PROGRAMME Official show

Welcome

from Robert & Lisa Lemieux

As we enter our second decade of sponsorship, we are proud to welcome you to the British Dressage National Championships. Seeing so many riders competing here, following some amazing performances at the European Championships at Crozet, is a real pleasure.

Congratulations to our #TeamLeMieux riders – we’re looking forward to catching up with Carl Hester and seeing Becky Moody, Lewis Carrier riding and many more.

At LeMieux we love to support riders coming up through the levels of equestrian sport, and the Nationals are a fantastic showcase for future dressage talent. As the event grows, we expect to see some serious competition and worthy winners.

Time for the action to begin!

Best of luck to all competitors, and as always a huge thank you to the hard-working judges and officials.

Their invaluable contribution has helped the championships go from strength to strength, and we invite you to join us in raising a glass at the Nationals Welcome Party on Friday at 6.30pm in the LeMieux Pavilion marquee to celebrate our sport and the achievements of our athletes.

On behalf of British Dressage, I’d like to thank everyone who makes these championships possible – including all of our riders, grooms, trainers, owners, breeders, officials, volunteers, and supporters. Your passion and commitment are what make the LeMieux National Championships so special. We are also hugely grateful to our organiser Kelvin Bywater and the team at Show Direct, who provide such a wonderful experience for competitors and spectators alike.

A year on... Lewis Carrier

Star of Somerford Park and first-time LeMieux National Champion, Lewis Carrier concluded an amazing year with the highest competition accolade in the BD roster, and a place on the long list for Paris 2024.

Together with his dancing partner Diego, Lewis proves that hard work and dedication can take you through the BD levels, right to the very top of the sport.

What are your reflections following your win at nationals last year?

Winning the Grand Prix at the Nationals last year was one

of those bucket list moments. There’s an amazing list of riders and horses on the BD website for the roll of honour, seeing my name and Diego’s alongside those is pretty awesome.

We ended the year even better, I won our first CDI at Senior level at Wellington and then went on to have an amazing show at the London International Horse Show where we scored a personal best in the Grand Prix.

Taking that into 2025 was brilliant. Matching the expecation and same success was something, but we did our first Nations Cup

in Lier and finished fourth in the Freestyle alongside some amazing horse and rider combinations.

Tell us about the journey with your superstar Diego?

It’s been a long journey with Diego. He’s 16 now and I’ve had him since he was four-years-old.

We’ve been to the Nationals three times at Grand Prix, so to win it last year was incredible. We’ve been through the levels together from Novice to Grand Prix; we’ve done Young Rider teams, U25 teams and

now senior Nations Cups teams.

Being nominated for Paris 2024 last year was a dream come true. He’s a fantastic horse and trying to find other horses who live up to his expectation is not easy!

Who’ll be following in Diego’s footsteps in the future?

We have two amazing nine-year-olds who’ll hopefully step up to Grand Prix next year, following in Diego’s footsteps. They’re both competing successfully at Prix St Georges and Intermediate I.

Rubi (Rubico) is a big chestnut gelding owned by two lovely ladies who’ve supported me for the past couple of years.

And there’s Freddie, who is a horse I’ve had since he was three. I backed him myself and we’ve been on the journey together. He’s now looking really promising for the future.

What’s special about the National Championships?

The Nationals is such a fantastic event. BD and the show team do an amazing job of organising it. Without the sponsors support, especially LeMieux, it wouldn’t be possible and it wouldn’t be as amazing as it is now. We had beautiful rugs and trophies last year provided by LeMieux. Without all of those people the National Championships wouldn’t be what they are.

Finally, what would you say to people out there looking up to you and your achievements, to inspire their competition journeys?

Believe you can do it.

There’s lots of people who think it’s just not possible. When I got Diego at four, I’d have never thought we’d have achieved what we have. But keep believing, and working up to that point, you’ll get there.

If you believe you can do it there’s absolutely no reason that you can’t.

Announcing Anna

Demonstration specialist and top British rider Anna Ross leads this year’s LeMieux masterclass. Get ready to be entertained and educated, as Anna leads two fascinating sessions in the LeMieux Arena across the weekend.

