The earthquake off Kamchatka Peninsula was an 8.8 Richter monster, the most powerful in 14 years. The ripple effect several hours later on Crescent City and the West Coast was relatively tame; nonetheless, all precautions were taken by law enforcement, Office of Emergency Services, the Coast Guard and other supporting agencies.
According to Harbormaster Mike Rademacker, at approximately 2:40AM, Wednesday, the Crescent City Harbor sustained significant tsunami-related damage, primarily affecting “H” Dock. A surge of water several feet in height caused the decking of the dock to lift along its piling but as water levels continued to rise, the structure was unable to adjust. The decking became lodged on the pilings and was eventually submerged, resulting in major

structural failure and a complete separation of the dock.
No injuries or deaths were reported.
All vessel movements, both arrivals and departures are suspended by the harbormaster until further notice, in order to prevent personal injury and protect harbor infrastructure. Power and water service have been shut off, except to power for emergency pumps, as wave surges are on going.
In anticipation of the impending tsunami, many vessels exited the harbor to ensure safety to their crafts. The Coast Guard denied re-access to the harbor, pending an all clear announcement from the Coast Guard.
Yesterday’s Tsunami follows the catastrophic damage in 2011, the inner boat basin was completely reconstructed to be tsunami- resistant. Damage assessments are still underway.
A Bird in the Hand
Is Worth MORE than Two in the Bush
BY ROGER GITLIN

McGraw Development, applicant for the refurbishment of the run down harbor RV parks, states it has invested $10’s of thousands in time, research and consultants and hopes to plan a complete makeover of the decrepit RV Parks in the Harbor.
For the last 10 months, Sean McGraw and Dr. Scott Lawhon have dotted every i, crossed every t, traveled up from Orange County to attend Crescent City Harbor meetings, many on extremely short notice, to meet with commissioners, City and County elected to earn the lease to mitigate both eyesore properties.
Now, in the 11th hour, the Harbor Commission is considering accepting additional Requests for Proposals (RFP).
Both attorneys, Ryan Plotz for the Harbor and Thomas Gruenbeck for the applicant concur there is no need for an RFP. It is not a requirement to award the contract.
Mike Bahr of CSS Community Solutions, grant seekers, disagrees. He and developer Steve Opps are hoping commissioners will entertain an RFP for three projects: a
boat operations yard (to replace the Fashion Blacksmith boatyard); About a dozen vacant land parcels; and the RV Park. Fully, the summer is half over yet, nothing has developed. The question must be asked, Have the commissioners dragged their feet and squandered the opportunity to begin the asphalting of the substandard roads in both parks?
Perhaps.
An exceptional proposal from the McGraw Group is being held up by
perhaps a greed level for more development by the Opps group?
It begs the question, Is a Bird in the Hand worth MORE than two in the bush?
More importantly, the delay of repairs on both RV parks, opens options for the current applicant who is and has been poised to get to work.
The Harbor meets August 13 at its Office at 2PM to discuss the delay issue.
Great White Attacks Kayaker Off Klamath Beach

Cody Gardner of Smith River does what he so dearly loves to do in his spare time…he kayaks.
Last Monday, Cody was kayaking at the Wilson Road Rocks, near Klamath about 200 feet away from
the beach when a Great White shark appeared behind the rocks and took a bite out of his kayak. Cody estimates the shark was about 14ft. Sharks are rare along the North Coast. There’s been only one attack in the last 25 years along the North Coast. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife is investigating the incident.
Sharkologist Ralph Collier of Sharkweekly is also investigating the incident and promises to report details to The Triplicate.
Bathers and kayakers, be vigilant as you enjoy our beautiful beachs. Though very rare, sharks do frequent North Coast waters.
Harbor Update: Review of Meeting Minutes Detours Harbor Business
BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
Meetings management continue to fester and interfere with Crescent City Harbor business. The latest interruption delayed commissioners from addressing more heady agendized subjects due to the arduous review of meeting agenda minutes for the last six months. Commissioners are mandated to review any meeting in which a commissioner did not attend. Commissioner Dan Schmidt did not understand that obligation and chose to exclude himself from any vote in which he was not physically present.
