Welcome to my love letter for our 2025 Cup Week shoot with The Crossing. We shot on a rain-turnedto-shine day in the city’s retail playground. As always, this was a labour of love between countless local creatives with one goal: to showcase and celebrate the most anticipated week on Canterbury’s calendar.
This year, we wanted to push the boundaries of what Cup Week looks and feels like. It’s more than getting dressed up in beautiful things – it’s the busy preparation, the pampering beforehand, and the post-event pleasure, (a smash burger, perhaps). The Crossing is home to all that and more, a premium shopping space filled with retail and wellness spaces, beauty salons, and exquisite dining. I know I’m not alone in thinking this is one of our city’s best achievements
post-earthquakes. The Crossing’s considered mix of luxury local designers and boutiques to worldwide brands means your Cup Week wardrobe is a bounty of opportunity.
Instead of traditional fascinators, headbands and boutonnières, we enlisted Tholsie & Co, The Crossing’s on-site florist, to create headpieces and earrings out of real flowers and plants. Orchid earrings, succulent headdresses that you can, quite literally, replant in the garden after wearing – this was an incredible exhibition of fresh, all natural alternatives with such wow factor. One of the country’s most-loved names in style and, luckily for us, our shoot stylist, Jessie Kirk connected each beautiful element from fashion to flowers and brought this to life. Read more about Jessie, her journey beating breast cancer, and being awarded Fashion Quarterly’s 2024 content creator of the year, from page six.
This shoot anchors our annual Cup & Show Week feature, which captures just how much life these events bring to our city. I also spoke with Addington Raceway’s 2024 ‘Best Dressed’, Gemma Kirk, (who is not related to Jessie Kirk). She returns to the fashion competition this year as a judge – we both can’t wait to see what contestants will wear come November.
So, soak up one more month of (somewhat) calm before the best kind of chaos begins. I’ll see you out there soon!
Metropol Editor
Jessie Kirk received a career-defining Fashion Quarterly content creator of the year award and a stage 2 breast cancer diagnosis within just a few weeks of each other. The fashion personality, and our cover shoot stylist, shares her story with Metropol editor Nina Tucker.
What does bravery look like? If you’re Jessie Kirk, it’s walking the vicious and unpredictable path of breast cancer, and bringing an online community of more than 200,000 people with you. Her world flipped upside down within weeks. Her biggest wins soon became completing six rounds of TCH chemotherapy, five rounds of radiation, a lumpectomy and a lymph node biopsy. Her greatest supporters were her husband Joel, mother Leanne, and a whole family of followers she’d never met. Her online community had seen her through years of growth. It was Jessie’s natural response to continue showing her honest, authentic self.
Jessie had become a full-time content creator less than 12 months before she’d earned the title for being the best one in New Zealand, according to the country’s most widely-read fashion glossy, Fashion Quarterly. Her diagnosis days later, and vulnerability in sharing a harsh reality would break that pattern of stark loneliness for anyone else who needed someone to relate to. When she needed to though, she was given the grace to step back. “Everyone around me both in real life and online just wanted me to focus on getting better. There was no expectation to keep posting, to stay strong for others, or to show up in any particular way. I felt a deep sense of permission to rest, heal and to share when I was ready. That kind of support gave me the space to be vulnerable. Sometimes I shared raw moments and sometimes I stayed quiet for a while, and both were met with love,” she says. It became a philosophy of one foot in front of the other. The energy for doing even her favourite things had disappeared and sometimes the biggest thing she would do in a day was get out of bed. Breast cancer doesn’t come with a handbook – Jessie’s life had changed overnight – she had to face the mental and physical fatigue, treatment, hair loss – with the best mindset she could muster. “Going through something like that, you don’t really have a choice and you just deal with what’s in front of you,” she says.
in October for The Crossing’s capsule collection, or saying yes to styling a Metropol magazine cover shoot. “Up until this point I had only really spent time styling myself, so this was a new experience,” Jessie says. “My main approach was to do something a little unexpected, which in all honesty isn’t too di erent from how I style myself.”
Joy is in her as-regular-as-possible trips to Japan for the culture, food, scenery, style, shopping, and in discovering and supporting small Aotearoa or Australian-based fashion brands. It’s in renovating and styling her dream 1930s Christchurch bungalow she and Joel bought this year to be closer to family, and making it a home for their two dachsunds and two flu y ragdoll cats. The pair sold their Auckland townhouse and hunted for a character home fast – finding one that had her lucky digits, 24, in the address. It went to auction before Jessie and Joel had finance ready, but passed in, which opened the stage for negotiation. The sellers came down exactly $24,000. Serendipitous timing.
Next year, Jessie will celebrate beating cancer, turning 30, and her eight-year wedding anniversary, with a trip to Japan, naturally. Her online family will continue to grow, no doubt, with each creative vision she turns into captivating content. Life will bloom with purpose. “The future looks bright and I’m so ready for it.”
Your style in three words? Feminine, edgy and unexpected.
Your self-care ritual?
An everything shower followed with a face mask and chilling out watching YouTube. I do this at least once a week.
The journey tested her but she never stood alone. Everything from loved ones checking in, to her close friend Hayley dropping regular meals on the doorstep was a reminder of the support network she was wrapped in. Rest was her biggest asset, and resilience meant surviving each day or accepting help instead of bearing the load. “I’ve learnt that I’m a lot stronger than I ever gave myself credit for.” In March she was deemed cancer free. Right now, she’s counting down to her final treatment session.
Freedom became perspective, and Jessie’s survivorship changed her way of living. “I don’t wait for the ‘right time’ to do things anymore. Life really is too short to keep putting things o or waiting until everything feels perfect. I’ve let go of a lot of pressure I used to put on myself and now I try to live with more intention, and more softness too.”
She’ll give energy to things that feel right, like hitting the runway for charity Breast Cancer Cure’s Fashion for a Cure show
One piece of clothing you couldn’t live without?
A staple in my wardrobe is a good pair of suit pants. I love that I can wear them dressed up and more casual too. Also, my Tabis, these are my absolute favourite shoes and I’ve worn them almost everyday for the last two years.
The best thing you’ve discovered in Christchurch since moving to the city?
My husband and I are absolutely obsessed with the cheese twists from Blue Moon Bakehouse.
Your biggest fashion hack?
When in doubt use the sandwich method. Match the colour of your shoes to either your top or handbag and your outfit will always look cohesive.
Countless contestants. Thousands of dollars. One sash. Cantabrian Gemma Kirk knows just how fierce the racing fashion industry can be. This year, the current holder of Addington Raceway’s best dressed returns on the judging panel of The Crossing’s Fashion Competition, and shares her journey to judging with Metropol editor Nina Tucker ahead of Cup Week.
With her graceful charm, Gemma’s a recognisable face thanks to being scouted for local modelling gigs like that of luxury scarf brand Dark Hampton. She’s comfortable in front of a camera, and it might have been a viable career had she an extra few inches. “I’ve had to accept I’m about three inches shorter than I need to be to compete with the catwalk ‘glamazons’ and make it a viable career,” she says. So she settled for it being a side hustle. “These opportunities pop up and you need to embrace them right?” In racewear, she has.
The United Kingdom-born Gemma Kirk won her first pageant at 16 years old. Bit by the ‘pageant bug’, she wasted no time competing in local and international competitions. Gemma soon picked up a love for travel, a new career in the industry, an opportunity in New Zealand, and a husband. They settled down
and welcomed their daughter Georgia, who Gemma describes as “seven going on 17”.
Whether you’ve admired her from afar on race days or known her up close, Gemma has never said no to opportunity. When approached with husband Steve to enter their first New Zealand Fashion in the Field (FITF), Gemma’s first thought was ‘why not?’ Side note: they both made the finals and Gemma was hooked – even if she’s still hardly seen a horse race.
A similar déjà vu washed over her when introduced to Addington Raceway’s event manager Vanessa Leeming at Ladies Night earlier this year. She’d told Harness Racing
New Zealand’s Courtney Buchanan her dream of judging at Addington Raceway just moments before the opportunity presented itself. It was as quick as manifestation gets.
“Vanessa discussed with reps from The Crossing as the main
sponsor who select the panel, and here we are,” Gemma smiles. This year, the competition darling will put her decades of knowledge and experience to use in a fresh, full-circle way. “The FITF community is fiercely competitive but also supportive. I have gratefully listened and absorbed their collective wisdom over the years and overlaid this with my own style and research… and had plenty of misses as well as wins. All of these factors have been important in allowing me to build the experience needed to join the judging panel, and I can’t wait.”
The role of a judge is enormous, critiquing and comparing the tiniest details from swarms of competitors – which means individual feedback is rare. So much so, Gemma has refined her taste and toolkit with advice from other accomplished women in the FITF community. “There are so many experienced women and they are generous with their opinions and advice. They are honest to the point of being blunt at times. If you take that advice on, consider it and make a conscious decision whether you feel it’s right for you, it’s invaluable in helping your outfits evolve.”
Evolving in her own style has been challenging. When all eyes are on one woman and her months of preparation, it’s arguably impossible not to overthink it. “I’ve been through a period where I probably focused too much on what I felt the judges would be looking for,” Gemma says. “I learned to focus on what outfit works for me and that I feel good in, first and foremost, because that a ects how you wear and present your outfit.” With a naturally tailored and classic default aesthetic, Gemma’s had to dance the line to meet her personal style and o er a striking something extra that stands out. “I’d like to think I get a little braver each time,” she laughs.
Every look begins with the headdress. “I work my way down from there. It is far easier to match an outfit to a hat than the other way around,” she advises. Gemma will sketch her design idea and take it to her dressmaker Amy, of Love in Every Stitch, who she began working with just a few seasons ago. “I love building the concept and having design input. Amy is wonderfully patient and capable so we nut it all out together and then she works her magic,” she explains. “I didn’t think a bespoke design would be an option when I started out, and while there is more time and e ort required, the overall cost is comparable and you get to create your own unique outfit, tailored to a high standard.”
Hopefully, there’s a winning sash that follows the gruelling hours planning and nit-picking each finishing touch. “There are so many people that put so much time and e ort into beautiful outfits that do not win. That can be tough.” This year, Gemma will be one of those making di cult decisions.
She’s not closing the book on her own time in the arena, instead choosing to dabble selectively. Hoping her virtual entry for the Melbourne Cup final will prove successful, Gemma is channeling her energy into dreamlike opportunities – like judging.
If you don’t catch her at Addington Raceway on 11 November, you might catch the emerging artist at the Christchurch Art Show in future – a step beyond her comfort zone. “I try to be in my art studio as much as I can. My family are my focus, my husband is my best friend and my daughter keeps me present and on my toes. Art is my current passion and I am trying di erent genres and styles to develop and commercialise my skills.”
Whether you’re moving across Christchurch, or relocating across the country, Cartage Solutions is your full-service removals partner. We take care of it all, so you don’t have to lift a finger (or a fridge).
Fashion, like all art, is subjective, Gemma says, summarising that wearing an outfit you feel beautiful and confident in makes an unsuccessful outcome easier to bear. She encourages others to focus on enjoying the people and the day, to view the sash as a ‘cherry on top’.
With the festive season fast approaching, parents and grandparents are on the hunt for thoughtful gifts.