On Saturday, enjoy ‘Grand Prix Illustrated’ where Anna will demonstrate the Grand Prix movements and talk through what it takes to make it at the top level of the sport. Expect an exciting presentation of the movements, with Anna’s typical artistic flair and audience participation. Humour, horses and high-quality technical information will underpin the first of two inspiring demonstrations.

On Sunday, we’re dialling up the focus on young horses and breeding.ll team up with Dr Eva-Maria Livesey to lead a unique, Nationals-first session on how to breed future superstars. Expect to see different stallions and learn more about what you should be looking for with your own mares in mind.

Devon-based Anna is an international rider and coach, renowned for producing and training elite Sport Horses.

Over the past 25 years, Anna has proudly represented Great Britain on the global stage, competing at events such as the European Championships, Aachen CDIO, the London Horse Show, FEI World Cup qualifiers and the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses. Among her notable accomplishments are an individual tenth place finish at the FEI European Championships, a World Cup qualifier victory in Warsaw, and a CDI triumph earlier this year in Le Mans, France.

Anna’s expertise extends to coaching at the highest levels, with pupils contesting the Olympic Games, World

Championships, Youth Championships and the Pan American Games. Notably, Anna has coached her long-time team member Beth Bainbridge to career success over 14 years; Beth will join Anna in the line-up at the LeMieux Nationals.

In recognition of her career success, Anna has been a recipient of the British Equestrian Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dressage, and was presented with the Davison Award at the London International Horse Show.

In addition to her competitive and coaching roles, Anna is a familiar voice and writer within the sport. She regularly contributes to the dressage section of Horse & Hound and can often be found providing commentary at major events.

Horses first at the Nationals

Our commitment to horse welfare runs deep, and we’re pleased to be making progress from local shows and training, right to the top. Read about the introduction of noseband measuring at the Nationals.

Assessing the tightness of nosebands is something that has been done for a long time, but before the stewards were using their fingers. We decided to modernise the process. This device is much more objective and consistent, so it means fairness for the horse and the athlete.

British Dressage is committed to the welfare of horses through good horsemanship and excellent training at all levels - it’s at the heart of everything we do.

We’re also committed to making progress in alignment with the FEI and other dressage nations; this year, the BD Training & Education team have been supporting the roll out of the noseband measuring tool, approved and introduced by the FEI.

The device, which is designed to allow a universal, consistent approach to measuring noseband fit, is already in use at International competitions by FEI stewards and has been part of an on-going process within the BD system.

The traditional method of measuring whether a noseband is too tight was to insert two fingers between the noseband and the horse’s face. Dr Russell MacKechnie-Guire

commented on the drawbacks of this method: “The method is believed to have merged from veterinary and equestrian best practice. However, it’s inaccurate because assessor’s finger sizes differ and there was no firm consensum on where to take the measurement - on the side of the head, the front of the nose, or how the fingers should be orientated (side by side or stacked on top of each other).

Research and development has informed the design of the noseband device, which will only pass under nosebands which are fastened in a way that is optimal for the horse’s welfare.

Several studies looking at the effects of noseband tightness on the horse’s comfort were taken into account to determine the specific dimensions of the device.

At National level, BD stewards attended briefing and training on how to use the device in August 2025, with the full roll out due from January 2026

onwards, where the device will be used at all stewarded BD competitions.

The LeMieux National Championships are a key point in the roll out process; the event will be the first major BD fixture where the device has been used at national level. At the start of the show, the stewarding team - led by Dan Chapman - will be briefed on how to use the device, and how to ensure the process is as positive as possible for both horse and rider.

The LeMieux Arena, where the feature Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle classes take place, will see all classes measured using the new tool. But riders taking part in classes across all arenas are invited to have their nosebands checked by the stewards, at any time. Riders taking part in the main arena classes are also welcome to have their nosebands checked when they arrive in the warm up arena too. Both the post-test checks, and the on-demand checks in general exercise or warm up provide all

competing riders with a great opportunity to familiarise their horse with the device, and be sure that their tack and equipment in use is correct.

