What a wonderful season we have ahead of us –our November holidays are full of good reading, good eating and thankful thinking. Count me in!
Thanksgiving is when we gather with friends and family for an annual communal meal. We come together to acknowledge how fortunate we are to be in one another’s lives. Staff at the library feel the same way about the people we serve daily. We look forward to your visits and your presence at our events. Thanks for coming!
You can make this year’s Thanksgiving extra memorable with a new twist on that special meal. We have thousands of cookbooks to walk out the door with and over seven hundred online food and wine magazines to download. Browse your free choices on the Overdrive Magazines page. It’s like going to the newsstand with an unlimited gift card.
We’ve cooked up some great Thanksgiving programs for you as well. Not your average fare, Carver Ranches Library is presenting “Real Thanksgiving: As Told by Native Americans.” We’ve also set up a Thanksgiving photoshoot at Main Library, to reach out to those who couldn’t make it to the table this year.
We are all grateful for the sacrifices of our veterans and their families. From basic training to the battlefield, to readjusting to life at home, these men and women give so much. Our library preserves their stories year round with the Veterans History Project, in conjunction with the Library of Congress.
As always, we will be honoring our veterans with many programs, such as “Service to Our Nation” at Margate Library, combining personal stories and entertainment; “How to Search for Military Records” (online); and an “Inspiring Veterans Day
Speech” with a special guest speaker at the Marta-Beth Friedman Stirling Road Branch.
I’m also thankful for the great group of kids that come to our libraries. We have a bright future to look forward to when this generation comes of age. The staff loves to entertain and challenge them academically. We’re doing that for teens with two November programs: Beatmaker Bootcamp, a series in music production and audio engineering, and College Football Saturdays, where we use math to make predictions.
And for our littlest library kids? It’s The 24th Annual StoryBook Festival! Families need only Follow the Yellow Brick Road to celebrate the Wizard of Oz at Southwest Regional Library. This beloved festival brings a day of storytelling, book readings, arts and crafts, and a visit the Fantasy Forest. The first 1,000 children will receive a free book, and all kids are encouraged to come in costume and join the legendary Storybook Parade. Some of our young parents have special memories of coming as children or teen volunteers.
Finally, the book selection for the November meeting of my Director’s Book Club is These Precious Days. In this collection of essays, New York Times bestselling author Ann Patchett reflects on home, family, friendships and writing. All good things to be thinking about when we meditate on our blessings this season.
Make some wonderful memories with us and those around you!
Sincerely,
Allison Grubbs

Debbie is a lifelong South Florida resident, and has lived in Broward since 1984.
“I’ve been using the Broward County Library for several years now, but more electronically. Every morning, I read a magazine or a book on Libby. It provides me with some inspiration for the day,” she says. But recently she has had more free time and wanted to find ways to be more active and connect with her community.
“I noted that there were classes in the Pompano Library on tai chi for arthritis. I signed up and attended these classes and I was totally hooked.
It’s an amazing program. I am socializing with people, primarily in my age group, and I’m learning something new. Tai chi itself is a very good form of exercise. I just enjoy all aspects of it.”
“I’m really focusing now on my age group because I feel that retired people sometimes become isolated in their homes. This is a wonderful way to interact with other people and to get exercise, or maybe an art program. I would recommend that they learn how to research the Broward County Library app because it provides you with the ability to identify various types of programs. They have a great filtering system. You can filter activities by date, by location, and by type.”
