Babson College 2024-2025 Community Impact Report

Page 1

WE ARE BABSON. WE BELIEVE:

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS CORE TO HUMANITY.

We each carry within us vast potential to create new solutions, act on our values, and impact the world in positive and powerful ways.

BABSON CAN UNLEASH AND AMPLIFY THIS POTENTIAL TO HAVE IMPACT.

With a developed entrepreneurial mindset, training, and inspiration, people everywhere can create lasting value for ourselves, our communities, and the world.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS THE MOST POWERFUL DRIVER OF POSITIVE CHANGE.

Entrepreneurship is the most powerful tool there is to confront and overcome today’s challenges and create new opportunities.

HOW WE LEARN, TEACH, AND OPERATE MUST EVOLVE.

We each must continually reinvent ourselves by acquiring new skills and knowledge. Colleges and universities also must reinvent themselves, engaging learners more deeply, co-creating relevant, experiential learning and real problem-solving opportunities.

WE CAN HAVE IMPACT EVERYWHERE.

We can educate and act across geography, across politics, across demographics, and across the lifespan.

THERE IS NO CHOICE BETWEEN SOCIETAL AND ECONOMIC VALUE.

We must have both. Each creates and strengthens the other. Finding, developing, and scaling opportunities that do both, simultaneously, is the ultimate challenge of our time.

WE MUST BREAK BARRIERS TO ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY.

We can create value for everyone, everywhere. There can be no edge. Everyone should have access to opportunities, and to the tools for learning and untethered self-determination.

WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.

We can achieve more when we move powerfully together, respecting and trusting each other, developing and strengthening networks, and connecting with diverse, multiple, even unlikely partners in order to accomplish shared goals.

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The 2024-2025 academic year at Babson College was a momentous one.

Babson ascended once again to the stellar position of The Wall Street Journal’s No. 2 best college in the United States—on the heels of last year’s historic No. 10 ranking.

Babson has long asserted our place as the global leader for entrepreneurship education as evidenced by our decades-long recognition as the No. 1 school for entrepreneurship by U.S. News & World Report. To once again earn recognition as a top college in the country speaks to our status as a leader beyond entrepreneurship.

Our status as the No. 2 best college in the country is a signal to the world that the study of entrepreneurship has transcended business education. To be an entrepreneur is to be an innovative changemaker in any field or industry. It’s to be a champion for progress where our world needs it most. To be an entrepreneur is to be a leader who takes charge in the face of adversity without fear of uncertainty—traits that our society especially needs today.

As a lifelong entrepreneur and the president of Babson College, I am inspired by the passion and creativity of our community and proud of the many impacts we have outside of our campus. Babson’s global community of more than 46,000 alumni and our network of students, parents, and friends includes entrepreneurial leaders of all kinds who harness the power of their Babson education to make the world a better place.

That impact is evidenced by the many ways Babson students engage with our beloved neighbors in Wellesley and Needham. Your hospitality and embrace of our community play a special role in elevating the Babson experience. Your communities’ support of Babson undoubtedly played a role in our ascension to the No. 2 best college in the country.

I invite you to read this year’s Community Impact Report to explore and celebrate Babson’s many achievements. Our progress and momentum are thanks to you and our collective commitment to Babson College.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Caroline Daniels, Professor of Practice at Babson College’s Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship, presented compelling research on future trends and strategies in entrepreneurship and innovation. The session centered around five core values of Needham Public Schools, involving creative thinking and problem solving, responsibility and resilience, and communication and collaboration.

Babson Welcomes Community Resource Dogs Gracie and Hero

In 2024, Babson welcomed two new community resource dogs into Babson’s Public Safety Department to join Roger, the beloved golden retriever who has served as a campus community resource dog since 2021. Gracie is a Goldador named after the wife of Babson College founder Roger Babson, and Hero, a specialized explosive detection dog, supports local events by providing mental health support and community engagement, as well as serving crucial roles at major events including Commencement, the Boston Marathon, and Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. Be sure to come and say hello to our playful, furry friends if you spot them on campus!

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHTS

Babson Student Starts Food-Truck Franchise to Pay Tuition

Holden, Massachusetts, native Jake Bruce ’28 turned a gap year into a bold entrepreneurial venture by launching a DonutNV food truck franchise to fund his Babson education. Inspired by his father’s franchise consulting background, Bruce invested his tuition money into the business, serving fresh doughnuts and lemonade. Balancing academics and entrepreneurship, he’s learning real-world business skills while paying off his investment. His journey reflects Babson’s spirit of innovation, resilience, and hands-on learning.

If you are connected with a nonprofit organization and interested in learning more and getting involved in the Babson Board Fellows program, please contact Jen Faucon at jfaucon@babson.edu.

Good Fellows: Graduate Students Create Value on Nonprofit Boards

In accounting, I can apply what I’m learning directly to my business, which helps me understand the concepts better.”

— Jake Bruce ’28

The Babson Board Fellows program connects MBA students with nonprofit boards across Massachusetts, offering a unique opportunity to apply entrepreneurial skills to real-world challenges. From Boston to surrounding communities, fellows serve as nonvoting board members, contributing to causes like food insecurity and civil rights. Many of the fellows go on to secure a voting board membership after their fellowship tenure concludes. Moris Castillo MBA’24, for example, worked with the Lenny Zakim Fund in Boston, helping evaluate grant proposals and support grassroots organizations, and continues to do so as a voting board member today. This immersive experience not only strengthens local nonprofits but also empowers students to lead with purpose, reinforcing Babson’s commitment to social innovation and civic engagement throughout the Commonwealth.

This recognition is an important signal that entrepreneurship has grown to be recognized as a core competency across academia and beyond— something we have known all along. Babson’s status as the second-best college signals the world needs entrepreneurial leaders now more than ever.”

These insights are now informing Babson’s curriculum, executive education, and thought leadership, reinforcing our mission to prepare students to lead with agility, empathy, and impact.

The research paper was co-authored by the following Babson faculty members: Scott Taylor, Andrew Corbett, Wendy Murphy, Jeffrey Shay ’87, MBA’91, Keith Rollag, and Danna Greenberg.

COMMENCEMENT 2025

On May 17, more than 4,500 loved ones gathered to watch their beloved graduates cross the stage during Babson’s 2025 Commencement. Families, friends, and faculty cheered under the Isbrandtsen Field tent to honor the achievements of more than 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students. Speakers Linda Henry ’00, H’19 and Karen Clark Cole H’25 reflected on community, resilience, and leadership, and President Stephen Spinelli Jr. encouraged graduates to lead with purpose and empathy. The day marked a joyful milestone for the Babson community and its newest alumni.

I find it remarkable that the most powerful lessons I learned at Babson came not from a textbook but from my classmates—from my community. Then again, maybe it’s not so remarkable. The real point of Babson is not books and papers. It’s the community of people who pass through here every four years.”

— Linda Henry ’00, H’19, CEO and co-owner of Boston Globe Media
