Refined ingredients. Rebellious spirit. Remarkably welcoming vibe.

Hello friends,

After hiking a very vertical 2-mile trail to Scenic Hot Springs near Skykomish, Washington, my sister and I tiptoed down the final stretch to a clearing where two natural rock pools and two smaller temporary soaking pools awaited our weary bodies. We soaked, snacked and thanked the universe for our good fortune before hiking back down. Famished, we found LouSkis Deli and ate cheeseburgers on the picnic table on the bank of the South Fork of the Skykomish River. The place was run by women and the chef looked me in the eye and smiled when she handed me my burger basket. Well, that was the best meal I've had in months. The bun was soft, not fussy, the lettuce and tomato were fresh, not afterthoughts. The beef patty was loose at the edges and cooked to perfection. Magnifique! And yes, the fact that I'd just hiked and soaked the day away, building an epic appetite made the burger better. And yes, dining with my sister makes everything taste more delicious. She is funny and laughs at my stupid jokes. She is intelligent and makes me feel important. We are extremely compatible, but not the same.

And, we both devoured our cheeseburgers that day, our best meal of the year.

In this annual FOOD and BEV issue, we pull up a chair to some newer spots and classic favorites. Enjoy the photography and interviews and don't forget to tip your servers generously!

Bon Appétit!

A Love Letter to Home

Purity Coffee and family memories are born here.

Purity Coffee is a health-focused coffee company dedicated to producing the world’s purest, highest-quality coffee. Founded on the principle that coffee should be as beneficial for the body as it is enjoyable to drink, Purity Coffee goes beyond taste by prioritizing health benefits, using only beans sourced from regenerative farms, and employing a meticulous roasting process to maximize antioxidants while minimizing toxins.

Purity Coffee is the first brand globally to position itself as a nutrient-conscious coffee producer, committed to delivering a product free from mold, pesticides and contaminants. As a four-time member of the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies, Purity Coffee is recognized as a leader in the health and wellness space, reshaping how consumers view their daily cup of coffee.

Founders, Amber and Andrew Salisbury live in Buckhead and to celebrate our FOOD issue, we asked them to honor the place where their coffee business bloomed: their Buckhead home.

OUR STORY ON WEST WESLEY ROAD

In 2006, we moved to Atlanta, drawn by its vibrant energy and its status as an international hub, making it easy for us to travel for work. Shortly after settling in, we got married and welcomed our daughter, Leela, into the world. When Leela was just eight months old, we found our forever home on West Wesley Road. We bought it from the Cunninghams, and over the past 18 years, it has been more than just a house; it’s been the heart of our family.

This home has witnessed the birth of our dreams. It’s where Purity Coffee was founded, a company grounded in health and wellness. And it’s where Sacred Cups came to life, a brand born of ritual, reverence and indigenous wisdom. We’ve raised not just our daughter here, but also our two little dogs. All of our ideas have truly flourished within these walls.

If Andrew were a coffee, he’d be Purity - scientific, structured, focused on helping people live healthier lives. If I were a coffee, I’d be Sacred Cups - guided by story, ceremony and connection to ancestral wisdom. Together, our brands and our lives form a kind of sacred yin and yang: different, but deeply complementary.

Sacred Cups, in particular, reflect a feminine energy that has been nurtured within these walls. We partner with women coffee farmers and honor indigenous grandmothers and matriarchal lineages in our storytelling. It’s a brand that celebrates reflection, reverence, and regenerative legacy.

This house has been our grounding place, the container for all the love, laughter, and late-night dreams we’ve shared. We’re so grateful to have called it home.

LIFE TASTES BETTER AT CORSO

When most people think of senior living, they imagine buffets and bland dining halls. But at Corso Atlanta, meals look more like what you’d find in Buckhead’s top restaurants: candlelit dinners, chefdriven menus and bistros buzzing with energy. In a city proud of its food scene, Corso is quietly carving out its own niche.

This ultra-luxury residence is redefining what it means to age intentionally. For Corso, food isn’t just fuel—it’s culture, hospitality and connection.

From its inception, Corso set out to break the mold. Instead of one main dining hall, residents can choose from multiple restaurant concepts, each with its own identity.

At the helm of the culinary design is Executive Chef Robbie Pacheco, who is very intentional in each menu that he creates.

