At MTRPP Halloween Events, the More the Merrier

Part of Manheim Township’s charm and strength as a community is its diversity - and its inclusivity.

About five years ago, the Manheim Township Recreation Park Planning (MTRPP) department made a conscious effort to conduct more community events with the express intent of including more groups of people.

This Halloween, MTRPP will be celebrating diversity as much as the autumn harvest, creativity and the change of seasons.

“Prior to five years ago, we weren’t doing that many special events,” said Matt Stopa, who’s been MTRPP’s director for six years. “Some of these events I started, and we’ve made them better. But

Andora Is Right Back Where It Started From

They got the band back together.

Formed in 1975 while students at Hempfield High School, members of the group Andora reunited in 2022, and it feels so good.

Andora consists of Lancaster Township resident Thomas Richards, who sings and plays the rhythm guitar; Ron Sharpe of Millersville, who plays the bass and sings; East Earl resident David Chambers, who does vocals and plays the guitar; and drummer Curt Ruhl of Denver. Richards and Chambers started playing music together in East Petersburg when they were approximately 10 years old. “We had the entire band packed in a little red wagon,” said Richards. “It was one drum, one cymbal, (Chambers’) amp, and a guitar.”

At Salem Hellers Church, faithfulness is a two-way street.

It’s a road that church members have been navigating every day for the last three centuries. And it’s a type of faithfulness worth celebrating.

“I don’t want to talk about our faithfulness to God,” said Joann Cooper, a longtime member of

Sharpe and Ruhl joined about six years later. “I don’t know how we all got together, but I do remember that the first big thing we played was a Battle of the Bands at Hempfield High School,” Richards said. “We had a very unusual rehearsal spot. We rented a storage unit at a place called Stowaway. I think they had one plug for power, no heat. But we’d rehearsed there, and we rehearsed at somebody’s house. We played a Battle of the Bands, and we won.”

The group settled on the name Andora, but the details are a bit fuzzy. Sharpe pointed out that on the television show “Bewitched,” Samantha’s mother’s name is Endora. There is a country on the

Iberian Peninsula named Andora. “Somehow we got to talking and came up with Andora instead of Endora,” said Sharpe.

Andora performed together for 18 months. Then, as Journey sang in 1983, the members went their “separate ways.” Some members even sold their equipment while others performed in different bands.

The quartet mostly kept in contact, and Richards reached out to his bandmates after seeing an advertisement for an open mic night. As Jake Blues said to his brother, Elwood, in the movie “Blues Brothers,” “Hey, man, we’re getting the band back together.”

The answer to that question was the same as the correct response to “Who sang ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart?’” - Yes.

Andora traveled to the beat of a different drum(mer) during the first show back. “When we did the first open mic, we hadn’t contacted Curt yet,” Chambers said. “We didn’t know where he was, so we had a stand-in drummer just for that open mic night. Then we decided we’re going to get hold of Curt and we’re all going to get together.”

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

“Once you’ve played, you always have the bug to play,” Richards said. “Once you perform, you always want to perform. I thought maybe we could get together for the open mic night.”

He went to work. “I knew where Dave was, so I called Dave, and I knew how to get hold of Ron,” Richards recalled. The three met at the Hurricane Grill & Tavern in Columbia, fitting since Andora has been rocking people like a hurricane ever since. “We decided on three or four songs that we still remembered, and we played,” said Richards. “It was fun as usual, and then the phone calls started. Do we want to do this again?”

Andora members met at Chambers’ house to review music, brainstorm, and play some tunes. Ruhl didn’t have his drum set with him, so he used baby toys as shakers to keep rhythm.

Sharpe said the band members agreed they would go back to their (grass) roots. They concluded, “Let’s live for today, but play music from our youth. “We wanted the band to be nothing but the ’70s, what we experienced in our high school days,” Sharpe said. “We did incor -

porate a few of the songs that we played back then, but we wanted to be nothing solely but ’70s classic rock, because that was basically what we listened to during our teenage years. We’ve stuck to that, and our followers know when they come, they’re going to take a trip down memory lane and they’re going to hear ’70s classic rock. We try to give them all the songs that are sing along and danceable. You know the lyrics; you can dance

to it. You’re going to have a good time. Granted, our key audience is 50-plus. But I think classic rock spans the generations.”

Richards added, “It’s been said of the band that we are like a time machine.”

Some of their equipment remains from the first iteration. Chambers still plays the same 1970 Gibson SG guitar he was gifted by his dad at the age of 14.

Ruhl’s father helped him purchase a new set Ludwig blue Vistalite drums. He sold them after the group disbanded. “I wanted to get another set of Vistalites to go back in time, like we did, with our performances. I finally found another set (in Pittsburgh), and that’s what we use today. They’re getting hard to find. That means a lot to me, those drums.”

