PENSACOLA’S MOST HAUNTED

THE HISTORY & HAUNTINGS OF LOCAL LANDMARKS

Founded by the Spanish in 1559, Pensacola is considered America’s first and oldest European settlement. With a deep history dating back more than 460 years, the City of Five Flags has become a hotspot for ghosts and paranormal activity.

There are multiple local landmarks rumored to be haunted by ghosts of the past. From Seville Quarter’s ghostly bartenders to the spirits of former patients lurking the halls at the Old Sacred Heart Hospital in East Hill, countless ghostly tales and sightings continue to intrigue locals and tourists alike.

Here is a look at the history behind the hauntings of some of Pensacola’s most haunted landmarks, and the paranormal folklore surrounding them.

Seville Quarter

Did you know that one of Pensacola’s most popular night life attractions is rumored to be haunted? With a deep history stretching back nearly six decades, Seville Quarter is a bustling entertainment complex located in downtown Pensacola. Seville is widely known for its seven different rooms, each with a different theme and vibe.

With a history dating back to the 19th century, the large brick warehouse originally served as home to the Pensacola Cigar and Tobacco Company. The entertainment complex itself wasn’t established until 1967, when the derelict 19th-century warehouse was transformed into the original Rosie O'Grady's Warehouse saloon. Over its 150-year existence, the entertainment complex has experienced significant foot traffic.

One of the most well-known spirits that is said to make regular appear-

ances at the bar is Wesley Gibbs from the early 1990s. According to professor and author of Haunted Pensacola Alan Brown, Seville is haunted by the former bartender.

One day, shortly after Gibbs clocked in, Seville Quarter staff found his body in the cooler. After being rushed to the hospital, his cause of death was revealed to be a heart attack. Gibbs is said to remain at the bar, doing harmless pranks like turning on lights and triggering the hand dryers in the men’s restroom. Other guests through the years have reported hearing distant voices and laughter, as well as reports of feeling strange sensations and uneasiness.

You can experience the ghosts of Seville Quarter yourself with costumed guides and real paranormal investigators. Visit bit.ly/ MoonlightWalkingTour to schedule your very own candlelit tour— if you dare!

Pensacola Saenger Theatre

One of Pensacola’s oldest and most popular performance venues is also said to be haunted. Located at 118 S. Palafox St. in the heart of downtown Pensacola, sits the historic Pensacola Saenger Theatre.

Behind the theatre’s beautiful Spanish Baroque architecture, grand balconies and gilded decor lies a century’s worth of history. Also known as the “Grand Dame of Palafox,” the theatre celebrated its 100th anniversary this year.

As one may presume about a century-old theatre, there are several reports of ghost and spirit activity lurking the hallways of the theatre. According to Brown, the most notable of these spirits is a former unnamed employee who passed on the job. Allegedly, when the man was in the basement working on the boiler, it exploded and immediately killed him. The man is said to still linger throughout the

theatre, primarily in the balcony, where guests have seen apparitions and heard voices.

Brown also details an experience had by electricians in the early 2000s. The electricians were setting up lighting in the historic theatre when suddenly the lights began to flash randomly. The electricians were completely caught off guard by this, as there was no logical explanation for this phenomenon to occur.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the Saenger Theatre’s historic feel and vintage charm make it easy to wonder what is still lingering from the past. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can visit goretro. us and schedule a “Hop-on Hopoff” tour that includes a stop at the Saenger Theatre.

Old Sacred Heart Hospital

East Pensacola’s historic Sacred Heart Hospital is the oldest hospital in Pensacola and the oldest Catholic hospital in the state. Situated in East Hill at 1010 N. 12th Avenue, the historic hospital was originally established and first opened as Pensacola Hospital by the Daughters of Charity in 1915. The building features beautiful Gothic Revivalstyle architecture, much of which remains intact today. In 1948, the hospital’s name was changed to Sacred Heart Hospital.