If you’re taking part in the championships, here’s what to expect:

Stewards will wear new disposable gloves for each horse, a super, standard biosecurity measure.

As recommended in officials training, the steward will approach the horse from the left and size and gently squeeze the top of the noseband to allow the FEI Measurement Device to be used.

After testing, the device will be wiped using disinfectantagain ensuring the best standards of biosecurity.

We’re pleased to be making a positive step in horse welfare with the use of the FEI Measurement Device at the LeMieux Nationals. To find out more about BD’s commitment to horse welfare, visit: www.britishdressage.co.uk.

EQUISOFT GIRTH

The Equi-Soft® Saddle Girth: Maximum freedom of movement and breathing for your horse

The Equi-Soft® Saddle Girth is an innovation for horses and riders that offers a unique combination of benefits:

Elastic Rings: The elastic rings of the Equi-Soft girth expand and contract with the horse's breathing, ensuring constant and uniform pressure distribution. This allows the horse to expand its chest comfortably.

Uniform Pressure Distribution: The girth's ergonomic and fan-shaped design wraps around the chest from below and slightly to the sides, offering freedom of movement while significantly reducing girthiness

Stress Reduction during Girth Tightening: The elastic rings of the Equi-Soft reduce girth pressure, minimizing stress levels in the horse

Lower Heart Rate: A scientific study on various girths demonstrated that all horses showed a significantly lower heart rate when using the Equi-Soft girth

Rider Profile Sophie Wells OBE

Paralympic superstar Sophie Wells rides two horses at the Championships this year. Both young talents take part in the BETTALIFE Novice Gold class, offering spectators the chance to see a true British dressage legend in action.

Sophie Wells OBE is a world-class rider and trainer, with European, World and Paralympic medals to her name. Sophie’s skill in the saddle has seen her earn success in both non-disabled and para sport, whilst building her reputation as an outstanding horsewoman, people person and coach –bringing two riders to championship medal standard, along with many other happy clients and horses. Sophie’s ethos sees her seek to build special connections with every horse she encounters, and this speaks volumes in both her training and results.

Sophie started riding at the age of eight at her local riding school and took up able-bodied dressage at the age of twelve. In 2008 she became the first para dressage rider to win a non-disabled international competition, after she finished first in the junior international class at the Hickstead Under-21 international.

She was the first para dressage rider to compete on both an able-bodied Junior team and the para dressage team in the same year (2010), competing on the dressage Young Rider European team, as well as being selected as part of the World Equestrian Games para dressage squad.

Sophie was selected for her first Paralympic Games in London 2012, where she won team gold along with silvers in the individual and freestyle competitions. She was also selected for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, where

she took individual gold and freestyle silver, and helped the team defend their gold. She has been on the British team at every senior championship since 2011, picking up an impressive 35 major medals along the way.

Sophie was selected for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games with World and European medallist C Fatal Attraction, but a late fitness concern for ‘Jorge’ saw inexperienced Don Cara M step up to take his place. The pair pulled out all the stops to help the team retain their Paralympic title, and also took individual silver.

In 2023, Sophie brought forward new ride LJT Egeberggards Samoa for the FEI Para Dressage European Championship in Riesenbeck, where they took team and freestyle bronze. The pair went on to achieve a further individual Grade V bronze medal at Paris 2024.

Meet the star Nationals newcomers

Trainers and riders often use the knowledge they’ve acquired to venture into the hugely reponsible yet rewarding role of judging. The judges at the National Championships play a vital role in the success of the event.

Cawley

“Being able to compete at the Nationals has come as a complete surprise for me this year! I’ve always dreamt of being able to ride at the National Championships so to be able to do this with Dolly who I’ve only had for just under a year, is a complete honour. After losing my international dressage horse, Bam, at the start of the year, I never thought I’d get a chance to compete at Nationals and so to now be here still feels surreal.

It has only been possible thanks to the unwavering support from the AM Dressage team, especially from my coach Justine Sole, who has been on our journey from the beginning and has

truly believed in our partnership. My mum and dad have also made huge sacrifices and so this moment is not just about competing, but about celebrating the dedication, hardwork, and belief of everyone who has been part of this journey.

