JULIA CASSELS

The eyes never forget what the heart has seen. African proverb
Having lived in Zambia and Tanzania for several years, a part of my heart has always remained in Africa. The chance to return – this time to Kenya as Artist in Residence with The Safari Series to the beautiful Lolldaiga Conservancy in Laikipia – was unbelievably exciting.
Lolldaiga Conservancy is utterly magical, cradled among folding hills and situated just northwest of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares. Its breathtaking landscapes of cedar forests, open savannah, rolling grasslands, riverine glades, and lakes – not to mention its wonderfully rich wildlife – are an artist’s dream. It was also my home for the first three months of the year.

This exhibition, Kenya & Beyond, is the culmination of my time at Lolldaiga and later along Kenya’s coast. Sketches, studies, and memories have been translated into paintings. I am deeply grateful to Moon and Ed Hough, owners of The Safari Series, for their incredible generosity and for offering me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I only hope I have done it justice.

Julia’s real artistic journey began in Kenya. In her early 20s, she left behind a career in advertising and PR to work with the Maasai in the heart of Kenya’s Rift Valley. Immersed in the rhythms, colours and light of Africa, she found lasting inspiration – not only in the wildlife and people, but the landscape too. These experiences continue to form the foundation of her work.
Julia later went on to spend time in Zambia’s Luangwa National Park, where she honed her skills of observation – essential to capturing the spirit of the natural world – and it was here that she developed her lightness of touch that now characterises her distinctive style, in both watercolours and oil.
‘I am never more at home than painting en plein air in the African Bush – sketchbook in hand, the landscape in front of me, working freely, capturing the moment with swift fluid strokes of pencil and brush.’
Now based in Hampshire, England, Julia paints from her studio at home. She runs art courses and workshops and leads painting holidays both in the UK and abroad.
Julia’s work is held in collections worldwide, and in 2025 she was awarded The Elizabeth Hosking Watercolour Award at the prestigious David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year.
This is Julia’s fifth solo show with Cricket Fine Art.
