Dear Alumni and Friends,

I begin my fifth year as dean of the Law School I so love, proud about who Seton Hall Law is and continues to be – a collection of outstanding people invested in the success of all who pass through our doors. One Student at a Time guides every interaction our faculty, administration, security personnel, and cafeteria colleagues have with our students. We seek to ensure that all students thrive and discover a passion that will sustain them through their professional lives. This commitment explains our graduates’ success on the bar, their launch into fulfilling careers, and their strong loyalty when they join you as Seton Hall Lawyers.

We are growing again – we graduated 139 JD students in May and welcomed 216 for the new year. Our graduate program numbers over 300 students. And we are hiring tremendously talented faculty to produce the next generation of Seton Hall Lawyers.

None of this is possible without your support – you hire our graduates, mitigate students’ financial needs, and provide mentorship. Your financial generosity was record-setting last year. The gifts from O’Toole Scrivo, the DeCotiis firm, and Professor Ambrosio and his wife are transformational. We are investing well, ensuring that our curriculum reflects the evolving world our students enter upon graduation. This edition of the Seton Hall Law magazine showcases our diverse and talented faculty, with a special focus on our newest additions.

None of our success would be possible without strong and supportive leadership from our University president. Dr. Mary Meehan was an outstanding interim president. She demonstrated unwavering support of our vision to produce exceptional lawyers. We owe her a debt of gratitude as she moves on to the next chapter in her career. Dr. Joseph Nyre now assumes the helm to build upon the foundation that Dr. Meehan fought so righteously to lay and maintain. Dr. Nyre welcomed our incoming 1L students at Orientation. His message to the class captured the Seton Hall Law spirit, and spoke directly to the impact you make to continue our rich tradition and legacy. “Seton Hall Law alums devote time, talent and resources to our Law School because they have seen firsthand its capacity to improve the world.”

The goal of the magazine is not only to highlight your accomplishments over the past year, but more importantly to demonstrate the impact your engagement can have upon our mission. My hope is that after reading this edition you will be inspired to engage with us and become a force for change.

Forces Change for NEW FACULTY

Seton Hall Law’s mission above all else is to provide an outstanding education. Coming in a close second, our faculty aspires to positively impact law and policy through research and law reform. We are growing again and that means we are hiring the next generation of teachers and scholars who will perpetuate our mission. New faculty have joined Seton Hall Law over the last two years, embracing Seton Hall Law’s ethos of One Student at a Time in and out of the classroom.

Professors Michael Coenen, Heather Payne, and Brian Murray joined the Seton Hall Law faculty at the beginning of the 2018-19 semester. Professor Coenen, who joins Seton Hall Law from LSU, is already known nationally as a Constitutional Law powerhouse. Professor Payne, who comes from UNC, has unparalleled knowledge of energy and environmental law, and Professor Murray, who most recently taught at Temple, is an expert in Criminal Law.

“My hope is that our students will develop a sound conceptual understanding of the subjects I teach – constitutional law, administrative law, and other areas of public-law doctrine - along with a practical skill-set that enables them to reason and write about these subjects in a clear and persuasive way,” says Professor Coenen. “By encouraging our students to reflect on their own values, goals, and professional identities, they will be well-situated to pursue happy and fulfilling careers in the law upon receiving their Seton Hall Law degrees.”

Professor Payne’s research seeks to drive long-term sustainable shifts that balance environmental and economic objectives. She aspires “to positively impact the debate regarding energy and the environment and unlock the potential for Seton Hall Law to emerge as a leading voice for energy and environmental law and policy. Air and water quality impact everyone; and coastal adaptation, resiliency, and transitioning to the electricity grid of the future will become ever more important.”

