As an early admirer of the Breed, and even later, a Purebred Shorthorn Breeder myself, I am thrilled to be able to Host this 18th conference with the support and assistance of the Canadian Shorthorn Association and its Provincial Affiliate Associations.
I believe that Dennis Cox, a long time Shorthorn Breeder from Quebec Province, and his Organizing Committee, Casey Bishop (Alberta), Carl Lehmann (Saskatchewan), Grayson Ross (Manitoba), Martin Mason (Ontario) and Marvin Peters (Maritimes) has developed a truly World Class Conference event here in Canada.
On this 18th Conference, guests will be able to visit a number of Canadian Shorthorn Breeders as well as some iconic Canadian scenic, entertainment and historic venues. Along the way I hope you can also enjoy the varied scenic landscape of our vast and beautiful Country.
Welcome to Canada, Canadian Shorthorns and a wonderful Canadian World Shorthorn Conference.
Richard Moellenbeck
CSA President Welcome
I would like to welcome everyone to the World Shorthorn Conference here in our beautiful and vast reaching country of Canada. We are excited to share to the Shorthorn Industry our different avenues of the breed. Since the last time the world tour came to Canada, there have been great improvements to our breed that has Shorthorns rising in popularity.
A big change was the move to a new registry provider for our Herdbook. We teamed up with DigitalBeef to provide the membership a program that is easy to navigate and access a wide range of information on animal from pedigree, weights, EPD’s, progeny and more. This ease of access and transparency is appreciated by the commercial producers who are looking to add Shorthorn genetics into their herd. Our membership has also taken advantage of using DigitalBeef as whole herd management tool they can use for day to day operations.
We are also proud to be part of the IGS (International Genetic Solutions) Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation where our inventory joins an animal network that has over 21 million animal records, 23 partners from around the world of multiple different breeds. The perk of joining IGS the EPD’s on our cattle and be directly compared to cattle from both American Shorthorn Association and Shorthorn Beef in Australia. This feature makes the trade of genetics between the three countries very appealing for producers.
Another area of improvement that has everyone in the breed excited about is our youth programming. Our Junior Association has grown to a nationally organized board that with the help of the CSA and the provincial association’s successfully runs a National Junior Show in the summer and the STARS Leadership Conference in the Winter. This year’s show is in Lindsay Ontario and the youth conference was held in Turo, Nova Scotia this past February. We greatly appreciate the breeders from across the country in supporting the Junior Association to help build the future leaders of our breed, agriculture industry and country.
The exhibition of cattle across the country has helped with the breed popularity by being part of many shows that is highlighted by 4 major shows in the fall located in Edmonton, Regina, Brandon & Toronto. The National show rotates throughout these locations and the quality of cattle the breeders are bringing out continues to get more competitive year after year.
As you travel throughout the country and visit with our membership, you will find a variety of different herd goals, but one thing will stay constant is our friendly, easy going nature that is excited to discuss SHORTHORN!
Dennis Cox
Conference Committee Welcome
I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has played a part in orchestrating this year’s World Shorthorn Conference/Tour, 2025. The meticulous planning and dedication that has gone into coordinating venues, engaging advertisers, and cooperating with local businesses to celebrate our passion for Shorthorn cattle is truly commendable.
A special acknowledgment must be extended to our World Conference planning committee, whose efforts have crafted a memorable itinerary and who continue to oversee the logistics of the World Conference/Tour. Your time, passion for the breed and care has been instrumental in organizing the 2025 World Conference.
To all those attending the conference, I am thrilled at the prospect of sharing the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of our Canadian heritage. From the majestic mountain peaks around Banff, Alberta, to the thunderous and awe-inspiring waterfalls at Niagara, Ontario, you are set to experience the diverse landscapes that define Canada.
Your involvement is crucial, not only to the success of this conference but also to the broader goal of promoting our breed. Together, we are making advancements in genetics and highlighting the exceptional traits of our Shorthorn livestock - from the competitive atmosphere of the auction barns to the show rings where they are showcased.
We look forward to 17 days filled with memorable experiences, where we can share thoughts, stories and perhaps even a local beverage or two in good company, as we travel together across our beautiful country.
Once again, thank you for your commitment and enthusiasm. Let’s make this 18th World Shorthorn Conference a memorable celebration of our shared passion for the Shorthorn breed.

