Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia. All places on so many travellers’ bucket lists. I was thrilled to embark on an epic journey aboard Seabourn Encore and spent two weeks exploring some of the key sights in Southeast Asia.
From walking around Singapore’s majestic Gardens by the Bay and swimming off secluded Thai islands to exploring Vietnam’s war history in Ho Chi Minh City and sampling local delicacies in Kuala Lumpur’s street markets, this cruise gave me a taste of the region and I’ve been dying to go back ever since.
The restaurants aboard Encore served up locally-inspired dishes and ‘themed’ culinary evenings, the entertainment was spectacular and the whole vibe on board was laid-back luxury.
The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly getting to experience the incredible ‘Caviar in the Surf’ event on the beautiful island of Koh Kood, AKA the closest I have ever come to paradise.
After a few hours of relaxing, snorkelling and paddleboarding, the caviar was ready and everyone swarmed like bees to honey! Champagne was flowing, tropical fish were nibbling at the crumbs and the atmosphere was amazing. There was a buzz in the air as everyone was marveling at how surreal the experience was.
While it may seem odd to stand in the ocean waiting for your turn to take a cracker with some caviar on it from a butler on a surfboard, this is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

THE DEPTHS OF INDULGENCE
Seabourn’s expedition sisters Venture and Pursuit have brought a new kind of luxury to the waterline: two custom U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7 submersibles aboard each ship, designed to deliver small-group, once-in-a-lifetime dives beneath the surface. These subs carry six guests plus a pilot and are integrated into the ships’ programme to offer close-up views of reefs, wrecks and marine life that ordinary tenders simply can’t reach.
Technically impressive, the Cruise Sub 7 – 300 is battery-powered, certified by classification societies and engineered for continuous operations of several hours. It is rated to descend to about 300 metres (984 ft), giving passengers a genuine deep-sea perspective through large acrylic spheres that provide nearunobstructed, 360° viewing.
Safety is central to the experience. U-Boat Worx highlights extensive classlevel certification, multiple redundancy systems and long endurance testing; the subs are fitted with life-support, emergency-buoy and ballast systems, and automated safeguards designed to return the vehicle to the surface if action is not taken by the pilot. These design features — plus routine maintenance and pilot training — underpin the high dive-completion rates reported during Antarctic seasons.
Operationally, submarine deployments are conditional: itinerary icons flag sailings where subs may be offered, but use depends on sea state, visibility and the Captain’s discretion and are therefore not guaranteed on every sailing. When conditions permit, a dedicated support boat and expedition team coordinate launch, recovery and guest briefings to ensure smooth, safe operations.