Mirroring the values of Seton Hall Law, Professor Murray is eager to support students as they become “lawyers with integrity, who are loyal to their clients, communities, families, and friends, and who are engaged with the most important legal questions of the day,” says Professor Murray, who intends to help students and the community understand what issues the criminal justice system is currently faced with and how best to “craft just responses” to current and future problems. “As a professor, my aim is to inspire students to think critically about how legal questions are not purely technical, greatly impact the personal lives of those that the law purports to serve, and to comprehend and appreciate how the law implicates history, tradition, issues of justice, and so much more of everyday life.”

Professors Jacob Elberg and Deborah Schander joined Seton Hall Law in January 2019.

Professor Elberg, most recently, an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, specializes in Health Law, Health Care Fraud and Abuse, Evidence, and Data Analytics. His areas of interest include corporate crime and compliance, the role of various actors in the enforcement of health care fraud laws and regulations, and criminal justice policy.

“I anticipate that my background will provide a unique opportunity for students to learn not only about the key statutes and case law relating to the various classes I teach, but also to gain insight into life as a practicing lawyer,” says Professor Elberg. “Whether teaching Health Law, Evidence, or Data Analytics, I pull from my 11 years as an AUSA to bring the topics to life and prepare Seton Hall Law students to be leaders when they take on their own cases after graduation.”

Professor Deborah Schander was named to the newly inaugurated Center for Information and Technology, which houses the library, Information Technology, Law Practice Technology, and Educational Technology.

Shifting to a more technology-focused way of learning and researching, the Center strives to enhance student experiences. Professor Schander envisions the Center for Information and Technology “as the heart of the law school experience for students, from being a welcoming and comfortable place to study to a resource for all their research, technology, and study needs. Our goal is to meet the individual needs of each student—be it an incoming 1L or a recent grad, online or in-person. We strive for each student to become knowledgeable and proficient in the research and technology skills needed to succeed in today’s legal environment.”

Professors Jennifer Oliva and Ilya Beylin joined the Law School in July 2019. Professor Katherine Moore joined the faculty in 2017.

Professor Oliva comes to Seton Hall Law from West Virginia School of Law. She is a legal expert in health, FDA, and evidence law. A graduate of the United States Military Academy, she was elected as a Rhodes and Truman Scholar and was recently selected as the 2019 Ike Skelton Award Winner by the Truman Scholarship Foundation and a 2019 Weit Life Science Law Scholar. Professor Oliva is the 20192020 Chair-Elect of the American Association of Law Schools Section on Law and Mental Disability.

Healthcare and evidence law can both be very “dynamic and complex,” according to Professor Oliva. She focuses her research on laws and policies that obstruct access to mental health and substance use disorder treatment for vulnerable populations, health data privacy, veteran health, unreliable ‘scientific’ evidence, and the procedural and substantive problems infecting mass tort public health litigation. “As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, ‘the first wealth is health’ and, in the United States, our population health statistics prove that wealth often dictates health-related outcomes. My goal is to work with Seton Hall Law’s world-class health law team to develop highly-qualified, creative, and thoughtful healthcare lawyers who will well-serve the nation as healthcare law and policy thought leaders in the years to come.”

Professor Beylin comes to Seton Hall Law as an expert in financial and business law. His scholarship combines legal analysis, data driven observation, attention to institutional dynamics, economic theory and pragmatism. He previously served as general counsel at AngelList, and its crowdfunding offshoot, Republic, clerked for the Honorable Stephen F. Williams on the D.C. Circuit, and practiced corporate law with leading New York law firms.

“Through my teaching and involvement at Seton Hall Law, I intend to make business law more accessible and meaningful to the student body,” says Professor Beylin, formerly a professor at NYU Law School. “While the subject is attenuated from every day life, particularly in our younger years, how businesses function powerfully shapes our experience as savers, employees, consumers, managers, and participants within a complex economy. My goal is to develop students’ understanding of how businesses are organized, governed and operated, and particularly, the roles of private and public law in managing business conduct.”