Considering the emotional and intense nature of hospital environments, it is no surprise that the building is rumored to be home to many spirits. To this day, people have witnessed ghostly sights while visiting the building. Guests and employees have reported seeing nurse and patient apparitions stirring in the hospital halls.

Although there are no formal tours of the building, many of the halls are open to the public and you can keep an eye (and an ear) out for ghostly visitors when you

visit one of the many restaurants, shops and cafes that call the treasured building home.

Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum

The Pensacola Lighthouse lit up for the first time on New Year’s Day in 1859. Perched on a 40-foot bluff within Naval Air Station Pensacola, the lighthouse has long served as a guiding light for sailors throughout history.

The Pensacola Lighthouse’s past is strongly tied to conflict, especially during the Civil War. In 1861, an artillery exchange between the Confederate and Union forces damaged the lighthouse tower.

According to Alan Brown, visitors have reported hearing whispers, loud banging noises, screaming and several have even seen apparitions. These paranormal activities are thought to be caused by the former keepers and residents of the lighthouse, as well as runaway slaves.

Due to its reputation for having a large amount of paranormal activity, the historic Pensacola Lighthouse has become a popular spot for both professional and novice ghost hunters, and those eager to connect with the supernatural. The location has been featured on the Travel Channel’s Most Haunted Lighthouses and Ghost Hunters. Whether you’re a history buff, paranormal enthusiast or somewhere in between, the Pensacola Lighthouse is a unique part of local history that is worth a visit. It’s open for ghost tours on select Saturday evenings, though public access to NAS Pensacola must follow current Department of Defense procedures. It is recommended to check the website for specific instructions before you visit. For tickets and information, visit pensacolalighthouse.org.

Old Christ Church

If you’ve lived in Pensacola for a while, you likely know at least one

person who has been married at Old Christ Church. This gorgeous Norman Gothic-style church is a favorite place for Pensacolians to tie the knot. What you might not know, however, is the lengthy history behind this beautiful building that has led some to believe that it is haunted.

Built in 1832, Old Christ Church is located at 405 S. Adams St. in downtown Pensacola. The church had many rectors over its long time serving as a church. According to Brown, three of the church’s first 10 rectors were all buried under the church after passing away due to various diseases.

In 1988, an archaeological team from the University of West Florida (UWF) was asked to locate the coffins of the three deceased rectors underneath the building. After two months of searching, the remains of the reverends were found underneath the building and a funeral was held to reinter them.

After the funeral, one of the archaeology students reported a strange sighting; the student saw a figure resembling one of the rectors walking between the other two, barefoot and wearing long black robes. Unknown to the student, this description matches what the men were buried in.

The church’s grim history, long service and the tragic fates of its early leaders have led to many stories of ghostly activity. Visitors have reported unexplained phenomena, leading many to believe the spirits of the former rectors may still roam the halls of Old Christ Church.

You can find out for yourself, if you’re brave enough, by checking out Haunted History Village Walking Tours on October 10 and 11. Reservations are required and can be made online at historicpensacola.org/planyour-visit/haunted-happenings.■

PENSACOLA

COMPLETES HISTORIC REAL ESTATE ACQUISITION OF BAPTIST HOSPITAL LEGACY

CAMPUS

The City of Pensacola announced today the successful completion of its acquisition of the Baptist Hospital legacy campus located on E and Moreno Streets, marking a significant milestone in the city's revitalization efforts.

The property transfer, totaling approximately 41 acres, finalized through a donation agreement with Baptist Health Care, represents one of the most transformational development opportunities in Pensacola's recent history. The agreement originated from a letter of intent signed in early January 2024 by Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves and Mark Faulkner of Baptist Health Care, stating that Baptist would donate the legacy campus to the city for redevelopment upon the city securing sufficient funding for demolition and remediation.

"This is a monumental step forward for the entire Pensacola community, particularly for this historic neighborhood surrounding the campus," said Mayor D.C. Reeves. "This is a testament to what we can achieve when the city, our local partners, and the state legislature align on a vision to do what is right for our citizens. We take on these big projects so we can move uncertainty to action."

