Two Candidates Remain in October Irish Presidential Contest

Connolly'sPresidential Message of Unity and Inclusion - Gavin withdraws

Nominationsfor this month?sIrish presidential election have closed. Owing to a scandal, the field hasnarrowed to just two contenders!

Irish presidential candidate Catherine Connolly, an independent TD for Galway West, has launched her campaign with a call for unity, inclusion, and renewed dialogue across the island of Ireland.

Connolly, who grew up in the Galway suburb of Shantalla asone of 14 siblings, hasbuilt a long career in public service. A former clinical psychologist with the Western Health Board in Ballinasloe, she also isa barrister. A fluent Irish speaker and graduate of German psychology studies, she hasrepresented Galway West in the Dáil since 2016

Running asan independent candidate in the 2025 presidential election, Connolly has drawn support from a broad coalition including Sinn Féin, the Social Democrats, the Labour Party, the Green Party, People Before Profit, the 100%Redresscampaign, and several independent Oireachtas members.

Connolly said her campaign isfounded on the belief that the Presidency must belong to all the people of Ireland? north and south? and be rooted in ?respect, dialogue, and inclusivity? She described the Good Friday Agreement as?our compass,?guiding the island?songoing journey toward peace and reconciliation

?The next phase of our peace processmust focus on breaking down barriers, building understanding, and preparing responsibly for the possibility of constitutional change,? she said

Her vision for the Presidency isnot to dictate political outcomesbut to bring people together and foster genuine engagement between communities Connolly emphasizes that inclusion must go beyond symbolism? calling for full participation of people in the North in the cultural, civic, and public life of the nation

She hasalso voiced strong support for extending voting rights in Presidential elections to citizensin Northern Ireland, a proposal first made by the 2013 Constitutional Convention

?A President for all of Ireland must be elected by all of Ireland,? Connolly declared.

Her vision is of a Presidency of Inclusion? ?one that reflects compassion, fairness, and respect for difference.?To unionists, she promisesthat their identity will never be diminished; to nationalists, she callsfor generosity and respect; and to those new to Ireland, she affirmstheir central role in building a shared and peaceful future.

Jim Gavin Withdrawsfrom Race

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil?sJim Gavin haswithdrawn from the presidential race following reportsthat he failed to register a tenancy with the Residential TenanciesBoard (RTB) in 2004 and wasaccused of failing to return a tenant?s deposit in 2009.

In a statement, Gavin said: ?The office of Uachtarán na hÉireann isthe highest in the land and the pinnacle of public service. It is an office that must be untainted by controversy or distraction ?

President Humphreys?

Heather Humphreys hasemerged asthe front-runner in the Irish presidential race that will be decided on October 24th.

AsFine Gael?snomination for the Irish presidential race, to many Humphreys representsconservative, rural Ireland. Radicalism isthe last thing that voters associate with Fine Gael. Nevertheless, in many waysHumphreysisa radical candidate and one who could play a role in reshaping perceptionsof the country at a crucial stage of its constitutional evolution. Humphreys hasdescribed herself as ?a proud Ulsterwoman, a Protestant and an Irish republican? .

Wolfe Tone?sUnited Irishmen movement and rebellion wasexactly that in character (with emphasison men rather than women, granted). Humphreys appearsan improbable heir to that quashed rebellion two hundred yearsago.

When Humphreysuses the word ?republican?there isa present and even future tense implied

Profound splitsin the Irish republican tradition arising from the partisanship that has accrued to it has made the term republican contentious in Ireland Rather than focuson those splitsand the various appropriationsof the republican tradition that followed in their wake, Humphreysisfocused on what a republic means, and could mean, in the 21st century

But wasIrish republicanism historically not alwaysJanus-facing, deriving its authority from the past (for example the Easter 1916 Rebellion) and fixated on a fulfilment of an all-Ireland republic free from any link with Britain? All true Yet there isa key difference. That wasa republicanism of rigidly predetermined outcomes, which scanted the possibility of itsassuming novel forms, of taking new directions.