Ramblin Ranch | Airdrie,
Ramblin Ranch is a family-run purebred Shorthorn cattle operation located in beautiful Rocky View County, Alberta — just a convenient 30-minute drive north of Calgary. While Jeremy and Christine have long been involved in the livestock industry, they officially began their Shorthorn journey in 2021 with the purchase of their first registered cattle. Since then, their herd has grown to over 30 head of quality purebred Shorthorns.
At the heart of Ramblin Ranch is a strong commitment to genetics, structure, and balance. The focus is on producing highquality, functional, easy-fleshing cattle that perform in the pasture, succeed in the show ring, and bring real value to the beef industry. Continuous improvement is key — the herd is developed through careful selection and a progressive breeding program that includes an extensive use of artificial insemination. This allows for consistent quality and the integration of
AB
elite genetics to advance maternal strength, calving ease, docility, and overall herd performance.
Ramblin Ranch proudly offers select females and semen for private sale, as well as through fall consignment events. Bulls are available by private treaty beginning in February each year. At Ramblin Ranch, it’s more than just raising cattle — it’s about building a family legacy through honest, hardworking animals that stand out in any program.

Shorthorns have been in the Stephenson Family since 1684 when George Stephenson purchased the cow family that would later produce Hubback (319). Later John Stephenson would breed the bull Belvedere (1706) that would be so influential in the Thomas Bates herd.
Jasper W. Stephenson immigrated to Canada in 1907 and later developed a herd of Shorthorns named Newbiggon. His son D. H. Herb Stephenson established his Frimley Shorthorn herd in 1965. Herb’s daughter, Terry and son in law, Gary Carter imported Mandalong Super Flag in 1972 along with Mandalong Royal Ferrari and two Mandalong Roany cows carrying on with the Newbiggon herd name. Dan and Jill Stephenson purchased cows from Cecil Staples Diamond herd and acquired his herd name and brand.
Today Diamond Shorthorns is run by Dan and Jill and their daughters’ families, Jaimie and Praveen Chouhan (Vikram and Veronica) and Jacqueline and Wyatt Elliott (Katie).

Crooked Post Shorthorns |
To all those participating in the 2025 World Shorthorn Conference, welcome to Canada and welcome to Crooked Post Shorthorns!!
An awful lot has happened in the Shorthorn breed since the last tour came through here over 20 years ago. We are proud of the progress this breed has made in that time but more remains to be done as we all aim to position the breed back to its former glory around the world.
You can’t manage what you don’t measure! Through our 30+ years of raising Shorthorn cattle we’ve embraced many tools of progressive management practices to bolster our program forward. Whole herd performance reporting, genomic testing, ultrasound carcass scanning and feed efficiency testing are a few areas of measurement that we concern ourselves with.
We aim to build strong relationship with our
Rocky Mountain House, AB
clients, staying attune to their needs and feedback is critical. Demand is strong for the heterosis power of Shorthorn genetics in the commercial herds. Delivering in a big way the merits of calving ease, fertility, physical soundness, efficient growth performance, maternal prowess, carcass attributes and longevity. Profit is King!
Thank you all so kindly for investing your valuable time and money to participate in this tour. It’s a huge honour to have you as guests!
Long live the Shorthorn cow!!
Schutz Cattle Co. | Stony Plain, AB
Schutz Cattle Company has been growing, curating, and refining their cattle operation for over 40 years. Three family generations have bought, sold, produced and marketed shorthorn cattle with dedication and passion for the breed. Schutz Cattle Co. along with the “Six S” name have stood the test of time. Schutz Cattle Company is rooted from Six S Farms with Colin being one of four children to Rod and Sandie Schutz and married to his wife, Brandy.
The third generation is being lead by Landon, a recent graduate of Texas Tech University (Bachelor of Animal Science) and fresh off the American senior collegiate livestock judging circuit. Landon is entering into a master’s degree program this fall in reproductive physiology. Also welcoming you to our cattle operation as third generation supporters of the shorthorn cattle industry are Colin and Brandy’s other two children, Halle and Brodie, both hard working post secondary students and integral in the evolution of Schutz Cattle Company.