"The donation of our Legacy Campus to the City of Pensacola reflects Baptist Health Care’s enduring commitment to the community we’ve proudly served for more than seven decades,” said Mark Faulkner, CEO and President of Baptist Health Care. “We’re excited to see this property reimagined in a way that continues to benefit our entire region and we’re appreciative for the city’s visionary leadership in shaping a vibrant future for this

historic site. This collaboration among the city, the state of Florida, and the county will be a model for other communities to follow."

District 7 City Councilman Delarian Wiggins adds, “As we take down these walls, we are not erasing history. We’re laying the foundation for hope. What once served as a place of healing will rise again as a place of living, reminding us that every ending carries within it the promise of a new beginning.”

The acquisition includes the former hospital buildings and surrounding property that served the Pensacola community for over seven decades, before Baptist Health Care transitioned operations to its new healthcare complex in 2023. Next Steps and Timeline

With the property now under city ownership, the next phase involves comprehensive demolition and environmental remediation of the site. The remediation aspect will address any toxic materials that contribute to the project's complexity and cost.

The city has been working aggressively on the agreement and timeline, with demolition anticipated to begin at the end of this year and conclude in summer 2027.

Mayor Reeves and the city are planning a series of public engagement sessions to include residents of the surrounding neighborhood as well as members of the military.

The City of Pensacola will provide regular updates on the demolition timeline and future redevelopment plans for the site. Public input opportunities will be announced as the project progresses.

SOUTHWEST ESCAMBIA SPORTS

COMPLEX RECOGNIZED AS A STEWARDSHIP FOREST BY FLORIDA FOREST SERVICE

The Southwest Escambia Sports Complex has been recognized as a Stewardship Forest by the Florida Forest Service for recent improvements made by the Escambia County Natural Resources Conservation Division.

The Forest Stewardship Program, administered by the Florida Forest Service, is a voluntary program designed to encourage beneficial management practices on private, non-working forest lands. The Forest Stewardship Program recognizes owners who have improved and maintained vibrant forest resources, including timber, wildlife, soil and water quality, recreational and aesthetic value and forage resources. On occasion, government forest lands may be accepted into the program as “demonstration forests,” used to educate landowners of proper land management practices.

The Southwest Escambia Sports Complex is comprised of approximately 112 acres of forested conservation lands managed by the Natural Resources Conservation Division

and is part of the Florida Greenways and Trails System. Recent management activities have included planting of endangered White Topped Pitcher Plants, invasive plant removal, installation of educational signage and duck boxes, and forestry mulching.

Future plans for the conservation lands include additional trail amenities and routine prescribed burns. Prescribed burns keep the understory open to allow grasses and other small plants, such as wiregrass and pitcher plants, to dominate the landscape. Ash keeps the soil fertile and encourages new plant growth in the spring. By reducing fuel loads and keeping the understory clear, land managers reduce the chances of a larger, more dangerous wildfire.

The Southwest Escambia Sports Complex is located at 2020 Bauer Road. The nature trail is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset and can be accessed from several locations within the park. Please see the trail map for details.

Step into an evening of artistry and elegance as the leaders of PCC proudly present A Little Night Music . This intimate concert offers a rare opportunity to experience the extraordinary talents of the very individuals who nurture and inspire the voices of tomorrow.

Next, slip behind the curtain at Ovation: Speakeasy at the Saenger on January 30. Engage in an elegant world of smoky jazz, craft cocktails and elevated bites, all setting the scene for a night unlike any other.

Another way to support PCC and its mission is by becoming a Sponsor. With multiple levels to choose from and varying degrees of benefits, there are numerous options for you or your business to consider. Also this season, PCC plans to unveil a new way to support its mission through the “Sustainer” level of monthly giving that will help support families with less expendable income. There have never been more ways to support PCC and its growing mission!

