Working Together to Make Student Life Better

I had the privilege of meeting Emma Reynolds MP, who represents the Wycombe Constituency and is also the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. She was joined by her brilliant team, and I attended as your representative for Bucks Students’ Union and Buckinghamshire New University This meeting was a great chance to talk about the issues that matter most to our students and how we can work together to make life at BNU even better.

Celebrating What’s Going Well

I spoke about how the partnership between Bucks Students’ Union and the University is stronger than ever. A big part of that success comes from The Big Deal, which gives every student free access to sports, societies, and activities without hidden costs. It’s one of the ways we’re helping to reduce the cost of living while keeping student life active, social, and fun. We also looked ahead to some exciting new projects designed to boost wellbeing, support, and engagement across our campuses.

Talking About the Challenges

Alongside celebrating what’s working, we focused on some of the real-world challenges facing students right now, including:

• Making transport more affordable –especially free travel for under 22s.

• Student safety on and off campus.

• Housing and accommodation issues, which continue to affect many students across Wycombe and beyond.

Emma Reynolds and her team were very open to these conversations, and we agreed to keep working together to push for positive change in these areas.

What This Means for You

Meetings like this are about making sure your voice is heard at every level — locally, nationally, and within the University. When students speak up, real progress can happen. I’m excited about the next steps in this collaboration and confident that, together, we can continue to improve the student experience at BNU.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT BNU

This October, we’re proud to celebrate Black History Month across our campuses, a month dedicated to learning, celebrating, and coming together as a community. The College of Health and Society (Nursing and Midwifery) is also delighted to announce that we will be hosting our 2nd Annual Black History Month Event, bringing students and staff together for a day of inspiration, culture, and connection.

Black History Month is not only about reflecting on the past, but also about recognising and celebrating the voices, creativity, and achievements of Black people today. At BNU, we’re creating a programme that’s engaging, inclusive, and inspiring with something for everyone to get involved in.

What’s happening this month?

Black History Month Menu

Our Catering team will be serving up special menus inspired by dishes from across the African and Caribbean regions. It’s a chance to taste authentic flavours, try something new, and celebrate culture through food.

Guest Speakers

We’re welcoming incredible guest speakers to campus this month, such as: Peter Ashiagbor, Jordan Abankwah, Shaunagh Brown and more inspiring voices to be announced! They’ll be sharing their experiences, journeys, and insights – giving us all the chance to listen, learn, and be inspired.

Our guest speakers will be delivering talks across both High Wycombe and Uxbridge campuses:

• Uxbridge Campus: Friday 17 October, 10:00 – 15:30

• High Wycombe Campus: Friday 17 October, 10:00 – 16:30

This is your chance to hear their inspiring stories and insights firsthand.

Live Entertainment and Performances

Expect music, performances, and creative showcases across our venues. From spoken word to live music, it’s a celebration of talent, culture, and connection.

BNU Student Forum

We are shaping the future of placements at BNU, and your voice is essential!

Placements are a key part of your university experience, and we want to make sure they give you the very best start for your career.

This is your chance to tell us what matters most to you, including:

• How placements can build your employability and confidence.

• The support you need from BNU to succeed.

• The types of opportunities that best fit your career goals.

• The skills and experiences that give you the best edge for jobs.

Volunteering Opportunities

Looking to give back? A special opportunity will take place at the Caribbean Elderly Hairoun Day Centre in High Wycombe on Tuesday 21 October at 11:00am. This is a fantastic way to engage directly with the local community and celebrate Black heritage in a meaningful way. Why it matters?

Black History Month is more than a series of events, it’s about education, recognition, and celebrating diversity on campus. It’s a chance to strengthen our community, honour contributions, and spark important conversations that continue long after October ends.

Join us in celebrating Black History Month at BNU, a month of food, culture, entertainment, and learning.

Everyone is welcome, and we can’t wait to see you at the events!

By attending, you’ll directly influence how placements are designed and delivered at BNU. Monday 27 October 2025 2.00pm Room S3.02A/B

Free refreshments will be provided, come along, share your ideas, and enjoy a relaxed session with your fellow students.