The 2PM meeting time, last Wednesday was finally completed to well past 5PM.
A very few members of the audience in what only be described as a painful delay of conducting harbor business and ego indulgence, were stage center for perpetuating the long meeting.
Those individuals will remain anonymous. Here are some of those abrogating outbursts:
One individual continued to yell out, “Point of Order, Point of Order!” The Rosenberg Rules are clear. Any point of order or information may be used by elected commission members ONLY. Rules preclude any audience member from shouting out and engaging in argument, in this case, engaging in argument with Harbor Chairman Gerhard Weber.
Per rules, the public is allowed three minutes per agendized item on the subject on hand. The disruptive audience members used this item to bash the harbormaster, an obvious attempt to sway off subject. One individual spoke about the purchase of an iPad, which squandered precious time to an already gruelinglylong meeting.
No one was removed from the meeting, the gavel was quiet.
The Meeting Minutes snafu was initiated by Commissioner Dan Schmidt, who wished to change his comment from a previous January meeting. Then, the decision to discuss all previous meetings to present was proffered. A full hour of discussion, three minutes for each audience member was included. Alas, Commissioner John Evans ended the tortuous ordeal and the Commission ended the discussion on meeting meetings.
In other business, Ocean Gold employee Eric Neff delivered encouraging news the ice plant will soon be operational. The insulation crew has just completed its major work. Remaining tasks to open the ice plant are few, and expedient opening is anticipated.
Justin Hanks, Harbor Commission Security delivered a glowing report on the 4th of July harbor event.
The Harbor Commission next meets Wednesday August 13, 2PM at its Citizens Dock office.

SERVING DEL NORTE COUNTY SINCE 1879
Guest Commentary - Opinion by Samuel Strait
The Consolation Prize and the Traveling Man Go to Philly and Lay an
In the inimitable dialog of modern TV advertising, I must ask returning Supervisors Valerie, the “consolation prize” Starkey and the traveling man Chris Howard, “where’s the beef?”
I could have told you before Supervisors Starkey and Howard departed for their eastern venture to National Association of Counties (NACo) in the city of brotherly love, reporting to the public at the July 22nd Board of Supervisor’s meeting, would reveal the abject waste of taxpayer funds by the two, Starkey and Howard, attending the NACo conference. Perhaps a little refresher is in order. NACo is a national lobbying organization for counties to effect policy change at the federal level for the benefit of their respective county’s citizens. Del Norte County elected to join said organization in the spring of 2024. In the first year, Supervisor Starkey was the County’s chosen representative and was treat-
ed with an all expenses paid by the county’s residents to a luxury junket to Florida. What a deal! In return, the county’s residents received no August 2024 report from Supervisor Starkey at a Board of Supervisor’s meeting, claiming in a gushing word salad just how wonderful and valuable the information she was bringing back to the County’s residents was. We are still waiting for what exactly the “valuable” information Starkey was to have returned with one year later. Way to go, Consolation Prize. Just to be clear. Del Norte County has a long-standing agreement specifically with Mr. Greg Burns of Thorn Run Partners to lobby on behalf of the County in Washington DC. Suddenly, in 2024 it is discovered by the current Board of Supervisors there is a critical need to fund a national lobbying effort for the County. The County’s 2024 theory must have been in spite of having a
personal lobbyist at the federal level, it can’t help but be a positive for the County to spend additional tax dollars to participate in an organization which proports to represent 3,143 counties throughout the United States for additional lobbying in the NACo organization. Over 2700 counties attended. Del Norte was one of the attending counties. Naturally, the County’s Board never considered the fact may have said 3,143 counties might not be exactly rural, have the same concerns, and the idea Del Norte County population of 25,000 plus a few might not get the same kind of bang for its dollars expended than say a suburb county of Chicago. Far be it for me to point it out, but we will probably never know judging by the reporting from our illustrious representatives to the conferences, what the return was, or even will be.
