?’
Clifton said the term “barrack rat” was also used at the end of the 18th century in the U.K. when discussing stories about the lives of children in army barracks, so it’s possible that the two words were turned into a contraction to create the term brat.
“Barrack rat” also surfaced in “A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English.” It cited the book “Old Soldier Sahib” written in 1936 by Frank Richards, a British soldier who detailed his experiences while stationed in India and Burma during the early 20th century. In that book, Richards said “children born in barracks were referred to as ‘barrack-rats:’ It was a wonder to me how the poor kids survived the heat, and they were washed-out little things.”
Researchers at NDU also told me they were able to trace “Army brat” back to 1942, where it appeared in a military slang publication called “The War Dictionary.” It defined the term specifically in regards to the children of Army officers, and it said the term was one of endearment.
Trent University’s Dr. Jennine HurlEamon has also been researching childhood during the wars of the 18th century.
“I must confess that I have come across no archival or early print material as yet that offers a clear indication of how the term ‘brat’ emerged,” she said.

Throughout center fielder Joe DiMaggio's years with the New York Yankees, 1936 to 1942 and 1946 to 1951, the team won nine World Series championships, and DiMaggio set a record for the longest hitting streak — 56 games from May 15 to July 16, 1941, a record still unbroken by any Major League Baseball player.
While away from the Yankees for three years, DiMaggio served in the military during World War II.
On Feb. 17, 1943, DiMaggio enlisted in the Army Air Forces in San Francisco. He then went to Santa Ana Air Base, California, for training.
Before entering the service, he earned about $43,000 a year as a baseball player, and as an Army airman, his annual salary dropped to a meager $600. DiMaggio reportedly applied for combat duty but was rejected and instead served out his enlistment stateside as a physical education instructor.
DiMaggio also played for the Armed Forces All-Stars, managed by baseball great Babe Ruth, who was a
post-World War I soldier in the 104th Field Artillery Division of the New York Army National Guard.
In 1944, DiMaggio was transferred to Honolulu. On Sept. 14, 1945, he received a medical discharge, a type of honorable discharge, because of chronic stomach ulcers. He got out as a staff sergeant.
The baseball champion eventually got his wish of landing in a combat zone. In 1966 and later in 1967 during the Vietnam War, DiMaggio visited South Vietnam to boost morale for the U.S. troops and for those at the base hospital recovering from their wounds.
DiMaggio was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955, with a lifetime batting average of .325 and 361 home runs. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Gerald R. Ford in 1977.
American folk music duo Simon & Garfunkel paid tribute to DiMaggio, who is mentioned in their 1968 song, “Mrs. Robinson.”
A month after DiMaggio’s death in 1999, the duo sang the song in Yankee Stadium.
Musician Billy Joel also paid
tribute to DiMaggio, including his name in his 1989 hit song, “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
DiMaggio was born in Martinez, California, Nov. 25, 1914, and died in Hollywood, Florida, March 8, 1999.

QUIRNBACH PFERDEMARKT
NOV. 12, 9.45 A.M. UNTIL EVENING, QUIRNBACH
A festival for horse lovers and tradition enthusiasts – the Quirnbach Horse Market. Every year on the second Wednesday in November, the tranquil town in the West Palatinate region transforms into a lively meeting place. This is when the 500-person village literally gets its hooves churning. In the middle of the week, animal lovers, market visitors, and revelers from near and far flock to the town. The traditional Quirnbach Horse Market has a long history – since 1876, it has attracted around 15,000 visitors annually, making it one of the most important horse markets in Rhineland-Palatinate. The market begins early in the morning with the
main attraction: the horse awards ceremony. Here, owners present their magnificent horses – donkeys are also welcome – to a jury of experienced judges. This event is particularly interesting for recreational riders. In addition, the awards ceremony is complemented by show acts to make the program as diverse as possible. Numerous stalls at the flea market invite you to stroll, discover, and enjoy everything from regional products to handicrafts to culinary specialties. Another highlight of the market is the traditional lottery, where attractive prizes can be won. The large festival tent provides a cozy atmosphere, where people celebrate together with music, Palatinate specialties, and drinks. The mornings are more traditional. Then, with brass music playing, the tent becomes a brunch-like affair. In the evening, there’s a lively party atmosphere. The Horse Market is more than just a market – it’s a place of living traditions where history, conviviality, and rural culture come together. The event is ideal for families, nature lovers, and culture enthusiasts who enjoy authentic Palatinate experiences in a rural atmosphere. It’s worth a visit – not just for equestrian fans!