Professor Katherine Moore is the founding director of the Health Justice Clinic in the Center for Social Justice. She has expertise in disability law, health law, family law, and poverty law. Previously Professor Moore served as an Acting Assistant Professor at New York University School of Law and a staff attorney at The Bronx Defenders Family Defense Practice.

“I bring an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to client representation,” says Professor Moore of her eagerness to teach the next generation of lawyers in the Health Justice Clinic. “Students will be trained in a wide variety of health-related legal issues while emphasizing the skills needed for interdisciplinary work. I have confidence that students will be able to learn the substantive law hands-on in the clinic, and also that they will see the value of working closely with professional partners to accomplish their clients’ goals.”

Adding to its cohort of professors teaching Introduction to Lawyering are Assistant Professors of Legal Practice Kathryn Quaglia ’00, Jacqueline Pirone Palumbo ’04, Karla Foy, Melanie Perez-Vellios and Adjunct Professor of Legal Practice, Ricardo Little. No strangers to Seton Hall Law, former students Professors Kathryn Quaglia and Jacqueline Pirone Palumbo are back to serve their alma mater.

Professor Kathryn Quaglia additionally has taught a variety of online in the Law School’s M.S.J. program. She has practiced law at K&L Gates and served as a legal intern at the law firm of Epstein Becker & Green in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Seton Hall Law, she served as a law clerk to Justice Virginia Long of the New Jersey Supreme Court.

As a professor and proud alumna of Seton Hall Law, I will continue to forge connections among students, alumni, and the Law School community and emphasize to students that they are part of a greater network of graduates and friends who seek to ensure their success.

“When I became a student at Seton Hall Law over twenty years ago, I knew at the time that I had joined an exceptional community of attorneys. My professors were instrumental to my success and taught me valuable lessons that two decades later I plan to impart to my first-year Lawyering students,” recalls Professor Quaglia of applying her first-hand experience as a student to present day teaching. “In addition to learning the skills necessary to analyze the law and write for any audience, I want each student to take from my classroom the confidence to approach assignments with enthusiasm, and to welcome each obstacle as an opportunity for growth.”

Professor Jacqueline Pirone Palumbo teaches in the Legal Education Opportunities (LEO) program and is also Director of Appellate Advocacy and Gressman Moot Court Programs. She is Of Counsel to the firm Kirmser, Lamastra, Cunningham & Skinner, House Counsel for Chubb Insurance Companies and was previously an Associate at Jackson Lewis, LLP.

“As a professor and proud alumna of Seton Hall Law, I will continue to forge connections among students, alumni, and the Law School community and emphasize to students that they are part of a greater network of graduates and friends who seek to ensure their success” explains Professor Pirone Palumbo. “In doing so, I am eager to witness Seton Hall’s Law’s legacy of service to others continue with current students as they graduate and give back to the Law School and those who follow in their footsteps in the profession of law.”

Professor Karla Foy teaches Lawyering and serves as the Associate Director of the Academic Success program. She has practiced Education Law in various contexts and has managed and maintained a general law practice in Hackensack, New Jersey since 2005. Prior to coming to Seton Hall Law, Professor Foy served in the Office of the General Counsel of the United States Department of Education and has worked for the New York University Equity Assistance Center.

“Bringing my varied and extensive practice experiences to the classrooms of Lawyering students will ensure that their fundamental doctrinal courses are complemented by practical skills during their very impressionable 1L year,” says Professor Foy. “With forward thinking of post-graduation, I will educate and better inform all students about the bar exam process so that they fully understand how best to prepare, study for, and successfully tackle this monumental moment in their legal careers.”

Professor Melanie Perez-Vellios is the Associate Director of Intro to Lawyering and serves Fellows in the LEO program. Prior to joining Seton Hall Law, Professor Perez-Vellios was Of Counsel to a mid-size New Jersey law firm specializing in employment and education law. Professor Perez-Vellios previously served as contributing author for the launch of XpertHR, a database for human resource professionals focused on federal and state employment law compliance, and best practices for employers. Following graduation from law school, Professor Perez-Vellios was an Associate at Reed Smith LLP.