Humphreys?identification with republicanism of today and tomorrow isone that isopen to radical re-evaluation of what the term means.

John Hume once argued that extreme nationalistsin Ireland had ?stolen the word?republicanism, and travestied the ideals promulgated by Tone ? to unify ?Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter?through their wedding the narrative of republicanism in Ireland to violence Could Humphreys?election asHead of State form part of a renewal and restitution of the term? Humphreysneed not focus on Irish unity as a theme in her presidential campaign since she already embodies it. That a woman of her background hasembraced republicanism is resonant of a more broadly acceptable republicanism.

So far, so rosy Humphreysis culturally and politically an ecumenical candidate who doesnot need to explicitly position herself assuch. She also chimes with Ireland?s constitutional position today, with its capacity for constitutional evolution in the future.

Yet there isa nettle that must be grasped here. When Ireland was partitioned, the people of Humphreys? village on the border, Drum in Co Monaghan, went to bed one night British and woke up the following Irish Naturally, national belonging cannot change like the seasons. It took a very long time for national identification with Ireland to broadly take root in Drum, which washistorically entirely Protestant in composition

The people of Drum have experienced the trauma of ?losing?a nationality They also gained another over the course of a century That presentsa model from which others could learn

It startswith embracing an identity based on what Ireland istoday There are complex reasons why some constituencies in Northern Ireland are so wedded to imageson murals depicting victoriesin the 1600s One isthe terror of confronting their contemporary reality Part of that reality isthat unionism isdying Its demise isnot due to a lack of drive to preserve the union, but to the objective weakening of the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

VIEW & MAURICE

A rather limited affirmation of identity isavailable in glorifying a past in which the evangelical and political will of England validated unionism?s project That retrospective focusis simultaneously a reminder of the absence of Britain?saffirmation today

Last summer I visited Drum and noticed something remarkable The only Irish language sign in the village was An Post, the post office The name of the national post service must be accepted if a village isto have a post office Besidesthat, nothing There isno bilingual sign for ?Droim? (meaning ?ridge? ) on the way in or out It may be the sole example of a village, town or city in the Republic of Ireland that does not display the Irish language variant of a place name

Aspart of her campaign, Humphrey hassaid: ? I passed Irish in my Leaving Cert and, like a lot of people in thiscountry, I went out to the world of work and didn? t use Irish? I promise that if I am elected as president, I will return to the Gaeltacht and I will learn Irish?Humphreys?pledge to learn Irish is qualitatively different from, say, Mary McAleese?sto do the same when she became president Humphreys? embrace of the language could demonstrate to some people from her background who remain sceptical about the language that it belongsto them asmuch as to anyone and augment a new attitude to the language in the country that is important to secure a shared vision of Irish national cultural heritage, Kneecap isthe first band to bring hip hop to the world in the Irish language By doing so, it isfocusing lesson recovering the Irish language (an inevitable reaching back towardssomething lost) than creating new waysfor it to grow in the future

Drum , Co Monaghan - t he only Prot est ant village in t he Republic of Ireland

The loss-recovery dynamic hasbeen swapped for a create-cultivate one. That shift not only rejuvenatesthe language, but it also offersa new way of perceiving it.

Kneecap and Heather Humphreysappear at first glance to be extremely odd bedfellows. Yet they have something crucial in common, something Ireland needs today. They have a proven ability to move two key aspects of Irish heritage ? language and republicanism ? from a retrospective to a progressive vision. And a progressive vision isneeded: the next Irish president might be in office when unity referendums are held in Ireland.

Hall of Crying Shadows

The Legend of t he Banshee of Bunrat t y Cast le

?List en t o t hem , t he children of t he night . What m usic t hey m ake!?

? Bram Stoker

?On your kneesall of you Witness the slaying of his line and fall to your kneesand swear fealty and give me homage!?Fergusproclaimed

The usurper turned and his sinister shadow was cast on the lord?sheir and hislady in waiting.