“When I curate menus at Corso, I think about each space itself, the aesthetic for each individual eatery,” Executive Chef Robbie Pacheco says. “Each space has its own design and personality, so it helps me to distinguish the style and genre.”

And, this approach goes far beyond the food.

“Every time a resident or guest enjoys a meal in one of our restaurants, I want them to feel as though they just left one of the most memorable dining experiences in their life,” he says.

A LOOK AT THE RESTAURANTS AT CORSO ATLANTA:

The Galerie: The grand restaurant. Think candlelit dinners, white tablecloths and refined service, feeling more like a private supper club than senior living. Chef Pacheco’s menu is packed with à la carte options and brings an elevated approach to a large variety of classics. “We respond to our residents and guests by bringing new additions and refinements to the menu each month,” Pacheco remarks.

Le Marche: A vibrant and bustling French-inspired bistro that is a social hub for morning coffee, light lunches and pastries from Atlanta’s favorite Alon’s Bakery.

The Creperie: A favorite for all. This candy shop-esque retreat is a whimsical spot serving locally sourced ice cream and desserts and is beloved by visiting grandchildren or anyone with an early-morning sweet tooth. Here, you will also find unique flower

arrangements from Terry Furuta’s Flowers of Giverny boutique placed around the tables and décor to add to the experience.

BEYOND THE PLATE

Food and beverage at Corso Atlanta go further than just the restaurants. For example, Food and Beverage Director Kyle Lashley curates private wine dinners and tastings at The Overlook Lounge, which is the home of their main bar. One recent program transported residents to Provence with regional pours and pairings.

“Many of our residents and guests have traveled the world,” Lashley says. “By revisiting those regions and their wines, we celebrate not just taste, but memory and legacy.”

WHAT’S NEXT

Corso Atlanta is already planning its next courses. Slated to break ground later this year, the expansion will introduce two new, unique restaurant venues. One is an Italian restaurant that will feature a grand woodfire grill for fresh pizzas and a menu entirely curated by the Executive Chef Robbie Pacheco. Alongside the Italian eatery will be a café-market hybrid created through a local partnership. The Corso Atlanta expansion will also introduce 100 new residences.  Corso’s culinary growth mirrors the brand’s larger expansion. With new residences underway in Druid Hills, Chevy Chase, Tysons, Philadelphia, and Manhattan, Corso is positioning itself not just as senior living, but as a hospitality-driven luxury and lifestyle brand.

Ben's Friends brings together members of the food and bev industry who are struggling.

’sFriendsfounders

PEOPLE POWER

Grant Hurless of Oddbird Non-Alcoholic Wine and Jess Gamble, chef de cuisine at KR Steakbar, have a standing date every Monday morning. With multiple years of sobriety and hospitality experience between them, they lead the local chapter of Ben’s Friends.

Ben’s Friends is a support group for members of the food and beverage industry. Founded in 2016 by hospitality veterans Steve Palmer and Mickey Bakst, the mission of Ben’s Friends is to offer hope, fellowship and a path forward to anyone who struggles with substance abuse and addiction. The organization is named in honor of Ben Murray, a chef who took his own life in 2016 after struggling with alcoholism.

Ben’s Friends models acceptance and gratitude, and though unaffiliated with AA or NA, these organizations share an important principle: the only thing you need to bring to a meeting is the desire to stop drinking or using. Ben’s Friends provides a safe haven for workers in an industry that has one of the highest rates of substance abuse in the country.

Ben
Steve Palmer and MickeyBakst

By coming together, starting a dialogue and acknowledging that substance abuse often cannot be overcome in isolation or by willpower alone, Ben’s Friends hopes to write a new chapter in the lives of food and beverage professionals across the country.

“Back in September 2018, I turned to Ben’s Friends when I was trying to regulate my drinking, and I haven’t had a drink since. What I discovered was more than just a support group, it was a community,” says Grant. “Ben’s Friends is a judgment-free zone where people in and around the restaurant industry can come together, be honest about their struggles and know they’ll be met with compassion rather than criticism. It’s about friendship, conversation and connection -  no one should have to navigate the challenges of substance use and sobriety on their own.”

What started as one meeting in Charleston, SC has grown to a community of 20+ in-person and 15 online meetings, further fostering communities and meeting people where they are.

