ANDREW HARPER JOURNEYS
In this edition, you will find itineraries inspired by our editors’ travels, featuring a blend of cuisine, adventure, authentic cultural experiences and, of course, luxury. This issue of TRAVELER invites you on an unforgettable journey through South Africa’s captivating safari lodges and wine estates; California’s coastal landscapes and top-notch dining; Northern Italy’s exquisite lakes and spectacular palace hotels; and our favorite Caribbean destinations for a warm-weather getaway. Our dedicated travel team is ready to assist you in customizing every detail of your trip, including flights, hotel bookings, dining experiences and excursions. Your journey starts here.
SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa has it all: stunning landscapes, incredible wildlife sightings, world-class wineries and restaurants, and some of Africa’s best hotels. This itinerary will let you discover the cultural treasures of Johannesburg, the epic scenery of the country’s top wildlife reserves and the gastronomic highlights of Cape Town and the Cape Winelands.
CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
Along California’s rugged coastline, life takes on a slower pace. With this road trip from Mendocino to Monterey, you’ll stop to savor the flavors of some of the state’s finest wineries and restaurants. You’ll start in San Francisco before heading north through Napa and Sonoma and back down along the coast to one of our favorite properties of all time, the Post Ranch Inn.
NORTHERN ITALY
Glamour reigns supreme on a trip through some of our favorite places on earth. Start your journey in cosmopolitan Milan before continuing through the lakes: Orta, Como, Iseo and Garda, staying in opulent villas and dining at Michelin-starred restaurants. Finally, you’ll end up in Venice, cruising through the canals to discover the city’s secret churches and art exhibits.
plus Q+A WITH BILL BENSLEY
Step inside the wild and whimsical world of hotelier Bill Bensley, whose glamorous and idiosyncratic properties (including the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui in Thailand, Capella Ubud in Bali and Shinta Mani Wild in Cambodia) are some of our highest-rated Asian resorts.
THE BEST OF THE CARIBBEAN
Crisp fall air has us longing for a beach escape. This roundup of our recommended Caribbean hideaways offers the chance for an epic island-hopping holiday or a romantic weekend getaway.

SOUTH AFRICA
WILDLIFE, WINE TASTING + METROPOLITAN WONDERS
With breathtaking safari lodges, spectacular wine country, scenic beaches and dynamic cities, South Africa offers an incredible range of activities. Start in Johannesburg before discovering the country’s best safari lodges, choosing between standout options in Sabi Sands, Kruger, Phinda and Madikwe. Next, you’ll relax in the Franschhoek Valley, arguably the most scenic wine-growing area in the world. Finally, explore Cape Town’s dramatic mountains, white-sand beaches, subtropical gardens and colorful downtown district. Our safari experts in the Travel Office can arrange a tailor-made itinerary that combines the best of South Africa’s diverse experiences.

JOHANNESBURG
STAY Recover from the long journey at Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa, our top-rated property in Johannesburg. Nestled on 10 acres of manicured grounds in the desirable residential suburb of Sandhurst, this elegant boutique hotel was formerly a private mansion. The interior features stylish contemporary African décor, notably in its stunning lobby. Alternately, consider Fairlawns Boutique Hotel. The villa’s European-style guest suites come with large windows, high ceilings, balconies and marble baths with heated floors.
DINE Saxon Hotel’s Qunu restaurant, serving contemporary African cuisine, uses ingredients from the property’s vegetable garden.
EXPLORE Spend your first day relaxing at Saxon Hotel’s spa and the dazzling outdoor infinity pool. The Travel Office can arrange tours of the city, including the Wits Art Museum, which brings together a fascinating collection of more than 12,000 items, with works dating from the fourth century to the present. In the Kramerville section of town, Amatuli Artefacts sells an extraordinary selection of African crafts, furniture, art and decorative pieces.
6 NIGHTS
ON SAFARI
STAY+DINE+EXPLORE
From Johannesburg, you’ll begin your safari. To see more animal species and experience different environments, we recommend combining stays at two or more lodges. Kruger National Park and the surrounding private concessions are where you’ll find many of our favorite safari lodges. We also recommend two lodges a short flight from Kruger (see map). No matter which lodges you choose, you’ll experience game drives and bush walks rich with sightings of large animals. All meals are included, and many lodges offer both fine dining and casual barbecue dinners.
THORNYBUSH
The lavish Royal Malewane is set within the private Thornybush Game Reserve along the western fringe of Kruger National Park. Open-air living and dining areas are decorated with British Colonial-style furnishings, African tribal artifacts and Persian carpets.
SABI SANDS
Less than two hours from Thornybush is the renowned Sabi Sands Game Reserve.
The extravagant &Beyond Tengile River Lodge is one of South Africa’s finest lodges. Its nine suites are the size of houses, complete with furnished riverview terraces, gas fireplaces in the living rooms, airy baths with indoor and outdoor showers, and lengthy private infinity pools.
And the Singita lodges (Boulders, Ebony and Lebombo), located in or near Sabi Sands, are arguably some of the finest in Africa and would make a dramatic safari finale.
KAPAMA
A drive of around three hours north takes you to Jabulani Safari, an eight-accommodation lodge with traditional décor featuring canvas accent walls, woodburning fireplaces, freestanding tubs and decks with loungers and plunge pools.
Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa
KLASERIE
Less than two hours from Jabulani, Kateka, located in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, has a contrastingly contemporary style with a lounger-lined infinity pool that juts dramatically into the landscape, pointing toward a water hole often visited by wildlife.
PHINDA
If you have more time, consider adding on a visit to Phinda Forest Lodge, located in a private game reserve near the coast (a short flight from Kruger) that’s notable for its populations of lions and cheetahs. The 16
accommodations have a “Zulu-Zen” design and stand amid a rare sand-forest ecosystem, while public spaces face a wildlife-rich swath of open veld.
MADIKWE
Alternatively, Mateya is a strikingly designed enclave in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, an hour by light aircraft northwest of Johannesburg. Five luxurious, air-conditioned thatched suites feature handcrafted mahogany furnishings, open-air showers and sundecks with infinity pools, and uninterrupted views of the water hole and plains.

