Shared Jesuit Values, Bold Strategic Vision

In a visionary step forward, Spring Hill College and Rockhurst University— Catholic, Jesuit institutions in the United States— have announced a strategic academic alliance that blends legacy with innovation. This milestone marks a significant moment not only for current and future students, but for those who understand the lasting value of a Jesuit education rooted in purpose and service.

Rockhurst University, based in Kansas City, Missouri, is a fellow Jesuit institution committed to academic excellence, leadership and service. With their already strong programs in the health sciences, business and liberal arts, Rockhurst University is uniquely outfitted for an alliance that will be mutually beneficial and align with Spring Hill College’s academic mission and core values.

Spring Hill College already has plans to expand its programs in the 2025-26 academic year by adding forward-looking majors in data analytics and intelligence, exercise science, social influencing and criminal justice— programs designed to align with modern student interests and the evolving job landscape. The alliance with Rockhurst University builds on this initiative by opening doors to a range of new academic and experiential opportunities.

Spring Hill College students majoring in health sciences will benefit from seamless academic pathways into Rockhurst’s highly respected graduate programs, including a master’s in Speech Language Pathology and doctorates in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. These pathways provide a clear, accelerated route to meaningful careers in service-oriented professions.

“Rockhurst University is proud to join with Spring Hill College in a strategic academic alliance rooted in our shared Jesuit mission to empower students and drive innovation in higher education,”

said Sue Willcox, Ph.D., Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Rockhurst University.“Together, we are creating new academic pathways and collaborative programs that expand opportunities, strengthen our communities and prepare students for the global challenges of tomorrow.”

The alliance will also support learning that extends well beyond the classroom. Students at both institutions will be able to study on the other’s campus, take online courses offered through the partner school and participate in immersive, curated academic experiences in the distinctive regions.

Spring Hill’s Gulf Coast setting offers proximity to resources like the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, while Rockhurst’s urban location opens doors to internships and career opportunities in logistics, health care and business innovation. These exchanges offer students hands-on, real-world exposure to complement their academic studies, reinforcing the Jesuit focus on reflection, experience and discernment.

“I’m very excited about our strategic alliance with Rockhurst University, which combines many of our academic resources, and doubles our acumen and ideation to the benefit of our students on both campuses,” said Rebecca Cantor, Ph.D., Provost of Spring Hill College, “We’re currently working on ways that students will be able to

take classes online from the other institution and even study at the other campus for curated experiential learning opportunities or study abroad with cohorts made up of students from both campuses. We are excited to keep pushing the boundaries of this alliance to see how much we can create together for our students and our shared mission.

The alliance also opens new international pathways. Rockhurst students will gain expanded access to Spring Hill’s Italy Center in Bologna, where they can study abroad in one of Europe’s more intellectually rich and culturally immersive university cities. The Italy Center’s programs provide an opportunity for deep academic reflection and global engagements— core elements of a Jesuit education.

While individual programs and experiential opportunities within the alliance remain subject to final approval and formal academic agreements, the overarching vision is already taking shape: an expansive, mission-driven initiative that strengthens both institutions and positions their students for success in a global, interconnected world. ◊

Spring Hill College & Rockhurst University Leadership Exchange

Empowering Alumni, Enriching the Future: Emily Aucoin ‘12

Emily Stewart Aucoin ‘12 embodies the steady presence of someone grounded in values, driven by purpose, and shaped by the place she called home: Spring Hill College. Now serving as the President of the National Alumni Association Board (NAAB), Emily sees this new chapter not as a position of prestige, but as a mean-

ingful opportunity to give back to the community that shaped her. “Serving as the new NAAB President is such an honor,” she says. “It offers a meaningful opportunity to serve as a bridge between our alumni community and the College.”

As NAAB President, Emily is focused on building

stronger alumni connections, supporting fundraising efforts, and helping to usher in the next generation of Badgers. “We are working to bring new energy to alumni events around the country by teaming up with small groups of passionate alumni volunteers,” she explains. “We are also excited about partnering more closely with the admissions team to help welcome the next generation of Spring Hill students.” Her leadership is defined by action and collaboration, always returning to the roots of community that she has been cultivating long before this role.

