For the Manheim Lions Club, this is a year of milestones. It marks both 100 years of the club and the Manheim Lions baseball team, and it celebrates 50 years of the Richard “Dick” Weidman Award, given to the player on the Manheim Lions baseball team with the highest batting average.
The Manheim Lions Club was chartered in 1925.
“For a century, we’ve lived the Lions motto ‘We Serve,’ focusing on vision and health initiatives, youth programs and hands-on community support,” said Aaron Henderson, president of the Manheim club. “Highlights include sponsoring the Manheim Lions baseball team, presenting annual education awards, sponsoring Cub Scout Pack 47, recognizing a Student of the Month at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, hosting the Easter egg hunt

Technically, films combine elements of images, motion, dialogue, ideas and music. It’s a combination of sensory stimuli that can evoke strong emotions and transport viewers to different places and times.
Ryan Shank, the founder of the Red Rose Film Festival, has been theatrically transported on many different occasions.
“(Films are) an escape,” said Shank. “I’ve always loved stories. I grew up on Ninja Turtles, and I also grew up on ‘Jaws.’ I love to laugh. It’s almost like therapy in a way. I’d rather listen to a story and relate to it than talk about myself.”
“This is our largest craft bazaar to date,” said Pam Hoffman, president of the Pleasant View Communities Auxiliary, describing the community’s annual event.
“Expect 80-plus talented vendors who have produced handcrafted items from art to woodworking,” she added, noting that vendors and customers have expressed their appreciation for the event.
The craft bazaar will take place
This year’s edition of Shank’s annual Red Rose Film Festival will be staged on four days, from Thursday, Nov. 6, to Sunday, Nov. 9. The festival will include screenings of 60 films - featurelength movies, documentaries and shorts - from 20 countries, as well as a pair of formal gatherings.
On Nov. 6, the event will kick off with a welcome party from 5 to 9 p.m. at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. Then, on Saturday, Nov. 8, the local film festival will present special awards at a gala from 6 to 10 p.m. at Penn Cinema IMAX, 541 Airport Road, Lititz.
“The welcome party is just that,” said Shank, a 2004 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School. “It’s a happy hour for
and Santa Run 5K/Walk, running the Manheim Live Facebook page and supporting sight-related causes across Pennsylvania and beyond.”
At a recent meeting, the club honored Jeff Mummau with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and McCoy Nye with the Dick Weidman Award.

“Melvin Jones founded Lions Clubs International in 1917,” Henderson explained. “The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is the highest recognition given by Lions International worldwide, honoring extraordinary humanitarian service and dedication. In Manheim, the award was presented this year to Jeff Mummau for his decades of commitment to the U14 team and the Lions ballfield.”
Mummau not only played for the team and won the Dick Weidman Award in 1980, but has since returned to coach; maintain the field; coordinate sponsorships; and lead major projects such as a new backstop in 2024, a new shed for groundskeeping equipment and a replacement tractor in 2025.
The Dick Weidman Award began when Weidman was a coach with the Manheim Lions baseball team. After his passing, his wife, Ruth, carried on the tradition, and today Mummau helps to present the award on her behalf.
“The award continues to honor Dick’s legacy and his lasting impact on youth baseball in Manheim,” Henderson stated.
The club will mark its 100th anniversary in several ways.
“We’re celebrating throughout the year by recognizing members and community partners, highlighting our history at events like
the baseball award presentations during our meetings and reflecting on a century of service at our club birthday party in November, where the community will be invited to join the celebration,” Henderson said. More information will be posted soon about the party.
He credits the longevity of the club to staying focused on service and being deeply tied to the community.
“Each generation of Lions has stepped up to meet local needs, and that commitment has never faded,” he said. “We’re a group of neighbors who step up for Manheim. All money raised in the community goes back into the community. We like to say, ‘From the community, for the community. From the club, for the club.’”
He expressed appreciation for the club’s community partners, adding, “None of this is possible without the generous support of our local residents and businesses who stand behind us.”
He also encourages anyone who is interested in learning more to come to a Lions Club meeting.
“Joining the Manheim Lions Club means making a visible difference, building friendships and being part of a tradition of service that’s lasted 100 years,” he remarked. “It’s also a great way to give back to the community while working alongside neighbors who share the same spirit of service.”
The Manheim Lions Club meets on the first Monday of the month at the Manheim Historical Society train station, 210 S. Charlotte St., at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.manheimlions.org, search for “Manheim Live” on Facebook or call club secretary Leslie Henderson at 717-989-0183.