CAPE WINELANDS
STAY After a week of early-morning game drives, relax in wine country. Choose between La Residence, an exuberantly lavish Tuscan-style villa nestled amid a 30-acre wine estate, or the more classic Babylonstoren, a stylish inn on a restored Cape Dutch farmstead.
DINE Franschhoek has become a gastronomic center, and there are numerous exceptional restaurants. For dinner, consider La Petite Colombe at Leeu Estates, the sister restaurant of world-renowned La Colombe in Cape Town. At La Residence, the opulent dining room serves excellent seasonal cuisine, and, as you might expect, it offers an extensive wine list. Dining options
at Babylonstoren include Babel, a farm-to-table restaurant that employs ingredients sourced from the property.
EXPLORE More than 100 wineries and numerous Cape Dutch farmsteads dot the spectacular landscape of the Cape Winelands. South Africa’s wines are world-class. Cap Classique is the local sparkling wine, made in a similar method as Champagne. Chenin Blanc produces superb whites. Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux grapes grow beautifully. And take the opportunity to try a wine or two made from Pinotage, South Africa’s (controversial) signature grape variety. In between wine tastings, explore the delightful main street

of Franschhoek, with its bookstores, galleries and antiques shops, and then have lunch at one of the small bistros. Consider visiting the elegant Rupert Museum, showcasing modern and contemporary South African art, or taking a gentle hike in the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, situated in part of a UNESCO-declared biosphere reserve with glorious views of Franschhoek.
DETOUR
Before returning to Cape Town, consider adding on a night or two at a relaxing coastal lodge. Birkenhead House is a stylish contemporary boutique hotel on a rocky promontory overlooking Walker Bay and two attractive beaches. The 11 studio suites are contained within three houses, and all have splendid views of the ocean, nearby mountains or both. A wall of glass in the hotel lounge provides a view of the bay, which is frequented by southern right whales from July through December. At Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, two lodges and two villas are set on a hillside with a dramatic view over the dunes of Walker Bay. Large bedrooms provide fireplaces, four-poster canopy beds, private wooden decks and spacious baths with soaking tubs.

CAPE TOWN
STAY End your South African escape in Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The 125-year-old 198-room Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel has historic character, commendable restaurants and 9 acres of gardens and lawns with two swimming pools. Alternately, the architecturally dramatic 28-room the Silo Hotel, above the adjoining Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), has stylish lodgings with balconies that offer sensational views over the waterfront, the marina and the South Atlantic. A private art collection augments the colorful interiors. Nearby, the newly renovated Cape Grace is also a fine option. The 112 accommodations are large, comfortable and well-appointed with unique decorative objects.
DINE Eating out in Cape Town is a great pleasure. Pier serves one of my favorite tasting menus in the city from a second-floor dining room overlooking the V&A Waterfront. Fyn, a fashionable venue just off Church Square in the City Centre neighborhood, serves my other favorite. If you make a day trip to Constantia, consider lunch at Beyond, which offers contemporary South African cuisine with views of vineyards backed by mountain ridges.

EXPLORE It’s not difficult to fill one’s time in Cape Town. Sites associated with Nelson Mandela — such as Robben Island, where he was kept prisoner — often top travelers’ itineraries. A (strenuous) hike or cable-car ride up to Table Mountain provides sensational views of the city, countryside and coast. Right at the V&A Waterfront, Zeitz MOCAA often has compelling special art exhibitions, not to mention extraordinary architecture. Shopping nearby at places like Aafricaa, the African Trading Port and the Watershed is touristy but great fun. And for something truly extraordinary, the Travel Office can arrange a day trip to Antarctica: a five-hour flight aboard an Airbus A340 to Wolf’s Fang Runway, followed by about three hours on the continent itself, with time for an easy hike and a Champagne picnic. I can’t think of a way to reach Antarctica that’s easier or more glamorous. AH

ADVISOR PROFILE
MARIANNE MCNULTY
Marianne recently returned from an incredibly memorable journey through southern Africa, where sweeping landscapes, vibrant cities and meaningful conservation experiences made for an enriching adventure. Authenticity is her top priority when she travels, and she brings that same commitment to every itinerary she creates. With a passion for research and a dedication to staying informed about the destinations she represents, Marianne ensures that every trip is thoughtfully tailored and truly unique.
Q+A WITH MARIANNE
How important is travel in your work?
Over the years of my career, I have traveled around the world more than once. I’ve been to destinations we can no longer visit and to countries and cities that were known by different names when I was there. My personal experiences feed the planning I do for the members. I am a dogged researcher, and being in a destination ignites the need to find out more about it. With a title like “advisor,” it is imperative that I have the knowledge members expect — or know where to find it.
What’s the most meaningful trip you’ve ever taken?
My recent trip to southern Africa. Wildlife in their natural habitat is the “greatest show on earth.” Every trip is meaningful if you go with an open mind and give
yourself up to the experiences offered, the people encountered, the cuisine consumed, the memories created. Remember to live in the moment and go with the flow.
How has travel shaped your worldview?
Travel is possibly the greatest learning experience. When I travel, I am steeped in the culture and people of another place and seek authentic experiences, which sometimes brings into focus the struggles of those people and the differences of our circumstances. I am a much more compassionate and forgiving individual for what I have seen others overcome.
What’s the most thrilling or adventurous thing you’ve done while traveling?
Boarding an old turbo prop airplane in Bali.
What always has a spot in your carry-on?
My sense of humor.
What’s your favorite kind of souvenir?
I have a gold bracelet with a gold charm from every country I have visited. I look at it often and reminisce — because it’s too heavy to wear! That, and the memories I have and the pictures taken — these feed the stories I have to tell and experiences to share with our members.
What are your tips for travel to South Africa?
Best time of year to visit: As a general rule, June through September is the best time because the grasses are lower, so more animals can be seen. Plus, the climate is cooler. I prefer the “shoulders” like May and October because you can avoid extreme temperatures but still experience great viewing. November to March brings the rains — and heat — and animals often hide in the lush, tall grasses.
When to start planning: Allow a bare minimum of six months lead time, as camps and lodges are small and demand is high.
Before you go: Handle your visa needs and purchase travel insurance. Visit your physician for advice on innoculations or medications — only he/she knows what might interact with prescriptions you already take. Order countryspecific currency from your bank for gratuities.
What to pack:
Adapter for plugs (make certain your devices are dual current or a converter will also be needed), chargers and cords, sunscreen, safari hat, medications and your passport! Don’t obsess about how little luggage you can bring — all the camps have laundry service, and no one at the next camp knows what you wore at the last! Most important, bring your sense of adventure.
One more tip: Never trust a baboon.