That sense of purpose didn’t begin after graduation; it was forged on The Hill.

“I find it difficult to fully articulate the profound impact Spring Hill has had on my journey,” Emily reflects. “The Jesuit values instilled in me as a student took root deeply and have continued to guide my personal and professional path.”

After graduating, she carried these values to her service with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Seattle, living in an intentional community, embracing simplicity, and working at a nonprofit focused on “just employment”, equitable development, environmental justice, and policy reform. That experience cemented her commitment to social justice and sparked a fire that would eventually lead her to the law.

She traveled to Louisiana and took a job in alumni relations at a local Jesuit institution, Loyola University New Orleans. There, a deeper calling emerged— the desire to create systematic change from within. While working full-time, Emily enrolled in Loyola’s College of Law’s evening program and earned her Juris Doctor and a Certificate in Social Justice in 2020. Her legal path has been anything but conventional; during the COVID-19 pandemic, she stepped into one of the most vital and vulnerable roles—representing children in the foster care system. “As a child’s attorney, I advocated for the rights of my clients— ensuring their voices were heard in a system where they often have little agency

or control,” she says. In 2023, she pivoted to preventative legal advocacy, working to support families before crises occur. Today, she continues that work through Loyola’s Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic & Center for Social Justice, helping families navigate legal issues that might otherwise push them into the child welfare system. Though her professional life is rooted in advocacy, Emily’s heart is also full of the personal connections Spring Hill gave her— including the one that changed her life forever. “I’m deeply grateful to SHC Athletics for introducing me to my husband, Patrick Aucoin ‘09,” she smiles. “We met through the cross-country team, and today we have two wonderful children, Virginia and Stanley. It’s a joy to return to campus as a family and share with them the place that means so much to us.”

Among her most formative Spring Hill experiences was a senior-year immersion trip to El Salvador over Mardi Gras break. “Our small group explored the country’s rich culture and complex history through the voices and lived experiences of the poor and marginalized,” she recalls.

“The trip sparked deep, meaningful conversations and fostered a strong sense of connection and solidarity that I carry with me to this day.” It’s a memory that mirrors the life she now leads: informed by reflection, rooted in justice, and committed to community.

As NAAB President, Emily hopes to inspire more alumni to reconnect with the College and each other.

“Spring Hill will continue to evolve, but its Jesuit values remain,”

she says. “As alumni, it’s important that we support the College so future generations can be shaped by that same mission— empowered to lead meaningful lives with and for others.” She encourages current students and recent graduates to tap into the strength of the Badger network.

“Spring Hill consistently produces exceptional alumni— many of whom go on to become leaders in their fields. By connecting with the alumni association, students gain imme-

diate access to a supportive network of professionals who are eager to help.”

What excites Emily most as she begins her role as President of the NAAB is not only what Spring Hill has been, but what the College can become. “In a world that often rewards speed and efficiency, and is overwhelmed by noise and division, we need graduates who can think deeply, question boldly, and act with integrity,” she says. She sees immense potential in the alumni community— not just as supporters of the College, but as mentors, collaborators, and champions for one another. In Emily Aucoin, Spring Hill’s mission continues— alive in advocacy, enriched by community, and driven by a deep call to serve. ◊

Introducing the Spring Hill Alumni Recruitment Partners

Spring Hill College is proud to announce the relaunch of the Spring Hill Alumni Recruitment Partners (SHARP), a revitalized initiative that builds on a long-standing effort to engage alumni more actively in the student recruitment process. Originally started by trustee Payton Bueche and her team during her time in the Office of Admissions, SHARP aims to harness the passion and pride of our alumni community to help shape the future of The Hill.

Through SHARP, dedicated alumni are trained to represent Spring Hill College in their local communities, speaking authentically and meaningfully with prospective students about the College’s mission, academic programs, and transformative student experience. SHARP ambassadors

will extend the reach of Spring Hill’s admissions efforts far beyond campus by participating in college fairs, hosting informal gatherings, and building purposeful connections with prospective students.