Artisan pottery-making was at its zenith in New Zealand in the 1970s and ’80s. Now in Christchurch, that art form is seeing a renaissance through a studio that aims to foster a vibrant ceramic community.
Ru shu er Ceramics was founded back in 2023 by talented ceramic artist Robyn Smith-Clark who says that the workshop is “not just a studio, but a hub of inspiration and learning.” Robyn’s own journey into the world of ceramics began in 1973 in Auckland. From that moment onwards, her hands shaped, moulded, and transformed clay into exquisite pieces of art that have been showcased in numerous exhibitions. Today she has another mission – to share her wealth of knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm for ceramics with the community in Christchurch. “I always had a dream to set up a workshop like this.”
To this end, she and fellow tutor Carolyn Landesman run a series of classes and workshops for beginners and more experienced ceramicists. They teach both pottery hand-building and pottery wheel work, with classes available to browse on the website.
“We believe in the magic of handmade artistry, the connection between the creator and the clay and the joy that comes from creating something unique.”
Ru shu er Ceramics is open seven days a week at 90 Disraeli Street and has a vast range of supplies from glazes and clays, to pottery wheels and kilns.

Introducing Creation Creation, a deeply thought-provoking journey of life’s bigge que ions answered (sort of).
At Isaac Theatre Royal’s Creation Creation on Sunday 12 November, two wildly inventive performers set out to tackle these very questions, and many more, with nothing but cardboard boxes, ping pong balls, and an imagination as big as the universe itself.
This joyful explosion of theatre, sculpture, and puppetry is part cosmic quest, part cheeky comedy, and all heart. Crafted from real-life interviews with people aged eight to 102, Creation Creation is an award-winning Australian Windmill Theatre Company production that explores life’s mysteries through the voices of the community. From “how are babies made?” and “what does dying feel like?” to “what will life be like in 1000 years?” The questions are big, the answers profound, sometimes hilarious, and always deeply human.
This critically acclaimed production is being presented in Christchurch for the first time as part of the Isaac Theatre Royal’s bold new programming strategy, which champions creativity, diversity, and connection. In keeping with this kaupapa, the theatre is o ering one free school performance for tamariki across the region, as well as a public performance with complimentary tickets available for whānau who may not otherwise be able to attend. “We’re committed to making sure incredible theatre experiences are accessible to all our communities,” says Anh Nguyen,
marketing manager at the Isaac Theatre Royal.
“Creation Creation is funny, tender, thought-provoking – designed to spark conversations across generations.”
To ensure the production is welcoming to as many audience members as possible, the public performance of Creation Creation will include live New Zealand Sign Language interpretation for deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons. This is storytelling at its most inclusive: part science, part wonder, part playground. Whether you come out with more questions or fewer, Creation Creation promises one unforgettable ride to the edge of the universe and back. Head to the website to book tickets now.

When it comes to employment, New Zealand is playing a game of two halves with the South Island driving national employment expansion.
The South Island, in particular the Otago region, is currently driving New Zealand’s employment expansion, underscoring the growing importance of opportunities beyond Auckland and Wellington.
Starting from a smaller base, the South Island is punching above its weight with strong job creation, while the more established North Island has recorded steady but subdued gains.
This is according to the latest annual report from global recruitment and HR company, Employment Hero. Its annual jobs report is created from first-party data from across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It provides an aggregated, anonymised real-time view of employee records from 350,000 small and medium-sized businesses employing over two million people across these three markets.
The report states that, over the past 12 months, the South Island delivered impressive employment growth, ending July at 5.4% YoY, compared with 0.6% for the North Island.
Otago has emerged as an unexpected hotspot fuelled by tourism recovery, agriculture, and regional investment.
After a quiet 2024, the region surged to 19.4% YoY employment growth by July 2025 – making it the fastest-growing SME job market in the country this year. This illustrates the extent to which regional economies are now shaping New Zealand’s labour market. This regional dynamism reflects broader global trends where smaller markets and non-capital cities are shouldering more of the employment rebound.
Confidence, however, remains weak. In New Zealand, 62% of workers said they now prioritise job security over ambition, higher than Australia’s 57%. Older workers and part-timers feel this most acutely, with 64% of over-55s doubting they could find another role quickly. Yet those who started a new job in the past 12 months were 33% more likely to feel optimistic, suggesting mobility remains a key lever for restoring confidence.

As a former GP, I know the stress Kiwis face when waiting for a medical test. For too many, that wait has been far too long.
This year, nearly 75,000 additional diagnostic procedures will be delivered to tackle those delays, including 64,000 radiology procedures, 7100 colonoscopies, 2200 cardiac tests, and 1650 colposcopies. For patients, these aren’t just numbers – they represent faster answers, earlier diagnosis, and peace of mind at what can be one of the most worrying times in their lives.
Behind this delivery is a $65 million Diagnostic Improvement Plan to improve services, speeding up medical scans and tests. It builds on other recent changes, such as the $30 million expansion of community-referred radiology, which lets GPs, urgent care doctors, and nurse practitioners send patients directly for ultrasounds, CT scans, and x-rays. This cuts out unnecessary waits, reducing delays for patients and easing pressure on hospitals. Specialists can spend more time on assessments and surgeries, and emergency departments will see reduced demand. New training places in radiology and echo-sonography will be provided to meet future needs.
In addition, the upgrade of Christchurch Hospital’s cardiac catheterisation laboratory is now complete, marking a major milestone in the delivery of world-class cardiac care for the South Island. This project has delivered three state-of-the-art labs – one upgraded with new equipment in 2021, a second upgraded earlier this year, and now the completion of a brand-new third lab. Christchurch Hospital provides the South Island’s only electrophysiology and complex structural heart intervention services. This upgrade ensures that life-saving interventions, such as acute stenting for heart attacks and advanced electrophysiology treatments, use the latest technology. The new facilities also deliver significant clinical improvements. Advanced imaging and diagnostic technology provide greater precision for complex procedures, while reduced radiation exposure improves safety for both patients and sta . These additional procedures will mean answers sooner, treatment earlier, and better long-term health outcomes.

