Hayward Library holds Local Author Festival

● Gathering marks convergence of diversity and literacy

Stories from across the world came together at the Local Author Festival hosted by Hayward Public Library on Oct. 4. Authors, attendees and organizers alike worked together to create an environment that stimulated literary and personal growth.

Organizer Kat Tong talked about how the festival initially started as an idea in January and developed as the Hayward Library team began reaching out to Bay Area authors. “Many authors released books around the same time, so we were able to reach out to them with our application,” said Tong. The team values diversity in the authors they promote, which was evident in the booths presented.

Dr. Maria Ochoa, a retired professor in the departments of sociology and interdisciplinary sciences at San Jose State University, was selling four books, including her newest photo history books about Russell City. Through her writing, Dr. Ochoa aims to be the best writer she can be, while also teaching history in a nuanced way that highlights overlooked groups. “I see [writing] as an opportunity to grow as a person and to share it,” she said. “Maybe someone will be inspired.”

Another author present at the festival was Mary O’Connor. Her first full-length book, From Junkie to Judge, is a memoir about her struggle with addiction. “My goal is always to help people know there is a way forward,” said O’Connor. Aside from opinion pieces, O’Connor has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times and more. O’Connor’s book appealed to the vast variety of age groups present at the festival, since her book deals with themes of resilience and growth, which are common to all readers.

Many authors also attended the festival to network with others. Children’s book author Ruchi Shah has been going to local events like storytime readings at Banter Bookshop in Fremont. She saw the Local Author Festival as the perfect opportunity to meet with other writers and readers. Through networking, Shah hoped her book about climate literacy could eventually be integrated into local school curricula and libraries.

“It’s not every day you find an event like this in your backyard,” said author

Lisa Moore Ramée. She mentioned that Hayward, being an especially diverse city, gives her the perfect space to promote her books, which feature main characters of color.

While authors were eager to promote their books, attendees were excited to read them. Karen Sutton left the

event with a full tote bag of books to read. Sutton appreciated the amount of diversity amongst the authors and specifically the female representation. “I wish there were more books like this when I was younger,” she said. As a “bookaholic,” Sutton seeks out these events, and she felt the Hayward Local Author Festival truly served its purpose in shedding light on new authors and stories.

Throughout the festival, diversity was a common thread, allowing others to network amongst themselves and connect with a variety of readers. The Hayward Public Library hopes to continue this festival and publicize it further for upcoming years to get more unique stories for readers to explore.

FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 21, 2025

TRI-CITY STARGAZER

All Signs: When an outer planet changes signs, it’s a pivotal shift. It means we’re entering a new cycle for the next decade. Right now, all three outer planets are hovering at 0° or 1°—Pluto, Neptune and Uranus—which means the world is at a turning point of change at a global, local and personal level. So, if you feel overwhelmed by change— be reassured it’s not just “happening to you.” In different ways, we are all dealing with upheaval in our lives.

Aries the Ram (March 21-April 20):

This week relations with partners, spouses and close friends are warm and rewarding. On Monday, you’ll be staunch about defending your best interests about inheritances, banking, taxes, debt and shared property. Ironically, these are the same areas that will assume a greater importance for you in the next several weeks, as the Sun moves into one of your Money Houses, specifically, the one dealing with jointly-held property and estate issues. You might meet someone that produces some soul-searching or psychological self-inquiry.

Taurus the Bull (April 21-May 20):

This week the Sun moves opposite your sign to stay for the next four weeks. This happens once a year and when it does, it symbolizes that the Sun is as far away from you as it can get all year. Because the Sun represents energy, this means you will need more sleep in the next four weeks. However, this polarized position of the Sun is a blessing because it allows you to have greater objectivity in your closest relationships. This is not the time to go it alone. It’s an excellent time to consult experts.

