BOERNE VISITOR GUIDE - Fall-Winter 2025

Page 1

“I visited Joshua Creek for a corporate event. We hunted behind dogs the first afternoon and had a great experience. The guide was knowledgeable, knew his dogs well and was enjoyable to be around. The second day we did a driven hunt and had a great time as well. Overall, this place was beautiful, the staff were professional, and the hunts were exceptional. Lodge, food, and bar were also wonderful.”

THE GATEWAY

Boerne is both literally and figuratively an entryway into one of Texas’ most beautiful regions: The Hill Country.

While just a couple of decades or so ago, Boerne (pronounced Bur-nee) easily could have been considered hidden. Today, it is a town where technology and glories of yesteryear see equal balance.

Boerne is recognized across the United States as a desirable place to live. Listed by the U.S. Census Bureau as one of the country’s fastest-growing regions, the area’s rapid expansion has meant numerous new housing subdivisions as well as an influx of industry,

business and tourism.

Boerne strives to hold on to its warm, small-town origins. Oak trees still grow together in canopies above many city streets, tree-lined roads pass by historic and new homes and a trip to the grocery store or your favorite watering hole almost guarantees an encounter with friends and neighbors.

Whether it’s shopping, visiting the area’s beautiful caves, exploring the local nature center, enjoying historically authentic exhibits, birding, cycling, hunting or hiking, Boerne provides the ideal blend of the urban and the rural.

Geneva is a welcoming, tight-knit community of people who trust and invest in each other with grace and grit.

The school began offering classes in 1999 to 13 students in kindergarten, first and third grade. The first senior class of 19 students graduated in May 2011. Today, Geneva serves about 700 students in grades K-12.

Boerne’s history DEEP ROOTS has HHH

Boerne, the county seat of Kendall County, is situated about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio in the beautiful Hill Country.

In the 1850s, thousands of German-speaking immigrants flocked to Texas seeking land, and economic opportunity. Among them were a group of idealistic, university educated, young men who were fired with the dream of establishing ideal, model communities.

They called themselves the Vierzigers (“the Forty”). They were also known as the Darmstädters, for their Germanic roots. Their socialistic communities soon failed and scattered, but a few Darmstädters camped along Cibolo Creek, near present-day Boerne and established a short-lived communal farm. Gustav Theissen purchased land from one of the Forty. He and surveyor John James platted the land in 1852 and began selling town lots. They named the town Boerne in honor of Karl Ludwig Börne (Boerne), a well-known German writer, arts critic, publicist and later, ardent advocate of political freedom, who died in Paris, France, in 1837.

August Staffel was named postmaster in 1856. Boerne was still a dangerous frontier community and subject to Native American raids. Although sparsely settled (it had only ten houses by1859), it was chosen to be the county seat when the county was formed in 1862.

The new county was named after its most famous resident, internationally known author, writer and sheep farmer George Wilkins Kendall.

Most Germans opposed slavery. At the start of the Civil War, the vote to secede from the Union did not pass in Boerne. Continued resistance to the draft caused the Confederate government to briefly declare martial law in Kendall County.

In the 1880s tourists were drawn to Boerne due to its sparkling streams, fresh air and moderate climate. Several health resorts were established in Boerne. By 1884 the town had five hotels and had grown to 250 residents.

While tourism was important, Boerne was still an agricultural community based on farming and ranching. Shingles and

fence posts, made from the cedars that lined the streams, were also important products as were other timber products and building stone.

The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway arrived in 1887 and brought increased economic opportunity. The population of Boerne rose to 800 by 1900.

Boerne incorporated in 1909 and established a mayor-alderman form of city government. The Boerne Independent School District was established that year.

Two youngsters look out from the “Bexar Jail,” guarded by two gunslingers, during a photo shoot at the Kendall County Fair, a ritual kicking off the fall tourist season every Labor Day.

The population reached 950 by 1914, and the community prospered through the 1920s. The Great Depression of the 1930s put an end to the tourism and cotton farming that had been staples of the local economy. The population fell from 2,000 in 1928 to 1,117 in 1931 and was slow to recover.

By the 1940s, it had only risen a few percent. In the 1950s, however, many residents turned to nearby San Antonio for employment, and Boerne’s population was back on the rise. The population grew at a slow but steady rate, reaching 2,169 in 1960.

The construction of the San Antonio Medical Center and the University of Texas at San Antonio in neighboring Bexar

County, as well as the completion of Interstate 10, had an impact on Boerne in the 1960s. Boerne became an attractive town for commuters and its population continued to climb: 2,400 in 1970; 3,254 in 1980; and 4,274 in 1990.

In 1995 the population exceeded 5,000, making Boerne eligible for home-rule, which was approved. Growth accelerated and the population grew to more than 10,000 by the 2010 census and to more than 19,000 by the 2020 census. In 2024 the population reached 23,000. Meanwhile, Kendall County grew from 33,384 in 2010 to 52,000 in 2024.