The City of Lancaster, in partnership with Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), is seeking an evergreen to serve as the city’s Christmas tree in Penn Square this holiday season. Property owners with a healthy conifer at least 30 feet tall and full on all sides who plan to remove the tree are encouraged to contact the city.
Interested property owners should reach out to city arborist Rick Anderer at 717-291-4846 or randerer@cityoflancasterpa. gov and include a name, address,
phone number, the tree’s location, and a photo. A jury of city staff and LEADS board members will select the tree.
The tree selected will be cut down by the city, then transported and mounted in Penn Square shortly before Thanksgiving. The donor will be recognized for the contribution in a press release and the program at the mayor’s tree lighting. After the holidays, the tree will be transformed into mulch for city parks.
The tree will be the centerpiece of the mayor’s tree lighting in November.

If you’re looking for a paw-some way to spend an afternoon, head to Rapho Township Park, 1499 Fieldstone Drive, Mount Joy, for the 10th annual Mutt Strut pet parade, where dogs will take center stage and steal the show. On Sunday, Oct. 26, pups of all shapes and sizes will strut their stuff in costume, pose for photos, enjoy blessings and, of course, sniff out some free treats. It’s all part of Dog Park Mount Joy’s tail-wagging tradition of celebrating community, creativity and canine companionship. Registration for the event will begin at 2 p.m., and the parade will kick off at 2:45 p.m.
“The main event is the costume parade, a photo booth and pet blessings by the Rev. Ellie Hart-Garner,” said Lynn McCleary, president of Dog Park Mount Joy (DPMJ). “There will be free doggie treats, courtesy of Waggin Wheels Pet Supply, and lots of dog park merchandise for sale.”
The lighthearted event has produced some very creative costumes in the past, she noted.
“We’ve seen wild and crazy individual entries, as well as entire families dressing up in themes, such as ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ ‘The Jungle Book,’ ‘Harry Potter’ and various cartoons,” she said. “A costume favorite was a UPS truck made of a brown cardboard box on a wagon, with a Shih Tzu driver wearing a UPS visor. The creativity is unlimited!”
Along with having fun, pups will compete for prizes.
“Three prizes will be awarded based simply on ‘costumes that make the judges smile,’” McCleary shared. “Prizes will be such things as dog park memberships, sweatshirts and memorial bricks, plus more.”
The annual pet parade was once held at Veterans Memorial Park. In 2012, McCleary attended the parade holding a poster that asked simply, “Dog Park in Mount Joy?” She collected 150 signatures of people who were interested in having a local dog park.
From that list, she recruited Dr. Carla Douple, DVM, as vice president, along with 20 committee members who were willing to roll up their sleeves and help make it happen. In 2015, with construction underway and several fundraisers completed, the first Mutt Strut took place at Rapho Township Park.
The event is an opportunity to bring the community together and highlight Dog Park Mount Joy, which celebrates its ninth anniver-
sary this year.
“Dogs are treasured family members who deserve a place to run free and make friends,” McCleary said. “Watching them enjoy life is one of a dog lover’s greatest pleasures, and having a place where they, too, can make friends is what keeps people and pups coming back year after year.”
Dog Park Mount Joy is a 3-acre off-leash dog park, divided into two sections for large and small dogs.
“Membership is required because the park is funded solely through memberships, fundraisers and donations,” McCleary said. “Hours of operation are dawn to dusk, and entry is via a security swipe card.” Registration is on a rolling 12-month basis, with discounts if a family has more than one dog.
“Members travel from towns nearby and far away and often develop lifelong friendships that grow beyond the park,” she remarked. “Many of the original committee people and several others are integral to keeping DPMJ the beautiful, safe space that it is for the community’s beloved pups.”
The dog park will mark its anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 1, and several events and fundraisers will be held throughout the coming year as the park approaches its 10th year in operation.
“DPMJ will host a humans-only potluck dinner on Nov. 15 at the Orchards Clubhouse, and several upcoming fundraisers are on tap toward park upgrades,” McCleary said. More information can be found on the Dog Park Mount Joy Facebook page.
Participation in the Mutt Strut is free, but donations are always welcome and will be applied toward the rental of the pavilion and prizes. No advance registration is required.
For more information on the dog park, visit www.dogpark mountjoy.com.
3 p.m. in both the Kreider Farms Cultural Center, 547 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, and the main Pleasant View building, 544 N. Penryn Road.
More than 100 tables will be set up with pottery, stained glass, watercolors, paper crafts, jewelry, cards, quilts, knitted items, kitchen baskets, tote bags, pet supplies and more. Hoffer Farm alpaca wool from the community’s farm will be for sale as well.
While many vendors come from the surrounding community, residents at Pleasant View also contribute to the craft bazaar.
“Skilled-care residents made handcrafted items that include bracelets, bookmarks, watercolor paintings and other homemade crafts,” shared Kara Miller, rec therapy coordinator.
Food for sale will include chicken corn soup and beef barbecue, made by auxiliary members, as well as hot dogs, Herr’s chips, desserts and beverages. Soup by the quart will be available to purchase beginning at 2 p.m. until sold out. Hearth and Harrow, the on-site restaurant, will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Hoffman said this year’s bazaar promises to be bigger and better than ever.
“The Kreider Farms Cultural Center is an amazing addition to our layout and expands our use of the beautiful campus,” she remarked. “There is ample parking, and we can provide transportation between buildings as needed using our low-speed electric transport vehicle.”
The auxiliary helped purchase the electric vehicle for Pleasant View, and residents are currently being trained to be volunteer drivers throughout the year, providing rides from one part of the Pleasant View campus to another, including the Manheim Community Library, which is adjacent to the cultural center.
“Esther’s Collectibles Thrift Boutique will be open during the craft bazaar, and there will be door prizes,” Hoffman said, noting that three prizes will be awarded for the on-site thrift store, Hope Served and Hearth and Harrow. “The auxiliary will be selling our 70th anniversary cookbook showcasing our history.”
Proceeds from the event will benefit residents at all levels of care.
“The auxiliary has donated $15,000 to benevolent care this year to support residents who can no longer pay for their health
care,” Hoffman said. “Additionally, funds support the purchase of amenities and enhancements to improve the quality of life for residents.” Along with the electric vehicle, auxiliary funds have been used to purchase woodshop equipment, fitness equipment, benches and more.
“The auxiliary’s mission is to inspire and support the lives of all residents by providing passionate Christ-like services that address their spiritual, physical, social and emotional needs,” Hoffman said.
Many community partners support the craft bazaar, including premier sponsor Interior Fancies. Other sponsors and donors include AssuredPartners, Herr’s, Stauffers of Kissel Hill and Wegmans. Kitchen volunteers at Ruhl’s Church provided expertise, support and use of the church’s professional kitchen to prepare the soup and barbecue.
“The craft bazaar brings a variety of people of all ages together to celebrate community,” Hoffman said. “(It) is a family-friendly event with lots of great food in a beautiful environment, and we welcome all into our community. We are very excited about the range of vendors who will be selling their handcrafted work. Additionally, Esther’s Collectibles Thrift Boutique has received an outpouring of beautiful merchandise. We hope people will come, eat, buy and enjoy the surroundings.”

