Welcome to the HCM Summit 2025 from the whole team at HCM, Fit Tech and Spa Business magazines. Thank you for coming. We deeply value this opportunity to gather our community of stakeholders, operators, suppliers and experts together in one place to share ideas, knowledge and inspiration and to do business.
This year we’ve again sold out the summit and are welcoming delegates from over 20 different countries to London. It’s our passionate hope that you’ll enjoy the day and find it useful.
One of the primary reasons for launching the event has been to support the sector in nurturing the next generation of leaders and I’m delighted to see so many top operators have brought their teams along to network and learn.
We’re at an interesting stage in our development, as many of the industry’s incredible founders are now retiring or moving to take on advisory roles and passing the baton to new colleagues – many from outside the sector.
We’re blessed to have a wealth of talented new leaders coming into the industry with
Many top operators have brought larger teams to the summit this year, to network and learn as part of their training and development
fresh energy and new skills and perspectives and this is helping us raise our game.
Sharing the stage during the summit this year will be a strong lineup of these new leaders, along with a number of seasoned veterans, as we work to achieve that crossover and the transfer of skills and knowledge. It’s vital we welcome and involve the next generation, so they can deliver continuity, ensuring we don’t lose the experience gained by our founders, instead using this as a launch pad to greater things.

Launching a national health assessment programme with Nuffield, I learned the true nature of teamwork and how a new product or service can only thrive if it aligns with the culture in which it operates.
Leaving a successful business during COVID to go out on my own I learned that following purpose – even without a clear plan – leads to a greater sense of fulfilment.
Flying home from holiday to take up a keynote talk at the O2. I learned to take a risk. Ask outright for an opportunity and seize it when it presents itself – even if daunting. That talk led to me becoming part of High Performance and three series of The Energy Equation podcast.

Sophie Lawler was appointed CEO of Total Fitness in June 2018, bringing 25 years’ industry experience to the company where she began her fitness journey in 2001
Lawler is known for her people-powered approach and passion for leadership, going so far as to deliver Total Fitness’ leadership programme personally to team members at all levels of the business.
Since 2020, she has also stepped into a more public role, highlighting the essential nature of the sector through 300 media appearances across broadcast, print and digital, including nationally on BBC Breakfast, BBC News, Sky Business and Bloomberg, reaching audiences of over 900 million people.

She has received national recognition for her success in transforming Total Fitness, with a string of accolades since 2020, including being an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist 2025.
Expertise Company culture and growth
In 2018 I was between jobs and by happenstance, met the outgoing CEO of Total Fitness and offered to support him as a consultant.
A great friend asked (with incredulity) why I hadn’t asked for the CEO’s job instead of an assignment... I couldn’t answer the question. Being scared of failure isn’t enough of a reason not to reach out. I made the call to the owners and they wondered why I’d waited so long.
Nobody tells you what the CEO job is and you don’t get a job description, but there was a moment I knew for sure.
I was delivering a leadership programme and it transpired that one of the delegates had never travelled outside their home town alone or spoken in front of strangers in their 50+ years. By the end they could hold the room and speak unprompted. Their life had got bigger. I knew then that being a CEO is a duty of service.
Speaking at a recent event, I was introduced not by job title, but by reputation. It was the moment I realised I had something to say that mattered. I spoke unscripted with clarity and lucidity and learned that confidence is an active practise and valuable (for you and those you lead) when you achieve it. Read more

At my first big aerobic convention I was given a chance to lead the last class and got the room to boil. It was a huge success and changed the course of my life. It was the sweet taste of success that made me braver and bolder and helped me move to greater heights in the industry.
When I graduated with a masters in business economics, the normal route was to go into PWC, McKinsey and the like, but I got an offer to be part of launching Sweden’s first fitness chain, SATS and chose with my heart instead of my head. It was the best decision I ever made. I learned to do what I’m passionate about.
I was part of building Raison d’Etre and we went through tough years during the financial crisis and were close to bankruptcy. I learned I’m not defined by what I do, but by who I am and who my friends are.

My beautiful team took pay cuts and we powered through and it taught me to always be humble and never forget how it was at the bottom. Three years later I sold Raison d’Etre for a very good price to a private equity company in New York.

