BROADWAY IN CINCINNATI THE ARONOFF CENTER

Dear Friends,

On behalf of all of us at the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA), it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Aronoff Center and the thrilling new 25/26 First Financial Bank Broadway in Cincinnati season, presented by TriHealth.

This season, we joyfully celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Aronoff Center, which first opened its doors in October 1995. The Aronoff was built as a home for the arts in Cincinnati—a place where artists and audiences of all backgrounds can come together to explore, connect, and belong.

We are thrilled to host the acclaimed national tour of The Notebook, which recently opened in Cleveland. Based on the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks and the popular 2004 film, this beautiful stage version is a testament to the power of love and human resilience told through an evocative score, a talented cast, and inventive storytelling. Cleveland’s The Plain Dealer theater critic wrote: “The Notebook is why we go the theater: to get swept up, forget the world outside, and feel everything.” (HINT: get your tissues ready now!)

Looking ahead, we hope to see you over the holidays for the muchanticipated return engagement of Hamilton: An American Musical, celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. Don’t throw away your shot to experience this landmark hit show again or for the first time at the Aronoff from December 16 through January 4.

Thank you so much for joining us and for supporting the arts in Cincinnati. We are glad you’re here. If we can assist you in any way during your stay, please speak with one of our ushers or team members.

Enjoy the show!

IN INGRID MICHAELSON AND BEKAH BRUNSTETTER’S HANDS, THE NOTEBOOK ISN’T JUST ABOUT A MEMORY—IT BECOMES ONE

The first moment that composer-lyricist Ingrid Michaelson musicalized for The Notebook is when the character of Older Allie, who has dementia, remembers. “I felt like that was such a moment that sang, and so that’s where my brain went first,” Michaelson told Broadway News. Given the Notebook’s prominence in popular culture—be it the original bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks or the movie adaptation starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams—there are numerous places where one’s brain could go first. It could have been the first time Allie and Noah meet, or the moment when they see each other again after years of silence, or the iconic scene in the rain. But it is telling that Michaelson’s impulse fixated on memory.

The Notebook has always been about reflection. Speaking to an elderly woman with dementia, an old man reads the story of a love between two sweethearts, Allie and Noah. The beauty is: That old man is Noah and that old woman is Allie. In previous iterations, the emphasis is on the love story itself—not the reading of it. But Michaelson and book writer Bekah Brunstetter have chosen to balance their musical version by dividing the story into three stages of Noah and Allie’s lives (younger, middle and older) and dedicating significant attention to the older phase and what it means to deal with memory loss. In fact, Michaelson and Brunstetter, facilitated by directors Michael Greif and Schele Williams and choreographer Katie Spelman, endeavored to conjure the experience of memory onstage.

“I wanted the sound of the music and the songs to live in this space that they all could inhabit together and float out of time and space—if that makes sense,” said Michaelson. Indeed, her Notebook score plays more like a contiguous soundscape than individual songs. With that, Michaelson’s music and lyrics seemingly serve the dual purposes of what a musical score does (i.e., create character, move plot, expand emotional beats) and what a film score does (set mood, establish emotional tonality). And that ethereal quality which Michaelson described parallels memory itself.

In that vein, Michaelson dabbles with echoes of her own music and the musical themes embedded in her compositions. “We’re playing with memory here, so to have [elements] come back and fragments of other songs appear in other moments—that’s Older Allie’s journey. It was a conscious choice.”

That choice also reflects in Brunstetter’s script. Different from previous iterations of The Notebook, Brunstetter’s book skips ahead in the lovers’ story and later rewinds. “We liked the nonlinear part of the story, because that does, in some ways, mirror what Older Allie is going through,” Brunstetter said.

“The idea of taking these moments and sort of scrambling them up [felt like] how memory really works: different things hit you at different moments,” Michaelson added. “That also helps to put us all in the space that Older Allie might be sitting in, which is: trying to piece things together.”

Brunstetter’s book isn’t without structure and dramatic arc (“There is an order and a calm to it,” she said), but leaning into this nonlinear nature—this followable fragmentation—is what attracted Brunstetter to writing the musical in the first place. She heard three of Michaelson’s early songs and jumped on board. “It felt innately theatrical,” Brunstetter said of Michaelson’s take. “It didn’t feel [like] it would need to be a typical movie musical adaptation.”

That’s another key to the Notebook musical: It is not the film on a stage. The characters and their emotions are all there. But the words, like the structure, are new.

“If we just took iconic lines from the movie and put them in the musical, we would be limiting ourselves and not allowing it to be a piece of musical theater,” said Brunstetter.

Still, Brunstetter and Michaelson wanted to deliver an experience as soulful and affecting as its predecessors. “That’s been a constant balance for us,” Brunstetter continued. “We love the book. We love the movie. Giving the fans of the book and the movie enough to delight in that familiarity of, ‘Oh, there’s that moment I love,’ while also building upon it and expanding it [was key].”

Brunstetter and Michaelson’s Notebook is still a sweeping, epic romance—but the overarching idea of memory and its theatricalization allowed for the expansion they sought. “We really wanted to have people think about their life and the choices they’ve made, even more so than the love story,” said Michaelson. “How do you want to live your days, these precious days that we get? Obviously the romantic part of it is huge, but there’s also aging, loss, what happens after loss, legacy.”

In other words: What will you remember, and what will be worth remembering?

Michaelson and Brunstetter hope that’s what audiences will consider when they see The Notebook. “We hope that people connect, think of their family members, their own life choices, find themselves in it in some way, and then ultimately feel because they’re recognizing themselves and their life in the piece,” said Brunstetter. “I think that’s the goal.”

The choice for your cancer care is clear.

At The James, you’re choosing the experts who understand there is no such thing as routine cancer. Where your care is delivered by a highly specialized, compassionate team dedicated to studying and treating just one type of cancer — yours. And where more than 1,700 scientists are working on new treatments — and new hope — for every form of cancer. All at the region’s only comprehensive cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute.

#ChooseTheJames cancer.osu.edu/ChooseTheJames

The James is proud to be nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report for 27 years.