The current economy and business landscape is defined by the legacy of high inflation and a profound lack of customer confidence.
Your customers aren’t just saving; they’re genuinely hesitant to spend. Years of high prices have stretched household budgets thin, leaving consumers with less disposable income and a cautious mindset, particularly for non-essential purchases. This reluctance is translating directly into lower foot tra c, customers spending less, and unpredictable revenue for you.
The interest rate lag: relief is coming, but slowly Yes, the Reserve Bank is cutting the O cial Cash Rate (OCR), and that’s good news. It signals a future where financing costs are lower and mortgage pain is reduced. But here’s the crucial reality check: there will be a lag. It takes time for lower interest rates to translate into genuine consumer spending confidence. People need to feel financially secure before they open their wallets again. This means for the next six or more months, you must operate as if the squeeze is still on.
Your action plan: agility is survival
Don’t wait for the economy to save you. Focus on internal strength now:
1. Laser-focus your cashflow: Cash is king, now more than ever. Produce detailed, rolling cashflow forecasts. Identify your non-negotiable costs and aggressively look to trim the fat elsewhere. Ensure your invoicing is prompt and collection is relentless.
2. Know your customer (and your price): You can’t a ord ‘bad’ customers. Focus on retaining your most profitable clients by doubling down on value and customer experience. Don’t be afraid to re-evaluate your pricing structure, your margins are too important to sacrifice.
3. Innovate or stagnate: Tough times breed ingenuity. Look for ways to automate, streamline processes, and adopt new technology to boost operational e ciency. Diversifying your service or product o erings, even in a small way, can unlock new revenue streams.
4. Seek wise counsel: Don’t go it alone. Engage a business advisor. They can provide the objective financial clarity and strategic planning needed to navigate the uncertainty. The road ahead demands resilience and agility. Those businesses that strategically tighten their belt, optimise operations, and fiercely protect their customer relationships will not just survive this period, they’ll be poised to thrive when consumer confidence returns.
EBI Consultants is ready to help you sharpen your strategy. For a free, no-obligation discussion on fortifying your business for the year ahead, please get in touch.
With 30 years of experience working as a financial adviser, Alistair Bean writes about the biggest mistakes people make concerning their financial health.
Ihave been a financial adviser since January 1995, initially at a major bank, where ultimately I spent more than three years as regional manager of financial advisers for the South Island and then another year in central districts. After this, I ran my own business from February 2013 onwards.
During this time, I have assisted many clients in reaching and exceeding their financial goals and outcomes. I have seen planned succession to their families, many of whom are now also our clients.
The greatest financial advice achievements happen when medium to long-term investment relationships occur with clients to help them achieve their goals.
“My longest client financial advice relationship began in 1995. This person is still a client to this day, as well as her family members, friends and colleagues.”
It was recently reported that two out of three New Zealanders would like to seek financial advice, but 42% were too afraid to ask.
This is one of the biggest mistakes that people can make. Not seeking advice can mean the di erence between building your nest-egg to the level that you are aiming for and not achieving your long-term and retirement goals. Imagine not seeing a doctor for health issues, or cutting your own hair, or boarding an aeroplane and choosing to be the pilot without any training, even cooking your own meal at a restaurant; this is the same as not seeking financial advice.
At Alistair Bean & Associates - Financial Advisers, we’re not really that scary, which you can tell by the smiles on our faces. In fact, we are very friendly; however, if I look a little scary, then I can tell you that Jordan is super nice, something her clients often say.
The process can be quite simple. We’ll talk about your short, medium and long-term goals and can give you some assistance with creating goals. We’ll chat about your attitude to risk, discuss diversification and check your ongoing cash needs as well as retiring any debts. We’ll then monitor your investment choices and recommendations for you and meet regularly to review. All this time, we’ll keep researching markets and di erent types of investments on your behalf in the background. We’ll also look at any investment and KiwiSaver portfolios you have and give you our opinion.
The other piece of advice is, don’t delay. If you haven’t already started, begin your planning today, every week counts, and every hesitation can mean a smaller pot.
Contact Alistair Bean or Jordan Bean for an appointment for investment and KiwiSaver advice today.

With a professional background spanning 25 years in nursing, Liane brings an exceptional level of care, attention to detail, and integrity to real estate. Her clients appreciate her composed approach, strategic thinking, and her ability to balance structure with adaptability throughout the sales process.
Living in Governors Bay, Liane focuses on Banks Peninsula, the Port Hills, and surrounding areas - regions she knows well and proudly calls home. She understands the finer details of these unique markets and provides her clients with the local insight needed to make informed decisions.

It is a big decision to bring your precious home to the market.
The emotions vary with the sales situation, but they are always there and a great real estate agent has to have more than the hard commercial skills. They must also bring empathy and a passion for your property and its location to the process that sees your home go to its next happy owner.
If you’ve been lucky enough to call the bays of Banks Peninsula home but are looking to move, you can’t do better than entrust the sale of your prized house to Liane Bean of Bayleys Sumner. “I’m lucky enough to live in Governors Bay and my o ce is based just over the hill in Sumner. The Bays are my happy place and they are so much more to me than just my professional patch,” says Liane. “I walk my dogs, meet neighbours and friends, and follow the changing seasons across the harbour. This bond with my community is at the centre of my drive to help them enjoy their sales journey, and assist others to make the move here.”
As a Bays specialist, Liane appreciates the way of life that makes the area so special. “We have a unique lifestyle here with outdoor adventure on the doorstep, close-knit schools, community networks and all with easy access to Christchurch.” Liane comes to real estate from a long and rewarding career in nursing. “My love of connecting with people and listening have proven ideal and transferrable to this career. I am grounded in my approach, and integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness, are my key character traits that clients and buyers value highly,” she says. When it comes to putting the deal together, Liane’s attention to detail comes into its own. “I also have sharp negotiation skills and I persevere for the outcome that pleases everyone.”
With Liane located on the spot, there is no extra travel time and scheduling problems that there can be with town-based agents. “Being right on hand means I can meet buyers and host viewings without delays,” says Liane. “Your property gets the time and attention as well as the personal connection that it deserves. I’ve found these things can make a di erence between a looker and buyer.”
Liane would love to hear from you if you are considering selling your home, or are curious about where it sits in today’s market. “Together we can showcase your home to the right buyers and achieve an exceptional result, all with the local insight and care you deserve.”
Long, sweeping days and balmy, defined evenings – celebrate the warmer season with the latest in spring/summer style.
Direct from Europe, Mikko Shoes’ spring/summer 2025 range introduces a reflective season that balances playful optimism and wistful sophistication. The collection embraces energising colour and tactile texture, with a fresh take on iconic shapes.
The charming sea-side inspired ‘Nautical Mood’ palette featuring cobalt, denim, navy and aqua evokes a penchant for a relaxed Mediterranean-inspired lifestyle, says founder Michaela Longsta , while mood boosting, vibrant ‘Sunset Shades’ of rosy pink, fuchsia, red and orange o er escapism at its best.
This season’s neutral palette, ‘Retro Mid-tones’ draws inspiration from the sentimental imperfections of the 1970s. Hues of camel, olive, paprika, duck egg blue, sage, and leopard print are enriching and balanced – a welcome nod to the simplicity of life before the digital age.
In key silhouettes, Mikko sees a distinct trend in footwear drawing from iconic styles with comfort at their core; fisherman and buckle sandals, tennis sneakers, sports-inspired sandals, loafers and clogs. All shapes explored in their key trends of the season with chic modern updates.
The ‘Lady-like Elegance’ collection continues to be an important theme to elevate summer dressing. “This season there is a clear shift from minimalism to unique adornments and textural finishes. Floral trims, embroidery, buckles, tassels, ra a, mesh, lustrous metallic finishes and many more decorative textures are hand-crafted for pure admiration,” Michaela says.
Whatever your style, this spring/summer collection has been thoughtfully curated by Michaela, to bring joyful updates to daily dressing, all while pairing beautifully with your existing wardrobe.
Visit the wonderful team at Mikko at 134 Victoria Street, or shop their new catalogue online at mikkoshoes.nz.