Gemini the Twins (May 21-June 20): You might feel confused about a friend. Perhaps you’re disappointed in them? But are they aware of your disappointment? This subtle influence might bubble beneath the surface. Meanwhile this week, you’re gung-ho to work! On Monday, you’ll be handson in an aggressive way. Nevertheless, you will get a lot done! By midweek, the Sun will change signs, to stay for four weeks—motivating you to work, be productive, and be healthy and self-

directed. You want to be the best you can be!

Cancer the Crab (June 21-July 21):

Parents are involved more than usual with their kids now through physical activity, competitive sports or anything related to the arts—the theatre world or musical performances. Meanwhile, you’re putting fun and pleasure first! Many of you will redecorate where you live and enjoy entertaining family and friends. Others will slip away on vacations. It’s totally appropriate to put yourself first for the next four weeks because this is the one time of year when the celestial heavens are encouraging you to do what you want. Let yourself be free-spirited and eager for good times!

Leo the Lion (July 22-August 22):

This week the Sun joins Mercury and Mars to heighten your focus on home and family, especially if guests or renovations are creating turmoil. You’re ready to roll up your sleeves to fix things or do home repairs. Family discussions might take place. Fortunately, fair Venus is in your House of Communications making your dealings with your daily world lighthearted. In turn, you will have a greater appreciation of beauty in your everyday surroundings. Seek out the company of others. Incidentally, this is a good time to ask for a loan or financial support.

Virgo the Virgin (August 23-September 22):

Suddenly, you have places to go, things to do and people to see! You might also be more involved with friends, neighbors, relatives and business associates. You feel the need to talk to others, which is why you will seek out someone to share your ideas. However, be careful: both Mercury and Mars are in your House of Communications right now, which will make you identify strongly with your opinions and make you a tad argumentative. On the other hand, this is a great time for those of you in sales, marketing, writing and acting.

Libra the Scales (September 23-October 22):

Libra rules haute couture, which is why so many of you dress well. Shopping for clothes, and watching how others dress fascinates you. Good news! This is an excellent time to shop for wardrobe goodies. Meanwhile, this week, the Sun joins Mercury and Mars in your Money House to stay there for the next four weeks. (This is the only time all year this happens.) This heightens your involvement with money, movable property and cash flow. Now is the time to establish greater control of your life through your possessions.

Scorpio the Scorpion (October 23-November 21):

Chatty Mercury and fiery Mars are in your sign making you talkative. That’s why you’re keen to express your ideas.

On Wednesday, the Sun moves into your sign to stay for four weeks. (This can happen only once a year.) With the Sun in your sign, you will attract people and favorable situations. This is your chance to recharge your batteries for the rest of the year! That’s why this is the one time of year when your first duty is to yourself. If you don’t fulfill this duty, you’ll be of little use to anyone else.

Sagittarius the Archer (November 22-December 21):

Your personal year is ending. This means the next four weeks are like a time of limbo. That makes this the perfect time to ponder how well you are doing at the art of living? Why not set aside a few moments to think about what you want for yourself in the future? Take some time to jot down some goals because goals give you a clearer focus on what’s important. They also give you more clarity in decision-making and better control over your future. (You like to have a sense of purpose.)

Capricorn the Goat (December 22-January 19):

Life looks good with fair Venus at the top of your chart opening doors for you. You will attract people and situations that promote your good reputation. Bosses and authority figures are favorably inclined. Regardless of what you do for a living, someone will ask for your artistic advice. Some of you might fall in love with a boss or a teacher. Meanwhile, this is a popular time for you! You might be involved with younger people or competitive team work. This is a great time to set some goals to keep you focused.

Aquarius the Water Bearer (January 20-February 18):

For the next four weeks, the Sun is at the top of your chart, symbolically thrusting you in the limelight. This happens once a year and it means people admire you. They might offer you increased responsibilities. Ironically, you don’t have to do anything different. Since this smoke and mirrors trick comes along only once a year—by all means, use this to your advantage! Speak up. Ask for what you want. Meanwhile, travel for pleasure beckons. Grab every chance you can to get a change of scenery!