He went on to drive the repositioning of Fitness First UK and Germany (2017- to date) as CEO, by investing in people, simplifying processes, modernising the product, nurturing community and renovating the clubs.
These strategic moves lifted the companies to new levels under his leadership, enabling further growth.
Over the last four years Seibold and his team have built LifeFit Group into a multi-brand organisation by acquiring best-in-class gym chains and the rights to leading boutique fitness brands.
They led the company through the COVID crisis, rebuilding revenues and increasing the portfolio through mergers and acquisitions and in 2024 Seibold led the sale of the group by Oaktree Capital Management to Waterland Private Equity Investments. Early on in my career, my father taught me that you don’t need to be the best in the room but you need to have the best team with you in order to succeed
He built an admirable career on this foundation and the advice has always served me well too.
People are complex and want and need development.
In the early 2000s we developed the analogy of people as being like planes –they have equally important ‘business’ and ‘personal’ dimensions to their lives and they have a body and a mind (the cockpit).
Ensuring those four aspects are in balance and nurtured is vital if each member of the team is to become the best version of themselves
Ultimately moments of failure are the times when you learn the most in life, however challenging they can be.
At these times, the ways you react show your teams what you’re really made of.
I’m fortunate to have made many mistakes, so I have also been grateful to have learned a lot.

My role in South Korea, with a mandate to develop a strategic plan for Korea Telecom Directory, was formative. The combination of the cross-culture experience with the competence of the team at the company and the exoticism of the market made it a life-changing experience.
The mandate to strengthen the company culture at VivaGym, back in 2016 and the acceleration of the growth, 2017 – 2019 were extremely inspiring.
The roadshow with Providence Equity Partners and the acceleration of expansion in 2024 – where 120 gyms were incorporated to the estate (115 acquisitions and five openings) – were tremendously demanding, while also delivering plenty of takeaways.

Our fully managed “farming as a service” provides a valuable amenity and a platform for conversations about wellbeing, nutrition and

Since its inception back in 2013, KitBrix has evolved to be one of Britain’s favourite outdoor sports luggage brands.
KitBrix has evolved into a full range of problemsolving storage gear. Its modular, weather-tough bags are designed to organise kit, protect it from mud, spray and rain, simplify transitions and travel, and let you focus on the sport, not the bag.
One of the signature features is a built-in ‘wet/ dry locker’ concept. Whether it’s fresh kit on one side, damp kit on the other, or muddy boots and clean kit separated, KitBrix bags help avoid the dreaded soggy mess or post-session scramble.
But KitBrix isn’t just about bags, it’s about gear that supports serious training, smart transitions and active lifestyles across all levels.
Following on from the success of the original iconic bag, KitBrix has developed a range of problem-solving products designed with the adventurer and outdoor sports enthusiast in mind.
What’s Next? Compact vendingfriendly accessories line
To build on its core luggage range, KitBrix is launching a compact line of gym-perfect accessories, designed with clubs and members in mind. These accessories aim to solve problems clubs routinely face: member convenience, dispensing from vending or offering higher-perceived value items on-site that can be used for reward, recognition or referral pay-backs, reinforcing
membership value and relationships while solving the redemption connection and adding a premium experience and new income stream to your facility. The range will include:
n A sweat-dry bag that handles post-training or swim kit, separating wet from dry.
n A micro fast-drying compact towel for gym and pool sessions.
n A change/hygiene mat – ideal for bodyweight or stretching zones, or for keeping floors clean and dry.
n Daily essentials such as a wash-bag and amenities pouch – those little items people often forget but appreciate once you’ve supplied them.

We believe recovery should be as intelligent and measurable as performance.
Orca is the result of that belief – born from the lived experience of founder Mirjana Prokic, who for 11 years endured insomnia, back pain and burnout while leading global businesses. Her curiosity turned to science, and science turned into truth: the body can reset and recover faster when posture, motion and sound work in harmony.
Orca incliner isn’t simply a pod, it’s a fully integrated recovery platform that combines: n Forward-tilting posture, derived from NASA’s body-neutral research, reducing spinal strain and restoring respiratory ease n Gentle rhythmic rocking to synchronise vestibular cues, accelerate parasympathetic recovery, and improve memory consolidation even through a short power nap n Psychoacoustic soundscapes, co-created with neuroscientists and composers, that guide the brain into deep restorative states
In just 20 minutes, Orca delivers the physiological equivalent of 2–3 hours of traditional rest, all with validated metrics (heart rate, breathing, HRV and more).
It’s designed for workplaces, health and wellness centres, sports environments, travel hubs and hybrid health spaces. We’ve partnered with experts at Sheffield Hallam University Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and King’s College London to validate performance
gains. Early results show 10 per cent faster heartrate recovery, 6 per cent slower breathing rates and improved user wellbeing, even in healthy individuals.
Our granted patents protect the combined posture + motion + audio system – no competitor can offer this synthesis.
For spa and wellness operators, Orca offers a breakthrough proposition: evidence-based wellness that delivers quantifiable performance results. It’s a new era of wellness, where recovery meets measurable performance.