Traditional options can be invasive or o er only temporary results. EMFACE Eye is di erent, says Dr Brigid Lee of Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. This advanced, non-invasive treatment combines the power of radiofrequency and HIFES (High-Intensity Facial Electrical Stimulation) technology to strengthen muscles beneath the eyes and boost collagen and elastin production. “The result is smoother skin, reduced pu ness, softened crow’s feet, and a subtly lifted brow, all without surgery, needles, or downtime.”
As part of the wider EMFACE platform, there are treatments for multiple areas so that results can be tailored to clients individual needs: the forehead to lift brows, the cheeks to lift and sculpt, under the chin to reduce a double chin and refine the jawline, and now, rejuvenating the under-eye area.
EMFACE treatments are comfortable, quick, and convenient. “Each session takes just 20 minutes, with four treatments spaced one week apart recommended for optimal results. With no bruising, redness, or downtime, you’ll enjoy a refreshed, natural look that improves gradually over time,” Dr Brigid says. Christchurch hair stylist Caro Haar shares the inside scoop ahead of spring event season.
Easy to style whatever your aesthetic, the new BIOM 2.2 from leading footwear brand ECCO is the ultimate in everyday versatility. Known for their skilful application of innovative technology, the team of specialists continue to create a perfect synergy of supreme comfort and chic styling in every step.
Crafted from a mix of textile and premium ECCO leather from the footwear manufacturer’s own tanneries, this athletic and on-trend design can easily be dressed up with a seasonal dress, or down for a hike in nature. Designed with their BIOM NATURAL MOTION – which provides anatomical cushioning to guide natural movement and empower the foot’s systems for impact absorption – this shoe fits true to form. Plus, the signature ECCO LYTR technology makes this signature form and comfort even lighter, while rubber inserts provide grip and durability. If you need a new sneaker for spring, this is it. Head to ECCO on 195 Papanui Road, Merivale or shop online.
It’s that time of year,” Caro says, alluding to the pre-Christmas thrill of events from Cup Week and galas to weddings and formals, plus this year’s inaugural Christchurch Spring Fashion Festival. Caro explains how crucial it is to prepare your vision now – how your hair coordinates with your outfit, and how you’ll achieve it with a stylist. Haar Design is the place to start.
With decades in the hair scene, Caro has seen the trends at events change, referencing long down-the-middle curls and the trending Kardashian-esque slick back pony tail. However your headwear is shaping up – fascinator, hatinator or contemporary headband – the Haar Design team can create a style that suits.
Achieve easy volume and voluptuous locks with Haar Design’s Cup Week special – blow wave and styling for $45, hair up and styling for $85, and weekly blow waves from $35.
Sometimes, extra length can make all the di erence in finishing your look, which is where stylist Shannon Britton comes in. Her tape-in hair extension service is a low maintenance yet game-changing way to add natural-looking length.

Labels like ‘vegan’, ‘cruelty-free’, and ‘natural’ aren’t interchangeable buzzwords. Vegan beauty products exclude all animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax, lanolin, milk or honey, while cruelty-free products aren’t tested on animals.
Founder of Dear Heart vegan beauty brand Karen Haig has been handcrafting soaps since 2003. “Friends and family are my willing guinea pigs,” Karen says. “With so many sensitive skins in our circle, we’ve created formulas that are truly gentle.” Each bar blends plant extracts, minerals and essential oils, and is free from synthetic chemicals, artificial fragrances, and preservatives.
Using the traditional cold-process method results in a less harsh
product and Dear Heart solid shampoo bars are formulated to have a low pH. “Some other solid shampoos are really just soap with a high pH that can irritate scalps,” Karen explains. Her solid shampoo bars sit at a scalp-friendly level.
Perfect for everyday indulgence or thoughtful gifting, each soap contains an embedded ‘soap heart’ that gradually appears with use, plus she tucks an inspirational quote into each box. Five-star reviews praise the ‘heavenly scent’ and the bars’ ‘refreshing, nondrying’ qualities.

1. Double cleanse: You wouldn’t shower with your clothes on, right? Start with an oil-based makeup remover to dissolve and remove makeup. Follow this with a water-based face cleanser to wash o all the dirt, sweat, and oil build-up. The double cleanse method means your skincare products will be deeper absorbed for better results and a brighter glow.
2. Exfoliate: Aim to remove dry and dead skin one to three times a week, depending on your skin type – but consult your dermatologist or aesthetician first so you don’t wind up with irritated skin. Exfoliating gets rid of dry, flaky skin for a smoother, radiant complexion.
3. Use a nourishing face mask: More moisture equals more glow, so, with the help of an expert, source a hydrating face mask that will suit your skin type and lock in moisture. Concentrated ingredients build a better skin barrier to deeply hydrate and improve elasticity while reducing dryness and dullness for a luminous result.
4. Introduce a vitamin C serum: One of beauty’s best secrets, vitamin C supports the skin’s regeneration process, naturally brightening the skin and correcting dark spots to reduce hyperpigmentation. Unfortunately, though, dietary vitamin C doesn’t reach the skin’s surface – so it’s important to bring the powerful antioxidant in through your skincare routine. A vitamin C serum will help protect against fine lines and wrinkles through enhancing collagen production for a firmer, plumper appearance.
5. Wear sunscreen: If nothing else, sunscreen should be the one thing applied to your skin even on a dull day. The obvious benefits: reduced sun exposure and a lower risk of cancer. The lesser-known benefits: more even skin tone, improved skin resilience, hydration, better results from your other skincare products, and ageing and skin damage prevention. Experts suggest a SPF 30 broad spectrum sunscreen applied daily, and more than once daily for prolonged exposure.

Cancer survivor and Metropol writer Cosette Calder gives practical tips on how to help people facing a cancer diagnosis.
When someone you know is diagnosed with cancer, it can be hard to know what to say or do. It’s a di cult and often overwhelming moment. For many, knowing how to respond or how to o er support can be confusing, leaving us feeling helpless. Before my own diagnosis, I felt the same. But through my experience and conversations with other patients and caregivers, I’ve learned how meaningful support can be, in small, practical ways.
1. Transport matters
Cancer treatment often involves frequent hospital visits. If you can o er a ride, even just once, it helps enormously. When I was going through throat cancer treatment, families from my son’s rugby team pitched in to help with transport. Their unprompted kindness lightened our load immensely.
2. Bring food
Cooking becomes a challenge during treatment. Ready-made meals, especially those that can be frozen, are deeply appreciated. Always check for dietary restrictions first. Even home-baked treats for the patient’s children can lift spirits.
3. O er time and presence
Cancer can be lonely. Visiting, texting, or even just sitting silently with someone can bring comfort. Check first if it’s a good time to visit, and never go if you’re unwell. Even a simple message like, “Thinking of you today,” can make someone feel remembered.
4. Support the caregivers too
Caregivers carry a heavy emotional and physical load.
Acknowledge them. O er help, meals, or just an ear to listen. Encourage them to connect with online support groups for caregivers.
5. Choose words carefully
Don’t worry about saying the ‘perfect’ thing. It’s okay to say, “I don’t know what to say, but I care.” A favourite phrase among patients is: “I hope you’re the best you can be today.” Avoid comparisons to others’ cancer stories because every experience is unique.
6. Thoughtful gifts
Simple items can bring comfort: books, puzzles, lip balm, hand cream, blankets, a neck pillow, or gift cards. Even a cleaning service voucher can be a welcome relief.
7. When cancer can’t be cured
Talking about dying is di cult. Often, just being there is enough, a hand to hold or sitting quietly nearby can bring peace. Let the person guide the moment. These final shared times can be deeply meaningful.
Your presence, kindness, and ongoing support, not just at the start, but throughout the journey, can make a world of di erence.

Public patients across Canterbury now have access to advanced PET-CT imaging closer to home. The scan is critical in finding many difficult-to-detect cancers.
At their central Christchurch clinic on Kilmore Street, Reform Radiology’s Molecular Imaging and Therapy Centre is now accepting referrals through the public health system.
The new clinic will significantly reduce travel burdens for those living in Canterbury and the South Island who were previously travelling to Auckland to undergo advanced PET-CT imaging, including Gallium-68 Dotatate PET-CT.
This specialised scan is performed for diagnosis and management of neuroendocrine tumours – a group of rare and often di cult-to-detect cancers. The radiotracer enables highly precise imaging, supporting more accurate treatment planning.
“We’re excited about the positive impact this has on patient outcomes,” says Paul Mouthaan, general manager of Reform Radiology. “For many regional patients, diagnosis previously meant the disruption, cost, and stress of travelling to Auckland, often at a time when they were already unwell. Providing these services closer to home makes a real and tangible di erence, and we’re proud to be partnering with Health NZ to make it happen,” he adds.
The clinic is the first private radiology provider in the South Island to o er both advanced digital PET-CT and nuclear medicine SPECT-CT scans. The molecular imaging service is led by specialty trained nuclear medicine radiologists.
Reform Radiology is now accepting public and private PET-CT referrals, providing the most comprehensive service to the local community.

Aesthetic dentures are designed to look natural, restoring not only a complete smile but also the overall facial appearance.
Unlike cosmetic dentures, which can have a generic or artificial look, aesthetic dentures are carefully crafted to mimic natural teeth and gums, boosting a patient’s confidence.
A key part of the process is characterisation, which involves customising the colour, shape, and arrangement of individual teeth to complement the patient’s age, gender, and facial features. This meticulous approach ensures the dentures appear seamless and blend in with the patient’s mouth. Furthermore, aesthetic dentures address issues beyond just the teeth. This year, trade fascinators for natural florals. Made from real plants and flowers, The Crossing’s Tholsie & Co ushers in a new era in raceday style – where floristry becomes fashion. Each delicate orchid earring, divine piece of headwear or elegant boutonnière is handcrafted with beautiful elements of nature.
“Our wearable florals are inspired by the elegance of nature, combining the sculptural beauty of succulents and orchids with a modern, refined style,” says Tholsie & Co’s Melanie Collins. “Every piece is handcrafted and unique, designed to stay fresh, feel comfortable, and reflect your individual style. Succulents can even be replanted for a second life, making them a sustainable, eco-conscious choice for Cup Week this year.”
1. Keep cool and shaded until wearing.
2. Handle gently – flowers are delicate and best left in place once styled.
3. Avoid direct sunlight, heat, and hairspray – orchids and succulents are more resilient but will last longer when protected.