PCC is committed to increasing accessibility to its life-changing arts education program, especially when it pertains to certain financial barriers. “We are firmly committed to creating a path for all singers, regardless of financial circumstances, to participate in our program,” Alex Gartner, Artistic & Executive Director, said.

PCC partners with the Escambia Children’s Trust (ECT) to provide free tuition and other benefits to singers who may not have otherwise joined its program. Another program designed to extend affordable choral opportunities to the community makes its return. PCC and the City of Pensacola bring Pensacola Sings to the city’s neighborhood resource centers, with a free performance on December 11 generously hosted by the Pensacola Saenger Theatre.

Finally, PCC announced earlier this year that it has become a direct service provider for Step Up for Students, a Florida nonprofit that empowers families with scholarships and educational resources to give children access to learning options that best fit their needs. PCC families can now utilize their Personalized Education Program (PEP) to cover the cost of tuition. There have truly never been more opportunities for singers to join PCC.

GULF WINDS CREDIT UNION DONATES $20,000 AND JOINS WOMEN BUILD TO SUPPORT PENSACOLA HABITAT

FOR HUMANITY

With hammers in hand and hearts full of purpose, Gulf Winds Credit Union joined forces with Pensacola Habitat for Humanity on October 1 to raise the walls of a new home as part of the annual Women Build event. In addition to a $20,000 donation, Gulf Winds team members volunteered on-site, participating in the construction of a home for a family in need.

This year’s build was made especially meaningful with the “Written in the Walls” initiative, launched by Gulf Winds in the weeks leading up to the event. Vibrant pink framing boards, which would become part of the new home, were placed in Gulf Winds lobbies across Alabama, Pensacola, and Tallahassee.

Members of the community were invited to sign the boards and share words of encouragement for the future homeowners.

On build day, those messages of hope became part of the foundation of the new home.

Since 1961, Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program has emphasized the impact women in the community make when

collaborating to fundraise and volunteer. Women Build came to Pensacola Habitat in 2014 and has continued to grow, increasing donations and volunteers every year.

This year, the event raised over $154,000 in donations towards homes for women and families in need.

“We are immensely grateful to have such generous support from Gulf Winds,” said Kim Wilson, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity Executive Vice President and COO. “Their kind donation and dedicated volunteers have helped us make significant progress towards our goal to inspire hope and provide for those in our community.”

“Gulf Winds is proud to endorse Pensacola Habitat. Since 2016, we’ve been inspired by their unwavering support of the community,” said Ashley Jansky, Gulf Winds Credit Union Chief Operations Officer. “We’ve seen the life-changing impact Habitat makes on local families and are honored to be part of such a great cause.”

JAZZ FOR JUSTICE 2025: MUSIC WITH

MEANING IN DOWNTOWN PENSACOLA, FEATURING NEW ORLEANS’ PRESERVATION HALL BRASS BAND

Get ready for another unforgettable celebration where music and community come together. Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) is proud to host Jazz for Justice once more on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Museum Plaza, 120 Church St., in the heart of Downtown Pensacola. Admission is free.

Made possible by the Pensacola Foo Foo Festival, Jazz for Justice brings the best of New Orleans and Pensacola jazz to the stage. Attendees will experience worldclass jazz performances, delicious food from local restaurants and food trucks, engaging vendors, and family-friendly activities, all while supporting free civil legal help for those most in need across North Florida. A Showcase of Brass and Jazz

This year’s Jazz for Justice lineup is tuned to perfection, with an afternoon that swings from smooth grooves to high-energy brass explosions.

Kicking things off is a hometown favorite, Whiskey and Water (Pensacola), whose sound flows as effortlessly as their name. With silky jazz vocals poured over Louisiana blues, a splash of reggae, and a kick of Southern rock guitar, they strike the perfect chord to get the crowd swaying.

Keeping the music alive, Bon Bon Vivant (New Orleans) turns up the tempo with a performance that’s equal parts spectacle and soul. Blending indie grit, Americana heart, and that unmistakable Crescent City flair, frontwoman Abigail Cosio and saxophonist Jeremy Kelley craft songs that dance between revelry and reflection, proof that their music is as much storytelling as it is rhythm.