INTERVI E W: BILL BENSLEY
Bill Bensley, Andrew Harper member since 2014, with two of his five Jack Russell terriers
INSIDE THE WILD AND WHIMSICAL WORLD OF AN AWARD-WINNING HOTEL DESIGNER
Few designers have redefined the concept of experiential travel quite like Bill Bensley. Equal parts architect, storyteller and collector, Bensley has rewritten the rules of the hospitality industry. Born in California but based in Bangkok, he has put his stamp on more than 200 projects in 50 countries. Ranging from a tented camp in Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains to an art deco palace in Hanoi, they are infused with a sense of whimsy that delights travelers and connects them to the local culture. Here, the hotel designer shares his inspiration — and travel secrets — with Andrew Harper.
Diva’s Lounge, Capella Hanoi, Vietnam
AH: How would you describe your work?
BB: Storytelling through design. Each project is a narrative — rooted in its place, inspired by its people and respectful of its history. I believe that good design must serve a greater purpose, and mine has always been guided by a deep respect for nature, a celebration of culture and a touch of theatricality. My goal is to create experiences that are transportive, authentic and wildly unexpected. Above all, I design with intent — to surprise, delight and awaken a deeper connection between guests and the world around them. And, wherever possible, to use hospitality as a vehicle for conservation and community. That, to me, is what makes design meaningful.
AH: What was your first job, and how did the experience influence you?
BB: When I graduated from university in the United States, I felt a strong pull toward Southeast Asia. I made my way, in part by hitchhiking, and eventually landed in Singapore. Within two days,
I secured a position at an American architectural firm. While I gained a great deal of experience, it became increasingly clear to me that their priorities were largely driven by profit rather than by design integrity. That realization became a turning point in my life. I knew I needed to chart my own course — one that placed creativity, sustainability and storytelling at the very center of the design process.
AH: How do you want guests to feel when they walk into a hotel you’ve designed?
BB: I want them to feel curious. Surprised. Like they’ve just stepped into a place that doesn’t play by the usual rules. It’s not just about comfort or elegance — those are a given. What I’m after is a reaction. A raised eyebrow. A smile. A pause to take it all in. I want people to feel like they’re somewhere with personality, with soul. Somewhere that makes them forget where they came from and start wondering what’s around the next corner. Because travel should do more than relax you — it should wake you up.
BENSLEY
Dinner in the wild garlic fields of Mongolia
AH: The giant terrazzo baths at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui are a bath lover’s dream. What was the inspiration?
BB: A Thai chariot for the gods — that just so happens to hold water too, with a bit of theatrical excess. I wanted the bathrooms to be the centerpiece. After all, if you’re lucky enough to be perched on a jungle-cloaked hillside overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, you should be able to soak it all in — quite literally. So I designed those tubs to be outrageously oversized. I wanted guests to feel like emperors of their own private paradise — gin and tonic in hand, limbs afloat, gazing out to sea.
AH: What project are you most proud of?
BB: Shinta Mani Wild, my luxury tented camp in the last great wilderness of Southeast Asia, the Cardamom Mountains. There is nothing like waking up to the chorus of the jungle, and walking out to the deck to overlook it all, knowing you play a part in protecting it. Our handful of luxurious tents in the jungle fund the protection of the forest and animals by the Wildlife Alliance NGO. Guests learn all about wildlife protection, helping to remove snares and save animals. Then they can boulder-hop our river, kayak the coastal rivers or swim under a waterfall with breakfast waiting at the riverside. It is the culmination of my life’s work, taking everything I have learned about hotel design in 35 years to create a series of great experiences.
AH: You’ve said you travel often for work, but how often do you travel for fun?
BB: My long trips to Mongolia, where I go completely off-grid — no phone, no Wi-Fi, just rivers, tents and trout — those are what I’d call proper holidays. The rest? Well, when your work takes you to some of the world’s most beautiful corners, even business feels a bit like play.
AH: How much of your travel is spent sourcing the one-of-a-kind design elements?
BB: I’m a self-confessed shopaholic, guided by the philosophy of “Buy now, think later.” There is a distinct pleasure in exploring antique and flea markets in cities such as London, Paris and Bangkok, where one can uncover treasures ripe for repurposing in future projects. For example, the entire design concept of Hotel de la Coupole in Sapa, Vietnam, was inspired by a vintage red-and-white polka dot hat I discovered at a Paris flea market.

BB: When I was about 10, my family took off on a monthlong road trip in a little trailer my father built himself — with his own two hands. We left Southern California and made this great looping journey up through Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Idaho, before circling back down through Washington State, Oregon and, of course, Yosemite. It was the 1960s, so the national parks were still quiet, untouched — you could camp beneath the stars and not hear another soul for miles. That trip was, in many ways, my first real introduction to the majesty of wild places. I think that’s where the seed was planted — this lifelong love affair with nature, with travel, and creating spaces that honor the land rather than bulldoze it. And maybe that humble little trailer my dad built gave me my first lesson in design that’s both personal and purposeful.
AH: What’s the most thrilling adventure you’ve had while traveling?
BB: I’ve quite a few to choose from: swimming with pink porpoises and piranha in the Amazon, singing traditional songs with the yak herders of Shangri-la, stalking polar bears in Svalbard, drinking vodka in Moscow. Probably my best trip ever was an expedition of Burma by hot air balloon (the first time it had ever been done by anyone). We sailed across the gorgeous countryside into areas that rarely see Westerners, let alone a 60-meter-high balloon towing a tiny basket filled with them.
AH: What’s your best piece of travel advice?
BB: Take a sketch book and draw something — when you draw, it becomes part of you.
AH: What does a perfect day on vacation look like to you?
BB: Stringing together a number of interesting places we have never been, like the “Stans” by way of train. This year, we will visit the ancient cities and missions of Belize, Chiapas and Guatemala. Having now visited 105 countries, research is critical and enjoyable to finding next year’s adventure. And by the way — I have for many years used Andrew Harper as a great resource, so thank you for that!
AH: We love to hear that! Which hotels have been your favorite?
BB: Awasi in the Atacama Desert, Huka Lodge in New Zealand, Hoshinoya in Kyoto, the Ballyfin in Ireland and Jack’s Camp in Botswana. These are hands-down heart-stopping.
From top: Guest room, Capella Ubud, Bali, and courtyard at The Siam, Bangkok
I wanted guests to feel like emperors of their own private paradise — gin and tonic in hand, limbs afloat, gazing out to sea. — BILL BENSLEY
AH: What’s the most underrated city you’ve been to?
BB: Definitely Tbilisi, Georgia. The city has a unique charm, full of art, fantastic architecture, great food and scenic countryside. Tbilisi surprised me in the best way possible.
AH: What’s at the top of your bucket list?
BB: Madagascar.
AH: What would be your dream project (without having to worry about budget or logistics)?
BB: I’d love to do a hotel made completely out of recycled materials and just need a client with the shared vision and a budget.
AH: We love that idea. If you could pick any location to set the next hotel you design, where would it be?
BB: Central Asia — places like Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, where the cultural richness of the Silk Road meets landscapes that are still wonderfully untouched by mass tourism. There’s such a wealth of story and soul there, and I think it offers an exciting canvas for hospitality that’s both deeply rooted and wildly imaginative. Africa also holds great potential, particularly Gabon or Angola — places where conservation is in its infancy and design can play a meaningful role in protecting biodiversity while uplifting local communities. Stay tuned! AH

CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
AN ICONIC ROAD TRIP FROM SONOMA TO BIG SUR
Incorporating sensational coastal and wine-country scenery, this itinerary takes you on one of our favorite road trips in the United States. Start your journey in the art-filled city of San Francisco before making the drive up the coast. After a relaxing stay at the Inn at Newport Ranch, you’ll make your way through Napa and Sonoma wine country. The area has long captivated oenophiles and gourmets with its delightful towns, stylish boutiques and magnificent vineyards. Enjoy fine dining and exclusive wine tastings before heading south to Big Sur, where you’ll check into Post Ranch Inn, consistently ranked as one of our members’ favorite hotels anywhere in the world.
Read Andrew Harper Travel Advisor Jennifer Hale’s tips on travels to California on page 48.
SAN FRANCISCO
STAY Arrive in San Francisco and check into The Battery, a discreet 14-suite hotel set within a members-only social club in the Financial District. Sophisticated accommodations, beautifully decorated by designer Ken Fulk, come with original art, leather headboards and spacious baths with egg-shaped soaking tubs and walk-in showers. Another option is the 260-room St. Regis, a striking hotel that combines a 40-story tower with the historic Williams Building, next to the city’s Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of the African Diaspora. Suites feature impressive views of the San Francisco cityscape or the lush Yerba Buena Gardens.
DINE San Francisco is famously an engine of culinary innovation. Superb local, seasonal ingredients are a constant source of inspiration for the gastronomically adventurous chefs
who call the city home. Reopened in 2023 after an extensive renovation, Quince is a Michelin threestar restaurant situated in Jackson Square. Chef Michael Tusk creates a nightly changing 10-course tasting menu highlighting seasonal cuisine, with many ingredients sourced from an organic farm in Bolinas (the bar offers a shorter tasting menu and à la carte options).
EXPLORE The must-see San Francisco Museum of Modern Art includes 45,000 square feet of art-filled free public space. The museum houses a vast collection of creative, contemporary works in all mediums, and also hosts guided tours and special screenings. Located downtown, the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco presents the work of emerging artists from around the world. Continually changing exhibits emphasize local and civic engagement.

MENDOCINO
STAY Set on more than 2,200 private acres of stunning coastal land, the Inn at Newport Ranch reflects the heritage of the area’s redwood lumber history, with massive planks used in the flooring of the impressive living-dining room. Adding to the atmosphere are high beamed ceilings, a 20-foot stone walk-in fireplace and a row of windows that look out to the Pacific.
DINE The inn’s restaurant, set within the main lodge, sets the stage for rustic, ranch-inspired meals with a fine-dining twist. At dinner, the tasting menu changes nightly. Dishes such as lingcod with Fort Bragg uni and Maltaise sauce showcase the area’s natural bounty; many of the ingredients are sourced from the inn’s own garden.
EXPLORE Your hotel can arrange horseback riding and UTV safaris along the coast and back into the redwood forest and hills overlooking the sea. Take time to explore the small towns scattered along the Pacific. Most notable is charming Mendocino, perched on bluffs overlooking the ocean. Here, you’ll find engaging galleries and appealing restaurants and cafés. Mendocino is also known for its wines, most notably those of nearby Anderson Valley, an area reminiscent of Napa Valley 30 years ago — simple, accessible and low-key. With all the wineries lined up on Highway 128, visits are easy. And as many are small operations, you often have the chance to meet the owners.

3 NIGHTS
SONOMA
STAY The delightful town of Healdsburg, the epicenter of Sonoma County’s food and wine culture, is your next stop. The Montage, a contemporary resort only a 10-minute drive northeast of town, feels like a retreat deep in the countryside, spread amid 258 acres of vineyards and oak forest. In the heart of Healdsburg, stylish SingleThread encompasses just five accommodations, plus an exquisite Michelin three-star restaurant. Farther south, in the Russian River Valley, Farmhouse Inn is a sophisticated family-owned country-style hotel with 25 lodgings, some with private decks overlooking a wooded area.
DINE SingleThread’s restaurant is a fusion of Japanese and Western culinary and aesthetic traditions. The compelling multicourse tasting menu, which can be customized to suit pescatarians and vegetarians, features dishes such as yellowtail with barrel-aged ponzu, Cara Cara orange,
komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach) and Saikyo miso, or black cod cooked in a fukkura-san (a tagine-style clay pot) with leeks, brassicas, sansho (a type of Japanese pepper) and chamomile dashi. For a more casual option in town, Willi’s Seafood & Raw Bar serves first-rate seafood dishes on its inviting patio in front, along the bar or in one of its dining rooms. Look for the appetizer of tuna tartare enlivened by spicy jalapeño, warm ginger and sweet, thick coconut milk.
EXPLORE The Travel Office can arrange a series of sommelier-led wine tours and private tastings at favorite wineries along the Russian River Valley and the Dry Creek Valley. For a break from the tasting rooms, head to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, where a series of trails leads into a world of stately coast redwoods. The giant here is the Parson Jones, soaring more than 310 feet.

NAPA VALLEY
STAY Continue to Napa Valley for a stay at one of the area’s many luxury resorts. On the border of Napa and Sonoma counties, Carneros is a bucolic resort set amid a landscape of yellow and purple wildflowers, towering palm trees and green pastures. The 86 cottages are clustered into micro-neighborhoods that are connected via a series of lush garden paths. The Four Seasons Resort & Residences Napa Valley is a sophisticated hotel situated at the top of the vineyard-lined Silverado Trail in Calistoga. Despite the size of the 22.5-acre estate, the property has a surprisingly intimate feel, with just 85 guest rooms and 20 privately owned residences. Originally established in the early 1960s as a country club for vintners, Meadowood is a distinctive resort set in the heart of the Napa Valley. Tranquil lodgings showcase high beamed ceilings, elegant furnishings in shades of cream and light gray, and expansive baths featuring massive tubs and glass-walled showers. At Auberge du Soleil, a cosmopolitan resort terraced into a hillside amid 33 acres of olive and oak trees, the 50 villa-style lodgings have gas fireplaces, picturesque verandas and oversize baths with sky-lit soaking tubs.
DINE In Yountville, the French Laundry is a Michelin three-star restaurant tucked into a charming late-19th-century building. Here, chef Thomas Keller orchestrates a magnificent tasting menu that changes daily and focuses on small, carefully considered dishes meant to intrigue and inspire. The wine list is astonishing, and the staff are expert at recommending pairings.
EXPLORE The Travel Office can arrange private winery tours of some of the country’s top producers. Two examples: Ovid, one of the area’s superstar wineries, has a stunning hilltop location, while Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery is set within a beautiful 1880s Victorian mansion. Beyond the wineries, Napa Valley is an excellent place for outdoor adventures, including whitewater rafting, bike tours, fly-fishing, hiking, kayaking and canoeing, golfing, horseback riding and hot air balloon rides. Renowned for its geyser and natural mineral hot springs, Calistoga is a delightful town that has maintained its authenticity and low-key charm over the years. For an offbeat spa treatment, visit the famous mud baths.