Cup and Show Week is all about making an entrance. While dresses, suits and accessories take centre stage, one of the easiest ways to refresh your look is often overlooked: updating your eyewear.

Opening their new premises on the boardwalk at The Tannery on 20 October, Matthews Eyecare o ers expert, personalised guidance to help you find frames that flatter your face shape, complement your colour palette and express your individual style.
New owner Claire Randall is excited about the move from Riccarton. “We’re thrilled to join The Tannery’s stylish mix of stores,” she says.
“Alongside beautiful frames, we o er ZEISS lenses – German-engineered for crystal-clear vision and True UV protection. Even our clear lenses protect eyes from harmful rays.”
To solve the challenge of finding eyewear that’s both stylish and practical, the Matthews Eyecare team has curated a collection where design meets function with brands such as Kaleos, Projekt Produkt and Tom Ford. Expect everything from timeless classics to bold, avant-garde frames, each chosen to help you stand out for all the right reasons.

• 250g chicken breast
• 1 small onion, peeled and diced
• 1/2 red capsicum, seeds and core removed, diced
• 1/2 green capsicum, seeds and core removed, diced
Method

You’ll find these happily marry together at Wigram Brewing Co’s Hangar 57 Fillery and Taproom on Sonter Road.
“We have just launched an on-site pizzeria and food trailer that faces out to our courtyard,” says Caroline McGurk co-owner of the Wigram Brewing Company. “It’s a first for this part of the city and means we can cater for a much wider range of customers –families especially. Imagine how good this will be in the summer. We are very excited at this new venture to add to everything else we have to o er. It will be great for functions, work events or time with family and friends.”
The pizza chefs will conjure up aviation-themed creations such as the ‘Margarita with Altitude’ (for traditionalists), the ‘Mayday Mayday’ (not for the fainthearted), the ‘Globe Master’ (for meat lovers) and the ‘Winging It’ (for lovers of chicken).
There are flat breads too – the ‘Plane’, the ‘Economy’ and the ‘Business,’ which need no explaining – all to go with the diverse range of beers brewed by the company. “Over the years we have produced 70 di erent beers, ales and ciders and we have just brewed a new raspberry sour for the summer,” says Caroline. What better reason do you need to head to the hangar for a bite and a beer?
Find the hangar at 57 Sonter Road, Wigram, for your next pizza and beer fix.
The city’s best-kept secret for affordable custom rugs with heart and heritage.
From soft textures to subtle patterns, a beautiful wool rug is the quickest and easiest way to transform a room, instantly adding warmth and style.
Few know the power of a rug better than siblings Michelle MacWilliam and Richard Cassidy. Together, they run local company Carpet Binders, Christchurch’s best kept secret for custom rugs and mats made from high quality, New Zealand wool carpet. Now located at 100a Hayton Road in Sockburn, the business has been in the family since 1972. Michelle and Richard took the reins in 2018, upholding their family’s traditional values of quality, a ordability, and personal service. “We’re a tight team of eight, and we value the diversity and unique perspectives that each member of the team brings with them to work at Carpet Binders,” Michelle says. “We’re proud of our community
focus, supporting the Kaiapoi East Resident’s Association and their pocket forest initiative, and lending a hand to the Rewi Alley Foundation of New Zealand.”
Michelle is also proud of the excellent reviews her team gets on platforms like Google and Facebook. “My team are fiercely focused on superb customer service. Our reviews evidence that.” So what exactly is carpet binding? Put simply, it’s the act of hemming an edge onto a piece of carpet to make a rug. Customers who have leftover carpet from a recent installation can have their o cuts transformed in mats with a finish of their choosing, including woollen overlocking, sleek slimline tape, and designer widetape. Those without spare carpet are able to choose from a wide range of New Zealand wool carpet squares from the Carpet Binders’ showroom, and have them cut to size and bound.
“We can handle up to ten by four metres in size, for a rug. So if you’ve got a large, hard floor in an open space and you want a large area rug, maybe for children to play on, we can provide that.
“We also have a lot of freedom to o er di erent shapes like ovals and circles, we’ve even made a rug the shape of a tiki.”
Carpet binders have a selection of pre-made mats in varying sizes and styles, and can o er same day turnaround for custom jobs.
“You can walk in and choose your carpet in our showroom at 10am, and walk out by 2pm with a custom bound mat,” says Michelle. “That’s a service our out-of-town customers appreciate.”
As a proud supplier of Wools of New Zealand wool carpet, quality is guaranteed, but compared to larger competitors, Michelle’s pricing is significantly more a ordable, for the same product. Whether you’re refreshing your home for Christmas or looking for a unique floor solution, Carpet Binders delivers smart, sustainable, and stylish rugs with heart. Browse online at carpetbinders.nz or woolarearugs.nz or visit their vibrant showroom Monday to Thursday from 8am to 5.30pm, Fridays 8am to 5pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm.
Moving into spring and summer means finding ways to stay cool, no matter the weather outside. One of the best ways to do this is by choosing a mattress made with high-quality natural materials, says director of Dreamwool Beds David Henderson. “It’s easy to blame the summer temperatures when you overheat at night, but the truth is that your bed could be making things worse. Synthetic materials and memory foam can’t breathe, which means that they trap heat and become progressively hotter overnight.”
To avoid night sweats, discomfort, and interrupted sleep, it’s important to select a mattress with generous comfort layers of the finest all-natural materials, David says. “Merino wool moves the dial in terms of comfort and temperature neutrality. We’ve understood this since the beginning of Dreamwool, when owner Edgar Henderson remembered the old-fashioned black merino singlets worn by his sheep shearers – how they acted as natural insulators, adjusting to changes in temperature during the day to maximise comfort and create perfect balance.” From there, Dreamwool’s first woollen overlay was created, and ever since thousands have enjoyed their quality, handcrafted merino wool and all-natural latex mattresses.
Renowned for its unparalleled softness, high fibre density, and moisture-wicking ability, merino is ideal for warmer sleepers and warmer seasons, but it’s important to know exactly what you’re getting, warns David. “There are a lot of bed manufacturers now claiming to have wool in their mattresses, when the reality is that they’re using very little. When you go shopping for a new mattress, be sure to ask what’s inside and view samples. At Dreamwool, we use merino in meaningful volumes so that our customers can truly feel the benefit; we’re not leaving anything out.”
A luxuriously breathable, all-natural merino wool mattress is an investment, David says, and one that is very worth making. “You spend a third of your life in bed; why would you want to scrimp on comfort? With fewer than 500 luxury mattresses made each year, you know you are getting something rather special.
“Every all-natural Dreamwool mattress is carefully handmade in Christchurch; our customers can expect a sleep experience that is second to none. Your mattress isn’t pre-made in a plastic bag waiting to be shipped. It will be handcrafted individually for you here at Dreamwool Beds, 96 Disraeli Street in Sydenham.”

What’s wanted by everyone?
Real estate has its fair share of ‘I want’ moments: I want the best agent, I want a sale, I want a listing, I want this price, I want that school zone. The list is long and getting longer with demands coming from every stakeholder involved in the process of buying and selling property.
Consultants who want a list of things to match their goals or business plan, matched by owners who want one very specific thing and that’s MORE!
This word is usually followed by others, most often ‘Money’ and ‘Care’.
It’s a simple enough request and it makes perfect sense, but like all simple matters the devil is not just in the detail but the tone and delivery.
Words I don’t hear enough of are:
I will. I will do what it takes. I will open the home for more than 30 minutes once a week!!
I will work longer, harder and smarter, putting you – my client – and your interests over my own.
I will keep in touch, not just in the dizzy, early days, but way down the track when buyers start to feel rare and difficult.
I will be transparent, reporting the good, the hard and the painful to hear, not just the short and sanitised.
[As I write this, I’m reminded of a property we are endeavouring to sell in another region. We haven’t heard from our agent or their team in over three weeks, so there are some strong ‘I want’ conversations coming!]
I will also market your home with intelligence and flair, and if I do utilise AI, I will ensure the marketing content still makes sense.
I will chase every lead and liaise with every agent (in our own brand that means 500 consultants) who may have someone with interest.
You see, I regard the ‘yes, I will do this’, as a commitment that should comprise part of every realtor’s DNA.
Now some ‘I will’ commitments for the owners:
I will acknowledge your expertise and recommendations on how to get the best result.
I will provide you with all the information you require to satisfy a purchaser's due diligence. For example, I will explain clearly to you that the insulation is not throughout the whole house (even if I initially told you that it was) or that the underfloor heating is limited to the bathroom and kitchen.
I’ll also do my best to ensure my home is presented in a manner that attracts and maintains the attention of potential buyers.
As an owner selling, I will do all these things – and the vast majority do this and more.
There are also some ‘I will’ statements for buyers:
If I make an appointment to view a property with you, I will turn up, so you don’t have to drive for miles and/ or stand waiting for me at a home I’ve moved on from.
I will also let you know if there’s a chance that even after saying I want a modern three-bedroom townhouse I might buy a 100-year-old villa!
Yes, all these things happen – and frequently.
If these things can be achieved, I’ve got my own personal ‘I wants’ and ‘I wills’: I want to remain an integral part of an industry I love and have worked hard in and on for over three decades.
And I will do everything I can to sustain that whilst balancing 50 balls in the air, trying not to fall over or be hit by one. Not easy.