This past year during my gap year, before starting a Law degree in September, has been a chance to dedicate myself fully to training and competing, and I couldn’t have imagined a more special way to round it off that riding down the centre line at my first Nationals.

For me, it is a dream come true - and a reminder that, even through setbacks, incredible things are possible with the right people by your side.

This year is my debut National Championships with my cob Yago. He is an absolute super cob and we have been competing successfully at British Dressage for five years. Together we have competed in seven Area Festival Championships but this year we set our sights on our first ever regional championship as we had never done one before. He was absolutely brilliant and we had the best time, the cherry on top was placing 10th and getting a rosette.

A few weeks later I found out that we had qualified for the National Championships on a wild card. I couldn’t actually believe it, my goal for the year was just to qualify for and compete at the regionals, let alone get a ticket to the Nationals at our first one!

It is really special to be going with Yago. We have trained together since he was a young horse and have moved up the levels learning everything as we go. He turns lots of heads at shows due to his striking

presence and of course his feathers! He tries his best for me in every arena and I have loved our journey together so far. It is a privilege to ride a cob in these championships, he deserves to be there and I ride him with nothing but pride.

We are really looking forward to attendeding the National Championships and taking in every moment.

Rosie Coulson

MM Midnight Caviar Prelim Silver

I home produced my mum’s Connemara stallion from unaffiliated Prelim to BD Medium level, he then had the past year off to focus on breeding. I purchased MM Midnight Caviar (an 8 year old warmblood) in April 2024 when I was on a ‘research mission’ but fell in love with her the moment I saw her (oops!). I purchased her from the Maxted-Massey stud and spent lots of time getting to know her. It was quite a step up going from a 14.1hh pony to a 16.3hh horse! We started competing in December 2024 with no aspirations for

championships. In our first season we managed to win multiple shows at prelim scoring 70+% and qualified for the area festival champs. This season I thought we should attempt our first regionals together with no expectations of qualifying. After all it was our first year of competing together and the standard is so high!

Qualifying for the nationals was completely unexpected but incredibly exciting! We placed 2nd out of a huge class at Bury Farm. It is extremely rewarding as I produce her myself at home and try and keep her lifestyle as natural as possible. For example she was out in the field the night before regionals with freezer bags covering her plaits!

I can’t wait to get to nationals as this will also be our first stay over show together! I’m really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere and being able to watch the pros at the same show that I’m competing at!

Jason Inchley

Rubin Ryella

Grade II Para Gold

Jason is competing for the first time on his best friend, Rubin Ryella, aka Ella. Ella is his first horse and has been with the Inchley family for seven years.

They have gone from being RDA National Champions to competing successfully at 2* CPEDI competition. They were also on the winning Para Home Nations team this year representing the South & West and have been Grade 2 champions at this event for the past two years.

Jason and Ella are both trained by Mark Cunliffe & Becky Monk at Lakefield EC in Camelford, North Cornwall where Ella is also kept.

Medal moments

Welcome home our medallists from a memorable summer of sport. The medal parade takes place in the LeMieux Arena on Saturday 14 September at 16.00, supported by Sytner Land Rover Knutsford.

Britain’s success overseas has seen new achievements completed and more medallists made.

At the first FEI Championship of the summer, the U25s and Young Riders headed to Kronberg in Germany where they brought home some super results. It was the U25 team of Annabella Pidgley, Harrison Ashton, Lilah Gibbs and Charlotte Lutener to make it to the podium, bringing home Britain’s first team medal in this age category since 2018. That year, World Champion Lottie Fry was on the team, have we seen our next senior team superstar in

action this summer?

There were no medals for the Young Riders this year, but some great performances showed much promise for the future.

Next up, the British Junior team also returned to the podium - earning a second brilliant bronze of the summer. Isla Sully, Myles Graham, Abigail Gray and Demi Howard-Cartwright all put in a stellar effort. At the same show in Le Mans, Britain also fielded it’s first ever Children on Horses team; a wonderful achievement and some great experience earned.