Schutz Cattle has put an emphasis on cow
families as well as structural and maternal integrity to create an end product that can be shown, but equally important, be a profit generating factory.
They have been a proud consignor of the 4’S Company Shorthorn Production Sale, which is the longest running shorthorn sale in Canada, since its inception forty four years ago and continue to market their genetics through this historic event each year as well as the Bred for Banners Heifer Sale showcasing exclusively Schutz Cattle Company seedstock.
Currently, the Schutz family are utilizing both the knowledge and the genetics from the past forty plus years, to continue to grow, adapt and promote the purebred Shorthorn sector.
Our hope is that you are able to clearly see the result of our refinements and successes. The experience of producing top notch animals, supporting many other cattle operations and connecting with countless exceptional individuals in the beef cattle industry have resulted in animals that we
are very proud of.
Schutz Family
Bishop Farms | Killiam, AB
Bishop Farms is a fourth-generation Shorthorn operation with the fifth generation becoming more involved every day. Our operation consists of a Shorthorn-based cow herd in which we also produce Shorthorn Plus and high percentage Shorthorn cattle. We are located at Killam in East Central Alberta.
Established in 2021, our herd has been built from some of the foundation females that were produced at Creekside Shorthorns (Wendy Bishop & Family) and can be traced back to the Gyaglen Shorthorn prefix of Tom Bishop. Cow families are extremely important to us, and we are highly selective, emphasizing structurally sound, great uddered, easy fleshing females with lots of volume. Through an embryo transplant program, we have been putting together a herd of closely related females with fresh genetics that consistently produce offspring that have been accepted in both the purebred and commercial sectors of the beef industry.
Cows that thrive in their environment has become a focus as well as we have intensified our grazing management and strive to have our cow herd harvest their own feed year-round. While its never certain how much rain or sunshine a growing season will provide, our goal is to constantly improve the soil health and productivity of the land we own and manage through our grazing practices.

Lehmann Family
Saskvalley Shorthorns | Rosthern, SK
Saskvalley Stock Farm- The home half section has been in the family for over a hundred years. We have evolved from a typical 1940’s mixed farm, which included a small dairy, some beef cows and grain production, into a ranch that operates on about 4,000 acres of land with additional grazing leases for 400 cow/calf pairs. The ranch currently runs about 500 pairs and 250 yearlings every summer. 100 of these cow/calf pairs would be registered Shorthorns and the rest are commercial cows with a heavy Shorthorn influence. Each summer we breed about 500 cows and 150 yearling heifers. In fact, we probably turn out more Shorthorn bulls for breeding each year than any producer in North America.
Calving begins the last week in April and finishes at the end of June. 90% of the calves are born by the end of May. Our cows calve on carryover grass, with minimal supervision. Branding and vaccinating is
done in June and early July.
The cows come off summer pasture by the end of October. They will graze stubble and crop residue for a few weeks and then get turned into standing corn that is rotationally grazed with electric fence. The corn is our winter feed source. Some years it carries us through the entire winter; some years we must feed stored feeds for a few weeks. Calves are weaned at the end of November and go on a mixed ration of barley and corn silage. We produce all our stored feeds, mostly corn silage and barley, from our own cultivated acres. We also make hay on 300-400 acres of land. The steer calves are generally sold in February/March, but we are working towards pasturing all our calves as yearlings, and marketing them in the fall.
We select for genetics that will work in this kind of a production system (minimal supervision, cows grazing year-round). It requires moderate framed cows, with plenty
of depth, thickness and fleshing ability. Good udders, and sound feet and legs are a must have.
On the first Thursday in every April, we hold the “Who’s your Daddy” bull sale with our partners at Bell M and Muridale. Together we sell about 50 bulls each year through this sale. This event has allowed us to send our genetics all over North America, but our biggest customer continues to be our own commercial cow herd. Because of this, we continue to make genetic decisions based on what works in our environment, and in our production system.
Moellenbeck Family
Bell M Farms | Englefeld, SK
Bell M Farms is located in central Saskatchewan 90 miles east of Saskatoon or 120 miles north of Regina. Shorthorns have been raised on a commercial basis since the Moellenbeck’s moved onto this farm in the early 60’s. Through the involvement of their sons in 4-H in the mid 70’s, the first purebred heifers were purchased, and the herd has blossomed since then.
