Northrop & Johnson - Established in 1949
An international yachting company and one of the largest worldwide, Northrop & Johnson is the quintessential full-service yacht brokerage. Since 1949, we have offered discerning clientele an innovative, sophisticated approach to all aspects of the yachting lifestyle. Shortly after World War II, Jim Northrop and George Johnson formed a partnership to provide a quality yacht brokerage service to their close circle of yachting companions on Long Island Sound. The first Northrop & Johnson office opened in 1949 at 366 Madison Avenue in lower Manhattan and served as the foundation for the fledgling brokerage house. Here began Northrop & Johnson’s trueblue “Yankee” heritage, which is reflected in the company’s reputation for honesty and integrity. The word about the “Gentlemen Brokers” of Northrop & Johnson spread throughout the tight-knit yachting community of New York and created the platform on which the company’s sterling reputation was built. By the early 1960s, Northrop & Johnson had expanded with branch offices in Stamford, Connecticut; Miami, Florida; and Marblehead, Massachusetts.
In 1971, Northrop & Johnson expanded into Europe with an office based in Cannes, France. By the late 1970s, additional offices were added in Newport, Rhode Island; Puerto Buenos, Spain; and St. Petersburg, Florida.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Northrop & Johnson became the premier large yacht brokerage in the United States. Many of the industry’s most influential names began their careers with Northrop & Johnson, and today we are recognized at every major yachting venue throughout the world. Our strategic alliances and extensive network provide abundant support and representation for the vessels in our fleet in every major yachting center.

Motor & Sailing Yachts for Charter YachtDirectoryfrom page 114
What makes a superyacht charter so special? There is no one answer to this, as chartering a luxury yacht is the ultimate vacation due to a combination of factors. From the yacht itself to the choice of cruising ground, the first-class service and the experiences to be had both on board and ashore, all the elements combined make for an unforgettable holiday experience. The great appeal is that your itinerary is bespoke to you and incorporates all the elements that are important to you and your guests.
Ask any charterer what it is that attracts them to this style of holiday and they will tell you that it is all about the service, the ultimate privacy, gastronomic delights, island-hopping itineraries and watersports galore. And that would only be the start…from deciding where you want to go to what you want to see, what foods you want to savor, what activities you would like to pursue and where you would like to step ashore, it’s all about doing things your way.
The two main factors that will affect your charter are the type of yacht and the destination. There are no hard and fast rules as to which to choose first – yacht or cruising ground – but the time of year during which you are planning to charter may well determine which destinations and yachts are available to you. If you have your heart set on a particular area then you will need to focus on the yachts that charter in that area.
Although most luxury yachts have certain details in common, they are all unique and offer a range of different features. For example, a traditional displacement motor yacht is ideal for a family charter, while a sailing yacht would be the best choice for a real yachting enthusiast. Our Yacht Guide on page 112 will help you decipher which types of yacht are most suitable for you and your charter party. From there the Yacht Directory will give you information on yacht sizes, guest capacity, price, leisure facilities and where they are available. These 77 yachts are just a sample of the world’s most prestigious yachts. We have access to the world market of 3,000-plus vessels.
All of Northrop & Johnson’s charter brokers have an encyclopedic knowledge of the best yachts and cruising grounds. The moment you make your first inquiry, your experienced broker will guide you through the entire process. From the initial yacht and destination selection to the paperwork required to secure your preferred yacht and liaising with your captain and crew up until the moment you disembark, your charter broker will be available at any time to discuss your questions and concerns. Simply follow our Four Steps For Chartering Successfully and leave the details to us. Sit back, relax and enjoy the experience.
Steps for Chartering Successfully
While turning the pages of the CruisingGuidesand YachtDirectory take some time to think about the type of experience you are looking for from your yacht charter. What style of charter and type of yacht would best suit the size and character of your charter party? What time of year would you like to cruise? Which cruising grounds are the most appealing? As you browse through the Yacht Directory bear in mind that most yachts only charter in specific areas. With that in mind, our CruisingGuidesprofiles a vast selection of destinations, with expert tips and cruising itineraries to help you along the way.
2 Armed with a few ideas, the next step is to contact your Northrop & Johnson charter broker. All of our charter experts are passionate about what they do. They know all the yachts available and will craft a suggested itinerary based on your individual tastes and preferences. They will begin by suggesting yachts based on amenities, activities offered, and, of course availability in the right cruising area for you.
3 Once you have chosen the most suitable yacht, your charter broker will negotiate the most competitive terms and prepare all the necessary paperwork to secure the yacht for your desired destination and dates.
4 Your charter broker will liaise with the yacht’s captain and together they will arrange every detail. From the logistics before, during and after the charter, to the menu choices, cruising locations and any special requirements, they will ensure that you and your guests have the most incredible and unforgettable holiday.