This is a unique opportunity for alumni who are passionate about their alma mater and eager to make a lasting impact on The Hill. If you’ve ever found yourself sharing your Spring Hill story with pride or wishing you could do more to support the next generation of Badgers, then this is your opportunity. To Support the Whole Person, You Have to Know the Whole Person:

A Conversation with Fr. Lewis

When Father Mark Lewis, S.J., steps onto the campus of Spring Hill College, the historic buildings and centuries-old oaks do more than stir up memories— they affirm a lifelong connection.

A 1980 graduate with degrees in history and philosophy, Fr. Lewis now serves as rector of the prestigious Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Even across oceans, through Vatican halls, and into leadership at one of the Church’s most storied institutions, The Hill remains home. As he returns to deliver an inspiring keynote commencement address to the Class of 2025, Fr. Lewis reflects on his cherished memories of Spring Hill College.

“It’s always great to come back,” he says, smiling. “There are so many memories here. I’ve been out these last few nights with former students and classmates. The stories always come back.”

Among his most meaningful memories is one deeply rooted in vocation: his ordination at St. Joseph Chapel. “That chapel is a key place for me. I went through a lot there— assisting at Masses, doing jobs as a student. I was ordained there, and I remember the reception photos. The last photo? Everyone still there was a Spring Hill alum. We closed the party.”

The sense of belonging and interwoven community reminds him of another cherished moment at Spring Hill College. “Another great story when I was here— I got to do the wedding of two students I had taught, who were the children of two of my classmates.” Fr. Lewis recalls. “We had the reception here in Byrne. They had all their friends who were graduates, so it was a reunion for them, for all of my class and for the faculty that taught both generations.”

He describes the scene like something out of a film: a band led by a classmate-turned music promoter, the bride’s father— also an alum— grabbing the guitar to play a set, laughter and music spilling into the night. “It was one of those perfect screen film moments,” he says.

“You couldn’t duplicate it anywhere in the world.”

It was more than just a reunion; it was a testament to how Spring Hill College brings people together through shared history, faith, and joy.

Now living in Rome and guiding a university that trains clergy and scholars from around the world, Fr. Lewis balances big-picture vision with the grounding influence of student life. As rector, he serves a role similar to a university president; his responsibilities include overseeing the institution’s mission, managing operations, and collaborating closely with the Vatican.

“I don’t have a board of trustees like a typical U.S. college,” he explains. “I am appointed by the Vatican. They approve all our statutes and rules, and we report to them. I meet with them fairly regularly. They also play a big role in the international world— initiatives for peace that aren’t really known about unless they are successful.”

The Catholic world also recently witnessed the historic election of a new pope. “I think Pope Leo XIV will operate in continuity with what Pope Francis introduced,” Fr. Lewis says. “Though he may have a quieter style, he also comes out of Latin America. A lot of people are excited that he’s

from Chicago, but he spent most of his pastoral life in Peru. He’s got an awful lot of that influence, which he also brings to the Papacy, as did Francis. So there will be a lot of continuity in terms of synodality, outreach to the poor, and to those who are at the margins.”

Though with the celebration of a new leader, Catholics around the world mourn the loss of Pope Francis and reflect on his legacy. As a fellow Jesuit, Fr. Lewis sees Pope Francis’s background as the key to his papacy. “He was very keen on knowing people, that sort of cura personalis piece that Spring Hill also emulates as a Jesuit institution. He also brought the Society of Jesus’ commitment to being with the poor and working for justice into his role as Pope, and his life.”

For Fr. Lewis, the values of social justice and faith that shaped his formation at Spring Hill remain central to his own identity and mission. “It all goes back to Vatican II,” he says. “If you want peace, you have to have justice. If we are going to do justice in the Church, we must have faith. And our faith has to be expressed in acting justly.”