Hello everyone!

I hope that everyone is settling into the new term and getting back into your studies. What an amazing two weeks of Freshers Fortnight we’ve had!

From a record-breaking attendance at Fresher’s Fair, with over 1,500 people attending and signing up to new clubs and societies and volunteering opportunities.

It was a real joy to welcome back returning students and meeting all the new students throughout the first two weeks back.

We’ve already had some fantastic live acts coming down to the venue, from Aston Merrygold, Hardy Caprio and Sigala DJ set. It’s been a packed couple of weeks, but there is so much more to come. It was the perfect way to start what is an exciting year ahead.

Joe Burrell

Vice President Achievement and Belonging

joe.burrell@bnu.ac.uk @buckssuvpab

This past week, we have celebrated International Lesbian Day, with an article written by Laura, chair of LGBTQIA+ Society, highlighting the importance of inclusivity, the history of the word “Lesbian” and the power of community. If you would like to read the article, it is on our Students Union homepage.

We are also hosting student Mixers for various student groups over the next few weeks, so come down and enjoy the company and free snacks that we have!

Our brilliant student volunteers have been helping at Rusty’s Retreat, keeping it looking fresh and creating a calm space for everyone to enjoy. Keep your eyes peeled for future volunteering opportunities in the coming weeks.

We as elected officers and the Students’ Union team showed our support for World Mental Health Day by wearing green across the campus – a simple yet powerful reminder that it is okay to talk and reach out for help.

Looking ahead, we’ve got plenty more lined up. On Tuesday 21 October, we will be celebrating Diwali, with an event full of colour, culture, and connection.

We’re also excited to host a Black History Month Conference, welcoming amazing guest speakers who’ll be sharing their voices, stories and achievements.

And finally, we’ll be launching our Rainbow Laces Campaign, showing our ongoing support for the LGBTQIA+ community, and promoting inclusion in sport and in student life. If you want to get involved and get a pair of rainbow laces, pop into my office or email me at joe.burrell@bnu.ac.uk

Freshers’, Events and Meeting You All!

Freshers’

I’ve been meeting a lot of you during open days, welcome talks and at Fresher’s Fair!

It’s been so lovely to see our new, diverse intake of members. During Freshers’ Fortnight, I’ve seen many of you party, test your knowledge at The Big Quiz and support your fellow BNU students at Jam Night!

We’ve started the year with a banger line-up, and I can’t wait to see you all at events throughout the year.

KEEPING YOURSELF SAFE IN A NEW TOWN

• Remember to lock your doors and windows at night and when leaving your home unattended.

• Ensure your home is well-lit.

• Give your trusted friends any contact numbers for a parent, carer, etc.

• Let people know where you are, and where you’re going, or consider enabling your location for a trusted friend or family member.

• Plan your journeys. Find out about transport in the local area.

• Look at a map of your new town. Learn how to reach the closest bank, police station, hospital, and, if applicable, embassy or consulate.

• Go out with friends.

• Follow your gut instincts.

• Don’t get into unnecessary altercations.

• Don’t walk around with your phone on display.

• When walking alone, look confident and walk with purpose.

• When walking alone and listening to music, don’t have your headphone volume too loud.

Campaigns

1. Student Safety:

I’ve continued taking meeting with Thames Valley Police and the Council to try and improve some hotspots in the community. Jean Marc and I hope to see these changes to start taking shape shortly!

During Freshers’ Fair, I handed out leaflets for ‘Tips on how to keep yourself safe in a new town’, including general tips and tips for drinking and spoke to you to make sure you all felt comfortable around moving to a new town. If you haven’t adjusted well, I would suggest reaching out to The Advice Centre.

2. Gender Based Violence:

In collaboration with Joe, Kelly (Activities Coordinator- Volunteering and Charitable Fundraising), two Student Voice Officers, Caitlin, and Evie-Mae, and a few societies, we have been working on a Gender Based Violence campaign which we hope to launch soon. Keep your eyes peeled for what’s coming up!

