This marks the first year colleges were eligible for the program, and Mohawk College is proud to be among the recipients. Mohawk’s QES project aims to build healthcare capacity in the critically under-resourced field of pediatric echocardiography in Guyana, where currently there are no cardiac sonographers trained in pediatric sonography. The project’s objective is to equip local healthcare providers with diagnostic imaging skills for early detection and management of critical illness in infants and children in rural and urban communities.

New Steeves Family Innovation Fund seeds student, faculty research partnerships

Glen and Heather Steeves and family recently donated $250,000 to create the inaugural Steeves Family Innovation Fund, with the hopes of boosting the number of applied research projects Mohawk College students and faculty can undertake every year. Successful projects will receive between $10,000 and $20,000.

THE COLLEGE

Mohawk College is one of Canada’s leading colleges. The College’s history dates back to 1947 with the establishment of the Provincial Institute of Textiles, which later became the Hamilton Institute of Technology (HIT) in 1957. Ten years later, in 1967, the HIT was incorporated as the newly established Mohawk College, one of 24 Ontario Colleges. Today, Mohawk College proudly delivers a quality education and college experience to over 30,000 full-time, part-time, continuing education and apprenticeship students. For nearly 60 years, Mohawk College has been fulfilling the needs of employers in our communities and transforming the lives of more than 175,000 highly skilled and future-ready graduates.

THE DEGREE HOOD

Academic hoods are a tradition that can be traced back to medieval Europe where they were initially practical pieces of clothing used as head coverings or shoulder capes. Over time the hood evolved to become a symbol of academic achievement with variations in colour and designed representing the degree a graduate has earned and the institution they graduated from.

THE LIRIPIPE

The liripipe is a medieval European symbol of academic achievement dating back to the 8th century. It marks the achievement of excellence according to each student’s chosen program and symbolizes their membership into the international community of scholars.