“A lot of people note that justice is the first thing, but faith and a desire for peace are key elements for doing that. All of those aspects require a love for your neighbor and your community, for building up that community.” Fr. Lewis says, “The values don’t stand alone— they are interwoven together.”

When asked about the phrase Cura Personalis— the care for the whole person— which sits at the heart of Jesuit tradition and Spring Hill teachings, Fr. Lewis doesn’t hesitate: “It means listening. It means helping people to do the best that they can and finding out what they think they are called to do. To support the whole person, you have to know the whole person.”

Fr. Lewis connects cura personalis to his time before becoming a rector, when he was a teacher.

“In academics, the goal is not necessarily to get the highest grade, but to learn. When you have students from 127 countries, with different backgrounds, you can’t expect them to be uniform.”

He elaborates, “You have to adapt to where they are at that moment and where you can bring them over the course of their studies. That’s a key element of knowing the students— knowing your teaching. It’s about being part of a community.”

That, he believes, is what makes Spring Hill College special— not just in his life, but in the life of every Badger. “That is the greatest charism of Spring Hill: when you come to Spring Hill, you enter a community. Some moments are rough, we like to call them shipwrecks, but it’s a process where you grow into a community. By the time you leave, you have friends for life and a community that is intimately tied to this place even decades later.”

As Fr. Lewis reflects on a life of global leadership and local roots, the thread that ties it all together is the formative power of community built through lived experience, deep relationships, and a commitment to justice. His experiences as a student, teacher, and leader are a testament to the enduring impact of a place that shapes and supports the whole person. “Spring Hill College is a key place for learning what the community needs, growing that community, and living it,” he concludes.

“That’s the gift they take to the rest of the Church— to the rest of the world.” ◊

“It’s always great to come back,” he says, smiling.
“There are so many memories here. I’ve been out these last few nights with former students and classmates. The stories always come back.”

Generosity for the Future: The Class of 1974

The Class of 1974 celebrated their 50th reunion with a generous and heartfelt gift to Spring Hill College. Through the generosity of many classmates, the Golden Badgers have named the Open Study Commons in the new Annette N. Shelby Health and Science Innovation Center as a way to commemorate their time on the Hill and mark this special milestone. Announced during the Golden Badger Dinner at last year’s Homecoming on the Hill, this was a highlight of the reunion weekend.

More than 40 members of the Class of 1974 returned to The Hill, enjoying a weekend filled with nostalgia, connection, and a celebration of lives well-lived. They honored classmates who have passed, shared stories from their time on campus, and looked toward the future of Spring Hill College.

“This meaningful gift is a way for our class to express gratitude to Spring Hill College and its dedicated faculty for the many blessings we received, while also supporting future generations of students as they embark on their own Spring Hill journeys,” says Brian Cooney ’74, a member of the Reunion and Gift Committee.

In particular, the contribution honors the late Dr. John P. Macnamara—affectionately known as Dr. Mac—whose lasting influence, along with that of many other dedicated faculty members, helped shape the lives of countless students.

A plaque commemorating Dr. Mac and his colleagues will be placed in the Open Study Commons, ensuring their legacy continues to inspire future generations.

During the dinner, classmates Dr. David McDuff and Mary Linda Portner spoke movingly about the impact of Dr. Mac and other mentors, reminding everyone that each student had at least one “Dr. Mac” who made a meaningful difference. They highlighted how these mentors shaped their paths.

The Class of 1974 hopes this gift leaves a lasting mark on campus and inspires fellow alumni to support the College’s mission and its students. ◊

A special thanks to the Reunion and Gift Committee: Leo Calagaz, Grace Gretchen, John Lavelle, Mary Linda Portner, David McDuff, M.D., and Brian Cooney.

Soirée sur L’Avenue:

Honoring Our History, Celebrating Our Future

It was a night nearly two centuries in the making. On April 30, 2025, Spring Hill College’s Avenue of the Oaks was transformed into a glowing canopy of lights and laughter, as alumni, neighbors, and friends gathered to celebrate the inaugural Soirée sur L’Avenue and share in a night of community and tradition.

