WINGS OVER THE TRI-CITIES:

From Naval Training Base to Regional Gateway

High above the Columbia Basin, a quiet sentinel stand, Pasco’s old control tower, bearing witness to nearly a century of aviation history. Once part of one of the United States Navy’s busiest training stations in World War II, the site has transformed into Tri-Cities Airport, with a revitalized Pasco Aviation Museum, a must see, preserving those stories for current and future generations.

EARLY AVIATION ROOTS

The story begins long before the roar of warplanes. In 1911, Charles A. Zornes, an early aviation pioneer, brought experimental aircraft to the Tri-Cities. He leased land at Osprey Point, over by the Columbia River, and built and flew wood-and-cloth biplanes. That flying school was one of the earliest in the Pacific Northwest. The Tri-Cities also played a role in commercial aviation. In 1926, Varney Airlines (which would later become part of United) began the first contract airmail flight between Elko, Nevada, and Pasco, marking another notable milestone.

THE BIRTH OF NAVAL AIR STATION IN THE TRI-CITIES

In February 1942, with World War II in full swing, the U.S. Navy purchased more than 2,200 acres near the small existing Pasco airport for some $5,000. The rationale? Move operations inland, out of range of potential Pacific attacks. Thus NAS Pasco was born. Initially, the station’s role was two-fold: primary pilot training using aircraft like the Stearman “Kaydet” biplanes, and aircraft repair for airplanes returning from Pacific operations. Soon it expanded to include more advanced training, with pilots being transitioned to newer aircraft such as the Grumman F6F Hellcat and the TBF Avenger.

NAS Pasco proved exceptionally busy during the war. Despite cold and cloudy winters, its weather and location allowed training operations yearround. At its peak, nearly 2,000 cadets were trained here. It also has a special place in U.S. Navy history; it was the first naval base to house WAVES (Women

Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) on base. These womenserved in various roles including as “ferry pilots,” delivering planes to remote regions including Alaska and Russia.

POST-WAR TRANSITION AND GROWTH

After the war, in 1947, NAS Pasco was decommissioned as a full Naval facility. The Navy transferred ownership to the City of Pasco for one dollar, but with conditions: the Navy retained training rights, so flights and military activity would

continue in some form. Over time, the airport matured into a regional commercial hub. In 1963, the Port of Pasco assumed ownership. By 1966, a new terminal building was in place, as civilian air traffic and aviation services increased. Further expansions took place: in 1986, the terminal, parking, aircraft apron and access roads were improved and enlarged; in the early 2000s more modernization was done; and a major $42 million terminal renovation between 2014-2017 roughly doubled terminal space, added new gates, baggage claim areas, rental car facilities, food and retail, and modern security systems. By 2023, Tri-Cities Airport had a record year of passenger traffic, over 872,000 travelers. That growth underscores how far the field has come from its humble beginnings.

PRESERVING MEMORY: THE PASCO AVIATION MUSEUM

While the airport kept evolving, one physical relic of its WWII role remained, the control tower built in 1942. By 2011, it was at risk of demolition. But local volunteers, aviation aficionados, and the nonprofit Pacific Northwest Aviation Museum rose to the challenge. They campaigned to “Save the Old Navy Tower.” Restoration began in 2013. The tower, located at 4102 Stearman Avenue, sits on the east side of the airport. The renovation was done carefully, using original 1942 plans to retain architectural authenticity. Floors were rebuilt or repaired, systems like plumbing and electrical updated, exhibits planned, and volunteers contributed artifacts, stories, and sweat. In August 2019, the Pasco Aviation Museum opened to the public. Exhibits include what a WWII era barracks bedroom might have looked like, memorabilia from training pilots, equipment, photographs, and displays about local contributions like the “Day’s Pay” campaign (where Tri-Cities residents donated a day’s pay to sponsor a B-17 bomber during WWII). In recent years, attention has

turned to expanding exhibit space (upper floors of the tower), improving accessibility, and preserving both the control tower and the adjacent hangar. In 2024, the tower and hangar were entered in the Washington State Heritage Register, recognizing their historic and cultural importance.

TODAY & LOOKING FORWARD

Today, Tri-Cities Airport operates as a modern regional airport, balancing its dual legacy: carrying on commercial and civilian flights, while still being used occasionally for military training, and preserving its history with the Aviation Museum.