KEEPING YOURSELF SAFE IN A NEW TOWN

• Report any unwarranted behaviour to the community officers.

• If you’re in a pub, bar, or club and you see something that makes you feel uncomfortable, tell security or a staff member.

• You can Ask for Angela or Clive if you feel uncomfortable.

• Practice safe drinking – have a good meal before drinking alcohol, and drink water throughout the night.

• Only go out with the people you trust and stay together.

• Keep your phone charged – consider carrying a portable charger.

• Bring cash for in case your phone dies.

• Don’t walk home alone late at night – tell friends or family where you are and consider using the SSHH Bus or walking with friends. When walking home, keep to well-lit roads.

• Consider carrying a personal alarm.

• Watch your drink – consider using a drinks stopper or drinks cover.

• If you can use Find my iPhone with friends so you can keep up to date of where they are should you need to.

3. Epilepsy Awareness:

I’ve been starting to plan a campaign for Epilepsy Awareness. As an Epileptic, I hear a lot that people don’t know what Epilepsy is, but soon enough you’ll be educated with my awareness campaign! I plan to have lot’s going on and get as many people involved as possible. If you’d like to get yourself or your society involved, reach out to my email erin.cook@bnu.ac.uk

A small reminder that in my manifesto, you voted for me to work on/with Mental Health, Support Services and Student Safety. I am still working closely with the Mental Health Provision and support services.

Hello and what’s going on?

Whether you are starting your university journey or joining us for another year, welcome!

It’s been great meeting and chatting to you across all our campuses, at different events or even when helping you move in or if you’ve returned from your placement blocks and ready to get stuck in for another term, we’ve got lots to tell you!

Thank you for the opportunity to hear from you about what you’re excited for, and what you want support with. It has been a truly rewarding experience and I hope the work myself and fellow officers do can support you and continue making life better for students at Bucks

Vice President President Education and Welfare (Uxbridge and Aylesbury)

@buckssuvpew_au

If you want to see what I have been up to since July, check out the monthly updates on the website. Here you can find details of the projects I have been working on, what areas I have been addressing and how I continue work on my manifesto. I do post this on my social media as well.

Bucks VPEW UxAyls

But, in a quick snapshot I have been working on the provision for commuter students, the accessibility of rooms, a full activities calendar for the year at our Uxbridge and Aylesbury sites, Rusty’s Retreat (the community garden), World Mental Health Day activities, wellbeing awareness days event planning, having discussions with academics to support the student academic experience and much much more! If there is anything you ever want to get involved in, or want to suggest something for us to do, get in touch. We can look into this!

This is a short and sweet welcome, but make sure to check out the website and socials to see what is happening and you have any questions about the role and what we do, please make sure to ask, we are you elected officers.

Welcome to Rusty’s Retreat!

Rusty’s Retreat is our brand-new community garden, located outside the North Wing entrance (from car park C), from the back of the Winter Garden.

90% of you said that the University needs more biodiversity and so Rusty’s Retreat will welcome vegetables, pollinator plants (to encourage those bees), homes for the bugs so they’re not always eating our veg and add some much-needed greenery to the concrete jungle of the High Wycombe campus.

Inspired from visits to working gardens, conversations, desire to teach skills, and add to the campus biodiversity (did you know, the UK has lost almost half of its biodiversity), Rusty’s Retreat is a project and space of many opportunities. Whether that is learning how to sow, plant and grow crops, which plants are best, or how much watering a particular plant needs, you can also use this space to take time away from your studies by volunteering or making use of the seating.

This garden is aimed at welcoming our vast array of members. No matter if you’re an experienced green thumb or never had a house plant before, this space is for you. You’ll be able to see the growth of these plants and even use the viable crops in your own kitchen or donate them to our other cost-of-living support initiatives. We’re looking to grow your meal favourite like potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, chillies, and a variety of herbs to help spice up your meals! Have you got a crop favourite you’d like to have a hand growing?

