ORANGE COUNTY

Welcome

Dear Patrons,

We are so grateful for you, our donors, artists, volunteers and staff who make our commitment to the arts possible.

This November, award-winning jazz singer Caity Gyorgy will kick off the month with bouncy melodies and a memorable musical performance. TV fans will be delighted to see and hear an immersive orchestral rendition of Avatar: The Last Airbender in Concert accompanied by gorgeous live scores. And for young readers, don’t miss out on the playful Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical! the Chamber Music series, we have the Takács Quartet and the Piano Trio. Each presentation gives its audience both classic pieces as well as new compositions that will certainly become classics. And just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, we can’t wait to present the musical Shucked. This corn-filled show will satisfy your appetite for fall flavors and leave you laughing all night long.

Our artistic partners also have exciting performances this month. The Philharmonic Society presents acclaimed Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii. Blind since birth, his breathtaking artistry will astonish the audience. Pacific Symphony opens the Pops season with Dolly Parton Threads: My Songs in Symphony, a multimedia experience and so much more!

As a non-profit arts organization, our education programs and performances would not be made possible without the generous support from individuals like you. This Giving Tuesday, we want to spotlight our Ways to Give page, which can be found on scfta.org.

We thank you again for being a part of our joyous community throughout this lively season!

A triple threat, in the best possible way

“Tony Yazbeck is that rare commodity, a true triple threat: He can act, sing and dance with equal skill and passion,” says Backstage.

Yazbeck makes a welcome return to the Center in a spellbinding one-man show. He invites the audience to join him on an emotional journey of life’s ups and downs told through the lyrics of classic show tunes, new standards and dazzling tap dancing.

Our stage in Samueli Theater is probably not much bigger than the one in New York City’s renowned 54 Below. A reviewer seeing him at a performance there recounted how she was disappointed that she wouldn’t see Yazbeck dance on such a small stage. Oh, ye of little faith! He broke into a shuffle that grew to a full-on tap extravaganza. (Perhaps the stage grows with him.) It’s as if he is incapable of singing a song without some footwork to go along. Audiences love it.

Yazbeck made his Broadway debut at the age of 11 in Gypsy and he hasn’t left the stage since. In that production he was onstage with Tyne Daly, and Broadway directors quickly realized that this kid was something special. He showed himself as a real triple threat 20 years later when he was cast in another revival of Gypsy starring Patti LuPone.

In addition to a Tony® nomination for his starring role in the 2014 revival of On The Town, he’s been in Finding Neverland, Chicago, Irving

continued on page 10

continued from page 8

Berlin’s White Christmas, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Oklahoma!, A Chorus Line, Kiss Me, Kate … the list goes on.

When he was young, Yazbeck started dancing along with Fred Astaire whenever one of his films came on the television, and his parents were wise enough to know what to do: They enrolled him in a dance school when he was 4 years old. Yazbeck told the Denver Post his favorite teachers have been the films of Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, and Ginger Rogers.

“There’s something about them that actually just makes me so happy and takes me away,” says Yazbeck. “I lose all my troubles.”

The reviewers notice it too. “…the wonderful Tony Yazbeck, when he looks inward, to his lovelorn heart, becomes a supremely eloquent dancer, a fusion of Astaire’s elegance and Kelly’s bounce,” says The New York Times. “And he has a yearning voice to match.”

“There is no one else working in cabaret today who concentrates the incorporation of dance into their show the way Tony Yazbeck does,” says reviewer Stephen Mosher. “Yazbeck’s melding of the storytelling through dance, through lyrics, through monology is unique to himself.”

He brings that to his show. In fact, Variety says, “Tony Yazbeck exhibits unforced charm and grace, channeling Fred Astaire.” Theatermania says, “Yazbeck is nothing but class.”

Perhaps you’d better see him now before his career moves in a new direction. He has been taking on the role of director, having begun with Stephen Schwartz’s musical version of Children of Eden two years ago. And he’s planning to direct a production of Jane Eyre at Lincoln Center next year.

But Yazbeck will probably always be drawn to the song and dance of a stage, any stage. Don’t miss seeing him on ours.

Fun Fact: After Gypsy closed, his family moved to the Poconos, where Tony—aged 14— worked on a farm to make extra money.