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Wai Kin Tee, a unit supply specialist assigned to the 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, receives his Expert Soldier Badge at the Expert Soldier Badge and Expert Field Medical Badge graduation hosted by the 21st Theater Sustainment Command at Baumholder, Oct. 3. The badge represents the culmination of rigorous training, tactical excellence, and exceptional proficiency in warrior tasks and drills.
Story and photo by Sgt. Griffin Payne 21st Theater Sustainment Command
Soldiers assigned to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command tested their tactical expertise and mental toughness during Expert Soldier Badge and Expert Field Medical Badge testing at Smith Barracks throughout September and early October.
The multi-week event brought together volunteers from across the command to take on two of the Army’s most challenging individual assessments. Candidates trained and tested under pressure, demonstrating technical competence, physical endurance, and precision execution in order to earn badges that represent combat readiness and professional excellence.
“All the Soldiers are showing high levels of proficiency,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Andrew A. Decola, EFMB NCOIC and senior enlisted advisor for the 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion.
“Everyone who trains and tests here leaves better prepared, and that directly builds combat-ready formations.”
Modeled after the Expert Infantryman Badge, the ESB and
EFMB require Soldiers to master warrior tasks, battle drills, and military occupational specialty-specific skills with minimal error. The test includes the Expert Physical Fitness Assessment, day and night land navigation, and multiple tactical lanes focused on weapons handling, medical aid, and patrol operations.
The EFMB, reserved for medical personnel, carries even stricter standards. In addition to core requirements, EFMB candidates are evaluated on complex medical lanes involving triage, tactical combat casualty care, and casualty evacuation under fire, often under time constraints and combat simulations. With a historic pass rate below 20 percent, the EFMB remains one of the most demanding qualifications in the Army.
“More Soldiers are becoming confident with their weapons and gear,” said Sgt. Phili Prin, an E2B grader, assigned to the 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion.
“E2B gives them the repetitions they need to perform without hesitation. By the end of test week, you see them locked in.”
The ESB, introduced in 2019, offers non-infantry, non-medical Soldiers the opportunity to validate their combat proficiency on

par with their infantry and medical peers. The program promotes a culture of standards-based training and reinforces the Army’s focus on building lethal, disciplined formations.
“ESB keeps my skills sharp on basic Soldier tasks, and allows me to revisit the basics,” said Staff Sgt. Ivan Salazar, an ESB candidate, assigned to the 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “It also supports my training and enables me to assist others in my unit.”
Staff Sgt. Ali Andrade, an ESB grader, assigned to the 16th Sustainment Brigade, echoed the importance of the program. “ESB helps develop Soldiers into leaders by building greater proficiency in Warrior Tasks and bringing added lethality to their units,” Andrade said.
The culminating event, a timed 12-mile ruck march, tested each candidate’s endurance and determination. Those who crossed the finish line in under three hours earned more than a badge. Air Force 2nd Lt. Jiayu Shao transitions from research assistant to
MD/PhD candidate, bringing unique insights to military medicine.
When Jiayu Shao raised his right hand in June to take the oath of office, he wasn’t just becoming
a U.S. Air Force officer—he was fulfilling a dream decades in the making. After immigrating to the United States in 2001, Shao began his journey at the Uniformed
Services University as a research trainee. This summer, with one of his longtime mentors, U.S. Air Force Col. (Dr.) Christopher Vojta, administering the oath, he officially transitioned from research assistant to 2nd lieutenant and physician-scientist-in-training.
Shao first came to USU as a research trainee through a National Institutes of Health program, drawn by strong recommendations for associate professor of Radiology Dr. Doug Morris’s pioneering MRI research. The hands-on mentorship of Morris, Dr. Vincent Ho, Chair of USU’s Department of Radiology and Bioengineering, and Col. Vojta convinced him to stay. “As an M.D./Ph.D. candidate, you are committing to a very long time at whatever institution you choose to join,” Shao noted, explaining that their investment in his success was key.
That supportive environment allowed Shao to contribute to groundbreaking innovation at the heart of military medicine. He became a key part of the MAGNUS program, a state-of-the-art, headonly MRI scanner developed by GE and USU’s Radiology Department. The prototype’s powerful magnetic gradient allows it to capture images with higher resolution in less time than a traditional scanner, a critical leap for Traumatic Brain Injury research. gave Shao invaluable experience in hardware-level troubleshooting and innovation.
This direct work on technology designed to help service members inspired a deeper calling. His research experience not only shaped his decision to serve in uniform, but also gave him perspective on the people he aims to help. Commissioning into the Air Force’s medical service, he says, is “one of the ultimate ways to serve your country and community altruistically.” Now, as both a researcher and an officer, Shao believes his background will be instrumental in advancing diagnostic tools and hopes to one day serve as a flight surgeon, working closely with air crews.
That sense of purpose was hard-won. Shao’s path to medicine came later in life and was interrupted by setbacks, including the pandemic, but those challenges taught him resilience. He came to see that failure is part of the process—a lesson equally true in the lab and in life—and one that will continue to guide him as a physician-scientist.
For those considering a similar path, Shao’s advice is simple: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions.” He emphasizes the importance of finding a research environment that fosters curiosity—a quality he believes is essential for growth as both a scientist and a physician.