We hope you can find a moment or two, to spend at Rusty’s Retreat, whether that is getting stuck in sowing, digging, painting, building, planting, or watering, or even sitting in our seating area to admire the work. Did you know spending as little as 10 minutes outside surrounded by nature can help to boost your mood, provide a sense of clarity and develop a sense of connection.

If you want to get involved at any time with the garden, please email volunteering@bnu.ac.uk or head to our office to find out more.

The Big Deal: International programme is only one part of a wide range of activity, support, entertainment and development available to students once they enrol with BNU and become a member of Bucks Students’ Union – for the full list of opportunities visit bucksstudentsunion.org

How the International Big Deal supports you!

Starting university in a new country can be both exciting and overwhelming, but Bucks Students’ Union’s International Big Deal initiative is helping international students feel right at home.

The International Big Deal, part of the SU’s wider Big Deal programme, provides free events, trips, and social activities designed to help students from around the world settle into life at Bucks. From welcome mixers and cultural food nights to day trips exploring local landmarks, the initiative encourages students to make new friends and experience cultures across the globe in a fun, supportive environment. Many international students have praised the scheme for easing the transition to university life. “It’s been amazing to meet people from different countries and feel included from day one,” said one student. “The events helped me feel confident and part of the community.”

The goal of the International Big Deal is to ensure that every student, no matter where they come from, feels valued and connected. With its continued success, the International Big Deal is proving to be a key part of making Bucks New University a truly global and welcoming campus.

Have your Say! Your Voice, but louder!

It’s time to make your voice heard! Voting is now open to decide who will represent you and your fellow students over the next year.

There are two key positions up for election: Student Reps and Union Council Chair

These are student-held, student-led, and student-focused roles, and exist to help make sure your voice is heard at all levels!

Student Reps are the foundation of student representation. These students help to gather feedback from their peers and work with university staff and the Students’ Union to make positive changes.

Whether it’s improving your course experience or celebrating what’s going well, your Student Reps make sure your experiences are heard and acted upon.

Union Council is the highest decisionmaking body within Bucks Students’ Union.

It represents the collective voice of all students, meeting monthly to discuss important issues, hold elected officers to account, and influence the direction of the Union.

The Union Council Chair leads these discussions, helping steer both the Council and the Union towards better outcomes for every student.

But why vote?

Electing these positions ensures that what we do as a union, truly is in the best interest of the students, and that its their voice that is being listened to. This is also your first step in actively contributing to your university community and getting involved in having your say about your student experience. Voting is open from Monday 20 October to Friday 24 October.

Make sure to cast your vote and help shape the student experience at BNU.

If voting has closed and your course doesn’t currently have a Student Rep, don’t worry — you can still get involved!

Just email surepresentation@bnu.ac.uk to find out how.

My Freshers’ Week Experience!

When I first stepped onto BNU soil as a fully-fledged undergrad, I was unsure what to expect. Freshers’ Week turned out to be the week of many days (and nights) to remember.

Though the introductory lectures were important and informative as they were (as seen), I really got stuck into everything ‘The Big Deal’ has to offer.

Some highlights included the Oktoberfest, - lots of singing and dancing - as well as Freshers’ Fair, seeing so many societies I can join.

It clearly worked, as I was successfully roped into writing this piece…

Throwing (some) caution to the wind, I look forward to the experiences of the year to come.

Last year our students volunteered over 17,500 hours in the community, running clubs and societies and through our internal Students’ Union projects! Our students also managed to raise an amazing £16400 last year for RAG. Volunteering at University can be so beneficial for you and can easily coincide with your studies.

Volunteering can be anything from being on committee for a club or society, to giving back to the community either by helping with a river clean or helping with Horses Trust. It can be anything in which you give up your own time to give back to something or someone else.

Here at Bucks Students’ Union we are always encouraging students to volunteer as there are so many great benefits that you gain. Volunteering looks great on your CV and provides you with many experiences and skills which will be great for your time beyond university.