Art from the heart

When Henry Segerstrom first visualized the Segerstrom Center for the Arts campus, he envisioned an inviting cultural center where all the arts are celebrated and represented. This included not only performance and visual arts, landscape design and installation work. He wanted sculpture to be an integral part of the campus. Several include “Reclining Figure” by Henry Moore, “Fire Bird” by Richard Lippold, and “Connector” by Richard Serra.

In keeping with this legacy, a new sculpture comes to the Center to join these renowned pieces. American artist Karon Davis’s “Curtain Call,” a larger-than-life work, will be displayed in the Center in the Orchestra-level lobby during the 2025–26 season.

“Curtain Call,” a depiction of a ballerina taking her final bow, speaks directly to one of the Center’s core artistic missions: the art of classical ballet. “Curtain Call” is part of an ongoing series, Beauty Must Suffer, which examines the physical and emotional labor behind the pursuit of balletic beauty, particularly among Black dancers working within the Eurocentric tradition of ballet. The work, created using a combination of 3D scanning and traditional sculpting techniques, serves as a tribute to the dancers who inhabit the Center stages.

“Curtain Call” was unveiled on October 2 in tandem with the opening of San Francisco Ballet’s production of Frankenstein in Segerstrom Hall and continues the Center’s mission to be a place for art in all forms.

“Dance is at the heart of the Center’s programming, and this sculpture mirrors both the artistry and the humanity we celebrate on stage,” says Limor Tomer, the Center’s vice president of programming and production. “We are honored to share this sculpture with our Orange County community.”

Presenting world-class dance

companies has always been part of the Center’s mission. Ballet superstar Mikhail Bayishnokov visited the Center in 1986 shortly before it opened and declared it “a paradise.” As artistic director of American Ballet Theatre he promised to return that December with its production of The Nutcracker, which he did, starting a long partnership that continues to this day.

The Center remains the West Coast home to American Ballet Theatre, which continues to present the annual season favorite The Nutcracker, as well as a spring production. We are also home to the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School, training new generations of dancers. It is the only other American Ballet Theatre school outside New York City.

“I am honored and thrilled to have this piece on display at the Center,” says Davis. “The Center’s dance tradition has always been unparalleled, and ‘Curtain Call’ reminds us of the reward of a great performance before the dancer heads back to the rehearsal room the next day to continue to practice.”

The Nutcracker celebrates 10 years at the Center

Was it really 10 years ago that The Nutcracker arrived at John Wayne Airport from New York City to spend a few years at Segerstrom Center for the Arts? He was delighted to be missing the New York City winter blizzards and jumped right into the Orange County lifestyle. He went to the beach (in January!) and learned to surf, became an obsessed fan of In-n-Out burgers, and is now besties with the Ducks hockey team mascot. (They bonded over the problems of having giant heads on their shoulders.) He is most proud of having his own Center employee badge—all access! And, of course, he has a star dressing room during the run of the ballet. Take that, mice.

The famed American Ballet Theatre production of The Nutcracker will return next month for 14 performances with Tchaikovsky’s score performed by Pacific Symphony. Choreographed by the renowned Alexei Ratmansky, this Nutcracker production sparkles with fresh inventiveness. From the bees who buzz around the flowers as they dance and the mischievous young mouse who causes no end of trouble, to the enchantingly beautiful pas des deux of the Prince and the Princess, this production has delighted generations of fans.

This year, 50 children from the ABT Gillespie School will be dancing in the production. Eight will be taking a lead role. Many of them have been other lead characters in previous productions. One of the boys dancing the role of Fritz came to the school through the Boys Dance Too program and joined the school this year. The two Claras (they dance in alternate performances) have both previously danced the role of the Little Mouse. One Little Mouse this year is, in real life, the sister of one of the students dancing Clara. The students love this opportunity to be on stage dancing with members of American Ballet Theatre.

Make it a holiday tradition: The Nutcracker himself has enjoyed performing for his adoring audiences and plans to stay in the sun for a few more years.

Jessica Vosk will “sleigh” Center audiences

Jessica Vosk has made herself a firm favorite of Center cabaret audiences. Now returning for the fourth time and as part of the Headliners Series, Vosk will have attendees eating sugar plums out of her hand as she brings her first full-length holiday album to Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall for one night only.