The combination of volcanic islands, desert landscapes and limestone cliffs set against brilliant blue waters in the Gulf of California, make for a voyage of discovery. It is only possible to fully explore this remote corner of the globe by boat, and being so remote, it remains unspoiled and uncrowded.

Reveling in rare isolation 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galápagos archipelago comprises 12 major islands and a handful of smaller islets, each displaying its own unique flora, fauna and rare animal species. Forever associated with Darwin, they are both a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. The islands are extremely protected and the number of yachts able to cruise these waters annually is limited. Itineraries are also provided by the Parque Nacional Galápagos, the governing body of the islands, advising where yachts are able to cruise and where guests are able to explore.

DAVID LEE ROTH
Which type of yacht is right for you?
Before you browse through the stunning portfolio of yachts in search of the best yacht for your charter party, here is an at-a-glance guide to the different types of yacht available.
Large, Modern Motor Yacht
Spacious, stable and designed for pure comfort, large, modern motor yachts are suitable for families, first-time charterers, and large charter groups. Due to their capacity for interior and exterior volume, the larger motor yachts are usually capable of playing host to a range of amenities including Jacuzzis, swimming pools, entertainment systems, gymnasiums, plentiful dining and relaxation areas, and a variety of toys.
Performance Motor Yacht
High-performance motor yachts are a popular choice for those who are looking for the adrenalin and cool factor that goes with a fast performance yacht. With a focus on speed and comfort, this type of yacht is ideal for those looking to cover a lot of cruising ground in a shorter period. Suitable for shorter charters and smaller groups.
Expedition Yacht
Unique and versatile, expedition yachts are one of the safest types of yacht available to charter. Powerful and stable, they are designed for autonomous long-range cruising to remote destinations, many of which might be unreachable by any other means.
4 Sportfishing Yacht
Sportfishing yachts are designed to withstand long periods of time at sea. The majority are fast performance vessels, similar to the performance motor yacht, however their amenities are tailored toward big game fishing and they come kitted out with everything you might require when exploring the world’s remotest fishing grounds.
5 Classic Sailing Yacht
The allure of a classic sailing yacht appeals to those who want a genuine sailing experience and are looking to capture the real romance and thrill of yachting. They don’t usually have quite the level of luxury and comfort of a motor yacht, but for genuine sailors there is no other choice.
6 Modern Sailing Yacht
For those looking for the amenities of a motor yacht but with the undisputed appeal of sailing, a modern sailing yacht is a good compromise. The most popular in this category are those with the size, comfort and facilities of a motor yacht but with the flexibility to put up the sails and turn off the motor on occasion.
7 Catamaran
Catamarans provide a great combination of sail and motor. Owing to their low draft, they are particularly popular with charterers looking to access shallow-water areas such as The Bahamas or the South Pacific, or those who want the thrill and enjoyment of sailing without the inconvenience of heeling at a 30-degree angle (better for families, for example).

While the idea of mixing tea with rum originated more than 400 years ago, this limited-reserve dark rum is the first of its kind. Chai Rum’s conception was inspired by a Dutch admiral’s 17th-century idea: “the combination of tea with rum is most delightful.” So, the makers of Chai Rum began to marry eight- to 10-year-old limited-reserve rums with two types of high-altitude teas and more than 15 tropical, aromatic botanicals to create the most sophisticated sipping rum in the world.
The process of making Akal Chai Rum is a carefully guarded trade secret; it has been recognized as the first, true innovation in rum production in more than a century by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. This spirit has a 95-point rating from the Tasting Panel in the United States, which puts it in a highly exclusive category.
Created to be enjoyed as a sipping product, the rum’s complex profile attracted the attention of the world’s top mixologists and aficionados, providing them with a new inspiration for cocktails and elevating the art of rum mixology. Through this, the experience of “The World Distilled in a Glass,” was born. You can visit it at www.chairum.com or on YouTube (Akal Chai Rum). You will discover Chai Rum’s signature smoke service “The Mariners Flight,” and cocktails that take you from East to West, across seasons, cultures and time. You can also view our current Cocktail Collection at chairum.eu/menus. Chai Rum is proud to be a global strategic partner of Northrop & Johnson, and share with the company and its clients a love of the world and adventure.