Volunteering can be extremely rewarding and enjoyable and it is also a chance to meet like-minded people and make new friends. Volunteering opportunities are varied and there is definitely something for everyone, from six-month internships to one-off volunteering opportunities like selling poppies for the British Legion. There is always an opportunity to get involved which we can make fit around everyone’s busy university schedule and individual passions.

There are so many volunteering opportunities in place for the year, if you want to see what we are offering visit the Bucks Students’ Union website and visit the volunteering portal where all the opportunities are kept. Students who volunteer their time get rewarded by being awarded with certificates based on the hours they have put in.

The hours are:

If you reach your platinum volunteering award, you will be invited to our annual Union Awards dinner evening to be presented with your certificate.

This academic year we are continuing our volunteering bundles! If you reach 30 community hours, you will be able to collect your very own volunteering kit which includes a T-shirt, hoodie, backpack, portable charger and more!

We want you to be kitted out in volunteering stash ready for any opportunity you may want to get involved with. There are only 50 bundles available, so be quick and get logging those hours.

WHY SHOULD I VOLUNTEER?

A big HELLO

to all new and returning Buckinghamshire New University students and staff!

We’ve had an amazing start to the year already — from opening Rusty’s Retreat to celebrating Freshers’ Fortnight. I’m really looking forward to getting started with all the exciting campaigns and events we have planned for the year ahead.

I’m also eager to work with all our sports teams and societies on their green initiatives — I know there are some brilliant ideas in the works!

Make sure to follow us on Instagram @bucksgreenambassador to stay up to date with everything “Green” — including updates, events, and our day-today activities.

If you have any questions or are keen to get involved, feel free to drop us a message on Instagram or email volunteering@bnu.ac.uk.

GREEN AMBASSADOR UPDATE

Bethany’s September update on Rusty’s Retreat:

Have you heard about the community garden? “Rusty’s Retreat” is reaching even taller heights. We officially opened the garden on Thursday 25th September welcoming members from BSU trustee board, student leaders, staff and BNU’s senior management, to take part and see what we have been up to during the summer months. Thank you to the students and staff who volunteered their time helping with the construction of garden, whether that was building furniture, filling planters, or planting our crops, thank you for the time and attention you gave to the space, and we hope to you using the space more often. There is still much to get involved with, like more planting and the upkeep – the plants need a hydrating hero, we also need to do some painting in this space too. So, if you are interested in making your mark, or just wanted to get stuck in with the garden itself, get in touch with volunteering@bnu.ac.uk or bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk to learn how.

Saving Money and Making Life Better For YOU at Bucks!

The Big Deal is something both we and our students absolutely love!

It’s what allows them to enjoy everything we offer, completely FREE

We recently looked into just how much a student can save through The Big Deal compared to attending another university, and the results were incredible.

Take Marissa, for example, a highly active member of the Students’ Union who saved an estimated £2,090 thanks to The Big Deal!

She made the most of our free co-curricular activities, which not only gave her amazing experiences but also helped her develop valuable skills that boosted her employability after graduation.

At Bucks, we’re proud to provide opportunities that are not just fun and engaging, but that genuinely help students grow personally and professionally.

During her time here, Marissa threw herself into every opportunity available, from being a Student Development Ambassador, Fresher Helper and Student Rep, to joining sports teams and societies, attending first aid training, and becoming Chair of Musical Theatre and AU Council. She even joined the Leadership Academy and won a Union Award in 2024!

Marissa’s journey shows exactly what The Big Deal is all about — making the most of university life, developing new skills, and preparing for a successful future, all without spending a penny extra.

There is so much you can do with the Students Union, and it is all FREE! If there is something you are interested in doing or taking part in, please email: sutraining@bnu.ac.uk

FRESHERS’ HELPERS 2025 RECAP

My Freshers’ Helper experience

This was my second year as a Freshers’ Helper — this time as a Head Helper, which gave me more responsibility, making sure all new and returning helpers were comfortable and safe. Being a Freshers’ Helper is an incredible opportunity to take on at the start of the academic year, with plenty of chances to get involved throughout.