Scenes from Big Sur
BIG SUR
STAY From Napa, drive south to Monterey County for a few days of sublime relaxation at one of the country’s best resorts. Set along a bluff directly above the Pacific in Big Sur, Post Ranch Inn is a unique coastal resort. Spacious interiors of the 40 contemporary guest lodgings feature natural wood and stone trims, woodburning fireplaces and spa tubs but no TVs.
DINE Post Ranch Inn’s Sierra Mar restaurant serves a prix fixe menu backed by a predictably impressive wine list. Nearby, enjoy a casual lunch with impressive views at Nepenthe, a funky roadside
restaurant that’s been open since 1949. (Don’t miss the excellent gift shop.)
EXPLORE Amenities at the resort include two clifftop basking pools, a lap pool, a spa and a gym. Complimentary yoga classes, garden tours, art walks and guided nature walks are offered. Big Sur’s population is sparse, and the area still retains the rugged qualities that long ago lent it a bohemian allure. A host of state parks in the area offers ample opportunity for exploring on foot, by bike or on horseback. AH

ADVISOR PROFILE
JENNIFER HALE
Jennifer began her career in travel working for a San Franciscobased boutique agency specializing in travel to Japan. This role morphed into designing and directing her own group tours to Japan, where she lived, studied and worked for many years. Outside of work, Jennifer loves music, dance and spending time with her husband, two boys, and their King Charles spaniel, Henry. She’s excited to return to the travel industry and to be a part of Andrew Harper!
Q+A WITH JENNIFER
Where are you based?
Marin County, California.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
Handling travel operations for world-renowned sake expert John Gauntner. He conducts his Sake Professionals Course in Japan and trains folks to get their sake certifications, similar to becoming a wine sommelier.
How has travel shaped your worldview?
I developed a love for British pubs in Japan, of all places. Meeting expats from all over the world has a profound effect on one’s perspective.
What’s your best piece of travel advice?
Bring your patience, an open mind and keep it simple!
What always has a spot in your carry-on?
A swimming suit, no matter what.
What’s your favorite kind of souvenir?
The edible kind! Flavor profiles and the packaging it comes in say so much about a place.
What gets you most excited about planning a trip to Central California?
Introducing clients to the natural beauty and world-class wines that Napa and Sonoma have to offer.
What are your tips for travel to Central California?
Best time of year to visit: My favorite time to visit is late September to early October for the fall colors. There is a “rainy season” that typically lasts from November through mid-March.
When to start planning:
At least six months in advance for top winery appointments and sought-after hotel reservations.
Before you go:
Check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.
What to pack:
Layers, hats, comfortable shoes and sunglasses — temperatures can vary dramatically, going from very warm sunlit vineyard tours to chilly wine cellars. I always have a pashmina for evenings.
What to bring home: Wine!

VIA THE ITALIAN LAKES
The ethereal scenery and calm indigo water of Italy’s Alpine lakes — Maggiore, Como and Garda — have had an irresistible appeal since Roman times, when aristocrats began summering on their shores. Eighteen hundred years later, the British Romantic poets, chiefly Byron and Shelley, put the lakes on the map as a mandatory part of the Grand Tour. Each generation falls in love with them all over again: Ernest Hemingway was besotted with Lake Maggiore; today, many celebrities have villas on Lake Como, keeping the region’s glamour current. The lakes provide a perfect timeout during a tour of Italy, but they should also be considered destinations in their own right. With a private driver, this trip will take you from Milan to the lakes, where you’ll spend your time wine tasting and sightseeing. Finally, your trip will end in Venice, a fairytale city that’s home to some of Italy’s most fabulous palazzo hotels.

MILAN
STAY Arrive in Milan and check into either the Four Seasons, near La Scala opera house, or Bulgari Hotel, in a secluded and verdant setting in the heart of the city. The gracious Four Seasons sits within a restored 15th-century convent in the fashion district, 118 individually decorated guest rooms and suites featuring original architectural details such as frescoes, columns, vaulted ceilings and marble fireplaces. At the 58-room Bulgari, rooms feature leather-covered writing desks, silk-shaded lamps and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light.
DINE Opt for a quiet dinner at your hotel on your first evening. Occupying a wide conservatory area overlooking the courtyard garden at the Four Seasons, Zelo presents Italian cuisine focused on both traditional and innovative options as well as extensive vegetarian choices. Stilla bar-lounge serves lighter fare and cocktails in an elegant dining room or on a leafy garden terrace. At Bulgari’s Il Ristorante, chef Niko Romito presents contemporary Italian fare in a refined dining room. Elsewhere in the city, dine on comfort food such as a first-rate osso buco set atop risotto alla Milanese at Antica Trattoria della Pesa, a friendly family-owned restaurant with a handsome Belle Epoque interior, or head to Bebel, an insider’s address popular with designers, journalists and photographers.
EXPLORE Spend the day of your arrival in your hotel’s spa, recovering from the jet lag with a massage. The Travel Office can arrange a private city tour, including a visit to the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie to take in Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” and a stop at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana to see “Portrait of a Musician,” which many scholars believe to be a da Vinci and some consider a selfportrait. Fashion-obsessed travelers won’t want to miss a visit to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a beautiful shopping arcade filled with luxury brands. While there, stop for a sweet treat at the historic Pasticceria Marchesi with splendid views of the historic arcade from its arched windows.