From an American pair winning the Supreme WOW Award to Lincoln’s Cushla O’Connell taking out the Wētā Workshop Award for Outstanding Design and Aotearoa section, the 2025 World of WearableArt show in Wellington was everything weird, wild and wonderful.
Competing for a prize pool of over $200,000 across 25 awards, the finalist entries this year showed an “extraordinary level of creativity and technical skills” according to WOW Head of Competition Sarah Nathan.
“Up close, the intricacy and beauty is othe-scale. You can feel the thought, the labour, and the heart behind every detail. There’s been exceptionally diverse storytelling across all entries,” Sarah says.
Supreme WOW Award winners Dawn Mostow and Ben Gould received the accolade for Tsukumogami, a tribute in latex to Japanese classical ceramics and the mythology of objects. Runner-up to the Supreme WOW Award was 30-time WOW finalist Wellingtonian Fifi Colston with her garment Meine Erste Liebe. Fifi says this will be her last WOW entry. Her creations have been a constant feature of the show since 1990. Judges described her garment as “a work that takes your breath away. A living archive of hundreds of years of artistic technique and a divinely composed ode to love, loss and art.”
The Wētā Workshop Award for Outstanding Design, judged by Wētā Workshop founder and CEO Sir Richard Taylor was won by Cantabrian Cushla O’Connell, for her garment Worn Landscape that features a landscape image made from over 6000 up-cycled buttons. Cushla’s garment also placed first in the Aotearoa section.

Canterbury’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter is a lifeline for rural and remote Canterbury communities, where access is limited and every second counts. In late November, you can soak under the stars at Hanmer Springs and support this lifesaving cause.
On Friday, 28 November, the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa will host a unique late-night event, Night for Flight, to raise funds for the rescue helicopter service that supports some of Canterbury’s most remote communities. From 5pm to 10pm, the award-winning pools will transform with live music, local fare, ra es, a VIP spa event and more – all proceeds going towards the Canterbury Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
“Night for Flight is a celebration of community, resilience, and the chance for us to come together and give something back. Many rural Cantabrians and visitors alike will have a connection to the rescue helicopter service, whether that’s a first-hand experience or that of family or a friend,” says Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa general manager Sarah Wiblin.
Between January to August 2025, the helicopter has been called out for 108 North Canterbury jobs including accidents, medical emergencies, search and rescue missions and time-critical patient transfers, and to 455 missions across wider Canterbury. Sarah says Night for Flight, which aims to raise $25,000, reflects the values of a community that knows the importance of looking after its own.
Hanmer Springs local Juliet Fitzpatrick is a critical care paramedic for the helicopter, who regularly flies missions across Canterbury and the Hurunui District. “All my colleagues know how much our rural communities rely on the rescue helicopter service.”
“I know that for my own community, the rescue helicopter is often the di erence between life and death, and I am privileged to be part of the crew that makes this much of a di erence,” she says. Juliet has worked on the rescue helicopter for a decade, and still admires the “gorgeously remote areas” when called to a back country job. “While we often have to make big decisions in really remote locations, it’s what we train for and it’s so rewarding when that combination of our training, skill and the speed of the helicopter result in a positive outcome for the patient.”

From 25 September, two new regulations took e ect under the Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations. These regulations focus on the actual harms associated with prolonged or inappropriate tethering. They are designed to address situations where dogs are being harmed as a result of being chained or tied up for long periods and to protect vulnerable dogs such as puppies and mothers.
Animal welfare inspectors will have the authority to issue infringement notices when they identify dogs su ering from long-term tying, such as physical injuries, behavioural issues, or restricted movement.
Dog behavioural expert and trainer Maria Alomajan has long campaigned for legislative change.
“This has been very important to me over the last 20 years; I’ve volunteered for Chained Dog Awareness, spoken to former Prime Minister John Key about it, worked with Paw Justice, was invited to an advisory panel by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI), and even two of my pets were ex-chain dogs I rescued,” she says.
Maria says the new measures will make dog owners think twice and arguably improve how they keep their pets. Prolonged tethering causes significant distress and a ects health by limiting freedom to express normal behaviours and escape aversive environments or situations and it contravenes the Five Domains, which are the five basic freedoms in the internationally recognised standards for humane animal treatment. These are freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury, or disease; freedom to express normal behaviour, and
freedom from fear and distress. Maria points out that tethered dogs often cannot express “species typical” behaviours. This can lead to excessive barking, tether-based reactivity/aggression and other behaviours that could endanger the welfare of the dog, the safety of families that own dogs, the public and other animals.
“This is why these laws are necessary, because these adverse consequences of excessive tethering do happen,” she says.
“If temporary tethering is necessary, it can be done in more humane ways.”
This includes using a harness instead of a collar to prevent neck injuries, providing a swivel attachment to avoid tangling, and providing constant access to water, food, and shelter. Most critically, says Maria, is limiting tether time, minimising stress.
Long-term safer alternatives for short-term tethering include:
• Secure fencing: A sturdy fence, allowing dogs freedom to move while keeping them contained.
• Exercise pens or runs: Portable or permanent enclosures providing a safe space for dogs to play and rest without restriction and under shelter.
• Overhead trolley systems: A cable run between two points, attached to a harness, o ers more movement than a fixed tether while preventing escapes.
• Training and regular exercise: Professional training can address issues like reactivity or wandering, combined with daily walks or visits with a playmate for socialisation and physical activity.
A fussy poodle was the trigger for starting an all-natural, hand-crafted dog treat business specialising in big dogs and tough chewers.
It all began with a fussy poodle named Dora and a batch of homemade dried liver treats. Dora’s owner, Tracy Loomes, a dog groomer of 20 years, was simply trying to please her picky eater, until her brother urged her to turn her treats into a business. “If you don’t do something with this, I will,” he told her.
Dora’s Delights was born. The focus of the business is unique, nutritious options for big dogs and tough chewers – Great Danes, Rottweilers, Sta es – often overlooked by mainstream brands. “We o er cow’s legs, pigs’ testicles, cows’ legs… treats no one else does,” Tracy says.
Other canine favourites include pork pizzles, deer antlers, and spleen jerky, the latter handmade using ingredients sourced straight from an Ashburton abattoir with nothing else added.
“You’ll often find me elbow-deep in blood and guts,”
Tracy laughs, “but I’m passionate about giving dogs treats that are natural, digestible, and close to what they’d eat in the wild. There are too many dog treats out there that are bad for dogs, like raw hide that can cause blockages in the animal’s intestines.”
Tracy sells her all-natural dog treats online and at markets. Dora, sadly, is no longer around, so the chief taste tester is now Wilson, her American Sta ordshire Terrier, her most motivated and enthusiastic worker.

Celebrating at home this year and want to showcase your home harvest on the dinner table? Here are four classic crops to plant now – that will prove their worth come the festive season.
Tasty and versatile, pumpkins are easy to grow and can look the part in your garden when trained up a trellis. Plant your seeds point down in a sunny, large spot with nutrient-rich soil, and continuously feed every few weeks with vegetable food. Keep your pumpkin plants well-watered in warm weather.
Meal inspiration: aside from the beloved pumpkin and feta salads, take roasted pumpkin up a notch by drizzling a yoghurt sauce and pine nuts atop to serve as a side dish.
Capsicums brighten up any garden, and any summer salad or roast vegetable dish. Start by choosing your favourite variety, from Californian Wonder and Midas to Sweet Banana and Sweet Conical. Capsicums thrive in warm, sunny spots in soil mixed with organic matter and fertiliser. Aim to keep the roots cool and moist. Capsicums change colour and taste as they mature, so pick at di erent growth stages relative to your flavour preference.
Meal inspiration: utilise capsiscum in fresh salads, or level it up with a summer pasta salad.
A classic Kiwi summer staple, courgettes are delicious in salads, stir-fries, quiches, and roasted or barbecued. Plant seedlings around 50 to 80cm apart in a warm, sunny spot. Prepare soil with compost and sheep pellets, and plant into a layer of vegetable mix. Feed regularly with vegetable food and water for a bountiful harvest.
Meal inspiration: try a shaved courgette salad with stonefruit, or a simple grilled dish seasoned with garlic powder and olive oil.
From cherry to heirloom, early girl to roma, tomatoes make up a key part of our summer diet. Tomatoes need a good period of warm weather to thrive, so don’t worry if you plant a little late. Plant into a specialty potting mix if possible, and utilise stakes to support and dictate growth. Water deeply and often.
Meal inspiration: tomato basil pasta is a favourite for many, and can be made with a range of pasta types. Or, if you’re hosting or bringing a plate, whip up a delicious Caprese salad. All you need is tomatoes, fresh basil, mozzarella, and a sprinkling of pepper and drizzling of olive oil. Light, easy, vibrant.