“I facilitate and develop an academically rigorous legal practice program, challenging students to work beyond perceived limitations and promoting continued intellectual growth. My pedagogical focus centers on joint productive activity and discourse, maximizing learning in an open, collaborative, and stimulating environment,” explains Professor Perez-Vellios, aiming to use her practice experience to teach fundamental legal writing and analysis skills, professional habits, and interpersonal skills vital for success in the legal profession. “My hope is to develop students into future attorneys who are dynamic thinkers possessing high professional standards and a strong work ethic, and who are compassionate about their contributions to the legal profession and the greater good.”

Professor Ricardo Little spent the majority of his legal career at the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. Professor Little also served as the Executive Director of the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund Authority and the Director of the state’s Crime Victims Compensation Office. His law career began as an associate at Kraft & Hughes and at Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti, concentrating in public finance.

“I am particularly concerned about having students appreciate that there are myriad ways to use the law to help others,” says Professor Little who urges intellectual curiosity among his students. “The areas of law in which I practiced most were areas that I knew almost nothing about when I was a law student. I therefore encourage students to be curious about the ways in which they may be able to use their legal training to ethically protect and improve individual and public interests.”

Seton Hall Law Loses

THREE EMERITI FACULTY

Seton Hall Law suffered the loss of three of its most valued former faculty this year.

John J. Gibbons

Judge Gibbons began his career in the 1950s working at the law firm now known as Gibbons, P.C. That decade, he also served as a founding member of the Seton Hall Law School faculty. Judge Gibbons’ career in the law was animated by his strong Catholic faith, making Seton Hall Law a fitting academic home. Evidence of his faith in action was his lead role in 1967 organizing attorneys to help those unable to afford legal representation during the Newark uprising; he also served on the commission that investigated the causes of the rebellion in which more than twenty-five people died. His role in this episode of Newark’s history brought Gibbons to the attention of many. He was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1969, and served as Chief from 1987-90 when he “retired.” This would be the first of three retirements in Gibbon’s career. In the 1990’s, then-Dean Ronald Riccio brought Gibbons back to Seton Hall Law as a full-time tenured professor. Simultaneously, Gibbons worked with his former law firm to establish the John J. Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest and Constitutional Law which has performed significant work in the public’s interest since its inception. The Gibbons Fellowship soon became a feeder of professors to Seton Hall Law, each of whom was deeply impacted by their work with Gibbons, as evidenced by their continuing dedication to public interest work. An historically important scholar in constitutional law, Judge Gibbons published the definitive article on the history of the Eleventh Amendment in the Columbia Law Review. His impact at the Law School will be visible for generations; future students will see his legacy from the Gibbons Fellowship, the Gibbons Moot Court Room, and the Gibbons Criminal Law Moot Court competition hosted each year at Seton Hall Law. Judge Gibbons retired from the faculty in 1997, whereupon he returned to the law firm where he started his career, which was renamed Gibbons PC.

E. Judson Jennings

Professor Jennings began his career in public interest law as one of the original “storefront lawyers” at Legal Services in New York City, as well as at Columbia University Welfare Law Center, and Legal Services for the Elderly Poor. For more than 10 years, he was one of the original cohort of volunteers at The Door Youth Services Center, providing legal services for at-risk juveniles. After serving as a Clinical instructor at NYU School of Law’s Urban Law Clinic, he began his long teaching career at Seton Hall Law with a focus on civil litigation subjects. A winner of the Professor of the Year award on multiple occasions, students recall Professor Jennings just as much for his humor as they will the high quality of instruction. Academics remember him as a pioneering thinker in the area of law and technology and as a scholar in the areas of constitutional and immigration law. But to those who saw the Law School’s move from the “trailers” to its current site at One Newark Center, Professor Jennings will always be remembered for the extraordinary work he brought to designing a building which has served as the Seton Hall Law campus for three decades.