Bringing it all home with a crescendo, the legendary Preservation Hall Brass Band (New Orleans) takes the stage as the event’s headlining act. This all-star brass ensemble, led by trumpeter Mark Braud, carries the torch of New Orleans’ musical heritage. From timeless parade anthems to spirituals

and classic jazz standards, their sound is the heartbeat of the Big Easy, and it’s guaranteed to bring the crowd to its feet.

Family-Friendly Fun

Jazz for Justice offers more than music; it’s a true community event. Families can enjoy interactive science activities from the Pensacola MESS Hall, games, and more. Bring kids, grandparents, for an afternoon that feels like a neighborhood block party with worldclass music. Spread out a blanket, set up lawn chairs, and let the little ones dance in the grass while relaxing under the autumn sky. Jazz for Justice makes it easy to enjoy good food, great music, and quality time together in the heart of Downtown Pensacola.

Legal Services of North Florida

Jazz for Justice is not just about great music; it’s about making a difference. Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) provides free civil legal help to low-income individuals and families across 16 counties, handling nearly 8,000 cases each year that impact more than 20,000 lives. Attendance and support ensure LSNF can provide civil legal aid to low-income individuals and families at no cost. With a commitment to justice and equity, LSNF strives to break down barriers and empower communities through legal advocacy and support.

The annual Pensacola Foo Foo Festival event series is produced by Art, Culture, and Entertainment, Inc. (ACE), taking place Oct. 30, 2025, through Nov. 10, 2025.

MAYOR D.C. REEVES ANNOUNCES

NEW SENIOR PARKING PERMIT AND RESIDENT DISCOUNT PROGRAM FOR CITY RESIDENTS

The City of Pensacola is excited to announce the launch of two new parking options designed to better serve city residents: a Senior Parking Permit and a Resident Discount Program, both available beginning Wednesday, Oct. 1. These initiatives are part of the mayor’s ongoing efforts to improve parking accessibility and affordability while upgrading the city’s permit technology. “We’re committed to creating a parking system that works for everyone,” Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “These new programs are about supporting our residents and seniors, while making it easier and more affordable for them to enjoy everything our city has to offer.”

The city is upgrading its parking permit technology to deliver a more user-friendly, efficient, and convenient experience for both current permit holders and new users.

As part of these improvements, two new programs have been created exclusively for city residents:

• SeniorPass – New! Discounted parking for senior residents of the City of Pensacola

• Resident Discount Program – New! 50% off standard parking rates for City of Pensacola residents

In addition, the updated system will continue to offer a variety of parking permit options, including:

• StreetPass AM –On-street day parking permit

• StreetPass PM On-street night parking permit

• JeffersonPass –Jefferson Street Garage permit

• LotPass Designated parking lot permit

• BoatPass –Boat ramp parking permit

These updates are designed to make parking more accessible and affordable, while providing flexible options to meet the diverse needs of Pensacola residents.

These new programs aim to provide affordable parking solutions and greater flexibility for residents. All permits are limited and subject to availability, so residents are encouraged to apply early.

The updated permit system will make it easier for residents to purchase and manage permits online, reducing wait times and simplifying the overall process.

TOURISM TO GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE CONTRIBUTES $514

MILLION TO LOCAL ECONOMIES

A new National Park Service report shows that 7.8 million visitors to Gulf Islands National Seashore in 2024 spent $411 million in communities near the park.

A total of 88% of the visitors were nonlocals. The park’s campgrounds continue to remain the top 3 most recreated RV campground in the national park system.

“People come to Gulf Islands National Seashore from far and wide to enjoy the emerald coast waters and world class, sugarlike sand beaches and rich cultural history of the seashore in Florida and barrier islands in Mississippi, which also translates to their supporting the various local gateway communities and associated economies,” said Superintendent Rick Clark. “We’re proud that visitation to Gulf Islands National Seashore also results in the support to our gateway communities, including Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, Gulf Breeze, and Navarre in Florida and Ocean Springs, Biloxi, and Gulf Port in Mississippi.”