As fitness technology evolves, so too do user expectations – demanding experiences that are not only smarter, but also more elegant, efficient and seamlessly integrated into their lifestyles.
The Smart Gym stands at the forefront of this transformation, representing the next generation of connected fitness. A mirror designed to complement both luxury and commercial environments, it offers a complete training solution without compromising on space or aesthetic appeal.
At its core, the Splan Smart Gym replaces traditional weight stacks and bulky gym equipment with digitally-controlled resistance, delivering precision, safety and performance through a simple touchscreen mirror interface.
Users can select their exercise, adjust resistance from 2kg to 100kg and train across multiple movement patterns, all as effortlessly as using a smartphone.
Every feature has been engineered to make professional-quality fitness more accessible, engaging and inspiring. Unlike conventional equipment, the mirror introduces advanced training modes including eccentric, isokinetic, and fluid resistance which are typically reserved for elite athletes and rehabilitation facilities.
Built-in guided video tutorials and realtime feedback provide users with confidence, ensuring correct form and continuous motivation throughout every session. It’s not just a workout
tool; it’s an intelligent personal training partner that adapts to every individual’s goals and ability. For gyms, spas, hotels, and wellness spaces, the Smart Gym redefines what a fitness installation can be. Its minimal footprint and refined design mean it can enhance guest suites, wellness areas, or compact gym spaces while delivering the full functionality of a complete training system. When not in use, it remains an elegant mirror, effortlessly blending into any environment.
The Smart Gym is where innovation meets sophistication, combining form, function, and technology in a way that inspires movement and elevates every environment it inhabits. Step into the future of fitness, where a full gym experience – and more – exists within the elegance of a single mirror.

Gym Twin by TwinLabs.ai gives you unprecedented insights into your members and gym
Imagine knowing exactly:
n Which equipment is underused (and where to redeploy it)
n When spaces are empty (and how to convert them)
n What members actually do (not what surveys claim)
The TwinLabs Gym Twin lets you know exactly that. You can be up and running, getting those insights in less than a week, with no additional trackers, sensors or other kit needed. Sounds like magic? We simply plug into your CCTV network, run our GDPR-compliant Vision AI magic and give you a detailed view on how your members use your equipment and spaces.
You’ll quickly understand:
n If you’ve got the cardio vs strength balance right (hint: across the industry we’re seeing robust, sustained growth in the use of functional areas)
n Your most popular equipment locations (we invariably see the busiest piece of cardio is the treadmill with the best view of a TV)
n How busy that stretching zone really is (often busier than your staff think)
Imagine your next management meeting with the whole team focussed on how to improve the utilisation of your space rather than voicing opinions
as to what piece of equipment is more popular. Make decisions based on real data, not anecdotes, occasional surveys or because “that’s how many pieces we put in all our medium-sized gyms”.
Measuring what’s used in each gym allows you to take a localised approach. No more one-size-fits-all. You can then make targeted investments based on what your members want to see changed. If you can tune your offer to what your members value, you can grow without necessarily adding more clubs.
Planning a renewal? Get hard data to back your equipment mix decisions. No need to rely on equipment suppliers – they don’t know YOUR members. In addition, TwinLabs.ai integrates with your management platform, giving you an understanding of exactly what your membership demographic uses and which facilities they value. Want to join the growing number of gyms using Gym Twin to get ahead? Reach out to us on https://www.twinlabs.ai/contact

The World Leisure Organization (WLO), established in 1952, is a global nonprofit committed to promoting leisure as a fundamental human right that enhances quality of life and fosters community wellbeing. It’s been a partner of HCM magazine for 30 years.
Operating internationally, WLO offers initiatives such as the World Leisure Congress, Centers of Excellence, Communities of Excellence, Youth Ambassador programmes, position paper and research publications. These efforts unite academics, practitioners, and policymakers to advance the value of leisure in society, focusing on education, advocacy, and collaboration to address global challenges such as inequality, social justice, and health disparities.
In a world of rapidly shifting challenges and diverse needs, contemporary leisure and recreation are evolving significantly. WLO recognises that leisure is not merely a source of relaxation or entertainment, but a dynamic tool to address key societal issues such as mental health and inequality. By working together with WLO, we can create innovative strategies to ensure leisure fosters wellbeing, resilience, and adaptability across cultures and regions. These collaborations are essential for ensuring leisure remains accessible and inclusive for everyone.
WLO has been reimagining the future of leisure at the recent 18th World Leisure Congress in Breda, Netherlands, (25-28 August).
Under the theme of ‘Leisure for a Better Society’, WLO is aiming to craft solutions that meet the evolving demands of our time, addressing global issues through the power of leisure. To explore collaboration, visit www.worldleisure.org or connect with us at: secretariat@worldleisure.org.