LAKE ORTA
STAY Your driver will take you about an hour northwest of Milan to the Villa Crespi, close to diminutive Lake Orta, within walking distance of the pretty town of Orta San Giulio. Check into your room in this neo-Moorish pleasure palace and stroll into town and have a snack on its lakefront piazza.
DINE The Villa Crespi has a superb Michelin three-star restaurant helmed by chef Antonino Cannavacciuolo. Or, dine in town instead, perhaps on the roof terrace of AM Bistrot, offering views of Lake Orta and Isola San Giulio beyond the slate roofs of the town. The unfussy but delicious food is well matched with a glass of citrusy Falanghina.
EXPLORE The Travel Office can organize a boat trip to Isola San Giulio in Lake Orta, but the harmonious architectural ensemble is perhaps best appreciated from afar. The most spectacular panoramas can be had from the edge of the Sacro Monte di Orta, a leafy hilltop above town.
DETOUR Consider a side trip to Stresa on Lake Maggiore to make an excursion to the Borromean Islands. Start with a visit to the palace and gardens of Isola Madre and finish with a tour of the imposing palace and formal gardens of Isola Bella. While in Stresa, stop for a drink at the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées, a property that was once a favorite of Ernest Hemingway and features in “A Farewell to Arms.”

TIP
3 NIGHTS
LAKE COMO
STAY In the morning, you’ll transfer to Lake Como in time for a leisurely lunch. Check into one of our three favorite hotels in the area: Passalacqua, a sumptuous contemporary resort in a converted 18th-century villa; the vibrant Grand Hotel Tremezzo, built on a steep lakeside plot with sublime views of the lake; or the Villa d’Este, a mansion set amid 25 acres of gorgeous gardens at the edge of Lake Como.
DINE Each of the hotels offers fine dining with lake views. For a delightful meal beyond the resorts, consider one of our favorite local restaurants, like the idyllic Crotto dei Platani in Brienno. An outdoor setting and contemporary Italian cooking make this waterside establishment on Lake Como an ideal choice on a warm summer evening.
EXPLORE Lake Como offers myriad diversions. A half or full day cruising with a private vintage motor launch is an unforgettable experience. The Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo is especially notable for its over 17 acres of grounds that contain dazzling displays of flowers. The beautiful Villa del Balbianello near Lenno dates from 1787 and is surrounded by gardens lush with wisteria, laurel and rhododendron. The ungroomed Isola Comacina, dotted with the ruins of a church and other buildings, is also fascinating. The town of Bellagio is justly popular. And be sure to leave ample time to simply enjoy your hotel, relaxing beside the pool and indulging in a treatment or two in the spa. Water skiing, sailing and windsurfing on the lake can readily be arranged.

Visit Monte Generoso for a gorgeous panorama of the entire region from its 5,581-foot summit on the Swiss border.

LAKE ISEO
STAY From Como, continue to Franciacorta, which makes traditional-method sparkling wines that rival Champagne. Our longtime recommendation here is L’Albereta, a hilltop estate surrounded by gardens and vineyards a short drive from Lake Iseo.
DINE In Erbusco, Cadebasi is a stylish local spot where diners are encouraged to make up their own tasting menus from tempting small plates such as mackerel marinated in beet juice and tender veal sweetbreads with fennel cream.
EXPLORE Take two more days to enjoy L’Albereta and Franciacorta. Visit a winery or two: Ca’ del Bosco offers a fascinating and art-filled tour, and your hotel has its own top-notch winery, Bellavista. Also allow time to tour Lake Iseo. Book a private boat or take the public ferry to one of Europe’s largest lake islands, the car-free Monte Isola, where pretty villages fringe a mountainous center. Lake Iseo may be small, but it is extremely scenic. L’Albereta also has a destination spa with an extensive array of wellness treatments.
EN ROUTE On the way to your next hotel on Lake Garda, visit the untouristy city of Brescia, with its lovely main square and impressive Santa Giulia Museum complex (don’t miss the Greco-Roman bronze “Winged Victory” statue).
Loreto Island, Lake Iseo
L’Albereta
LAKE GARDA
STAY A driver will take you from Lake Iseo to Lake Garda. Check into either the Grand Hotel Fasano in Gardone Riviera or the Grand Hotel a Villa Feltrinelli, a bit farther north in Gargnano. Both have sensational lake views and excellent restaurants. The Grand Hotel Fasano is within walking distance of town and closer to most attractions, whereas the Villa Feltrinelli is more remote. It’s also more opulent, exclusive and expensive.
DINE In Gargnano, La Tortuga is a delightful family-owned restaurant overlooking the main square. The seasonal menu specializes in seafood from nearby Lake Garda and also serves excellent homemade pastas.
EXPLORE Spend two full days exploring Lake Garda and its surroundings. Either resort can arrange for private boats for tours, including a circumnavigation of Isola del Garda, crowned by
a Venetian Gothic-style villa. We also recommend a visit to the André Heller Botanical Garden in Gardone Riviera, which are studded with contemporary sculptures.

VENICE
STAY Venice has no shortage of extraordinary hotels. Aman and Palazzo Venart both offer sumptuous suites in an intimate, off-the-beatenpath setting. Closer to St. Mark’s Basilica, Gritti Palace is a longtime favorite, and the glamorous Nolinski is a cozy, art-filled hideaway. Cipriani, on Giudecca, feels like a private-island oasis.
DINE Consider an excursion to the lagoon island of Mazzorbo, where the multicourse tasting menu at Michelin-starred Venissa features delicious and creative dishes made from invasive species, such as a “rice” made from shredded sea snail or cold spaghetti topped with blue crab. A bar and casual
osteria welcome walk-in guests, and a footbridge connects to the nearby island of Burano. Closer to the center, one of our latest finds is Riviera Ristorante, with tables along the Giudecca Canal in Dorsoduro.
EXPLORE Venice may be overcrowded and overpriced, but it remains miraculously beautiful. The city’s treasures are inexhaustible, from stunning churches to cozy wine bars. Discover the city’s contemporary art scene at the Pinault Collection. Visit