?Hold thou faithlesscur! Stay thine sword! ? a voice declared harshly

Fergusturned and almost dropped his own sword in shock.

The seneschal rose his shadow cast gigantically and his eyesfierce smoldering into his assailant?seyes The once mortally wounded man now seemed to rise with a surge of impossible strength, thoroughly revitalised.

?What dark witchery? How isthis possible? Are thou a revenant??

?I am Sir Cormac of Bunratty seneschal to the Lordsof

Justintimefor AllHallowsEve

House O?Brien AsI stand this castle will not fall to traitors!?

?You are mortally wounded This will not take long, ? Fergusreplied yet his eyesbetrayed fear ashe saw himself mirrored in hisfoe?s blade

?En garde! Lay on then!?the seneschal roared

?Through the postern gate my lord ?the lady in waiting whispered to the young lord while the seneschal distracted Fergus

The seneschal pulled the crossbow bolt from hischest and snapped it like a twig The blades crossed and crossed again, more and more fiercely till they were sparking The clash of swordsresounded though the hall

The shadows of the fighters were cast on tapestriesand mounted stag heads by the wild torch light

Staunching the bleeding of his wounds with hisfist the seneschal wielded hissword with one hand with such terrible ferocity that it drove his adversary relentlessly back though his enemy gripped his sword in both hands

The traitor?s gloating smile disappeared as the once hopelessly wounded seneschal drove him back with superior strength and swordsmanship A desperate attempt to pull a torchrom the wall to thrust at the seneschal?s face only set a tapestry on fire

Fergusrecoiled ashe saw the dark silhouette of the seneschal advance on him against a background of flame

?I yield!?Fergussquealed

?In your own words no quarter,?the seneschal snarled Fergusparried thrice and overextended his hand only to have it severed at the wrist The gauntleted hand and sword clanged on the flagstones.

Hysterical screamsceased asthe seneschal swung his sword in a shimmering arc severing the traitor?s head With hisenemy slain whatever surge of unnatural strength left him and the seneschal swayed, staggered, and fell to the cold flagstones.

?Mary and Brighid what possessed him?? a squire exclaimed.

She did The banshee entered hismortally wounded body and lent him an immortal'sstrength She was a proud noblewoman of the faerkind who wielded a sword of celestial fire against the warriorsof the Fir Bolg, Fomorians, and Milesians until the exile of her storied race into the hollow hills.

The last clash for Bunratty was never a true duel but rather an execution.

Bunrat t y Cast le st ill st ands firm t oday

The seneschal looked sadly at the gathered scullery maids of the household, the pages, and squiresthat he tacitly thought of the family he never had

It wasthen the banshee shed the mortal form she possessed like another skin, vainly shuddering with the vain disdain of an immortal for the mortalkind

Asshe did do the artificial vitality left the seneschal. He shuddered spasmodically and violently ashe sank to the ground.

Meanwhile beyond the crenulated bastion of Bunratty castle

A punishingly chill wind swept in extinguishing the red flickering smilesof turnips carved as jack o lanterns. The gust intensified putting out the torchesof the enemy in succession just as they were about to set fire to the thatched dwellings of the folk who lived in sight of the castle. The wind took on an eerily human cadence asit rose like a ghostly battle cry A blind wisewoman tending to a wounded lamb looked up.

?Hark! She cries! "The banshee, ancestral harbinger of imminent doom to the lords of Bunratty and their noble house!?

The messenger of death began her lament softly as a whisper like a caressof cold fingers shuddering through the seneschal?s soul. Her keening wasoften described as a wail. It may have been so to mortal ears yet there were wordsto the banshee?ssong uttered in an ancient sacred tongue forbidden to mortals. It would drive them mad or be fatal if they heard it much less try to sing it and yet the seneschal did so Hislipsmoved silently as he dared sing with her in duet The banshee had never heard a mortal attempt it in centuries

Meanwhile in the castle chapel the Lady of Bunratty beamed at faint words.