The seniors also enjoyed a French foray for their FEI European Championships, held in Crozet. Carl Hester, Becky Moody, Lottie Fry and Andrew Gould collected a team silver after an intense contest with the gold medal winning German team. It was a super event with lots to celebrate.

Finally, Britain’s para dressage team narrowly missed the podium, finishing a valiant fourt; whilst there were individual bronze medals to cheer on for Mari Durward-Akhurst, and team newcomers Jemima Green and Nicola Naylor.

Going Green BD & Sustainability

British Dressage recognises that protection of the environment is an integral part of our business and a prime responsibility for everyone in our sport, at every level.

We want to promote positive change to enable good health and wellbeing for all participants in our sport, whether equine or human, while respecting the world that we live and compete in. We take climate change seriously and are committed to driving innovation and investing in technology to minimise our impact on the environment.

While we are an active and physical sport, with both a

national and international dimension, we want to enjoy participating and competing in a way that respects and protects the environment. We believe that environmental damage is avoidable and by working collectively with our staff, volunteers and stakeholder groups, we will do everything that is reasonably practicable to mitigate or prevent this.

There’s a keen interest in and awareness about

environmental sustainability across the equestrian sector and a willingness to promote change where needed to minimise our carbon footprint and reduce unnecessary waste. Everyone understands there’s much more to be done, from the operational infrastructure and energy used at our events, to sustainable travel policies and use of recyclable materials.

As a National Governing Body for the sport of dressage in the UK, we aim to lead by example, by taking a critical look at how we operate, quantify our consumption and waste, and set tangible targets to reduce, offset or eliminate it. Some practical examples of some of the sustainability initiatives we have already implemented in British Dressage include:

• Digitalisation of activities, by using paperless processes and resources.

• Use of recycled paper and biodegradable packaging for BD magazine and other membership materials.

• Implementation of energy efficiency and recycling measures at BD Head Office.

• Transfer of paper-based documentation to online storage facilities and systems.

• Implementation of hybrid working policy, resulting in a 40% reduction in commuting to and from the office.

• Reduction in the amount of travel required by staff, volunteers and stakeholders by hosting virtual meetings, training, seminars and events online.

• Shared use of a single hybrid pool vehicle for teams for attending competitions and events.

At the LeMieux Nationals, keep an eye out for the recycling bins; we recycle waste from the championships, so any cans, cartons and items that qualify need to go in the right place, to enable this to happen! You’ll spot our green stickers.

What you can do

There are many things we can do to help the environment when out competing. We know that a healthy environment supports the health and wellbeing of humans and horses alike, therefore by prioritising both the environment and embedding it as a consideration in all of our decisions, we can ensure a more sustainable future for everyone. This includes when we are out competiing;

Take with you reusable coffee cups and water bottles. Whilst you are at a venue, there may be an onsite coffee van or cafe, we can reduse the number of disposable coffee cups used if you remember

Our partners

ADAS Equine, a leading provider of specialist consultancy services for environmental land management and sustai nability solutions for horse owners, has partnered with British Dressage to become the Official Equine Environmental & Sustainability Partner.

As part of the wider ADAS agricultural group, the team at ADAS Equine will support British Dressage’s Sustainability Strategy, by providing members with expert guidance on land

to take your own with you. This is the same for water bottles, the majority of our venues will allow you access to clean running water, we can reduce the number of water bottles we buy, when refilling our own.

Where safe to do so sharing transport with someone else going to the same event as you can help reduce the emissions created by travelling back and forth from a competition. If you are able to travel mulipul horses together, or travel alongside your coach, or support team, we can reduce our carbon footprint.

management, sustainable equine facilities, and environmental impact reduction, ensuring a healthier future for both horses and the environment.

Over the next year, ADAS Equine will be working with British Dressage to share expert advice and guidance through editorial content, videos, on-site appearances at key events. British Dressage members get to use ADAS’ services at a discounted price, plus members of British Dressage will be able to attend a series of member-only webinars, that

will further enhance your knowledge to help benefit your land and equestrian facilities. Keep an eye on the BD website for upcoming ADAS Equine events.

ADAS Equine advisers can support you in helping improve your land management, whether you manage a one-acre livery field through to a large stud or estate.