ADRIANNE MARTINEZ
Adrianne is based in Los Angeles, where she was born and raised. Her time living in Europe, specifically Spain, ignited a deep passion for travel and cultural immersion. Adrianne began her journey by independently planning trips, which evolved into a career as an independent contractor specializing in luxury travel. She is thrilled to join the Andrew Harper team and looks forward to collaborating with everyone.
Q+A WITH ADRIANNE
What’s been your career highlight so far?
One of the most rewarding experiences was planning a surprise proposal at Villa Balbiano on Lake Como. The boyfriend wanted it to be perfect and personally found me to plan a stunning setting, thoughtful details and, most importantly, a surprise appearance from the girlfriend’s family after she said yes. Coordinating this took detailed planning — but helping create the start of their forever made every second worth it.
What’s the most meaningful trip you’ve ever taken?
When I was 18, I traveled with a friend to Europe to visit a Danish exchange student. The three of us spent a month exploring the continent — just a group of teenagers, completely lost and on our own. We visited eight
countries and countless cities, navigating unfamiliar places, cultures and languages. That trip sparked my endless pursuit to travel the world!
What’s at the top of your bucket list?
Greece! One of the biggest European adventures to escape me so far.
How has travel shaped your worldview?
There’s a depth of understanding that comes from immersing yourself in different cultures, something no book or screen can fully replicate. Travel offers a kind of knowledge that’s felt, not just learned. It challenges assumptions, sparks empathy and builds a mental and emotional connection to humanity that only real-world experience can provide.
What’s the most thrilling or adventurous thing you’ve done while traveling?
A few years ago, I packed up my entire life and moved to a city I had never visited, in a country I’d only seen for a single day. I barely knew the language, but I took the leap and moved to Valencia, Spain, to teach English to children in a local school. It was the best decision I’ve ever made!
What’s your favorite kind of souvenir?
I collect postcards from every place I’ve been to; I hope to make it into a very, very long scrapbook.
What are your tips for travel to Northern Italy?
Best time of year to visit: Late May or early September.
When to start planning: Allow six months and plan your itinerary around the specific lakes and towns you want to visit.
Before you go:
Book accommodations and ferries early, especially if traveling May-September; check the weather forecast for your travel dates — the lakes
have microclimates that can vary; learn a few basic Italian phrases — locals appreciate the effort; purchase travel insurance that covers the trip and health emergencies; and download offline maps and transport schedules, since cell coverage can be spotty in some areas.
What to pack:
Comfortable walking shoes — cobblestones and hills are everywhere. Light layers — mornings and evenings can be cool, even in summer. Swimwear and a towel — for lakeside swims
or hotel pools. Sun protection — sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Smart casual outfits — many restaurants and villas have dress codes. Reusable water bottle — tap water is safe and fresh. A power adapter for European plugs. A camera or smartphone with plenty of memory.
What to bring home:
Local olive oil and balsamic vinegar; limoncello or local wines; handmade ceramics or Murano glass; silk scarfs and ties; artisanal pasta, truffle products and specialty cheeses.

Each space has maintained its unique character while offering stunning views of the surrounding landmarks. For the Nolinski Venezia in Venice, the duo collaborated with a French and Italian interior design team to tackle the challenges of a historic Venetian building. Beach at Como Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos
TURKS AND CAICOS
STAY Renowned for their gleaming beaches and vast coral reefs, the Turks and Caicos are just a two-hour flight from Miami, making it an easy destination for short trips or the starting point of a longer Caribbean exploration. Check into either Sailrock South Caicos resort, featuring panoramic views from its 38 villas and suites, or Como Parrot Cay, a low-key celebrity hangout with 72 accommodations and a spa offering ayurvedic treatments.
DINE At Sailrock, guests take breakfast and dinner on a terrace at the Great House, while lunch is served at the Cove, a beachfront restaurant a three-minute drive away by shuttle. Its menu offers Caribbean specialties, plus ceviche, salads and burgers. Como Parrot Cay has two restaurants. In the main hotel, Terrace specializes in Italian-inspired spa cuisine, while Lotus, overlooking the beach, serves Caribbean and Asian dishes.
EXPLORE The Turks and Caicos provide an ideal setting for both honeymoons and family trips. The islands have hundreds of superb white-sand beaches and hundreds of miles of barrier reefs and underwater canyons that make for some of the world’s best snorkeling and diving. Mudjin Harbor, a
3-mile-long stretch of sand blessed with turquoise waters and minimal crowds, is one of our favorite beaches. Though the ocean can sometimes be too rough for snorkeling and swimming, there are excellent hiking trails and two large sea caves that can be accessed from the beach.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
STAY Surrounded by coral reefs and limpid turquoise water, the British Virgin Islands form an astonishingly beautiful tropical archipelago. Set on 500 acres of emerald rainforest and a pristine white-sand crescent on Virgin Gorda, the 81-accommodation Rosewood Little Dix Bay has an upscale beach-house vibe that features British campaign-style furniture, driftwood accents and natural stone. Each Pool Suite is set slightly back from the beach and features a plunge pool, an outdoor rainfall shower framed by curved rock walls and stunning views over the bay’s crystal waters.
DINE Resort restaurants include Pavilion for West Indies-inspired dishes and the more casual Reef House, which has a superb catch of the day. The hotel also hosts dining experiences that rotate weekly. For example, a toes-in-the-sand seafood barbecue dinner includes a feast of grilled Anegada lobster tails and jumbo shrimp.
EXPLORE Time here is best spent relaxing in the sun and at the cliffside spa, but guests in a more active mood can try out the new tennis and pickleball courts, take a farm tour, practice yoga overlooking the Sir Francis Drake Channel or head out on a snorkeling excursion to spot sea turtles. ANGUILLA
STAY This British Overseas Territory remains a low-key place, with narrow roads and few large buildings. The landscape is flat and scrubby, but the sea is a luminous turquoise, and the white-sand beaches are among the best in the Caribbean. Belmond’s Cap Juluca is set on its own 179-acre peninsula, fronting one of the finest beaches in the Caribbean. Whitewashed archways, domes and mock parapets create the look of a Moorish oasis. The 68 spacious rooms and 45 suites, housed in oceanfront villas, feature butler service and louvered doors that open onto covered oceanfront terraces. The dramatic clifftop Malliouhana overlooks three beaches: Turtle Cove, Bobbing Cove and milelong Meads Bay. A bright color scheme of mint, mango, saffron and white enlivens the 62 lodgings, which include beachfront suites, garden suites and the expansive two-bedroom Turtle Cove Suite. Four multibedroom villas nearby come with butler service, a dedicated concierge staff and an optional private chef.
DINE Cap Juluca has two main restaurants, one serving Italian cuisine and the other elevated Caribbean fare. Additional dining options include the cocktail lounge and the pool café, which offers Peruvian-inspired dishes. At Malliouhana, dining options include a nautically themed, pavilion-like restaurant serving Mediterranean-influenced Caribbean cuisine; the clubby Bar Soleil with a
light tapas menu; and a seaside eatery on Meads Bay for Southeast Asian-Caribbean fare. For a quintessential local beach bar, Blanchards Restaurant & Beach Shack, on Meads Bay Beach, is ideal for an informal lunch.
EXPLORE Relax at Cap Juluca’s glamorous Guerlain spa or the beachfront infinity pool. There’s also a tennis center and a launch for snorkeling excursions, and transportation to a nearby Greg Norman-designed golf course can be arranged. Malliouhana offers a wide array of family-friendly activities, including sea cruises, fishing excursions, horseback riding and tennis clinics. Anguilla has superlative beaches. Meads Bay, on the West End, boasts a mile of sugary sand. On the south coast, Cove Bay offers stunning vistas across to the peaks of St. Martin.