The Atlanta chapter, founded in 2021 and re-established in Fall 2024, meets weekly on Mondays at 11 AM at Pricci. Since its founding, the group has created a judgment-free, anonymous forum where chefs, servers, bartenders and others in the restaurant industry can come together, share openly and find strength in connection.

Meetings provide a place for honest conversation, encouragement and accountability, reminding members that they are not alone in their journey.

Relationships and Careful Sourcing Taste Best

Word of Mouth Restaurants

When Chef Stephen Herman met cattle farmer, Andrew Whitney, they hit it off. Herman admired the way Whitney and his crew at Black Hawk Farms honor the process. Their cattle are raised slowly on a Kentucky farm, every step in the process fine-tuned to impart the perfect balance of flavor and marbling. As a three-generation family of row croppers with expertise in Agronomy and Beef Science, the Black Hawk Farms family began breeding cattle over 50 years ago. From practicing soil preservation to recycling water for irrigation, to composting waste for fertilizer, they have spent years perfecting conservation methods on the Kentucky farm.

At Arnette’s Chop Shop, where Chef Herman reigns, you can find this fine beef on the menu. “We use Black Hawk Farms for two key items: the ground beef in our burger and the chuck tenders for our Wagyu carpaccio. I met Andrew Whitney through a friend, and we hit it off—good people raising cattle the right way,” says Herman.

“Their program is consistent, humane and focused on quality, which shows up in the flavor and texture on the plate. From time to time, we’ll run other Black Hawk cuts as specials when they have something beautiful we want to share with guests.”

Sourcing produce is equally important. To Herman, it’s all about relationships. “We’ve worked with many of our farmers since the early Haven days and continue to add new partners who share our standards,” he says. “We buy local whenever it’s at its best, and we stay in constant conversation about what’s peaking. It’s simple: taste, trust and consistency.”

Fall brings the good stuff: squash (delicata, kabocha), beets, hearty greens like kale and chard, and cool-weather fruit— apples and pears. Diners will see these seasonal superstars show up roasted, braised and brightened with citrus and vinegar to balance the richness of the steaks.

The classics are also in full bloom.

Potatoes (from silky whipped potatoes

to crispy fries), creamed corn, broccoli with parmesan fonduta, grilled asparagus, roasted baby carrots, and a mix of roasted Ellijay mushrooms are on the menu. “They’re straightforward, technique-driven sides that play well with steak,” notes owner Michel Arnette who takes pride in every dish that comes out of the kitchens at all Word of Mouth restaurants that include Chop Shop, Valenza, HAVEN, and Vero.

“We put in the work—sourcing thoughtfully, buying from people we know and handling ingredients with care the moment they hit our kitchen. Those partnerships run both ways; our purveyors look out for us, and we showcase their best. That effort is why the food tastes the way it does, and our guests feel the difference,” Arnette adds.

Dry Aging 101 with Chef Stephen Herman

Dry aging is equal parts discipline and patience. We age whole subprimals in a dedicated cooler with controlled temperature, humidity and airflow. Over time, moisture evaporates and natural enzymes tenderize the meat while a protective rind forms on the outside. Flavors concentrate: at around 35 days you get a cleaner, beef-forward profile with light nuttiness; push toward 60 days and you’ll taste deeper umami with subtle mushroom and blue-cheese notes. We trim the exterior, cook with precision and let the age speak for itself.

GROWING Community

Livable Buckhead has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 4 Sustainable Materials Management program to launch an innovative urban composting initiative in the heart of Atlanta. The new program, BuckheadCOMPOSTS, will provide free composting services for 15 apartment and condo communities for one year -- along with support including technical assistance, education, tenant engagement campaigns and community events.

Livable Buckhead aims to reach 9,000 residents and divert more than 500,000 pounds of food waste from Georgia landfills over the next year.

Buckhead is uniquely positioned to lead by example. The metro Atlanta region contributes nearly 48% of all food waste in Georgia, and urban neighborhoods like Buckhead can create new efficiencies by concentrating composting pickup routes and engaging high-density communities.

“This initiative has a ripple effect,” said Livable Buckhead’s Denise Starling. “It builds collaboration between property managers, tenant and local businesses, while creating momentum that other neighborhoods can follow.”

“Livable Buckhead is setting the bar for what it means to build truly sustainable communities,” said Kat Nigro, COO at CompostNow.