Pisces the Fish (February 19-March 20):

This is a favorable time to attract money from others—a spouse, a business partner, a bank or the government. It’s also an excellent time to seek a loan or a mortgage. Meanwhile, your intimate, personal relationships will be affectionate. New romance might begin. Midweek, the Sun changes signs, joining Mercury and Mars in the part of your chart that makes you want to explore the world more. You will want to travel, study and talk to people from different backgrounds. Enjoy reading and writing; however, get out more so that you can be involved!

Fremont Area Writers ask ‘Whose story is it?’

● Author talks about writing from multiple points of view

Every person has a point of view about family situations, work colleagues and world events. Short tales are often told from the point of view of a single person, but longer works, especially books and movies, are frequently told by multiple characters with varying viewpoints, many of which do not reflect our own backgrounds or experiences. Done well, this keeps the reader or viewer immersed and intrigued. Done poorly, the audience ends up confused and annoyed.

At the Fremont Area Writers general meeting on Oct. 25, author and instructor Lyndsey Ellis will help writers understand how to develop multiple points of view to enrich their work and avoid leaving readers or viewers dissatisfied. More important than mechanics, Ellis believes creating believable viewpoint characters requires settling into different outlooks authentically. Through observation, research and reflection, a writer can create characters whose lives and beliefs are outside the author’s experience.

Ellis holds an MFA from California College of the Arts. Her work includes speculative fiction and longform essays that explore regional midwest history and intergenerational dynamics. She is the author of the novel Bone Broth, while her extensive body of shorter works have appeared in The New York Times, Kwell Journal , Shondaland, Narratively and several anthologies.

Doris Green receives arts leadership award

● Longtime community organizer represents Tri-City Area at county board of directors meeting

At the Oct. 14 Alameda County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board recognized the 2025 Alameda County Arts Leadership Award recipients with commendations. This event was presented in conjunction with National Arts and Humanities Month in October. Doris Green was the recipient from district 1, which covers the Tri-City Area.

Supervisor David Haubert recognized Green’s involvement in the arts community spanning 40 years—in multiple positions with Fremont Cultural Arts Council, as a musician and music teacher, and as a board member with Bay Philharmonic.

Receiving her award, Green said being chosen for the award was “a wonderful surprise.” For arts, “this was like the Nobel Prize. This was the top one.”

‘[Arts volunteers] give their time and their money, and they’re wonderful to work with’
—Doris Green

She continued, “One thing stands out mostly with me is, the people that you work with in the arts, our volunteers. They give their time and their money, and they’re wonderful to work with. And I’ve decided that that’s the best group of people there are. So thank you very much for thinking of me, and for this unexpected surprise that you gave me, and for your work with the arts. And keep it up.”

There were six award recipients, with a tie for district 5. The full list of award winners can be viewed at arts.alamedacountyca.gov/ arts-leadership-award-program.

Ring in the season of the witch at ‘Bell, Book & Candle’

● Chanticleers Theatre’s spooky play takes audiences back to early romantic comedies

Mystical forces collide with societal expectations and basic human nature in Chanticleers Theatre’s production of Bell, Book & Candle

Based on the 1950 Broadway play of the same name by John Van Druten, which was adapted into the 1958 film that inspired the television series Bewitched, director Dana Fry’s stage production proves to be just as timeless.

Set in New York City’s Greenwich Village in 1959, audiences follow the plight of Gillian Holroyd (played by Dawn Cates), a landlord who moonlights as a witch alongside her sister Nicky (Larissa Kasian) and her Aunt Queenie (Karen Barbera). Gillian’s double-life becomes even more complex as she develops romantic feelings for one of her tenants, Shepherd “Shep” Henderson (Scott Dai) as he struggles to propel his publishing career to new heights.

