INTEGRATED DESIGN & MEDIA
MASTER’S & DOCTORAL PROGRAMS

GRADUATE PROGRAMS
Our graduate programs in Integrated Design & Media combine high-end media production with new tools, techniques, and experimental practices. Working at the intersection of technology, culture, and society, you will explore a spectrum of digital media practices including physical computing, game development, interaction design, user experience research, human-computer interfaces, AR/VR/MR, motion capture, bio-design, media installation, experiential design, and performing arts.
MS IN INTEGRATED DESIGN & MEDIA
The Master of Science in Integrated Design & Media program combines high-end media production with new tools, techniques, and experimental practices.
LEARN TO INNOVATE
The Integrated Design & Media (IDM) program may be taken either full time or part time. Required courses include Ideation and Prototyping, Creative Coding, Research Methods, and Media Law. Four required electives can be taken within Integrated Design & Media or other programs at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering; up to three may be taken throughout the University. The program culminates in a self-directed project that combines theory and practice drawing on your creative and technical skills.
The curriculum combines project-based learning with the study of historical, social, and philosophical aspects of digital media. This interdisciplinarity liberates experimentation into the unknown, where you have the technical means to intervene in the systems and communities that matter to you.
Guest speakers and workshops supplement our curriculum and maximize your personal contact with leaders in various sectors of the field, including business, advocacy, service, entertainment, education, and the arts.
PHD IN HUMAN-CENTERED TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION & DESIGN
Develop new applications for existing and emerging technologies informed through rigorous, interdisciplinary research and managing socio-technical transitions. You’ll collaborate with faculty members in a diverse range of fields: digital media and creative technologies, design and human-computer interaction, science and technology studies, urban and environmental studies, and technology management and innovation. This unique PhD program is ideal for students interested in pursuing research-based careers at academic institutions, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, corporate research centers, and research-based design and consulting firms.

¢ The Ability Lab supports research in client-centered, assistive technology and adaptive design for people with disabilities.
¢ The Design Lab is IDM’s in-house space for working with electronics, 3D printing, desktop CNC, and other rapid prototyping technologies. By supporting courses and research in wearable computing, e-textiles, interactive environments, and experiential installations, the Lab is a hub for creativity.
¢ The 370 Jay Street facility is a multidisciplinary center for new media, art, technology, and urban studies, where engineers and artists from Tandon, Tisch, and Steinhardt collaborate at the intersection of technology and emerging media.
¢ NYU Tandon @ The Yard is an emerging media production facility within the Brooklyn Navy Yard that creates opportunities to leverage NYU Tandon’s expertise with industry and media partners around the country, advancing integrative research in areas such as AR/VR/XR and virtual production.
IDM FACILITIES
Faculty and students are anchored in NYU’s emerging media building at 370 Jay Street on our Downtown Brooklyn campus. Schools from across the University, including Tisch School of the Arts and Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, share the building with IDM and other programs from Tandon. Occupying the third floor of this remarkable new facility, IDM houses a number of specialty labs and studios for students, including an experimental print lab, low-power lab, shared public studios for students, spaces for fabrication and installation, and the Ability Project. These are complemented by our on-campus motion capture studio and sound studio, as well as other media facilities in the downtown Brooklyn area.