ADVISOR TIP
ANTIGUA
STAY Antigua is blessed with an abundance of fine white-sand beaches. The English Harbour, in the south part of the island, is extremely pretty, as is the site of Nelson’s Dockyard, a restored colonial naval station that contains an array of 18th-century neoclassical buildings and remains a popular destination for sailors. Located on a 300-acre private residential island, tranquil Jumby Bay, reachable only by boat, is a 10-minute transfer by private yacht from the mainland. The property has 40 suites and 14 multibedroom villas, with features such as separate living rooms and wraparound ocean-view terraces. The one- and two-bedroom Ocean View Suites with private pools are especially glamorous.
DINE Dining options at the resort include the Estate House for seafood-oriented island cooking, the Beach Shack for Latin American-Caribbean fusion cuisine and a casual waterfront brasserie serving Mediterranean-inspired fare. The public beach on Antigua’s south coast, Pigeon Point, is popular with families and locals and is the island’s best beach for people-watching. It’s also home to Catherine’s Café, one of the best restaurants on the island.
EXPLORE The resort encompasses an infinity pool, a yoga pavilion, a lap pool, a gym, a kids’ club, tennis courts, a sailing academy and an open-air spa. Activities include water skiing, yacht charters, cooking demonstrations, rum tastings, sunset cocktail cruises and guided snorkeling and kayaking tours. For picturesque sunset views, stop at Shirley Heights on Sundays, when visitors can enjoy a barbecue accompanied by rum punch and a steel band. Or experience the island’s vibrant music and dance scene during the Antigua Carnival summer festival.

DOMINICA
STAY Green, mountainous and unspoiled, Dominica is an intriguing alternative to the more developed Caribbean islands. Nature reserves take up almost one-third of the island. Instead of sandy beaches, it features impressive peaks, spectacular waterfalls and dense tropical rainforests. Set on a dramatic promontory on Dominica’s northwest coast, the stylish Secret Bay is an eco-resort that encompasses 22 superbly crafted villas made entirely of sustainably sourced Guyanese hardwood. Perched 110 feet above the sea, the clifftop Zabuco Honeymoon Villas are the most desirable. Open and pavilion-like with floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room, each of these accommodations includes a kitchen and a sea-facing deck with a private pool.
DINE A funicular conveniently connects the property’s lodgings and common areas, including Botanica, a chef’s tasting table set within the property’s organic garden, and Bwa Denn, a treehouse-like space that’s home to a casual all-day eatery, a microbrewery, a full-service bar and a fine-dining restaurant with locally inspired tasting menus.
EXPLORE Instead of sandy beaches, the island features impressive peaks, some nearly 4,750 feet high; spectacular waterfalls; and dense tropical rainforests with more than 1,000 species of plants and 172 species of birds. With three national parks, 300 miles of hiking trails and world-class diving, the island offers innumerable activities and excursions. At Secret Bay, the hotel’s water-sports hut offers kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling equipment.

ST. LUCIA
STAY A jewel of the Caribbean, St. Lucia stands out for its sensational scenery: pristine beaches, emerald rainforests and, most dramatically, the Pitons, two iconic volcanic spires rising above the southwest coast. Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, is a converted 18th-century sugar plantation situated on a magnificent secluded bay framed by the towering Pitons. The 130 accommodations, ranging from multibedroom hillside villas to beachside bungalows, feature elegant white-on-white interiors with vaulted ceilings, dark hardwood floors and four-poster beds draped with gauzy voile. Jade Mountain, a leading hideaway for honeymooners and the Caribbean’s top sustainable-tourism hotel, is a striking eco-resort seamlessly integrated into the surrounding jungle landscape. The majority of the 29 guest rooms feature a three-wall design that merges indoor and outdoor spaces and offers stupefying views of the iconic Pitons and the Caribbean Sea.
DINE Meals at Sugar Beach are exceptional. Saltwood serves gourmet dishes including lobster thermidor and wagyu tenderloin at dinner, while more casual Bonté hosts a family-friendly party
atmosphere with live music by the beach. Jade Mountain’s on-site private restaurant offers fine fusion cuisine and jaw-dropping vistas. Guests also have access to the sister property, Anse Chastanet, which has three dining options, including the Treehouse Restaurant for excellent local dishes.
EXPLORE Though the shores near Sugar Beach are usually composed of black volcanic rock, the hotel imported 7,500 tons of white sand from Guyana. Thatched-roof pods provide a perfect place for lounging or as a base for snorkeling the crystal-clear waters. At the resort’s Cocoa Mill, on-staff chocolatiers host immersive chocolatemaking classes. At Jade Mountain, guests can tour Emerald Estate, the hotel’s working farm, or sign up for chocolate tastings and cooking classes. Staff at both properties can plan well-organized guided excursions to the mud baths at Sulphur Springs and the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano. AH

Q+A WITH MELANIE
What’s your earliest travel memory?
I traveled to Germany when I was 16 with my grandparents right before Christmas. Seeing the European Christmas markets and traditions is something I will never forget.
What does a perfect day on vacation look like to you?
Being from the Midwest, I enjoy traveling to warm beach destinations to get away from the cold, so I will take a beach, pool, the ocean and sun any day.
What’s at the top of your bucket list?
I’d love to visit more Caribbean Islands, and Alaska is also on my bucket list.
How has travel shaped your worldview?
When I travel, I like to immerse
myself in the culture and see the world from a different perspective. I always love traveling and seeing new places, trying new things, but it has also taught me how much I love being home and how blessed I am to live where I live.
What gets you most excited about visiting/planning a trip to the Caribbean?
I love the authentic Caribbean culture with its laid-back, barefoot atmosphere. The people are always friendly, the seafood is amazing, and the views are incredible.
What are your tips for travel to the Caribbean?
General: I highly recommend planning at least one day to get out on the water, either to relax, snorkel or go island-hopping (a must in the Virgin Islands). For any water excursion, we can arrange a private yacht.
Best time of year to visit: December through April is the dry season, although I’ve visited in May and it is still beautiful.
What to pack:
Plenty of bathing suits, as you will spend most of your time either on the water or at the beach. Don’t forget your insulated drink mugs to keep your beverages cold throughout the day, and your waterproof bags to protect your phone and wallet in case you get wet.