Vosk is redefining holiday magic with Sleigh, bringing her signature wit, sincerity, and sparkle to create a special spin on holiday classics and brand-new carols.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to make a holiday album,” she says. “The songs on this album are all my versions of both pop and traditional songs listeners should know so well.”

Vosk has also released a single, “Santa Tell Me,” a cover of Ariana Grande’s Christmas hit. The two are a mutual admiration society. Grande says of Vosk, “After being a fan of hers for so long, I’m humbled and honored that she is covering my song (I’m actually screaming).” They bonded, of course, over their roles in the Broadway hit Wicked. While Vosk, as Elphaba, toured with the show for two years and then landed on Boadway, they were both part of an NBC television special to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the show. Grande, of course, is also a star in the Wicked films.

Growing up, Vosk performed in community theater and enjoyed it, but in college she decided to play it safe and studied investor relations. She started working on Wall Street and quickly got a promotion, then another one. Her bosses loved her energy, but after a few years

she began to have panic attacks and realized finance was the wrong career for her. She had to try Broadway. Vosk quit and her panic attacks stopped.

Vosk had no safety net when she began the treadmill of auditioning. Without an agent, it was a slow climb. There were some tiny parts and ensemble roles. Soon she had understudy roles in Bridges of Madison County, Finding Neverland, and Fiddler on the Roof. Then she was cast in a national tour of Wicked and eventually moved into the role of Elphaba. When she returned to New York she reprised her role in the Broadway production of Wicked, including during the production’s 15th anniversary.

Most recently, she starred in Hell’s Kitchen, Alicia Keys’ Tony® Award-winning musical. Expanding beyond Broadway, her sell-out solo concerts at Carnegie Hall have been huge successes.

Reviewers are enthralled.

“Husky, sexy, rich mezzo … the epitome of

what American musical theater is all about,” says British Theatre, while Playbill raves “Her powerhouse and pristine vocals aside, the true achievement here is Vosk’s ability to switch musical genres effortlessly, engaging each song with a new vocal attack that is completely truthful to the musical style.”

Of Vosk’s previous appearance at the Center, BroadwayWorld.com writes, “A wow-inducing show filled with whip smart, laugh-out-loud humor, fun personal stories, and some of the most stunning vocal riffs I’ve heard sung live. She has deservedly become one of the stage’s favorite musical theater divas.”

That should be enough to convince you that you want to buy tickets for this Center performance. Renew your holiday spirit with this special evening.

A Brief History

The Moulin Rouge club you will see in the theatre tonight is a work of theatrical imagination in the spirit of the Moulin Rouge of Paris. Here’s a brief history of that emblematic venue.

• October 6, 1889: The Moulin Rouge opens at the foot of the Montmartre hill. The aim of its founders, Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, is to allow the very rich to come and slum it in a fashionable district, where people live differently from other parts of Paris. The place attracts men and women, the middle classes and rich foreigners passing through Paris, as well as artists and ordinary folk. The French cancan, a new dance inspired by the quadrille, enchanted the spectators. Nicknamed “The First Palace of Women” by Oller and Zidler, the cabaret quickly becomes a great success.

• The first revue, Circassiens et Circassiennes, is launched in April 1890. Toulouse-Lautrec creates the posters for the Moulin Rouge from 1891, the first being La Goulue

• July 29, 1907: First appearance of Mistinguett at the Moulin Rouge in the Revue de la Femme

• After the First World War, Francis Salabert takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. The venue experiences a new popularity thanks to Jacques-Charles and Mistinguett. As the artistic director of the Moulin Rouge, Mistinguett sets a new standard for spectacular revue shows that will inspire Las Vegas venues for nearly a century. American revues, including the Hoffmann Girls, are put on for the first time in Paris.

• In the 1930s, the ballroom is transformed into the most ultra-modern nightclub of the time.

The Moulin Rouge welcomes the Cotton Club in 1937.

• June 22, 1951: Georges France, called Jo France, acquires the Moulin Rouge and starts major renovation work. The birthplace of the French cancan now hosts major international artists.

• 1955: Jo France transfers the Moulin Rouge to the brothers Joseph and Louis Clérico. The famous French cancan is still performed, soon choreographed by Ruggero Angeletti and danced by the Doriss Girls.