At the present time they are breeding 175 purebred females and 25 commercial Shorthorn females. The cattle are raised with the approach that they work for usrather than us working for them. The cattle must be able to survive in a harsh climate (-40 C or +35 C ), and do so on a marginal amount of feed.
Bell M Farms also has an extensive grain operation where wheat, canola & malt barley is grown. Oats and corn are also grown as forage for the cattle.
The Moellenbeck’s enjoy travelling around Canada with their cattle exhibiting at many fall shows concluding with Canadian Western Agribition. Bell M Farms is also very involved with the junior association by attending many of the national summer shows but also sponsoring the juniors’ events.
The Moellenbeck’s have been fortunate enough to raise several bulls that have left their mark across the globe. Bell M Foreman 30A was a bull that was Grand Champion at Agribition and made the Top 10 in the
Supreme, he continued to breed very impressive cattle. Bell M Guiness 17G was successfully used by Shadybrook in Quebec and by A.I. through Spry’s in Australia. Bell M Zirconium 53J and Bell M Stockmaster 2K are two bulls that are making a big impact in the breed.
They hold an annual bull sale, along with Saskvalley Shorthorns and Muridale Shorthorns, on the first Thursday of April at Saskatoon Livestock Sales. They are excited to welcome everyone to the farm and enjoy an afternoon of visiting!
Western Development Museum | Saskatoon, SK
The Western Development Museum in Saskatoon is a living history experience that immerses you in Saskatchewan’s heyday with its stunning 1910 Boomtown exhibit—an indoor main street featuring over thirty authentic buildings like a general store, blacksmith shop, dentist’s office, and one-room schoolhouse. You’ll learn how settlers carved a life from prairie sod in “Winning the Prairie Gamble,” which showcases replica structures like sod homes and displays the ingenuity required to thrive here . For machinery and motorheads, the Transportation and Agriculture galleries exhibit everything from horse-drawn carriages and steam tractors to vintage automobiles and early airplanes— highlighting how innovation shaped western life.

Bender Shorthorns | Neudorf, SK
Bender Shorthorns was started by Phillip & Glenn Bender in 1955. They had a few purebred cows prior to that, in March of 1955 Phillip Went to Regina Bull Sale and brought the Champion Shorthorn bull.
Breeding stock was added to the herd for local Shorthorn producers, the herd remaining small running 35 Purebred animals till the late 90’s.
We have exhibited Shorthorns across North America. Toronto Royal, Edmonton Farmfair, Calgary Stampede, NAILE Louisville, NWSS Denver, Agribition since the start in 1971 and are 1 of only a couple farms to have exhibited at every show one if the 54 shows. In 2000 Ryan came home for University and the farm had to expand, currently running 100 purebred Shorthorn females and cropping 4000 acres with another 500 acres in forage.
We host an online Bull & Female sale on the 4Th Saturday in March every year, with consignment form my sister and her family at Star P Farms.
We strive to produce cattle that work in the commercial industry, Solid Red with good weaning and yearling weights.

Birdtail Shorthorns | Rossburn, MB
Greetings from Birdtail Shorthorns!!
We are a family cattle ranch located in the beautiful Birdtail valley adjacent to Riding Mountain National Park. Although we always had commercial shorthorns, our first purebreds were purchased in 2001 and we have grown and evolved since then. Our herd is comprised mainly of purebreds but as our daughter and her husband raise Angus, we also have some cross-bred females as well.
Our landscape is hilly and rugged and our Shorthorns must be able to thrive without pampering. Thus good structure and feet are essential. Calves are raised on milk and grass until weaned and then hand fed to promote growth but also longevity. All feed is grown here on our ranch. We also employ 4 beautiful Livestock guardian dogs to protect our herd from predators.
Notable sires we have used in the past
include Saskvalley Ultra 12J, Eionmor Ultra, Eionmor Ideal, Eionmor Piper, Eionmor Masterpiece, Ready Go, Four Point Major and Glenford Gus.
We look forward to hosting all participants on the World Shorthorn Conference /Tour!!
We would like to welcome the World Shorthorn Conference participants to Poplar Park Farm.
Our farm was founded by Corbett and Evelyn Brown in 1907. There has always been Shorthorn cattle here. When their son, my uncle, Norman Brown joined the farm, purebred Shorthorns were added in about 1940.