BOTICA | BUCKHEAD

Chef Mimmo is spotlighting Empanadas filled with fire-roasted eggplant, creamy goat cheese, and a rich tomato sauce. A perfect pairing would be the Spicy Sandia Margarita crafted with Don Julio Blanco and fresh watermelon. Botica has become a true neighborhood favorite - a community-driven restaurant where chef-inspired dishes and handcrafted cocktails are served in a vibrant, playful atmosphere.

CHICO CANTINA | TOWN BROOKHAVEN

This season, guests can look forward to tamales stuffed with braised chicken mole, finished with salsa verde, salsa guajillo, and crema fresca. The Smoky Mango Margarita shaken with El Bandido Blanco and a rhubarb-ginger twist is as adventurous as it is refreshing and could complement the tamales and most anything on the menu. Though new to Town Brookhaven, Chico Cantina has quickly become a beloved gathering spot. Whether it’s cocktails at the bar, a lively family dinner, or a casual meal with coworkers, diners love the fun, welcoming vibe.

THE ASHFORD ON DRESDEN

We are introducing a new dish with Green Hill cheese from Sweet Grass Dairy, Thomasville, Georgia. (very close to our chef’s hometown.) The cheese is lightly warmed in the oven and served with local strawberries that have been preserved and toasted focaccia. One of the California Chardonnays from our wine list would be perfect. Our employees love it when we create new dishes for the menu, and they are the first to taste them. We always get comments about the vibe of The Ashford. It’s casual yet refined, with a warm and inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for a date night or simply connecting with friends.

ECCO BUCKHEAD

We are very excited to be working with fresh eggplants and turmeric, both of which grow locally here in Georgia. We are highlighting these ingredients on our Lamb Sirloin dish, which is marinated in sumac, and served with turmeric yogurt, charred eggplant and a pickled onion mint salad. Pair with wine like Venus Universal “Dido” Garnacha, from Spain or Grenache blend from the Southern Rhône like our Roumieux Cotes du Rhone. Non-alcoholic? Try our Limoncello Spritz, which would offer cooling contrast

against lamb and bright turmeric.  Regulars would say it feels personal here, like they’re not just customers but part of a larger family. And that’s the real differentiator— food is the currency, but connection is the reward.

BOONE’S RESTAURANT

Collards are a staple in fall. I braise them with a touch of brown sugar and apple cider vinegar, cooked down with bacon until they’re smoky and tender. I’ll roast parsnips, purée them, or fry them into chips for some crunch. Find butternut squash in a soup with yogurt and honey, folded into risotto, or pan-seared as a garnish.  And carnival cauliflower, which comes in purple, yellow, and green, is pan-seared to add great color to the plate. Roasted cauliflower leans sweet, so I go in the opposite direction for a pairing with something crisp and slightly bitter, like an Albariño, or even a creamy sour beer. Squash dishes usually carry a lot of flavor, so they pair best with a big wine such as a Cabernet or Bordeaux, especially from Paso Robles. Parsnip chips are playful, and I like them alongside our non-alcoholic Fall Swing, made with orgeat and cranberry. I think regulars would say Boone’s feels like home. It’s refined but still easygoing, with food that’s rooted in local ingredients and a patio that’s hard to beat. It has that classic clubhouse feel but feels like your own favorite find, even on a first visit.

OMAKASE TABLE

Sanma, also known as Pacific saury, is a long, sleek fish celebrated for its rich and full flavor. This fish is a staple in Japanese cuisine during autumn, as its flavor peaks when the weather cools. I serve it in a nigiri form and top it off with our in-house-made ginger and scallion paste. To enhance the umami flavor of the sanma, I recommend “Kiku-masamune jumai taru” sake. Also known as the whiskey lover’s sake. Or, I would recommend a dry Riesling and our N/A Paloma, featuring a touch of Thai basil, respectively. We provide our staff with a family meal every day. One of their favorites is undoubtedly the “Negitoro” (chopped fatty tuna with scallions hand roll). It’s not just one thing that makes us different; it’s everything combined. From the food, service and ambiance, we take pride in ensuring that we create the best experience for our guests from the moment they walk through the door until they leave.

Whether looking for something colorful and eye-catching or a piece that merges seamlessly into your surroundings, we offer a wide range of options on our site.