filmmakers. You’re enjoying food, and you’re talking about your projects and your passion. The gala is held after all the films have been screened at least twice over the weekend. Do I call it a red-carpet event? Yes. Is it a black-tie event? No.”
“The highlight of the festival should be the works,” continued Shank. “But it will be the Lancaster businesses and filmmakers coming together. It’s really a networking event. The film industry, at its core, is collaborative.”
The 60 films that the Red Rose Film Festival will feature were selected from a group of 200 submissions. Each film was viewed by five judges from a panel of 50 and then was assigned a rating from 1 to 10 based on 10 criteria.
The majority of the films that will be screened at the festival received ratings of 8 or higher.
Among the movies that will be presented are a film called “Adamstown,” which was produced by Lancaster-based Rwandan filmmaker Andrew Bilindabagabo, and “Keep Quiet and Forgive,” which was produced and directed by Lancaster cinematographer Sarah McClure.
In 2023, it was estimated that 9,500 films were produced around the world.
“They’re thoughts and ideas that people have the courage to put on the screen,” said Shank. “How many ideas are there? How many thoughts do you have in a day?”
“Lancaster and central Pennsylvania are underrepresented in the film community,” he added. “Our goal is to advocate for the filmmakers. But we’re more an extension of tourism than we are of just the arts.”
Over the festival’s four days, more than 1,000 people, mainly from the country’s northeast corridor - Pennsylvania, New York and Baltimore - are expected to attend the Red Rose Film Festival. Many of them will experience feelings of escape.
“Our biggest audiences are the filmmakers and their families,” said Shank, a resident of Marietta. “People who support the arts are typically 55 and older who want