John Copeland Nagle

Professor Nagle was a professor at Seton Hall Law from 1994 to 1998, before joining the faculty of Notre Dame Law School. He was prolific scholar who wrote in the fields of legislation, administrative law, environmental law, property, China, and law and religion. A recipient of multiple Fulbright Awards, Professor Nagle earned an international reputation as a teacher and author. Despite his relatively brief time at Seton Hall Law, alumni will surely recall his love of nature and his generosity with his time.

Diversity Speaks with Attorney General Gurbir Grewal

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal was featured at the 2018 Diversity Speaks Lecture Series, hosted by Seton Hall Law and Porzio, Bromberg & Newman, P.C. Dean Kathleen M. Boozang introduced Attorney General Grewal as part of the year-long theme of Criminal Justice Reform. His lecture described his Office’s pursuit of justice across a range of social issues, including strengthening community relations with the state’s 35,000 law enforcement officers and a multi-pronged effort to combat the opioid epidemic.

The 2019 Hobbs-Larson Lecture by Chief Justice Stuart Rabner

Chief Justice Stuart Rabner of the New Jersey Supreme Court delivered the keynote address at the annual Hobbs-Larson Lecture. The Chief Justice discussed his efforts to further innovate bail reform initiatives across the state. Named in honor of former Seton Hall Law School Dean Patrick E. Hobbs and funded by Peter N. Larson ’74 and his wife, Lee, the event is dedicated to the spirit of civil discourse and diversity of opinion on matters of national importance.

2019 Commencement Honors Craig Carpenito ’00 and Mary Meehan

May 23, 2019

U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Craig Carpenito ’00 and Seton Hall University’s Interim President, Dr. Mary J. Meehan were honored at the Law School’s 65th Commencement ceremony. Mr. Carpenito delivered the keynote address to students receiving Juris Doctor degrees, Master of Science in Jurisprudence degrees, and Master of Laws degrees at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

As a U.S. Attorney, Mr. Carpenito is responsible for overseeing all federal criminal prosecutions and the litigation of civil matters in N.J. in which the federal government has an interest. He earnestly described the path that led him to his current role, stating, “Always work hard. Always treat people well. And never quit when there is an obstacle in your way.”

Distinguished members of the University’s faculty, alumni, and student body also spoke, including Dean Kathleen M. Boozang; Mary J. Meehan, Lynn Fontaine Newsome ’81 (Chair of the Board of Visitors), Darran St. Ange ’19 (Student Bar Association President); and Omar Debs ’19 (student speaker). In addition, the Class of 1969 celebrated its 50th reunion.

Three Distinguished Alumni Honored at 2019 Alumni Gala

The Law School welcomed 216 new students as part of the Classes of 2022 and 2023 at 2019’s new student Orientation. Highlights included: U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Craig Carpenito ’00 delivering the keynote address; Evelyn Padin ’92, President of the New Jersey State Bar Association administering the Attorney Oath; a Q&A with United States Magistrate Judge for the District of New Jersey, The Honorable Michael A. Hammer ’93; and a well-attended Student Organizations Fair.

Paul B. Matey ’01

Becomes Circuit Court Judge

Paul B. Matey ’01 was sworn in as a Circuit Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in March. Before donning the robe, Judge Matey was a partner at Lowenstein Sandler, where he practiced complex commercial litigation and criminal defense. He has also served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary at University Hospital in Newark, as well as Deputy Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ’87, and Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey. As a federal prosecutor, Judge Matey received the prestigious Director’s Award for Superior Performance from the United States Department of Justice. Formerly, he practiced with Kellogg, Hansen, Todd, Figel & Frederick representing clients in trial and appellate litigation. After graduating from Seton Hall Law, Judge Matey clerked for the Honorable Robert E. Cowen of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the Honorable John C. Lifland of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Judge Matey earned his J.D. summa cum laude and served as Editorin-Chief of the Seton Hall Law Review. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Scranton.