Andora has monthly shows planned into the spring. “We try to limit it to one performance a month for three reasons,” Sharpe said. “One, we hope we can remember enough music to play one performance a month. Two, can our knees take the loading and the unloading for more than one performance a month? There’s a lot of gear that we move in and out, even at our age, and that’s the

other one, our age. If the gig goes past 9:30 (p.m.), we all get sleepy.”

Andora will play Friday, Oct. 17, from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at Red Pin Bar & Grill, 1495 Millport Road, Lancaster; Friday, Nov. 21, from 8 p.m. to midnight at Riverside Camping Association, 730 E. Strawberry St., Lancaster; Friday, Jan. 23, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Elizabethtown Moose Lodge, 126 Maytown Road; Friday, Feb. 6, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Ephrata Amvets, 614 S. State St.; Friday, March 20, from 7 to 10 p.m. at New Holland American Legion, 35 S. Hoover Ave.; and Saturday, April 18, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Christiana American Legion, 219 Newport Ave.

Visit the group’s Facebook page, “Andora,” for additional information.

Sports Hall of Fame Banquet Set

The Lancaster County Sports Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m. The banquet will honor the 2025 inductees and award winners.

Receiving the J. Freeland Chryst Sports Achievement Award and induction into the Hall of Fame are sisters and U.S. Olympians Brooke and Emma DeBerdine, who played field hockey at Penn Manor; Jeff Glass, a member of the track and field, football, and soccer teams at McCaskey; Olympic bronze medalist Casey Kaufhold, who competed in archery at Conestoga Valley; and Barry Stumpf, a boxer and manager,

trainer, and coach for boxing. George Derbyshire, Manheim Central athletics do-it-all for 58 years, will be honored as the 2025 George W. Kirchner Award recipient.

Other award winners are Lucian Li, named the Inspirational Athlete of the Year, and Ken Gerber, the Kenneth G. Stoudt Volunteer of the Year. The 2025 High School Senior Athletes of the Year as honored by a local newspaper - Manheim Township’s Adam Kingston and Lebanon’s Kailah Correa - will be recognized as well.

Rise Against Hunger Program Announced

Kindness Grows, a local nonprofit organization, in partnership with Manheim Township School District, has announced the Manheim Township Rise Against Hunger program, a community service event to feed children and families with food insecurities locally and worldwide. The effort will also also include collecting donations for Thanksgiving meals for Lancaster County families. The culminating event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Manheim Township High School cafeteria, 115

it’s really the staff that’s put the effort into them and made them what they are today. We spend a lot of time on them, and we’re proud of them and what they’ve become. There was increased staffing, which helps. There are more people and more ability to do things.”

This year, MTRPP has expanded its Halloween holiday offerings to two events. On Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 4 p.m., the township’s ninth annual Halloween Carnival will go down inside and outside of Overlook Activities Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster. Then on the following day, Sunday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m., MTRPP will present its inaugural Low Sensory Spooky Soiree - a toned-down version of the Halloween Carnival with the same spirit - at Overlook Activities Center.

Trick-or-treat in Manheim Township will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. Both of the sponsored events taking place the preceding weekend are rain or shine and free to attend.

“Our purpose has always been to bring the community together for a fun Halloween event,” said Stopa. “We have so many sponsors this year. It’s supposed to be fun and exciting. We’re gearing it toward kids, and there’s a lot going on.”

“We wanted to create an event that was more inclusive,” said Chaley Bulla, an MTRPP coordinator and one of the driving forces behind the Spooky Soiree. “We want it to be a fun Halloween celebration. We want it to be calm and welcoming. We’ll have some games that will have less noise, and all the prizes are sensory sensitive. Really, the goal is to get more people involved.”

a costume contest, a reptile show, pumpkin painting and a quiet space.

As many as 2,000 individuals are expected to attend both Halloween community events.

Individuals interested in volunteering at either of the Halloween events should call 717-290-7180.

“It’s all about community and connection,” said Bulla. “I like bringing families together. I’ll be present at both events. Of all the holidays, Halloween is my favorite. You can’t keep me away from Halloween events. I’m either going to be dressed up as a tennis ball or a highlighter.”

In addition to the pair of Halloween events, MTRPP will host a holiday open house at Stauffer Park on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m.; a Groundhog Day celebration at Stauffer Park on Monday, Feb. 2, from 7 to 8 a.m.; and a community egg hunt on Saturday, March 28, at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex. In addition, the department conducts an Earth Fest at Overlook Park in April and the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Arts Show in September.

“All of our events are spread out so we can give them our full attention,” said Stopa. “I think they’re well-received. The answer is in the participation. If people are upset about an event, they’ll send you emails. If they have a good time, they won’t, and we haven’t gotten a lot of emails about our events.”

Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. During the event, volunteers will package meals with Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief nonprofit organization that coordinates the worldwide packaging and distribution of food and other aid to people in developing nations. Rise Against Hunger will orchestrate the supplies and transport the meals. Community volunteers will pack meals in a simple assembly-line format. People of all ages and abilities are invited to

The Halloween Carnival will feature 11 carnival-style games; a Manheim Township Police Department-sponsored Trunk or Treat with 25 decorated vehicle trunks offering candy, prizes and goodies; a scary walk-through haunted expedition hall; balloon twisters; and five food trucks. At 1:30 p.m., the highly anticipated costume contest/parade will commence, and prizes will be awarded in four categories.

“I think the highlight is the games we offer,” said Stopa. “We spend a lot of time designing these games. I think they come out pretty cool, and they’re not your typical carnival games. Personally, I think working with all the other departments in the township is pretty cool too.”

The Low Sensory Spooky Soiree, which is designed to allow those with sensory sensitivity to celebrate at their own pace, will feature table trick-or-treat, games,

volunteer. In two hours, volunteers will assemble more than 10,000 meals for children worldwide, For an added element of “FUNdraising,” the Manheim Township High School cheerleading and football teams and marching band will compete to see which group can raise the most funds. The FUNdraising trophy will be presented to the top earning student group at the conclusion of this event.

There will also be a Thanksgiving Meals Food Drive. The local community, students and staff members can donate

nonperishable food items. Needed donations include boxed stuffing, canned cranberry sauce, canned green beans, canned corn, boxed mashed potatoes and canned gravy, as well as coffee vouchers. The goal is to collect enough donations that meal packages can be created to feed 100 families in Lancaster County. Donations can be brought to the Manheim Township High School main office through Friday, Oct. 17.

300th Anniversary

of the planning committee for the upcoming celebration. “God has been faithful to this church and kept it together. For some reason, He’s been faithful in keeping this little church on the hill going.”

That 300-year-old faithful pact between God and the church’s members will be just one of the things that will be celebrated when Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers conducts its Service of Thanksgiving at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.

“The fact that we’re 300 years old is a pretty big deal,” said Cooper. “It certainly is a long time. Lancaster wasn’t even a city when our church was established, and the United States wasn’t even a country.”

Salem Hellers’ Service of Thanksgiving will feature a traditional hourlong worship service enriched by hymns and anthems from the Salem Hellers choir and musicians and a special message from retired pastor Bruce Tully. The service will be followed by a dessert reception and an open house.

“The emphasis is on giving thanks and being thankful for God’s protection over the years,” said Bill McLain, Salem Hellers Church’s consistory chair. “There will be opportunities for people to be led through the stories of the church’s stained glass and some very old photos and artifacts that tell the history of the church.”

The organizers of the church’s Service of Thanksgiving sent out 400 invitations to former Salem Hellers members, current members and their families and friends and former staff members to attend the event.

“We’re anxious to see who comes,” said Cooper, a resident of Manheim Township. “Some of our former members don’t live in the area. They’re people who had a detachment at some point. We told our current members to invite members of their families to come celebrate with us.”

On any given Sunday, about 60 individuals attend services at Salem Hellers Church. Sunday services begin at 9:45 a.m., and the

St. Peter’s Posts Concert

St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host a concert featuring the Ocean Grove Auditorium Quartet on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 4 p.m. At 3 p.m., attendees will have the opportunity to meet the members of the quartet and learn about their musical journeys.

church also offers a youth Sunday school, a vacation Bible school in the summer and adult education. It sponsors and supports numerous community events and causes, as well.

“I think it’s a congregation that seeks to serve the Lord and that cares very deeply about one another,” said McLain, a resident of East Lampeter Township. “We constantly hear that the church is friendly to outsiders. The Gospel is preached every Sunday, and people are reminded why they need Jesus as a Savior.”

“With our location on the hill, we hope that our church building is a lighthouse for the community,” said Cooper. “Throughout the years, we’ve had various concerts, and we’ve helped out in the community. We’ve also had fun days for kids. For many years, we’ve been giving to local ministries.”

After meeting for worship in neighbors’ homes, German settlers to the Conestoga Valley area built a permanent log cabin house of worship near the Jacob Heller family farm in the early 1700s. The present sanctuary was constructed in 1896, and the education building was added in 1958.

Since 1725, Salem Hellers Church has been led spiritually by 26 pastors.

“Many people from the Germanic cultures came to the United States because of religious persecution, and many settled in the Conestoga Valley area,” said Cooper. “They began coming in the 1700s, and they settled in a 20-mile area. Because transportation was slow, meeting places had to be close by. We had a very humble beginning with a log cabin with dirt floors and slab seats. If you look at the level of sanctuary we have today, it’s been quite the evolution.”

“I think Salem Hellers is following the trajectory of what you see in society,” said McLain. “Not as many people go to church as they used to. Certainly, in the 1700s, it was different and everyone went to church.”