The event, honoring Spring Hill’s 195-year legacy and French roots, invited guests to experience an elegant night of community, culture, and connection. The Soirée’s elegance was unmistakable, with a fragrant array of French cuisine, stunning floral arrangements, and lively jazz music setting the tone for an evening celebrating the College’s past while looking toward its future.

“Spring Hill College has shown perseverance and adaptability during its long legacy, and it has dealt with

many challenges,” said Dr. Mary Van Brunt, President of Spring Hill College. “It is the courage and ability to evolve in an ever-changing higher education landscape that makes Spring Hill College truly remarkable, especially as we enter our next exciting chapter.”

Set beneath the same oaks where generations of students have processed on Commencement day, the Soirée served as a bridge between those who founded the College and those continuing to shape it. Guests participated in a silent auction that showcased beautiful artwork from featured artist Stephanie Morris ‘69 and her talented friends, many of whom also shared her strong connections to Spring Hill College. By the end of the night, over $50,000 was raised for the Presidential Leadership Fund, which supports the strategic plan and mission of Spring Hill College

“We are building upon our Jesuit tradition of excellence while boldly planning for the ever-changing future,” Van Brunt added, addressing the crowd. “Your generosity is a testament to your belief in the mission of Spring Hill College, and we are deeply grateful for your support.”

It was more than just a party and fundraiser— for many, it was a homecoming.

To Tom Byrne ‘82, a member of the Board of Trustees and the Presidential Fleur de Lis Society, Spring Hill’s legacy runs generations deep. “Spring Hill College is family— and to my family, it is home,” Byrne shared. “When I arrived here in 1979, I was a bit aimless, but here I found my calling and my career, and so much more. The glory of God is truly the human fully alive, and His glory is in a thriving Spring Hill College.”

This sentiment continues to ring true for current students, as well. “This place is more than a campus, it is a home, a

community, and a classroom far beyond the walls of our buildings,” said Steven Lyles, SGA senior class president.

“Spring Hill is the cornerstone of this neighborhood,” said Kendall Hurley, Annual Campaigns and Events Officer. “Everyone walks on campus and takes photographs here— even on a Monday morning, there are people on the porch of Stewartfield taking pictures and enjoying what we have to offer.”

That sense of neighborhood pride was echoed by long-time Mobile resident Bill Barrick. “The legacy of the Jesuits is so wonderful, and this event opens up campus for all.”

There was a moment of pause late into the evening, when the pleasant air gave way to a light mist that drifted through the branches of the oaks. Far from dampening the atmosphere, the soft rain added a quiet charm to the night.

Guests simply huddled closer together and raised jackets above their heads, laughing and enjoying themselves. As community member Barbara Bodie said, “This has been one of the most interesting evenings I’ve been to in a long time. As you can see, people are not going home! Even though it’s sprinkling, they’re still here enjoying themselves.” She smiled, “This is a party that brought people together.”

And perhaps, more importantly, she captured the event’s deeper meaning: “This event opens up the College. It’s not just one group or another— everyone is enjoying themselves together. Spring Hill College does not thrive in isolation.”

Building on the momentum of this year’s gathering, Soirée sur L’Avenue will return on April 29, 2026, promising another unforgettable evening beneath the oaks. The vision for the event is already evolving, as organizers aim for greater reach and impact.

“Tonight has been an incredible success, and we’re thrilled with what we’ve accomplished with the help of our amazing Soirée Committee,” said Kendall Hurley, beaming at the delighted guests. “This is just the beginning—our growth starts here, and the sky is truly the limit!”

Those interested in information on supporting next year’s event are encouraged to reach out to Kendall Hurley at khurley@shc.edu for more information. ◊

Pathways to Purpose: FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS PUT MISSION INTO ACTION

On Saturday, February 15, 2025, Spring Hill College first-year students brought the Jesuit mission to life through a day of meaningful service across the city of Mobile. As part of the Pathways course— a core element of the College’s Pathways to Purpose program— students partnered with Campus Ministry to engage in volunteer work that fostered reflection, community, and connection.