• 1962: Jacki Clérico, son of Joseph Clérico, takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. It is the start of a new era: enlargement of the auditorium, installation of a giant aquarium and the first aquatic ballet. Frou Frou of 1963 and its ensuing success marked the beginning of the series of shows beginning with an “F,” their lucky letter, including ten shows up to the latest revue.

• In 2019, the Moulin Rouge and its 60 artists celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Féerie revue show: two hours of amazement featuring cabaret and music hall styles, dance scenes and surprise acts, without forgetting the Moulin Rouge’s most emblematic dance, the French cancan.

• October 2024: The Moulin Rouge, famous around the world, celebrates its 135th anniversary.

The authentic Moulin Rouge of Paris invites you to enter its dazzling and spectacular world. Visit us at the home and birthplace of the Parisian way of celebrating since 1889!

Shucked

The Wiz

This groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz changed the face of Broadway—from its iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock, and ‘70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world. With direction by Schele Williams (The Notebook, revival of Disney’s Aida), choreography by JaQuel Knight (Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” Black Is King) and additional material by Tony®- and Emmy-nominated writer and TV host Amber Ruffin (The Amber Ruffin Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers), this dynamite infusion of ballet, jazz, and modern pop brings a whole new groove to easing on down the road. Everybody rejoice!

The Notebook

Based on the best-selling novel that inspired the iconic film, The Notebook tells the story of Allie and Noah, both from different worlds, who share a lifetime of love despite the forces that threaten to pull them apart. “Full of butterfly-inducing highs and beautiful songs” (Entertainment Weekly), The Notebook is a deeply moving portrait of the enduring power of love. The show is directed by Michael Greif (Dear Evan Hansen, Next to Normal, RENT) and Schele Williams (The Wiz, Aida), and features music and lyrics by multi-platinum singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, book by Bekah Brunstetter (NBC’s This Is Us), and choreography by Katie Spelman.

Monty Python’s Spamalot

Spamalot, which first galloped onto Broadway in 2005, features a book and lyrics by Eric Idle and music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle. The original Broadway production was nominated for fourteen Tony® Awards and won three, including Best Musical. The musical comedy lovingly ripped off from the film classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail has everything that makes a great knight at the theatre, from flying cows to killer rabbits, British royalty to French taunters, dancing girls, rubbery shrubbery, and of course, the Lady of the Lake. Spamalot features wellknown song titles such as “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” “The Song That Goes Like This,” “Find Your Grail,” and more that have become beloved classics in the musical theatre canon.

The ensemble presents traditional mariachi music along with beloved carols such as “Feliz Navidad” and “Noche de Paz” in a lively performance, taking the audience on a holiday journey through Mexico, including La Posada, the reenactment of Joseph and Mary’s pilgrimage to Bethlehem.

Mariachi Los Camperos, one of the most popular mariachi ensembles in the world, is noted for innovative shows and as a concert ensemble. It has won two Grammy Awards and played a fundamental role in the development of mariachi music in the United States. The band was founded right here in Southern California and for more than 60 years has performed in prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Center!

The band’s powerful vocals, vibrant arrangements, and interactive sing-alongs make this an exciting experience for all ages as we share the rich cultural heritage of a Mexican Christmas. Don’t miss this unforgettable night of community, tradition, and holiday cheer!

December 23

Last year, you amplified the Center with your Giving Tuesday donation. Thank you!

On the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, millions of Americans open their hearts and donate to their favorite non-profit organizations in support of Giving Tuesday.

This year, on December 2, your donation to Segerstrom Center for the Arts will help us build a stronger safety net for Orange County’s underresourced youth through The Cassin Promise. Created two years ago by the Center with Denise and Kevin Cassin’s philanthropic support, The Cassin Promise provides teens and young adults joyful, creative experiences. It encourages under-resourced youth to grow into confident, resilient individuals by learning life skills and confidence with a sense of community and belonging.

This year, the Cassin family promises to match your Giving Tuesday donation, dollarfor-dollar, up to $75,000. Your gift becomes

$150,000—a game-changer that not only meets critical needs, it helps some of Orange County’s most vulnerable youth remember how to dream!

“Kevin and I feel strongly that all children benefit from participating in the arts,” says Denise Cassin. “The arts take us to a place where anything is possible and give us the tools to get there.”