The National Park Service report, 2024 National Park Visitor Spending Effects, finds that visitors spent $29 billion in communities near national parks. This spending provided $18.8 billion in labor income and $56.3 in economic output to the U.S. economy. The lodging sector had the highest direct contributions with $11.1 billion in economic output. Restaurants received the next greatest direct contributions with $5.7 billion in economic output.

An interactive tool is available to explore visitor spending, labor income, and total economic contribution by sector for national, state and local economies. Users can also view year-by-year trend data. The interactive tool and report are available on the NPS website.

UWF HAAS CENTER AWARDED $400K NSF EPIIC GRANT

The University of West Florida’s Haas Center has been awarded a $400,000 Enabling Partnerships to Increase Innovation Capacity, or EPIIC, grant from the National Science Foundation. The three-year grant will support the creation of a new Office of Industrial Innovation, which will serve as a front door to connect UWF faculty experts with regional industry needs, making it easier for businesses to access the University’s research capabilities and talent.

Housed within the Haas Center, the Office of Industrial Innovation will serve as a centralized hub for industry collaboration. The office will identify faculty subject matter experts, connect them with businesses in need of research and development support, and ensure partnerships move at the speed of business. This initiative will also create funded research opportunities for students, giving them valuable hands-on experience with real-world projects.

of Texas Permian Basin and University of Wisconsin–Parkside.

“The technical knowledge and skills of UWF faculty researchers is world-class, reflecting their extensive academic and professional preparation,” said Dr. Matthew Schwartz, professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and co-principal investigator. “The goal of NSF EPIIC and the UWF Office of Industrial Innovation is to make sure that UWF can easily establish contractual partnerships to connect regional industries, municipalities, NGOs and other groups with UWF researchers in support of regional research and development.”

If Animal Welfare Officers locate a missing pet, the owner will be notified by phone, email and/or letter. Staff will ask the owner to visit the shelter in person to verify ownership. Animal Welfare staff will never ask for funds to be sent digitally to redeem a pet or access a personal item. Redemption fees will be calculated at the time of redemption and paid in person. If your pet is missing, please check 24petconnect.com under your zip code and the “Escambia County Florida Animal Services” location. Please visit the shelter in person to identify your missing pet. The shelter is located at 200 W. Fairfield Drive and is open Monday-Friday, noon to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit the Federal Trade Commission website to learn more about verification code scams.

“With this seed funding, we aim to establish mechanisms that enable our researchers to pursue public- and private-sector opportunities at the speed of business, unbound by the constraints of the academic calendar,” said Nicole Gislason, executive director of UWF’s Haas Center and co-principal investigator.

Anyone who has received a scam text message, call or other form of communication should report it to the FTC. Visit reportfraud.ftc.gov to report scams or fraud to the FTC online.

The grant is part of a project called Advancing Regional Innovation through Sustainable Engagement, or ARISE. The project’s goal is to enhance institutional capacity for applied research partnerships with industry, government and other educational institutions, strengthening each university’s role in regional economic development. UWF is one of five universities comprising the ARISE initiative, along with Frostburg State University, Northern Virginia Community College, University

The EPIIC program was designed to help smaller research universities like UWF expand their role as key contributors to regional economic growth. The grant will allow UWF to build the infrastructure and processes needed to better partner with private industry, support workforce development and ultimately strengthen the region’s capacity for innovation. The effort also positions UWF to contribute to national research priorities in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, biotechnology, cybersecurity, energy efficiency technologies and materials science.

“UWF is full of talent that some in the community are not aware of,” said Dr. Mohamed Khabou, dean of the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering and co-principal investigator. “This grant will help unveil these talents to the regional industries and kickstart new opportunities in key areas of the economy.”