Whether supporting families at the Ronald McDonald House or walking shelter dogs at the City of Mobile Animal Shelter, students experienced firsthand what it means to serve others with compassion and intention. Other groups brought joy to senior residents during bingo at the Little Sisters of the Poor, helped beautify First Light Community housing with yard work and landscaping, and rolled up their sleeves at the Mobile County Recycling Center to promote environmental stewardship. Still others joined the fun at the Coastal Alabama Down Syndrome

Society, lending their energy and creativity to help organize a Mardi Gras parade.

These service experiences are an integral part of the Pathways program’s deeper goal: to encourage vocational discernment rooted in the Jesuit tradition. Pathways to Purpose guides students in asking life’s big questions: Who am I called to be? How can I use my gifts for the good of others? What gives my life meaning and purpose?

By integrating classroom learning with hands-on service, Pathways challenges students to connect their academic, spiritual, and personal development in a holistic and enduring way. Inspired by the success of the February service day, the Pathways team hopes to offer more opportunities in the fall semester, continuing to strengthen the connection between community engagement and vocational exploration. ◊

Inside the Italy Center: A Student’s Journey

When you ask Walker Carlisle ‘26 to describe his time at the Italy Center in a single word, he needs no time to think.

“Dream,” he says in an instant, “I learned and saw more than I ever dreamed possible.”

That word— dream— doesn’t just reflect the sweeping

beauty of Bologna or the adrenaline of climbing the Dolomites. For Walker, it captures the soul of the Spring Hill College Italy Center: immersive, transformative, and deeply personal. What began as a study abroad program became something far more profound— a journey of purpose, people, and what it means to be truly present.

From the moment students step onto the cobblestone

streets of Bologna, they are immediately struck by the city’s deep history and rich academic culture. Life in Bologna quickly becomes second nature, as the city transforms into both home and classroom.

At the Social Hub, where students from around the world live together, Walker found a “beautiful chaos” that changed him. He shared meals with students from Spain, Hungary, and China, stayed awake talking in courtyards until sunrise, and picked up the rhythms of other cultures— enjoying present company after meals, learning new languages, and embracing a slower, more intentional way of living.

“The trip was everything I didn’t know I needed,” says Walker. “I was changed because of the people. It wasn’t just the place. It was the questions, the care, the effort.”

The Italy Center is more than just a place to study– it’s a

place where Jesuit values come alive. Grounded in Spring Hill’s mission to form students who are intellectually curious, socially responsible, and globally engaged, the Center bridges classroom learning with real-world impact. For Walker, that meant taking part in a six-week Humanities Internship, where he worked with migrant and first-generation students from Morocco, Ghana, Albania, and beyond. His days were filled with helping teens prepare for English exams, laughing over soccer games, and connecting over shared stories.

One memory lingers: an overnight stay on a farm with his students in the mountains outside Bologna. “It reminded me of coaching back home,” Walker says. “I wasn’t just helping, I was learning with them.”

The work continued across Italy— in Torino and Sicily— where he met young refugees who shared harrowing journeys of survival. “Some had crossed deserts, escaped mafias, and even been imprisoned in Libya for 11 months.

Some crossed the sea in canoes. They were all under 18,” he says. “It changed me.”

Through it all, the Italy Center never shied away from difficult conversations. It challenged students like Walker to wrestle with real questions: What does justice require of us? What does solidarity look like after we leave?

Of course, not all growth happens in the classroom. One of Walker’s most unforgettable experiences started with a broken-down rental car and ended hours later in the Dolomite Mountains at 2 a.m.

He and a close friend navigated a weekend filled with scooter rides on Italian highways, nearly missed trains, and sleeping in a car— all for the chance to climb and jump from mountain to mountain, scare off mountain lions, and swim in a freezing stream. “No fancy food. No sleep. No schedule. Just life,” Walker says. “That trip reminded me of what it feels like to be free.”

It’s this combination of structured academics and the spontaneity of true adventure that defines the Italy Center experience.