Imagine paying a million dollars for a house you can’t live in. That’s exactly what happened to one Kiwi entrepreneur, so he built CheckMyBuilder, New Zealand’s first AI-powered risk check tool for homeowners.
fter being left with a $1 million mortgage and an uninhabitable house, Kiwi entrepreneur Anubhav Verma created CheckMyBuilder.co.nz, New Zealand’s first AI-powered risk check tool for homeowners. The platform helps users – homeowners, renovators, lawyers – identify builders linked to fraud, insolvency, or unpaid debts.
CheckMyBuilder scans thousands of fragmented public records, like court filings, company registers, and liquidation notices, and distills them into plain-English risk reports. The AI can spot patterns humans often miss, such as directors hiding failures behind new company names.
“So far, over 1000 New Zealanders have already used CheckMyBuilder to check builders before signing contracts or releasing money,” says Anubhav. “Even lawyers often miss these issues, because the data is hidden in PDFs and spread across multiple systems. The system won’t protect you, so I built one that can.”
For many, building or renovating a home is the biggest financial and emotional investment of their lives. A bad decision can mean years of stress, legal battles or, in Anubhav’s case, a mortgage with no home to live in. By shining a light on red flags before contracts are signed, CheckMyBuilder empowers Kiwis to protect themselves.
“It’s about preventing the heartbreak, the stress on families, and the life disruption that comes with being caught out,” Anubhav says.
“After four years of fighting back, I’ve seen how loopholes let shonky operators get away with too much. This is my way of levelling the playing field.”
The tool is useful not only for new builds but any renovation job, from roofing to kitchens. There’s also Checkbase, a version for businesses like banks and trade suppliers, to reduce credit risk and protect supply chains.
LEONIE FREEMAN CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE PROPERTY COUNCIL
The announcement of an overhaul for the assessment of earthquake-prone buildings is a win for communities, says Property Council chief executive Leonie Freeman.
The Government’s plan to overhaul the assessment of earthquake-prone buildings is a long-awaited reset that addresses the flaws of a regime that has left thousands of buildings empty and communities burdened with unfair costs.
The previous approach, which is centred on rigid percentage ratings under the New Building Standard (NBS), was confusing, disproportionate, and damaging to our towns and cities.
For too long, shifting rules have created uncertainty, paralysing investment and leaving buildings empty across our cities. We’ve long called for seismic standards that are workable, proportionate, and focused on real risk. The old NBS percentage system was arbitrary, with small variations creating major consequences for owners and tenants. The di erence between 66% and 67% NBS could mean whether a building was occupied or left vacant, despite sitting within the margin of error. The system became fixated on numbers that didn’t reflect real safety. Tenants started demanding 80–100% NBS, despite the law defining ‘earthquakeprone’ as below 34%.
The result was particularly tough on smaller towns. Many owners faced bills in the millions, with no clear pathway forward. Instead of strengthening, buildings were abandoned, becoming derelict and putting communities at greater risk.
The new system finally recognises the need for a more targeted, riskbased approach. The old regime was like forcing every car to replace its engine every 10 years, regardless of condition. The new approach inspects each car on its age and state of repair, fixing only what needs attention.
The changes will deliver more targeted, practical outcomes. Recognising that not all regions face the same level of risk is common sense. It allows us to focus resources where they’re needed most – in high-risk areas like Wellington and Napier – while avoiding unnecessary costs in lower-risk regions.
The Property Council has long advocated for a two-tier system that enables greater clarity in seismic decision-making and more stable rules, including a longer review cycle for regulation. While a 20-year review cycle was not adopted, it remains an important goal.
Shifting seismic standards every few years doesn’t just hurt property owners, it undermines communities. We’ve seen schools relocated into temporary classrooms, small businesses forced to close, and billions of dollars in stalled investment because the rules kept changing.
Japan has shown us that stable rules give owners, engineers, and investors the confidence to plan long-term. New Zealand should be no di erent.

As New Zealand’s street art capital, Christchurch is the right and proper place to host The Art of Banksy exhibition.
Christchurch is New Zealand’s coolest city, and its vibrant street art scene transforms every stroll into an open-air gallery. Summer is the perfect time to explore, with blue skies and bold murals around every corner.
This season, the city takes urban culture to new heights with The Art of Banksy exhibition at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre from 17 December 2025 to 27 January 2026 (excluding public holidays). For the first time in the South Island, and the last time in NZ, locals and visitors can experience 150 of the notoriously mysterious artist’s most iconic artworks, including Girl with Balloon and Flower Thrower, which is accompanied by a video interview with Banksy’s former girlfriend, Leonie Laws.
More than an art show, this is a cultural moment that cements Ōtautahi Christchurch’s place as the street art capital of NZ, on the global map.
Our city is on the up, and it’s not by chance. It’s the result of mahi at every level, from community to businesses, we have a special mix going on right now.
At your airport, our role is to build the connectivity that makes all this possible. In recent weeks we’ve shared plenty of great news, Jetstar announced 450,000 Christchurch seats and will join Air NZ flying jets to Hamilton. We’re also seeing extra seats to Auckland, along with more capacity across the Tasman to Melbourne.
By the end of the month, you’ll also be able to fly direct from Christchurch to Adelaide, another brilliant new link for both business and leisure travellers. We’re also delighted that Originair has restarted the service from Blenheim.
These connections are the result of our team working closely with airlines, sharing the story of our vibrant city and thriving region.
Airlines only commit when they’re confident they can sell seats and with the energy, growth and potential we’re seeing now, I have no doubt those seats will be snapped up. Christchurch is rising, and we’re proud to lean into that.
When your sliding door starts sticking, dragging, or refusing to lock properly, replacement might seem like the only option, but repair is nearly always the smarter move.
With more than three decades of engineering experience and over 16 years focused specifically on sliding doors, Stewart Poole is the hands-on expert behind Sliding Door Specialists. Known to many as Mr Ranchslider, he’s built a solid reputation for restoring even the most stubborn doors to better-than-new condition, often at a fraction of the cost of replacing them.
“If it can be fixed, we’ll fix it and usually make it work better than it ever did,” Stewart says.
Thanks to his fully mobile service, Stewart and his team can often complete a full sliding door repair in under two hours. Whether your home features a classic 1970s ranchslider or a more modern unit, their team brings the tools, precision parts, and know-how to get things gliding again.
Sliding door frustrations usually come down to the same culprits: damaged or worn-out rollers, bent tracks, or failing seals. According to Stewart, many homes, especially those built in the ‘70s and ‘80s, are well overdue for attention.
“The typical life span of door rollers and tracks is about 10 to 15 years,” he explains. “When doors start making odd noises, become
hard to move, or just won’t lock right, it’s time for a proper service.”
Unfortunately, many door issues are made worse by DIY fixes or untrained handymen. That’s where Sliding Door Specialists make all the di erence. Their team is fully trained and uses top-quality components specifically suited to each door’s weight and design. Modern replacement wheel systems, including advanced nylon and acetyl rollers, o er two or even four rollers for smoother, longer-lasting operation. Stewart and his team will recommend and install the ideal wheels for your specific door, ensuring it’s properly balanced and securely fitted in the frame.
“We don’t just swap out parts; we fine-tune every door to ensure it glides smoothly, locks securely, and stands up to years of use,” Stewart says.
“Even worn or damaged tracks can be salvaged. Modern doors have a removable aluminum track that can be replaced. Older doors have a built-in track. To repair these, we install a stainless steel ‘Track Cover’, making it as good, or better, than new.”
If your sliding door is driving you crazy, don’t put up with it any longer. Sliding Door Specialists o er free inspections and quotes with no pressure, just practical advice and expert service.

or years now, the team at Priority Projects has made collaborating with clients remaining in situ their speciality. The way in which the team enables ‘business as usual’ to continue while key works are completed is a huge advantage to clients. The latest building to receive their expert attention is in Kingsley Street, Christchurch. Requiring earthquake strengthening, it is home to three commercial tenants that not only needed to remain trading, but also to maintain safe access for the many customers they serve each day.
“We did the majority of work after hours,” says Jason Turner, project manager at Priority Projects. “We also had to leave the carparks available for their clients.” The building needed strengthening to 70% NBS (New Building Standard) by fitting a structural ring beam at high level, K-Braces, and a large ground beam. New fire systems and upgraded accessibility features were added. “The job itself wasn’t complex,” says Jason, “but we needed to do a lot of liaison and communication with the sta of the three a ected businesses, and that is a great forte of our team.”