So, after the first rather ignominious attempt by the County to gain
Egg
some return for the money expended sending the “consolation prize” Starkey to NACo’s Florida event in 2024 for the yet to be discovered return on her luxury vacation, the County’s “brain trust” voted 5-0 to send TWO representatives to the 2025 gala event. Got money to burn after all, in the County’s travel fund. Apparently, one vacationing Supervisor at the event couldn’t cover all “important” factoids to be gleaned from various meetings at the conference. Of course, neither does the public know about those valuable and important factoids either. After consecutive word salads by Starkey and Howard reporting out about their attendance at NACo in the July 22,2025 meeting of the Board, will we be waiting for another year to learn why it was absolutely imperative to send the two to return with what?
It seems like it never fails to occur to our representatives or the Coun-
Del Norte Ambulance
ty’s employees who go swanning around California, the nation, or even further afield on the taxpayer’s dime to ask the question, “Was this trip really necessary?” I suspect in many cases, the answer is “NOT REALLY!”
Clearly, the reporting by Supervisors Starkey and Howard left much to be desired. A few public comments were more than necessary after both reported their activities at NACo. Maybe some by specifics to discover why they were both there?
Something which should have happened and did not. When the County’s supervisors spend significant sums of tax dollars on vague reports of gain to the County’s residents, the public deserves to know what those gains are. This has not happened! The “BEEF” remains a mystery! Yes, the Del Norte duo and its tepid report(s) lay an egg.
Klamath Station Planning Priorities
As Del Norte Ambulance prepares for the operational launch of Station 3 in Klamath, several key planning priorities have been outlined to ensure a smooth and efficient start. A major focus is continued coordination with the Yurok Housing Authority to support both facility readiness and long-term sustainability. This partnership is essential to aligning services with community needs and maintaining a strong foundation for future operations.
Developing clear and customized Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) is another critical step. These protocols will define operational workflows specific to Station 3 and the unique demands of serving the Klamath community, providing structure and consistency for responding crews.
The advanced life support ambulance assigned to the Klamath area is part of the overall EMS system and will be deployed to calls outside the area when required. In such instances, a unit from Crescent City will respond to the Klam-
ath area as needed, similar to how the system provides service currently. Enhanced dispatch coordination is also a priority. Ongoing collaboration with Bay City Ambulance Communications (BCA) and the Del Norte Sheriff’s Office Dispatch (DNSO) will refine dispatching procedures for improved efficiency and seamless
service integration.
To support clinical documentation and administrative operations, IT specialists from MetroWest Ambulance will install secure infrastructure, including internet connectivity, computers, and necessary software systems. This step ensures that the station is technologically equipped from the outset.
Engagement with ambulance crews will be emphasized through open lines of communication. Field staff will have opportunities to share feedback on daily operations, discuss challenges, and contribute insights into best practices for achieving high standards of patient care. In preparation for fulltime occupation, Station 3
will be furnished with all essential items. Comfortable and functional furniture and supplies will create a safe and supportive environment for both living and working.
Reliable communications systems, including phone, internet, and radio service, will be established to ensure all channels are fully operational and
dependable under all conditions. Finally, once all preparations are complete, Station 3 will be officially occupied and will begin full emergency response operations, marking a significant milestone in improving ambulance service coverage for the Klamath area.
Orchid Marketing Company & the Crescent City Harbor District – Aiming for Growth and Looking at Opportunities
by arielle de GarCia
Orchid Marketing
When I founded Orchid Marketing Company in 2020, I had a vision rooted in community, creativity, and growth. My goal was to give professional services to those in need – with a focus on our small local businesses. Now, I am lucky enough to work side-by-side with one of our most important local assets: the Crescent City Harbor District.
I’ve been a Crescent City resident since 2012, and I bring more than just marketing expertise to the table.