During training, you learn everything you need to know — from accommodation and welfare checks to helping out on nights at the Venue (and, of course, staying warm by the toaster while giving out toast!).

Throughout the first two weeks of Freshers’, there have been loads of opportunities to help out. We’ve had the Help Desk open all day, every day, supporting students with finding classes or answering general questions.

We also ran campus tours, supported the Bucks New Usage fair, and even more! You may have also seen me covering the Students’ Union reception desk from time to time.

If you’re thinking about applying to be a Freshers’ Helper next year — do it! The team is so lovely and welcoming, and I guarantee you’ll have a great time while doing it.

“It’s the best way to meet new people, give back, and make a real difference during Freshers!”

BNU ISOC x One Ummah | Week of Change 2025

This year, we are honoured to partner with One Ummah, a UK-based charity founded in Middlesbrough with a 100% donation policy, for our Week of Change 2025 campaign!

About the Week of Change

The Week of Change is an initiative by One Ummah that inspires universities and institutions across the UK to host events dedicated to supporting those in need.

It’s about more than just fundraising, it’s about uniting communities, raising awareness, and creating lasting impact.

“Charity is more than giving, it is planting seeds of change that multiply across generations.”

Through this campaign, we aim to empower families, uplift communities, and bring hope in times of crisis.

Theme: ‘Ilm — Education

Education lies at the heart of this year’s campaign. It was the first command revealed in the Qur’an:

“Read in the name of your Lord who created…” (Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:1)

Education represents dignity, empowerment, and the most sustainable way to break cycles of poverty. It gives individuals the tools to change their futures and contribute meaningfully to society.

Sustainability and Impact

One Ummah’s mission goes beyond temporary aid, it’s about sustainable change. From Gaza to Pakistan, Afghanistan to Yemen, and beyond, communities face immense hardship due to conflict and crisis. This year, our education-focused projects will:

Keep children in school with meals, uniforms, books, and resources

Support teachers and imams through sponsorships and training

Build masjids as centres for learning, worship, and community life

Deliver holistic education across Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Africa By supporting these efforts, we’re helping to restore hope, dignity, and opportunity to those who need it most.

Smashing start to the season for Badminton

The BNU Badminton team has kicked off the new academic year in style, welcoming an incredible wave of new players with over 100 sign ups from Freshers Fair!

From first-years picking up a racket for the very first time to returning players ready to compete, the courts were buzzing with energy. The mix of fun, friendly competition, and relaxed fun sessions set the tone for what’s shaping up to be an exciting season ahead.

We held our trials for the competitive team and are getting ready for our first match of the season away at Hertfordshire. We also welcomed the new Women’s team for the first time in many years and it was great to see so many women signing up for the new team. Both teams are ready to go and looking forward to what looks like is going to be a great year for BNU badminton!

If you missed the first session, don’t worry — new players are still more than welcome to join in. Come along, get involved, and see what all the excitement’s about.

Fresher’s Week Over and Out

‘On the first day of hockey training, I was filled with anxiety as I didn’t have a clue how to play and as a first-year student I didn’t know anyone yet, but that’s where I felt the team strength as the girls were welcoming and the coaches took their time to show the beginners the basics.

Not once was I overlooked or told I was not good enough. Since joining I have been encouraged and have befriended my whole team feeling empowered after the sessions.’

‘This is my second year on Women’s Hockey, this year with the opportunity of being part of committee which has been incredible so far. Each training session has been very insightful and has broadened the aspects of being part of the team and each role.

As a collective we share how we can ensure everyone has the best and safest time and is able to succeed and excel! Meeting the freshers has been so lovely and exciting whether they’re joining our sporty family or are a social member. Getting to know each and every one of them has been an incredible time and I hope that continues’

‘So far our training sessions have been fun, challenging and rewarding. Each session I learn more and more, and we strengthen our relationships with one another on the pitch as well as off.

This is my third year as part of Women’s Hockey, and I have always felt included and welcomed so meeting the new freshers and giving them the same experience has been lovely and warming. We can’t wait to meet more members to join our club’