The true impact of the Italy Center lies in what students carry home with them. For Walker, it meant more than memories. It sparked a vision. Inspired by his internship experience, he’s currently developing a proposal to advance a trade school in Mobile, Alabama, that functions similarly to the Officina that he was exposed to through his internship.

“The Italy Center made my Jesuit education come alive,” Walker says. “It turned theory into action. It gave me a deeper purpose and continues to shape how I want to lead, serve, and live every day.”

The Spring Hill College Italy Center allows students to walk through a city rich in history, realizing that they are writing their own stories. It is not just a semester abroad, it is an opportunity to become something more— living boldly, questioning deeply, and returning home with a sharpened sense of purpose.

For students like Walker Carlisle, it’s not just a dream— it’s the kind of experience that changes everything. ◊

From The Hill to the Helm: Blake Stein

As the new principal of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School, Blake Stein ‘94 brings more than two decades of experience in education, a deep love for Catholic formation, and roots that trace back to The Hill in Mobile that first shaped his calling.

“Stepping into the role of Principal at McGill-Toolen is

both an incredible honor and a sacred responsibility,” says Stein. “McGill has a proud tradition of academic excellence, deep Catholic identity, and a strong sense of family. To lead this community, one that has so much tradition, is humbling. I feel called to serve not just as an administrator, but as a dedicated Catholic leader who helps our students grow spiritually, intellectually, and physically. It’s a mission, a blessing,

and a dream come true all at once.”

This sense of mission has been with Stein since hisearly days, but it was nourished and matured during his years at Spring Hill. He describes SHC as “foundational”— not only in terms of his education, but how it shaped him as a person and a leader.

“The Jesuit tradition of forming ‘men and women for others’ gave me a framework for how to live and lead,” he reflects. “Personally, it was where I learned the value of community. I met my wife, Ellen, at Spring Hill her positive influence made me the Catholic that I am today. The relationships that I developed with my teammates in the baseball program from 1991 to 1994 are still strong today and epitomize community.”

Community is a thread that is woven through Stein’s life— from his college years to his current work as principal. At McGill-Toolen, his vision to sustain and deepen a school culture where academic rigor and spiritual growth are intertwined, where students are prepared for college, careers, and lives of purpose and service.

“My hope is that McGill-Toolen continues to be a place where faith and excellence meet,” he says. “Where we form the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. Academically, we will continue to raise the bar and challenge all of our students. Spiritually, we want to develop followers of Christ who can defend their faith. Ultimately, we want to develop saints that lead students to heaven.”

Stein’s commitment to education is born out of immense gratitude for the educators who saw potential in him before he saw it in himself. “I’ve always believed in the transformative power of education,” he shares. “Early in

my life, I was shaped by teachers and administrators who challenged me, encouraged me, and helped me understand the impact one person can have on another’s future.”

Among those mentors, he fondly remembers SHC baseball coach Frank Sims, who left a lasting impact on Stein and generations of students over his 37 years at Spring Hill. “Frank Sims was like a father to us. His dedication to family and love for his players transcended our successes on the field. He had high expectations of us, not just as athletes, but as men. He taught us about being selfless and being there for each other.”

That selfless service now defines Stein’s leadership style and his belief in education as a vocation rather than simply a job. It’s a message he shares with young people considering their own call to teaching or school leadership.

“If you’re feeling the tug to teach or lead, listen to it,” he advises. “Teaching young people in their most formative years is to celebrate their victories, to lift them when they fall, and to help them discover who they were created to be. To teach in a Catholic school is not just a profession—it is a sacred calling to serve as both educator and evangelizer.”

As he leads McGill-Toolen into the future, Stein does so as a proud graduate of Spring Hill College, embodying the Jesuit ideal of servant leadership, rooted in faith, formed in community, and driven by mission. ◊

Rooted in Tradition, Ready for the World—Commencement 2025

There was a joyful atmosphere on Spring Hill College’s campus, as the Class of 2025 donned their regalia and mortarboards for a day that was four years in the making.

