Renovations that will help serve generations.
That’s how Loft Community Partnership (LCP) officials view the construction project that will soon get underway at its future home at 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville.
On Oct. 9, LCP started a capital campaign to pay for those improvements. Having raised $800,000 to purchase the building, the nonprofit is looking to generate an additional $1.2 million to fund the
CCS Building Group is slated to begin the project on Monday, Oct. 27, with a goal of completing the work in January 2026. LCP is seeking to raise the money by that time and move into the facility in February. Go to www.loftcp.org to contribute to the capital campaign.
The 10,000-square-foot building is approximately three times the size of LCP’s current space, located in Jefferson Hall at 164 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville.
LCP capital campaign chair Joy Olcott said the project factors in
400 families a week, so we have a great need to fill in helping our neighbors in need,” she said.
CCS Building Group is the contractor trusted with overseeing the work. “This project involves a combination of level one and level two alterations,” said David Carrera, the project manager for CCS Building Group. “Level two alterations are a reconfiguration of an existing facility into a kind of new use and purpose. Here, the existing building was Lancaster EMS and is now being converted to a local food pantry and clothing, distribution kind of facility. There’s a complete alteration of the

Sarah Zeitler wants to get people talking about some of life’s most basic necessities while making sure everyone has access to them.
The Lancaster woman is the local face of I Support the Girls, a national nonprofit that collects bras, underwear and feminine hygiene products for girls and women in need. What began for Zeitler as a simple search for a place to donate gently used bras has grown into a mission she calls both energizing and deeply personal.
“I’m very focused on changing the conversation,” says Zeitler, who has two teenage daughters, ages 14 and 16. “Why don’t we talk about pads and tampons? ... I tell my girls, ‘You don’t have to be embarrassed by this topic.’ I want to help people who don’t have access to products most of us take for granted.”
Zeitler discovered I Support the Girls in late 2024. When she realized Lancaster no longer had an active chapter, she quickly stepped up. The hyperlocal aspect drew her in.
“I like that the bras you’re giving are not going to women in another state,” she said. “They’re going right back to local women. I also wanted to be sure these bras were going to women in need who were going to use them.”
I Support the Girls began 10 years ago when founder Dana Marlowe started the organization in the Washington, D.C., area. From one donated bra, the organization has grown to more

The Elks Hoop Shoot isn’t just about sinking free throws. It’s about building grit, confidence and determination, with the unique chance for kids to land in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
“Gritty kids are determined hard workers,” said Valerie Kissinger, Hoop Shoot lodge director for the Columbia-Middletown Lodge 1074. “Gritty kids become gritty adults with strong work ethics and goal-setting skills. … The Hoop Shoot can offer similar life lessons as other sports programs, but what other program offers kids the chance to be in the Hall of Fame?”
The annual Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 Hoop Shoot will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9, in the gym of Columbia High School, 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and the contest will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Youths ages 8 to 13 are invited to participate in the competition, which is divided into six divisions: girls and boys ages 8 and 9, 10 and 11 and 12 and 13.
Participants attempt 25 free-throw shots, and the highest scorers in each division advance to the next level. First-place winners from the local competition are eligible to proceed to the district competition on
Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026, in Carlisle. The six first-place winners from districts have the opportunity to proceed through a state competition, a regional competition and then on to the national competition in Chicago on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
There is no charge to participate, and the Elks cover travel costs through each level, Kissinger said.
The local event doesn’t happen for several weeks, providing lots of opportunity to participants to practice their foul shots before coming to the competition, she added.
Participants do not need to be the fastest, biggest or strongest athletes on the court to succeed, Kissinger said, noting that practice and precision are key to doing well. Grit and determination help too, she said, adding that when youths step up to the free throw line with the Elks, it will always be a level playing field.
In the last Hoop Shoot competition, Carrigan Price, daughter of Ryan and Michelle Price of Landisville, won the local Columbia-Middletown 1074 competition in the 8 to 9 age group and then proceeded to win the district, state, regional and national competition.
With a score of 45 out of 50 shots, Carrigan won
Nationals in Chicago, as well as the Getty Powell award (awarded to the girl and boy with the highest score in the national competition).
As a national winner, Carrigan attended the Elks state convention in Harrisburg; the Elks national convention in Kansas City, Mo.; and traveled to Springfield, Mass., earlier this month to have her name permanently inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
“We are so extremely¬†proud of the¬†wonderful young athlete she is!” said Kissinger, who accompanied Carrigan to the national competition.
“She is very respectful of her other athletes’ feelings with lots of compassion for them.”
Kissinger emphasized that participating in the
Hoop Shoot offers youths much more than just a chance to shoot baskets.
“The Hoop Shoot uses something fun like basketball to teach kids about goal setting and hard work, developing grit in the process,” she said, encouraging people to watch videos with commentary directly from past participants at http://bit.ly/4mXNLSQ.
“These videos about grit, or griteos, are excellent examples of how the Hoop Shoot has developed grit in past national finalists. They are great to show to families, contest volunteers or anyone else who wants to learn what the Hoop Shoot does.”