Don’t miss the opportunity to get behind the scenes of the Superhome Movement at the upcoming pop-up tour and expo on 6 December. It’s your chance to learn about the design and construction of cutting-edge, low carbon, zero carbon, resource-efficient and sustainable homes.
The Superhome Movement has been inspiring beautiful, healthier, more energy efficient, and climate-positive homes for New Zealanders for the last 10 years. Founded to shift the industry beyond sub-par standards, it has become a trusted source of knowledge, advocacy, and innovation.
Balmoral Ōtautahi, the latest Superhome in Redcli s, Christchurch, is a landmark in resilient and sustainable design. Built by Dan Saunders Construction and designed by Bob Burnett Architecture, this hilltop residence replaces a quake-damaged home and raises the bar for future-focused living.
The house combines cuttingedge performance with refined aesthetics. Triple-glazed European joinery, 185mm EcoPanel walls, and a CLT warm roof deliver strength, comfort, and thermal e ciency, achieving an impressive airtightness of 0.56 ACH. Smart systems include mechanical heat recovery ventilation with cooling, hydronic underfloor heating, solar PV with battery storage and EV charging, plus rainwater harvesting.
and solar control. Natural light and airflow are carefully choreographed, creating an uplifting interior anchored in a Japandi-inspired aesthetic that celebrates natural materials and nature-inspired biophilic design.
Designed for flexibility, the home features a two-in-one layout suited to multi-generational living, with a fully independent lower level complete with its own kitchenette, bathroom, and laundry.
Expansive windows frame sweeping views of the Southern Alps while deep eaves and external blinds provide privacy
Sustainability is embedded throughout, from low-carbon concrete foundations to preserved landscaping. The result is a home that is resilient, adaptable, and deeply connected to its environment. Balmoral Ōtautahi stands as proof that from adversity can rise something truly super. For more details visit the project on bbarc.com
Over the past decade, the Superhome Movement has hosted the extremely popular annual Superhome Tours. To make tours more accessible and engaging, Superhome Movement has reshaped the format into a series of pop-up tours throughout the year, showcasing both completed homes and projects under construction. These events are a unique chance to see behind the scenes, touch, and experience the di erence of a truly future-ready Superhome.
The next public tour event is on Saturday 6 December from 11am to 4pm at Ngā Whare Pārara, New Zealand’s first Zero Carbon Superhome, in Somerfield Street, Christchurch, which includes four Superhomes currently under construction at the same address.
Tickets are available via superhome.co.nz. Guided tours and Tour Talks will be held at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm by Bob from Bob Burnett Architecture, Dan from Dan Saunders Construction, and other Superhome designers, builders and partners will be on site to answer questions and showcase sustainable products and services.
Your chance to:
• Meet the Superhome heroes, participants and partners.
• Explore four cutting-edge homes in one location and discover what makes a home truly healthy, energye cient, resilient and future-ready.
• Learn about the latest amazing Superhome design innovations and get access to the brand new Superhome Design Guide.
Superhome Movement, partners and participants more recently delivered webinars on the top 10 principles of better designed and built homes, available to view for free at superhome.co.nz. While many aspire to live in a ‘Best Certified’ Superhome, this is not an economic reality for all. The Certificaton Guide provides the flexibility of base, better or best standards for all target budgets.
The low cost of certification leaves more to spend on a better home. The KISS principle (Keep It Super Simple) Superhome Certification has also reached a new milestone, with Christchurch City Council now allowing certification to be recorded on a property’s LIM report. This adds long-term value and credibility to homes built to a higher standard. Superhomes are worth more from day one, are healthier and warmer, with smaller power bills and better for people and the planet.

Timaru’s Felicity Collier made the 2025 World of WearableArt stage as runnerup for the Aotearoa section – yet her design sought more than acclaim from its audience. Whare Mīere is a catalyst for conversation, inspired by last year’s protests against The Treaty Principles Bill.
“I always felt that when it was my turn to stand up that I would find a way to tautoko (support),” Felicity says. Whare Mīere asks one question: What would The Beehive look like with more Maori representation? “I was so inspired by the 2024 Hīkoi mō te Tiriti. The movement of so many people, not just Māori, to oppose The Treaty Principles Bill was incredible. I saw young people take to social media and say why they were opposing it. Families made signs and stood at their gates to support those walking the length of Aotearoa. Finally, the huge crowd that wrapped around the beehive like a majestic taniwha.”
Felicity recalls feeling “icky” about the bill – she wanted to take a stand. Art was her method and the WOW stage her medium. “A Māori Beehive would reflect tikanga,
manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, kotahitanga. Haka! It would look like us. It would sound like us. It would be ours too.”
With a passion born in childhood because of a creative whānau, and a skillset honed over 25 years in the hairdressing industry, Felicity had the means and momentum, yet WOW garments are known to push boundaries, and their maker out of their comfort zone. “I spent months thinking about the construction… learning the basics of macramé from YouTube or Pinterest, and asking whānau to show me raranga (Māori weaving) techniques,” she remembers. “I wanted to ‘weave my intentions’ into my garment. I had notes on the wall to keep me mindful about what each section meant. It was so cathartic.”
The roadblock was time. She couldn’t put the management and clients of her award-winning sustainable Timaru salon, Cocoon Hair Design, on hold. “I was going to bed at 2am, waking at 6am to weave then working 9am to 8pm and straight home to weave. Everyone was doing wellness checks because I was so distracted and hadn’t spoken to anyone for weeks. They knew I was doing something special but didn’t know what it was or what it was for.”
Felicity’s entrenched history in the hair industry from early beginnings in Aotearoa to international hot spots like Dublin, London and Sydney set her up to continue creating and innovating upon her return. She launched Cocoon Hair Design to combine artistry with eco-conscious practices, and became Joico’s New Zealand ambassador soon after. With her finger in almost every hairdressing pie, Felicity often travels alongside charity Breast Cancer Cure as a hair director to help produce their nationwide shows and events. At 18 years old, Felicity lost her mother to breast cancer – now she gets to “raise money for research in the most fabulous way”, she explains. “Editorial competitions and fashion shows are where my heart truly lies – I love the fast-paced energy and dynamic creativity of the fashion world.”
I have so many ideas for entries! The thing with WOW is you need a lot of time. I’ve always wanted to enter the Bizarre Bra section. As a bra wearer I have experience but absolutely no idea how to make one.

Are you a budding investor?
Property management expert Mark Stone shares one simple hack.
Welcome to an update on the New Zealand property market, investor insights, seasonal reminders, and – our favourite – a quote to ponder.
We’re often contacted by young investors looking for a bit of a steer. Eager to get onto the property ladder, but finding themselves ‘swamped’ by all the listings out there. How do you tell the great ones from the lemons? One of the key things we o er is how to quickly assess gross yield. It’s simply the relationship between the rent and the purchase price — you work it out by taking the annual rent, dividing it by the purchase price and multiplying by 100 to get a percentage.
As a rule of thumb, if you’re fully debt funding the purchase (based on today’s short-term interest rates):
• At 6.5% or above, the property should just about wash its own face.
• Around 6% and the yield is marginal — it could go either way depending on expenses.
• Anything under that and you should expect to top it up each week.
That said, don’t expect to see too many properties at those levels. With house price growth over the years, it’s getting harder to find rentals that are cash flow positive right o the bat. The real trick is buying something with room to add value, lift the rent and improve the gross return over time.
So for all of you out there thinking about your next purchase, this little check might come in handy too.
We’ll leave you with a quote. “In the middle of every di culty lies opportunity,” - Albert Einstein.

Richard Bolton is a watercolour artist captivated by the medium’s luminosity and transparency. Originally inspired by England’s fens and rivers, he has painted landscapes worldwide, including China, Tibet, Taiwan, and Israel. Since moving to Geraldine in 2003, he has focused on the region’s dramatic mountains and rivers.
“Many of my paintings draw inspiration from local views around Geraldine. The scenes change with the seasons, and I notice it most amongst the countryside in which I live. I work in watercolour which has always been a very popular way of painting landscape, it's fluid nature seems to work so well in this area.
Amongst my paintings are winter views of the four peaks with summer views. Talbot Street is painted in the Autumn when the tree lined street turns to oranges and yellows. Visits to the high country of the Rangitata provide the grandeur of the mountains.”