“My years at Seton Hall Law taught me an unwavering respect for the rule of law and instilled a commitment to public service,” says Judge Matey. “The Catholic values of integrity, loyalty, and engagement inspired me as a student, challenged me to do more as an attorney, and ground me in my judicial service. I am honored to be a member of the Seton Hall Law family.”

Judge Matey’s confirmation continues the high-level Presidential nominations and appointments of recent Seton Hall Law alumni: Craig Carpenito ’00 was named as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey and Jay Town ’98 was named as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama.

FACULTY RETIREMENTS

This academic year saw the retirement of two Seton Hall Law legends, Professor Catherine McCauliff and Barbara Mol, Director of the Peter W. Rodino, Jr. Law Library.

Professor Catherine McCauliff

Professor McCauliff joined the Seton Hall Law faculty in 1984. She is a legal historian and a renowned scholar on myriad topics including European Legal History; English Legal History; Theory of Contracts; Agency, Partnerships and LLCs; Comparative Constitutional Law; Jurisprudence; First Amendment; and Shakespeare and the Law.

A prolific scholar, Professor McCauliff has focused her recent work on the confluence of contract theory, religion, literature, and American, English and European legal history as they relate to the evolution of a jurisprudence of natural rights.

Though she will no longer be in the classroom, the school is grateful that Professor McCauliff will continue to teach online in the Law School’s M.S.J. program.

Professor Barbara Mol

Barbara Mol served the Rodino Law Library since 1977, concluding her career as Director. Professor Mol started at the Law School as Acquisitions Librarian in 1977, took a slight detour to industry, and returned in 1984 as Cataloging Librarian.

By 1986, she was Head of Technical Services. A familiar face in the Library, Barbara was a welcome resource to many generations of students.

“We are abundantly thankful for both Professor McCauliff and Mol’s many years of dedicated service to the Law School,” said Dean Kathleen M. Boozang. “We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to them for their commitment to their work, our students, and the faculty.”

O’Toole Scrivo, LLC Endows McLaughlin Trial Advocacy Workshop

An increasing number of firms are becoming known as “Seton Hall firms,” reflecting our alumni’s confidence in the Seton Hall Law education, and commitment to the pledge that “Seton Hall Law hires Seton Hall Law.”

The law firm of O’Toole Scrivo, LLC is a Seton Hall Law firm. Only two years after opening its doors, one of the first significant moves by its founding partners was to endow the Denis F. McLaughlin Advanced Trial Advocacy Workshop at Seton Hall Law with a $500,000 gift. The gift not only honors the legacy of a teacher who indelibly impacted them personally and professionally, but provides the resources to enhance and preserve the trial training for which he is legendary.

Denis McLaughlin serves as the founding director and architect of the Workshop, aided by Professor Jacob T. Elberg. O’Toole and Scrivo have one objective in mind: that the Workshop expose aspiring trial lawyers to the best at their craft. McLaughlin’s vision, which is one of excellence and rigor, aligns. “I am thrilled that because of Kevin and Tom’s generosity, Seton Hall Law students eager to begin their careers as trial lawyers will have this invaluable, ‘hands-on’ learning experience,” says Professor Denis McLaughlin. McLaughlin will select students for participation in the Workshop by application, and demonstration of a clear passion and track record for trial work. The two-credit Workshop will be intensive – students will engage in two weeks of day-long immersion during Intersession between New Year’s and the start of the Spring semester. The students will prepare and practice each part of a trial structured around a set of simulated complex case files, culminating with full-blown trials at the federal or state courthouses before actual judges and juries.

The students will be coached throughout their two weeks by teams of highly skilled judges and trial attorneys who are also tested teachers – many among the faculty have years of NITA experience. The Workshop will provide students with, not only the opportunity for individual growth, but also the chance to become colleagues with the lions of the profession before they have even taken the bar exam.