The Cassin Promise extends deep into our community. Going beyond schools, we now reach youth and young adults in 20 different sites, including group homes and non-profit organizations throughout the county such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Orange County, Casa Youth Shelter, Orange County Rescue Mission, Orangewood Children and Family Center, Orangewood Foundation, South Coast Community Services, Waymakers, and Orange County Department of Education’s ACCESS Division (Alternative, Community and Correctional Education Schools and Services).

artists who lead classes in dance, singing, storytelling, theater, and improvisation. Through these offerings, youth and young adults can learn important lessons in confidence, selfexpression, communication, and collaborative skills that will give them tools to take on their future successfully. These high-impact arts programs are offered at no cost to the organizations.

Meet Angel: After experiencing extreme challenges in school, Angel joined ACCESS when he was 17 with zero high school credit. The Cassin Promise dance classes helped rescue Angel from his shy, withdrawn shell. Angel soon started connecting with peers and his shy smile became enthusiastic grins.

The Cassin Promise experience ultimately led him to complete a course with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. He is on the path to become a Correctional Service Assistant. He graduated last spring from ACCESS with his high school diploma.

“We hope others will be inspired to assist these life-changing programs,” says Denise. “It’s what community is all about.”

Last year we helped 1,700 youth. With your help this year we hope to help 2,000 more. We’re counting on you to help us keep our promise to thousands of Orange County’s youth with your Giving Tuesday donation on December 2.

See a Broadway show, help your community

We know that attending a Broadway musical at the Center can leave you feeling happy and maybe even humming a tune as you return home. For three seasons we have been giving patrons even more reasons to feel happy when they attend a Broadway show.

Three years ago the Center created the Feel Good, Do Good program for Broadway shows by asking patrons to bring items to donate to local charities. You may have spotted the donation bins by the stairs on the plaza and orchestra level lobbies of Segerstrom Hall. It began when we collaborated with Grandma’s House of Hope, which coincided with the performance run of

Hadestown. We accepted the challenge to completely restock their shelves with canned food to be distributed to Orange County’s homeless and underserved community. The organization was overwhelmed by the generous outpouring of donations. Center staff got involved when many volunteered to help pack bags with food ready to hand out to grateful recipients.

We have now teamed with more than 20 local organizations—some with big names and others centered in smaller community groups. For each donation drive we talk to organizations about their needs from one of our four categories of requests: canned food; toys and books; hygiene supplies; and school supplies. It doesn’t take much, maybe just a bottle of shampoo or blank school notebook.

Children’s Hospital of Orange County was a recent recipient when donations filled a van with toys and more than 1,000 books for young patients.

During the blockbuster Hamilton we teamed with Costa Mesa-based Share Ourselves for a school supplies drive to support students in need. We collected new backpacks, notebooks, pens, markers, glue, and crayons for the start of the school year. While this organization primarily focuses on healthcare

Alexander Shelley New Artistic & Music Director Designate

for those in need, they include social services under that umbrella. Giving children backpacks loaded with supplies allowed students to feel included and prepared when they arrived at their campus. For Share Ourselves, this is one more part of their aim to consider what it means to be healthy, inside and out.

Our recent production of & Juliet asked for hygiene supplies for Robyne’s Nest, a Huntington Beach-based organization which provides at-risk and homeless students with the resources necessary to complete high school and pursue a path to self-sufficiency. These teens have small personal budgets, and donations of shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, ChapStick, hand soap, and hand sanitizer by Center patrons make a difference. In fact, we had so many donations during the two-week run of the show that Robyne’s Nest staff collected the first week’s items before the second week of the show began.

Other organizations we’ve worked with include Ronald McDonald House, United Way,

Orange County Animal Care, Someone Cares Soup Kitchen and Miracles of Kids.

“Our fourth annual 2025–26 Broadway season collection drive exemplifies our commitment to supporting local nonprofits while harnessing the unifying power of live theater,” says Center President Casey Reitz. “It’s this spirit of collective impact that defines who we are as both an arts organization and a community partner.”

The Center is proud to have such generous patrons. To be able to help those in our community who are in need is a good feeling not only for donors but also for recipients, who are heartened by the generosity of the county they live in.

We have 136 Broadway performances this season—that’s potentially 408,000 patrons and adds up to a lot of help for people in need. If you have tickets one or more performances, please check its page on our website two weeks before opening night to see who and how you can help.

Thank you for your generosity!