to send the elevator back down. They want to have conversations with these filmmakers, and those conversations matter. That’s what this platform provides. This is why we’re here.”
Through his creative passion for films, Shank established the Red Rose Film Festival in 2019.
“We technically copied an idea for a film festival from Dubuque, Iowa,” said Shank. “The Julien Dubuque International Film Festival is one of the top-rated film festivals in the country. They focus more on tourism than filmmaking. I was like, ‘Why don’t we have this in Lancaster? Let’s take Lancaster’s love of Lancaster and create a film festival.’ Lancaster loves Lancaster.”
“It keeps me in proximity of an industry for which I chose Lancaster over Los Angeles,” Shank continued. “I didn’t want that life, and now I’m very fulfilled. I didn’t need fame to fulfill my dream. The Red Rose Film Festival has become my platform. This is my way to be connected to artists and filmmakers.”

So, what’s in a name?
A name is an initial point of contact. A name can provide identity and familiarity. A name can come to be associated with ideas, concepts and specific values.
Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) has changed its name. Henceforth, the faith-based, private school will go by Catalyst Christian School (CCS).
“It was not a decision that was taken lightly,” said Ashlee Zimmerman, CCS’ marketing director. “(School officials) realized nothing was going to feel right because it’s so new. It’s going to be hard to pick a name, and it’s going to grow on you when you start using it. They eliminated all of the other ones, and this is the one they picked. The name fits the school so well.”
In late May, the former LAMS formally changed the name it had been known by for 48 years.
An intensive rebranding process produced Catalyst Christian School and the Firehawks as the school’s new mascot, replacing the Bolts. Catalyst Christian School is located at 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz.
“In scientific terms, a catalyst speeds up the process of change,” said Zimmerman. “Faith in Christ is the ultimate in our transformations. The school has energy. The students have energy. We want our students to be launched into the world as catalysts.”
CCS’ renaming process included a list of hundreds of potential new names presented by a branding company; discussion on both the committee and board levels; and input from families, parents and students. Timing wise, the final decision coincided with recent renovations at the school.
“This is something that had been talked about for 10 years,”
said Zimmerman. “The (rebranding) committee boiled down the list of names, presented it to the board and they prayed about it and talked about it. LAMS sometimes caused confusion for some people, who thought you had to be Mennonite to attend. We felt we needed something that was a little more inclusive and matched who we are as a school. The Lititz area is geographically small, and when you look at the area where we’re drawing our students from, it’s bigger.”
There are 330 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade enrolled at CCS for the 2025-26 school year, and the school generally draws students from a 15-mile radius, from communities like Akron, Ephrata, Manheim, Newmanstown and Lititz. CCS employs 42 teachers and 30 administrators and support staff members.
“The school realized we weren’t reaching the people who we felt like we were called to reach,” said Zimmerman. “The school has such a great legacy and such a great foundation. If we are called to be raising up children, we want to make sure the name is not a barrier. We need to help people realize who we are. The question became: ‘How do we help people understand and get people to come and check it out?’”
Currently, there are no shortages
of educational choices for families in Lancaster County. It’s a competitive market that affords parents and students opportunities to explore the best personalized educational options.
“When you look at the area we live in and the choices for education, you need to be able to differentiate yourself from all of those schools,” said Zimmerman. “It’s very competitive, and yet we all kind of root for each other. It’s not like anyone is trying to steal anyone’s students. Each school kind of has its own thing. Having a brand that people recognize is necessary.”
CCS was established as LAMS in 1978. The school, which added high school curriculum in 2018, began with 67 students and six teachers.
“The school was started (because of) a need for more Christian schools,” said Zimmerman. “The schools that were open were at their max, and parents were looking for options. Parents got together and said, ‘Let’s buy land and start a school.’ They saw a need. It was a slow process, it didn’t happen overnight, but the school eventually ran out of space. The way it’s evolved is because there are needs and we wanted to meet those needs.”