Country roads, take me home…
Germany has wonderful landscapes and picturesque roads that lead to the small villages and towns. We all want to arrive safely at home. But, the days are getting shorter, leaves are turning red and yellow, rain and fog is on its way.
Rain, fallen leaves and fog may lead to slippery road conditions and pedestrians or bikers can easily be overlooked.
To avoid tragic accidents, we have put together a few tips to make driving safer:
• Have an overview – make sure your headlights and windows are clear at all times.
• Drive carefully and slowly depending on the situation.
• Winter tires are also useful in autumn, get a head start and mount them early.
• Be aware of wild animals crossing. Typically, deer, fox and wild boar tend to cross roads in early evening around sunset or during early morning fog, especially in woody areas.
• If it is stormy, avoid parking under trees, as falling branches may damage your car.
• Last but not least, as a pedestrian or biker, wear colorful clothes with reflectors to ensure that you are seen by drivers. GACO wants you to feel at home in the KMC - let us help
HAUNTED GERMANY from Page 1
well, forbidding (check out the Grimm Brothers’ original tales, for proof that they agreed). And though not everyone appreciates that creepy feeling you get on the back of your neck when entering a haunted house, some people do. If you’re one of them, then one of these places might just be for you!
Haunted Castles in the Pfalz Forest
If you’ve been in Germany for long, you probably know that autumn hikes can turn from tranquil to terrifying in the blink of an eye. Or, more accurately, in the setting of a sun. Once the shadows start to come out, then the woods can feel full-on Hansel and Gretel.
That goes double for the castles in and around the Pfalz Forest, all of which are located an easy day trip away from the KMC. While nearly every castle in Germany has a ghost story of some kind (granted, there was an unfortunate amount of torturing, killing, and imprisoning in medieval German castles), here are three good places to start.
Burg Nanstein in Landstuhl is easy to access and has quite the bloody history. Franz Von Sickingen, a notable 15th century German knight, was crushed to death
under a pile of rubble after unsuccessfully picking a fight with the Archbishop of Trier and his cannons. Burg Beilstein, which is just south of Kaiserslautern, makes for a perfect late afternoon autumn hike. You can arrive just as the shadows get long, and reflect on the legend of a 12th century girl and her ghost companions who thwarted a pair of forest bandits. Finally, Burg Bewartstein, an hour south of Kaiserslautern on the French-German border, bills itself as a legendary robber baron castle…and lives up
to the billing. It only accepts cash (proper for any robber baron), has a castle ghost (of medieval origin, naturally), and has tons of dark nooks and crannies.
Many people think that the most horrifying thing about Stuttgart is the traffic. While traffic in the lovely Baden-Württemburg city to the south can be daunting, the city also abounds in specters.
Fortunately, thrill seekers have a great way to get the inside scoop about Stuttgart’s ghosts, thanks to the Stuttgart Ghostwalk Tour. The tour is well worth the €15 (€10 for children ages 6-16). Checking in at around 90 minutes, the tour winds by the Old Castle, the Market Hall, and the Collegiate Church. Get ready to learn about headless horsemen, bad monks, and twilight ghosts.

It makes sense that Munich might seem haunted, especially once Oktoberfest fades to a close and all those jolly people become frowning shadows of their former festive selves.
Jokes aside, Munich offers one of the best ghost tours in Germany (the “Munich Ghosts and Spirits Evening Walking Tour”). You’ll learn about Munich’s supernatural side (who knew there were so many ghosts there?), as well as its historical dark side. The tour can be pricy (around €50 per person) but actually provides pretty decent value, especially since it doubles as a two-hour city tour with an excellent guide and three shots of, well, liquid spirits.
Ghastly Nuremberg
Even at the best of times, Nuremberg can be a little spooky. Old buildings, a checkered history, that gnarly medieval dungeons museum? Oh yeah. Definitely haunting.
And once late October hits, things get even spookier. One of the best ways to learn all about Nuremberg is to sign up for the Nuremberg Ghosts and Gallows tour. It takes place at night, is led by a professional guide, and covers a very wide range of scary stuff (from supernatural to extraterrestrial to the terrible stuff that humans can do to one another). It will be an evening you won’t forget, guaranteed.
The Devil’s Bridge
This one is kind of a stretch, in many ways. It’s a long way from Kaiserslautern (7 hours by car). And it isn’t exactly haunted, at least not in the traditional sense.
But, dang. The Rakotzbrücke (Devil’s Bridge), located in Gablenz, mere kilometers from the Polish border, is awesome. As in, awesome in every way. Structurally, it’s a marvel. When the water beneath it is clear, it forms a perfect circle with the reflection.
And the legend behind its creation inspires awe, as well. Allegedly, the engineering was so difficult that the devil had to be brought in to help finish the bridge in the early 1860s. Rather than take a cut from the subpar architects who couldn’t get the job done, the devil got the soul of the first poor person to walk across it. No word on who that was. But if you do visit, you should be safe!