I’m a parent, the Secretary at the Crescent City Del Norte Chamber of Commerce, and an active participant in local community events. With degrees in graphic design, science marketing, and the fine arts, I have helped shape brand identities and growth strategies for small businesses, tribal enterprises, and casinos. My unique blend of skills and experience is now focused on helping the Crescent City Harbor District grow its presence and realize its full potential. My partnership with the Harbor District began in 2024 with small-scale marketing tasks. But like any successful collaboration, it grew with mutual trust and a shared vision. Recently, I was personally invited to present to the Harbor Board of Commissioners, and the public in attendance, to showcase
the measurable growth the Harbor has seen in its digital footprint under my guidance.
In one year, the Crescent City Harbor District’s Facebook page had a 12.9% increase in followers. I’ve also been successful in regaining access to their Google My Business profile, as well as the profile for Redwood Harbor Village.
The significance of maintaining a strong digital footprint in today’s marketing landscape is immense. While it represents just one element of a comprehensive, coordinated strategy, it serves as a crucial foundation— and keeping your online information current is essential to supporting the broader marketing vision. One of my ongoing efforts
includes revamping the Crescent City Harbor website — not just for a visual overhaul, but to make it more user-friendly. The goal is to attract potential investors, support current businesses, and make it easier for tourists to find everything they need when visiting. By presenting the Harbor in a more professional and visually appealing manner, the Harbor District hopes to boost tourism, attract development, and encourage new business ventures.
Among the most promising areas for improvement are the Harbor’s RV parks. With the implementation of NewBook as the new booking platform for both Redwood Harbor Village and Bayside RV Park, I have been instrumental in
Correction (Aug. 6, 2025): An article published on July 30, 2025 titled ‘Crescent City Council Renews Two Local Marijuana Dispensary Operations’, misstated the actions of the City Council regarding approval of cannabis dispensaries, North Coast Herbal Solutions and Sea Green Collective.. optimizing the visitor experience by reviewing guest feedback, researching industry trends, and identifying areas where the parks could easily excel. By suggesting practical upgrades — we were able to implement a few before the crucial Fourth of July holiday, which resulted in Redwood Harbor Village fully booked, with dry camping overflow. The website usability for booking at the parks was a large focus in this process, improving the user experience. This collaboration with the Harbor District isn’t just about digital transformation — it’s about a shared vision for the future. The Harbor District, under the leadership of Harbormaster Mike Rademaker and a committed board, is actively engaged in conversations with investors interested in revitalizing the area while preserving its charm and utility. They envision a vibrant harbor with clean, safe facilities, modernized docks, and a thriving commercial and recreational fishing industry — especially for Dungeness crab, one of the region’s standout commodities. My job is to be readily available for all projects coming my way, whether they involve consulting, branding, graphic design, digital/traditional marketing, and so much more.
I’m also here to help bring light to opportunities and give solutions for improvement.
From photos of South Beach and its diverse wildlife, to highlighting Harbor spaces available for development, one of my goals is to ensure that any potential investor or visitor who searches for the Crescent City Harbor District online finds a professional, inviting, and inspiring destination. My passion as a Crescent City resident resonates through my work. Through “social listening” — monitoring how people engage and converse digitally — and maintaining open communication channels, I’m confident that attention and interest in the Crescent City Harbor will continue to grow, whether it be from locals or tourists alike. This is about creating momentum that benefits not just the Crescent City Harbor itself, but the businesses located on the Harbor, and our entire community. If you are looking to start a business, or have an existing business that may need my services, you can reach me at (707) 572-5289, by emailing orchidmarketingco@gmail. com, or by my website –www.orchidmarketingco.com.

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, cither of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:
The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site wwvv.auction.com - for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case: TS#181941. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not
immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer/’ you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (800) 280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale, or visit the internet website www.auction.com or auction.com/sb1079 for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case TS#181941 to find die date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after die trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale.