VisionCorps will offer an online webinar about surgery on the retina of the eye on Monday, Oct. 27, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. as part of its speaker series. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Dina Gewaily, an experienced retinal surgeon from Lancaster Retina Specialists, will present information about retinal surgery. She previously practiced in Philadelphia and is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania,
existing facility to facilitate program needs associated with the new use for the Loft.”
Carrera explained that level one alterations are more moderate renovations, like painting for example.
“Level two is doing a reconfiguration,” he said. “The existing garage is going to be reconfigured to serve a new purpose as a main entry into the facility and it’s the main entrance lobby, welcome area for people coming into the facility. The garage will also serve as a food storage area with refrigerated cooling and a walk-in freezer box for all of the food that is going to be coming into the facility.”
The project is especially meaningful for CCS Building Group president Bill Koch Sr. “Our company focus is obviously being part of the community,” he said.
“Personally, my wife (Kelly) serves at the Loft community, and we’re neighbors.
We live a mile away. We are part of the community that the Loft supports.”
LCP board president Tom Keller noted that the new home will help ensure the group’s long-term viability.
“We need a sustainable home. That is really the primary reason,” he said.
“We’re helping so many people right now that we aren’t just a pop-up food
pantry anymore. We are in the community every single day, and we need a sustainable home to be able to sustain what we’re doing. How we’re currently operating is not sustainable, with operating out of Jefferson Hall or out of the churches in the past. It wasn’t sustainable for the community or our volunteers, so this is going to really provide us longterm sustainability for the for the local community.”
LCP executive director Jenna Graeff added, “We have experienced three moves as an organization, so we hope this is our fourth and final.”
Keller concurs. “From here, we can really support the community with those smaller pop-up-style food pantries,” he said. “Having the resources to come in here and be able to distribute and be able to have our core team and core people in one spot, with offices, is really everything we need.”
Graeff echoed Keller’s sentiments. “This is a sustainability need for an organization that looks to be in this community for generations to come,” she said. “We hope that what we do here supports the Penn Manor community and supports the Loft Community Partnership and all that we do and all of our partnerships for generations.”
This year’s edition of the Dr. Hazel I. Jackson lecture series at Millersville University will be a stage play titled “Midst of Faith” that details the life and legacy of Jackson and her role in the community. The performances will take place on Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Student Memorial Center, 21 S. George St., Millersville.
“Midst of Faith” was written and is directed by Millersville alumnus Nate Gadsden of the Class of 1997, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English. The play serves to keep Jackson’s memory alive for current and future students at Millersville University.
The performances are free to attend. Tickets are required and can be obtained at www.etix .com/ticket/v/23671/.

The City of Lancaster, in partnership with Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), is seeking an evergreen to serve as the city’s Christmas tree in Penn Square this holiday season. Property owners with a healthy conifer at least 30 feet tall and full on all sides who plan to remove the tree are encouraged to contact the city.
Interested property owners should reach out to city arborist Rick Anderer at 717-291-4846 or randerer@cityoflancasterpa. gov and include a name,
address, phone number, the tree’s location, and a photo. A jury of city staff and LEADS board members will select the tree.
The tree selected will be cut down by the city, then transported and mounted in Penn Square shortly before Thanksgiving. The donor will be recognized for the contribution in a press release and the program at the mayor’s tree lighting. After the holidays, the tree will be transformed into mulch for city parks.
The tree will be the centerpiece of the mayor’s tree lighting in November.

Locally, Zeitler collects donations and works with partners including Second Grace, which supports young single mothers, and River’s Place, a free clothing closet at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim Township. She has also begun reaching out to local doctor’s offices, especially plastic surgeons, to encourage women undergoing breast surgery to donate their gently used bras.
At her job as a product manager at Armstrong, she regularly collects donations. And thanks to I Support the Girls
national partnerships with major retailers like Victoria’s Secret, she receives shipments of new bras to distribute.
“I like to make sure there is diversity in what I’m giving away,” she said. “I want to have everything from sports bras to special occasions, from tween sizes to larger sizes.”
Her work has become a family effort. Her daughters, August and Citizen, pitch in with everything from social media posts to sorting donations.
They’ve also joined her at training sessions offered by the national nonprofit, turning the project into a shared mission of empowerment.
This year, Zeitler received a grant to create a permanent collection site in Lancaster. While she’s still searching for the right location, she continues to collect donations at her home and through temporary community partners. This fall, for example, a collection bin will be available at Pocket Books, 903 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, through October.
For Zeitler, the work is about more than just distributing products; it’s about starting conversations that too often remain in the shadows.
“I’m passionate about women’s causes,” she said. “We have very unique needs. Men don’t have to worry about having the right bras to go to work and feel professional or
feel confident in their own skin. This is something I’m very passionate about, and doing this work literally energizes me.”
She notes that her involvement in the project has raised her own awareness about community needs.
“Think about victims of domestic violence,” she said. “The police often collect undergarments as evidence, and these women are sent home without underwear. ... Girls literally miss school because they don’t have the proper hygiene products.”
It’s also important to
Zeitler that donations stay in the local area.
“Everything that comes into us, whether it’s money, hygiene products or bras, it all goes right to women and girls right here in Lancaster,” she said. “This is really a boots-on-theground organization, and we are helping right where it’s needed.”
