WELCOME TO THE KENTUCKY CENTER!

Thanks for joining us at this performance. Water For Elephants, the acclaimed novel that was made into a movie in 2011, was on Broadway this past season. It received seven Tony Award nominations, and we’re super pleased to have the show in Whitney Hall following its recent Broadway run. In December, we’ll welcome the 2023 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Kimberly Akimbo. It was nominated for nine Tony’s and won five, including Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical and, of course, Best Musical. Kimberly Akimbo tells the story of a teenager facing and meeting the challenges of a rare genetic condition that causes her to age four times faster. This poignant musical has lots of heart and lots of humor, and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we did during its Broadway run.

Thank you to those of you who contributed to the Louisville Theatrical Association’s education program when you subscribed. This season, we’ll host schools from across the state. Students from Williamsburg High School and Bell County High will attend The Great Gatsby. Boyle County High School and Louisville’s Bloom Elementary will experience the 30th Anniversary tour of Riverdance. Meade County Schools are joining us this week for Water for Elephants. The Home of the Innocents residents will attend Kimberly Akimbo and Hamilton. Greathouse/Shyrock Traditional students will attend Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. We’re still filling applications and will have more to report to you in the coming weeks. In many instances, these students will be experiencing professional theatre for the very first time. Arts make a difference in the lives of our children. Thank you for making these experiences possible. This is such an important program, and we couldn’t do it without you.

The other side of our education mission is supporting those that have lots of exposure to and participate in the arts. It’s important to nurture their talents and help them to succeed. Toward that end, you’ll recall that we partnered with The Kentucky Center to bring the National High School Musical Theatre awards (KPA Bradley Awards) to Kentuckiana for the first time ever. It was a roaring success, and two Kentuckians went to Broadway for the first time to compete in the Jimmy Awards. The application deadline for the second annual 2026 KPA Bradley Awards was September 15th. We’ll keep you posted on the schools that are chosen to compete, and I hope you will consider attending the awards ceremony next June here in Whitney Hall.

We applaud our longtime partner, PNC Bank, for their support over many decades. And we salute you for being in the theatre today and supporting your Broadway series.

Enjoy the show!