?Do not put me my grave just yet wife ?

The Lord of Bunratty yet drew breath. In defiance of convention, hislady laughed and wept as she held his face tenderly

Suddenly a lordly coach drawn by pale plumed horses driven by a headlesscoachman appeared The phantom horses stomped impatiently asit drew reign before the seneschal?s ghost. The coachman beckoned with a skeletal hand.

?One moment please ?the seneschal implored the coachman

?My lady I thank thee,?he said in homage to the banshee

?It wasnothing to me,?the banshee answered.

?But it waseverything to me my lady,?the seneschal replied He offered a courtly bowed before boarding the coach just as his mortal form took a last shuddering breath.

It wasthen that the rain fell in the way of these lands A sudden torrent hailing the banshee in the cold tears of all those she called to the last dark horizon over the centuries

She suddenly turned to meet blazing green eyes.

?Well met Aoife daughter of Cormac Lady of Bunratty,? the banshee said formally

?Be gone! You will not claim him!?the Lady cried.

A rebuke burned at the banshee?s lipsfor the insolence of mortals, yet she relented.

The Lady of Bunratty raised a crucifix in a trembling hand believing it would ward me off

The banshee only smiled patronisingly.

?Thou mistakes me entirely mortal I am a praise singer to lordsnot some lowly assassin I am not here for your good lord tonight. Farewell Lady of Bunratty.?

In aftermath the seneschal?s cold hands were solemnly enfolded on the hilt of his sword a banner of the O'Brien clan draped gently over him as he wasborne by retainersfrom the hall amid lamentations The bard led the procession strumming his harp and sing a dirge bearing the guardian of Bunratty in torch-lit march asthe banshee watched from afar

The banshee had to remain detached, but it wasnot above her vanity to say she wasnot unmoved.

Meanwhile something changed in the young heir of Bunratty.

"The enemy has retreated my lord," a retainer reported

"Not quickly enough My horse and my armour! We will pursue and ride them down! Our swordswill be red with their craven blood ere dawn,?the young lord said

The Lady of Bunratty appeared, and the retainersstood down dutifully.

"Stand down fool boy The banshee haswept for enough of our blood tonight already The Lord of Bunratty yet draws breath and he has summoned you to his bedside."

Asthe seneschal took a last shuddering breath the banshee glided to the battlements aloof from their keening Warriorsof a rival clan reinforced by Elizabethan English pikemen and knights marched on the castle Their onslaught met a flight of arrows felling two knightsas the rest fell back Their onslaught met a flight of arrows.

Torchlight danced fluttered crimson on morion helms, armour, and shields asthey eagerly awaited the order to storm the castle.

BANSHEEconclusion

The banner of House O'Brien unfurled defiantly just as the enemy commander paced his ranks like a caged wolf impatient for carnage. He smiled with a predatory thrill asthe drawbridge began to groan open "Prepare to storm the keep! No quarter!"

The enemy commander?ssmile faded at the jarring sound of the drawbridge halting itsdescent The overthrow of the lord of Bunratty had been thwarted. The retainersof Bunratty castle stood impassively arrayed on the battlements Suddenly a knight doffed his helm and a chorusof ecstatic huzzahs erupted from the defenders of Bunratty "He lives! The lord of Bunratty lives! Fall back! Herald! Sound the retreat!"; the enemy commander ordered The besiegerslowered their bannersand skulked away into the darkness

Numb to the sensationsof cold the banshee lingered under the shockingly rain as if hailed in the cold tears of the bereaved She was immune to the elements but not so the enemies of Bunratty The haplessbesiegersscreamed as the rain lashed down on them as if hastening their retreat

Meanwhile cascading crimson hair turned silvery pale as the banshee doffed her cowl. Cock's crow wasalmost upon her. She had lingered too long in the mortal realm A portal appeared before her like a reopened wound, and she faded back into the depthsof eternal darknessand legend.