The audience can relate many of the themes of McCarthy-era sexism and political paranoia to today’s tumultuous social landscape

Learning that Shep is infatuated with the occult and seeks the attention of traveling author Sidney Redlitch (C. Conrad Cady), Gillian utilizes her magic to make Shep fall in love with her. As their new relationship begins to upend the lives of the Holroyd witches and those around them, Shep’s suspicions and Gillian’s own questions about the ethics of her witchcraft thrust the audience into a deep examination of “love under false pretenses.”

The crux of the play is undoubtedly the performances of Cates and Dai as Gillian and Shep. Dai’s usage of 1950s vernacular and mannerisms effectively emulates the acting style of James Stewart’s iconic portrayal of Shep in the 1958 film. Cates’ depiction of Gillian seamlessly juxtaposes the character’s wit and cunning nature with moments of vulnerability. Through Cates’ perfor-

mance, the audience can relate many of the themes of McCarthy-era sexism and political paranoia to today’s tumultuous social landscape.

The supporting cast composed of Kasian, Barbera and Cady also add a layer of nuance and depth to the dynamic between Gillian and Shep. Kasian and Barbera’s depictions of Nicky and Aunt Queenie represent different ends of the

Questions about the ethics of her witchcraft thrust the audience into a deep examination of ‘love under false pretenses’

spectrum of witchcraft as Gillian must decide if she wants to be a more subtle witch like her sister or an unapologetic sorceress like her aunt. Cady’s portrayal of Redlitch throws much-needed comedic relief into the show’s mix amid moments of growing distrust and friction between Gillian and Shep.

Credit is also due to the set design and production team at Chanticleers Theatre. Technical and scenic design director Alexandria Volk’s set expertly transports theater goers to Gillian’s Greenwich Village apartment, complete with a collection of global antiques that hints at the Holroyds’ mystical roots.

Forever tied to a story that helped usher in the romantic comedy genre, Chanticleers Theatre’s Bell, Book & Candle is a perfect show for patrons ages 13+ this upcoming Halloween season.

Music with a Mission to debut 2026 season

● ‘Brotherhood’ concert features Michael Graham and Aileen

Submitted by Justin Cannon

Music with a Mission, dedicated to enriching the cultural vitality of the SF Bay Area through transformative classical chamber music, is excited to announce its 2025 to 2026 season. This season’s theme, Yin and Yang, will explore the balance between contrasting musical forces, beginning with the highly anticipated concert “Brotherhood,” featuring world-class cellist Michael Graham and acclaimed pianist Aileen Chanco.

The Brotherhood concert will take place in three locations and will highlight works from three iconic composers: Arvo Pärt’s (Estonia) Fratres, Dmitri Shostakovich’s (Russia) Sonata in d minor op. 40 and Frédéric Chopin’s (Poland) Sonata in g minor, op. 65. Audiences will be treated to a compelling and intimate performance that

pairs the expressive power of the cello with the elegance of the piano, capturing the essence of both contrast and harmony.

Dr. John Prescott, noted music scholar, will provide a pre-concert lecture to give insight into the program and the significance of the composers’ works.

Vote NO on Prop 50

The League of Women Voters of CA (LWVC) decided not to take a position on Prop 50 (LWVC press release 8/27/25) This same release references their prior position “...we, along with other good government groups issued independent statements opposing mid cycle redistricting.” Use bit.ly/42AJhJN or scan the QR code to read “Opposition Letter to Mid Cycle Redistricting “ which explains why Prop 50 redistricting is a terrible idea. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT THE HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW BOARD (HARB) OF THE CITY OF FREMONT WILL HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING ON THE FOLLOWING PROPOSAL.

SAID PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD AT 6:30 P.M., ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2025, AT THE CITY OF FREMONT DEVELOPMENT SERVICES CENTER, NILES CONFERENCE ROOM, 39550 LIBERTY STREET, FREMONT, CALIFORNIA, AT WHICH TIME ANY AND ALL INTERESTED PERSONS MAY APPEAR AND BE HEARD.