Some influential sires over the years have been Ridgeview Peter Pan, Kelburn Repeat Performance, Keith Park Riverhurst, Kemar Ranger, Poplar Park Mist 4R, JT Titan, Goldwin Burwash, Saskvalley Transport, Saskvalley Boston, RT Diamond Cutter, and JT President. Also, we have utilized AI and embryo transplants. Some notable AI sires have been used from around the world, from Ireland - Highfield Irish Mist, Duke of Dublin and Sandy Creek Ivor. From Australia – Lone Pine Grand Society, Moombi Powerplay, Sprys Cyclone and The Grove Kookabura. We have used many US bulls, including Byland Ironclad, who we are using this breeding season. Also Crooked Post Stockman has made a

great contribution, using several sons and grandsons.
We also place importance on cow families, including the Clippers, Muffins, Goldies, Florences, Daisys, Betsys, Heroines, Promises and several more.
The farm is presently operated by John and Susan Thompson along with Russell and Jess Thompson.
We also do exhibiting with our cattle. Some of our successes have been Poplar Park Ranger 36N, Reserve Grand Champion at the Toronto Royal, Poplar Park Western Mist, who we sold to Charlie Campbell. Western Mist was Grand Champion at Agribition. We have also had several Champions at Brandon Ag-Ex. All four of our kids; William, Sean, Russell and Evelyn were active in 4H and Junior Shorthorn Activities, and now our grandchildren are in 4-H.
We look forward to hosting you and showing you our herd!
Douglas Testing Station | Carberry, MB
Founded by 3 progressive cattleman, Frank R. Hay, Christopher S. Thomas and Ernest Donn Mitchell, the Douglas Bull & Female Development Center first opened its gates in 1964-65. In its infancy it was known as the Sire Indexing Centre and yet most referred to it as the Douglas Test Station and now the Station.
In its first year 113 bulls from 4 different breeds were part of test. Shorthorn, Angus, Hereford and Charolais. That year the high selling bull of all breeds was a Shorthorn consigned by the Gordon Bros. of Souris and sold to Searle Farms at East Selkirk, MB for $1600. The popularity of the Station
Jeff & Grayson Ross
grew to operating at its capacity of 500 bulls with a total of 12 other breeds in the early years. Douglas was the place to performance test bulls and producers were eager to be a part of it. Bringing bulls together under a controlled set of management conditions gave the cattlemen an opportunity to determine the rate of gain performance of their bulls and select top performers. To this day, evaluation of the cattle remains a primary objective for the Station and with time new tools have been added to the battery of performance indicators.
Today the Station markets approx 125
head of bulls and heifers at their annual production sale in March. Cattle arrive in early October with official “test” beginning later that month and running for 112 days. The Manager and his team coordinate all preparation of Sale animals for picturing and videos along with catalogue and sale. The Station is your one stop for the development, marketing and sale of breeding stock and the Shorthorn breed continues to be a mainstay in the yearly offering of quality bulls and heifers.

The Central Fire Station in Brandon, Manitoba—now known as The Firehall Event Venue—is a beautifully restored heritage building that was originally constructed in 1911 in a striking blend of Chateauesque and Italianate architectural styles. Located in downtown Brandon on Princess Avenue, this red-brick landmark features a dramatic hose-drying tower, wrought-iron balconies, steep dormered roofs, and massive fire-engine doors—each detail preserved to honor its storied past. After serving the city as its main fire hall for nearly a century, the building was thoughtfully transformed into a premiere event venue beginning in 2021, welcoming weddings, corporate gatherings, and private celebrations in a space that merges historic grandeur with modern amenities . Its two distinct event spaces—the spacious main hall and the intimate “Hayloft”—offer elegant settings complete with chandeliers, built-in audio support, Wi-Fi, bars, and full catering options. New ownership plans to expand access within the building and even introduce on-site brewery offerings, adding fresh energy and local flavor to any event hosted there. Whether you’re planning a memorable wedding, a milestone celebration, or a professional function, visiting this venue means stepping into a living piece of Brandon’s civic history while enjoying a uniquely atmospheric and flexible space.