Boerne today is a bustling city dealing with the issues of rapid growth, but it still retains that growth due to its attractive nature and outstanding educational facilities.

Boerne also holds on to its German heritage despite the influx of different ethnic groups. More than 20% of Boerne’s population claimed German heritage in 2020. The Boerne Gesangverein (singing society) which was established in 1860, remained an important social and recreational organization until 1977. The Boerne Schuetzen Verein (shooting club), formed in 1864, and the Boerne Village Band, formed in 1860, are still active. The Boerne Village Band is the oldest German Band in America.

HIDDEN GEMS IN TEXAS

Cave of wonders

The city of Boerne offers visitors so much ... but wait — there’s more! About 20 miles north of town, tucked away beneath the Texas landscape, lies a hidden world of wonder: a subterranean wonderland known as The Cave Without a Name.

This natural marvel, formed over millions of years by the flow of the Guadalupe River, has captivated visitors since its opening to the public in 1939.

Most caves throughout the USA are named after the person who discovered them or after some natural aspect of the cave. In 1940, Jim Horn, the owner of the land where the cave is, held a contest to name the cave. A young boy won the $50 prize ($675 in today’s money) with “The Cave Without a Name” because, as he said, “it was too beautiful to have a name.”

As you descend into the cave’s depths, you are greeted by a breathtaking spectacle of towering formations, shimmering pools and intricate stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is composed of several chambers, but the largest, by far, is the Queen’s Chamber. With its perfect acoustics and flat surface, it is the ideal place to conduct concerts.

Generally, there are 20-30 performances per year, ranging from opera to mariachi bands. In some shows, the lights are turned off and, after a minute or two of silence, the band begins to play as the lights are slowly turned back on.

Another of the cave’s features is the Guadalupe River, which flows through parts of the cave system. The water levels can vary depending on the time of year and rainfall, but typically, you can see parts of the flowing water during tours.

This location is not only a geological wonder but also a hub for scientific research and exploration. Hydrologists and archaeologists have conducted studies within the cave, shedding light on its formation and history.

Over the years, the cavern has undergone several changes and improvements, all with the aim of making it more accessi-

ble and enjoyable for visitors. The electrical system has been updated multiple times. During the COVID-19 pandemic, staff took the opportunity to concrete trails and improve the lighting.

There is a small gift shop on site offering gems, the chance to cut your own geode and light refreshments. Picnic tables are scattered throughout the area, so feel free to picnic there.

In 2022, a small campground with RV and tent camping slots opened.

Guided tours are available every hour on the hour. Experienced guides will lead you through the subterranean labyrinth, sharing fascinating stories and answering your questions.

So, pack your sense of wonder (and a sweater, since the year-round temperature is 66 degrees and embark on a journey into the depths of the cave. You won’t be disappointed.

Visitors receive a hearty Jim Horn welcome when they arrive.

Period clothing is a wonderful find along the Hill Country Mile, adding to the historical revelry of a Christmas long past.

Comfort in

COMFORT — Christmas in Comfort, one of the area’s most popular holiday events, will bring family fun, great shopping and the holiday spirit to the Texas Hill Country on Nov. 29, 2025, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Sponsored by the Comfort Chamber of Commerce, the event captures the spirit of the holidays with small town ambiance as merchants attract shoppers with festive holiday décor, Christmas music, and holiday lights. This marks the 39th year for the event.

The Chamber has asked first responders from Comfort, Center Point, Sisterdale, Waring, Kerrville, Ingram, Hunt and Bulverde to serve as grand marshals of the event’s popular Lighted Night Parade.

“We want to show our appreciation for these brave men and women who are the backbone of emergency services for our communities,” said Margaret Stone, Comfort Chamber board and events director. “We invite residents throughout the Hill Country to join us at the parade to express our gratitude for the service of our first responders.”

Christmas in Comfort begins at 10 a.m. with more than 100 arts and craft vendor booths on High Street opening from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Seventh Street from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be Food Courts on Seventh Street as well.

Christmas in Comfort offers lots of family fun. Kids can take photos with Santa at Santa’s Barn on Seventh Street. They also can participate in a petting zoo, face painting, gingerbread decorating and holiday crafts. The Comfort Library will hold its gently used book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Live music will be featured on three stages located within the downtown district starting at 10 a.m. and commencing at 7 p.m. when the parade kicks off.

Everyone gathers at Seventh and High streets for Christmas carols and the lighting of the beautifully decorated Comfort Community Christmas tree at 6 p.m.

Weinachten Lichter, the magical lighted night parade, begins at 7 p.m. A glittering fireworks display immediately after the parade concludes the event. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Fireworks will be set off at Altgelt, the local football practice field.