O’Toole and Scrivo, are the drivers of the Workshop concept and the gift, and the firm clearly sees this as a way to give back. “I would not be the attorney, or person, I am today without Denis McLaughlin’s teaching and guidance,” says Kevin O’Toole ’89. “We want to ensure that, for years to come, Seton Hall Law students are able to similarly learn the practical skills necessary to be effective trial lawyers.”

Thomas P. Scrivo ’89 adds, “Our vision was to create a program that continues this legacy and honors Denis’ years of dedicated service to the Law School and the legal community. Professor McLaughlin has helped shape the legal careers of thousands of students, many of whom have become New Jersey’s finest trial lawyers.”

Dean Boozang shares her amazement that she never even got the chance to ask the firm for a gift – “I wanted to give Tom and Kevin time to get their firm up and going. I assumed that needed a little space after they so generously supported the 2018 Alumni Gala. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Tom and Kevin came to me to talk about endowing a trial program in Denis’ honor, and here we are. As impressive as anything else about this story is that Tom and Kevin want to make sure that the firm’s gift inspires others to give back as well.”

The new program will launch in January of 2020.

DeCotiis Law Moot Courtroom Future Generations

Seton Hall Law held a Dedication Ceremony and Ribbon Cutting for the completed and reimagined moot court space on January 18th. The room, now named the DeCotiis Law Moot Courtroom is on the cutting-edge of innovation and technology housing state-of-the-art upgrades for current and future generations of advocates. The design of the Courtroom’s wide glass entryway emphasizes the importance of law’s transparency. In her remarks, Dean Kathleen M. Boozang noted the proximity of the DeCotiis Law Moot Courtroom and Chapel: together they represent Seton Hall Law’s core mission –producing lawyers who integrate faith and justice.

Seton Hall Law is deeply grateful for the generosity of the DeCotiis Law Firm and family, represented at the ribbon cutting by Joseph ’94 and M. Robert ’69. Professor Michael P. Ambrosio Makes Law School Possible for

Over nearly five decades at Seton Hall Law, Professor Michael P. Ambrosio has inspired the lawyer unique to Seton Hall Law — one who integrates jurisprudence into the everyday practice of law and whose thinking is grounded in a Catholic view of justice.

To ensure that students who desire the Seton Hall Law experience are able to attend, Professor Ambrosio and his wife, Janice Gordon, have committed $2,000,000 to establish an endowed scholarship fund. Their gift will help generations of students for whom a Seton Hall Law degree would otherwise be out of reach.

A Seton Hall Law professor since 1970, Professor Ambrosio specializes in ethics and legal malpractice and is known as the conscience of the legal profession; he integrates jurisprudence into the daily practice of law and espouses a sophisticated natural law approach that is grounded in a Catholic view of justice.

“Seton Hall Law has been growing in importance, both in the state and as a nationally ranked law school,” said Professor Ambrosio, who is embraces the University’s belief of providing education of the mind, heart, and spirit. “I support anything we can do to show that we’re striving for excellence in every way, and scholarship aid to open the path for deserving students is a critical part of that.”

The gift is also a way of giving back since Ambrosio’s undergraduate and law school costs were defrayed by various forms of tuition support. Professor Ambrosio added that recruiting students from across the socioeconomic spectrum will improve not only Seton Hall Law but also the entire legal profession.

“Assisting needy students so they have the opportunity to attend the Law School is in keeping with Michael’s belief in ‘equitable distribution,’” Janice said. “I, too, appreciate the importance of giving students economic assistance, and I admire and fully support Michael’s commitment in this regard.”

Professor Ambrosio’s courses on Professional Responsibility and Law and Morality develop the intellectual basis and philosophical commitment for students to pursue their careers in a manner that both models morality and benefits society.
