Over the past few months, we seem to have been missing all the rain Hopefully by the time this newsletter is published we will get some It has been a month and a half since we have had any substantial rain We really have not watered anything except for the greens largely because the issue we have at the spillway and dam has worsened When the pond filled on the last rain event, I noticed it was going down quickly Upon further investigation I realized that the leak has turned into a free-flowing stream when the pond is full until it gets down to about two feet low. I brought this to the attention of the city, and they have passed it on to the engineering firm that is handling the overall project. They have done some investigations and are recommending temporary fixes until the major project starts. Hopefully, that will come soon, as this has been an ongoing issue for at least 3 to 5 years.
With it being dry outside, we have not been mowing as much grass and have started to cross some of our smaller projects for the winter off the list. We have replaced some obsolete perimeter heads that were installed around the putting green, 1 and 17 years ago. A new wire has been run from the breaker panel at 14 roadside to the bridge on 13 (the section from the bridge to the fan was replaced some years ago). Pine straw has been falling like crazy, so we have been blowing that up and making some new beds around trees on 8, 9, 12 and a few other areas in an effort to try to eliminate areas where trees outcompete the grass for water and we cannot establish grass. We also have replaced two electric valves for landscape irrigation around the pumphouse and the front entrance. The “small” jobs have not been easy work, as dry as the ground is, but it is good to have some of them behind us.
In the coming months we will be working on continuing to thin some trees out on both sides of 7 fairway, the left side of 9 tee box and hopefully the right side of 2 tee box in an effort to get some more sunlight in those areas and ultimately grow better grass for playability and to outcompete weeds We will also be going through the entire irrigation system and checking each head for necessary repairs I hope this message finds you all well! I look forward to seeing each of you around the course!
Regards,
Craig Clemmer
Wilson Country Club Superintendent