Don Jack
Coldstream Farm | Flesherton, ON
Our first shorthorns arrived in 2013. My Grandpa had Shorthorns and a good friend of my parents, Emerson Clarke, was the herdsman for Scotsdale Shorthorns so there was going to be consequences if I chose a different breed!
I had operated a beef bull test station for Ontario, so performance testing was already in my mind. We started with 8 bred heifers and this was going to be a hobby that let me relax from a fairly busy real estate career of selling farms and country properties, but the hobby grew. First in cattle numbers, then in land and finally in the hiring of a herdsman. This spring we will breed around 65 females plus a few embryos in recipients.
We show the cattle nationally, but the main focus is balanced EPD’s. We’ve been fortunate to have exhibited Champions at major shows for a few years now. Some influential herd sires have been
Crooked Post Sawyer 1A, Coldstream Buster 7B, Waukaru Pendleton 0061, Byland Ironclad 1M8 and most recently, PVF Diamond 101M. We are raising a good young bull calf by Sprys Heritage P73 with hopes that he might also become a sire here as well. We use AI and embryos as well.
An online production sale in October offers heifers and sire prospects as well as semen. We use sexed semen as we don’t have a huge herd and this helps with heifer numbers.
We enjoy hosting Shorthorn events like your visit to the farm and try to support events for the juniors of our breed. It’s never time wasted to visit over Shorthorn cattle and we hope you enjoy your time with us. Welcome to Coldstream.
Dale Asser
Hill Haven Shorthorns | Duntroon
ON
Hill Haven Shorthorns celebrated its 25th anniversary last year with a big party at the farm. Bob Meldrum and Dale Asser, two bonafide city dwellers purchased Hill Haven Farm in Duntroon, Ontario near the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay and just an hour north of Toronto as a getaway from the city. Not long after they began their shorthorn journey with the purchase in 1999 of two Shorthorn/Lincoln Red cross cow/calf pairs. The herd grew quickly as their love of Shorthorns consumed their life and they moved fulltime to the farm. From the earliest days they concentrated on form and function which more specifically meant selecting and breeding for flawless, balanced structure, exceptional mobility, consistency in progeny, maternal traits, longevity, docile easy to manage temperament and of course the standard must haves which are great feet and udders, milk quality and calving ease. Additionally, show ring appeal is always a factor to be considered. These goals persist to this day and as all my fellow breeders know, the elusive perfect shorthorn is still out there to be created but Hill Haven is undaunted in that pursuit. Sadly, Bob passed away in 2020 but Hill Haven’s
longtime herdsman, Matthew Hargrave, alongside Dale has taken on the original and enduring values, goals and objectives of Hill Haven.
Hill Haven’s legacy will be the Sierra/ Breathless cow family which has dominated their program for almost 20 years and became a quintessential Foundation Female Shorthorn Cow Family. Hill Haven’s annual Selection Sale in October is always highlighted by this family’s offerings. There are too many standout family members to mention all but highest on the legacy list are Hill Haven Sierra 7S, her daughter Hill Haven Breathless 13U and her granddaughter Hill Haven Breathtaker 35Y. Perhaps most well known is Hill Haven FireStorm 28C, Breathtaker’s natural son,and number one bull at Hill Haven who consistently sires exceptional progeny and whose semen sells across North America. Both Breathtaker and FireStorm each had multiple Grand Champion performances at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto and Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. FireStorm was also All Breeds Bull Champion at the Royal in 2017, the only shorthorn bull to achieve that award.
That same year he was Champion of the World Shorthorn Bull. A further testament to his quality is the Champion of the World Shorthorn Female in 2024, Hill Haven Lily’s Dream 7G sired by FireStorm. It would be a mistake to not mention that there are two additional foundation cow families at Hill Haven, and they are the Veronas and the Lilys both of which are challenging for top spot.
Breeding, managing selling and showing shorthorns is only one aspect of Hill Haven’s overall shorthorn plan. Bob and Dale never forgot or took for granted the the vast knowledge, time and help so generously passed on by fellow breeders in the early days of Hill Haven Shorthorns. Hill Haven prides itself in paying forward knowledge and assistance to new breeders and particularly provides support to and hands on involvement with junior cattle organizations in Canada. Now it is Dale and Matthew who are working to ensure the next generation of shorthorn breeders are as enthusiastic and committed as Bob, Dale and Matthew.