Held on Saturday, May 10, this year’s Commencement ceremony carried a sense of gratitude, relief, and celebration. With a severe risk of storms threatening to move the event indoors, many anxiously watched the forecast leading up to the big day. But in true Spring Hill fashion, the skies miraculously cleared that morning and the event proceeded as planned, bathed in sunlight on the lush Avenue of Oaks.

Graduates, families, faculty, and friends gathered to honor the achievements of the Class of 2025, sharing in a ceremony full of joy, reflection, and inspiration.

The keynote address was delivered by Fr. Mark A. Lewis, S.J., who spoke with warmth and conviction about the deeper meaning of commencement. He reminded the audience that graduation is not just the end of an academic journey, but a celebration of the passage of wisdom. He encouraged graduates to carry

forward a Jesuit-rooted commitment to the universal common good— building lives of purpose and compassion in service to others.

Ethan Sisk, chosen as the class orator, shared a powerful message about resilience. Reflecting humorously

on his time at SHC, he emphasized how the College equips students to face adversity with courage and determination— an essential skill as they prepare for life beyond The Hill.

He also underscored the value of leadership that uplifts and serves others, urging his fellow graduates to lead with empathy and intention.

As the tassels were turned and caps flew into the air for the iconic class photo on the steps of Byrne Hall, the Class of 2025 stepped confidently into the future—shaped by challenge, supported by community, and forever connected by the Spring Hill College spirit. ◊

CLASS OF 2025: GRADUATE SPOTLIGHTS

CURRENT LOCATION: Miami, Florida

DEGREE EARNED: Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics

NEXT STEP: Business Analyst, Silmar Electronics

Valeria Aguilera Martinez is diving into the professional world as a Business Analyst at Silmar Electronics, a Miami based company that specializes in distributing electronic security products and integrated solutions across the Americas. She uses data to drive strategic decisions and help optimize business performance.

Though her sights are set on graduate school in the future, Valeria is currently focused on building hands-on experience and growing her skills in the business world.

When reflecting on her time at Spring Hill College, one thing stands out above all else: the people.

“The amazing friendships I made are what I’ll always treasure most. The people truly made my time at Spring Hill unforgettable.”

CURRENT LOCATION: Washington, D.C.

DEGREE EARNED: Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Law with a minor in Public Relations and Advertising

NEXT STEP: M.A. in Legislative Affairs, George Washington University

Gavin Johnson is based in Washington, D.C., where he’ll begin his master’s program in Legislative Affairs this August at George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management.

In addition to his studies, Gavin is interning on Capitol Hill and aspires to work full-time in the Government Affairs space. He aims to help shape public policy while making a meaningful impact for both the organizations and the communities they represent.

Looking back on his time at Spring Hill College, one memory stands out:

“Parent Weekend during my freshman year— Showing my parents around campus and the city of Mobile was a special experience. I can’t thank Spring Hill enough for the best four years.”

VALERIA AGUILERA MARTINEZ ‘25
GAVIN JOHNSON ‘25

CURRENT LOCATION: Springfield, Missouri

DEGREE EARNED: Bachelor of Science in Health Science and a minor in psychology, with a certificate in Public Health

NEXT STEP: Doctorate of Audiology, Missouri State University

Brooke Borgmeyer is taking on dual paths in health and science. This fall, she begins her Doctorate of Audiology at Missouri State University, while wrapping up her Master of Public Health through Spring Hill College. She is already putting her skills to use as an intern with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services in their Substance Use Disorder Grant Program.

Between coursework and volunteering at a community garden in St. Louis, Brooke is making plans to pursue a career as an occupational therapist or industrial audiologist, promoting hearing health in the workplace.

Her fondest memory is not a grand event, but a simple joy:

“Those late-night hangouts with my roommates and friends in our apartment— just laughing and being together. I would do anything to have one more night of watching TV together.

CURRENT LOCATION: Mobile, Alabama

DEGREE EARNED: Bachelor of Science in Nursing

NEXT STEP: CCRN Certification, with plans for a Master’s and Doctorate’s Degree

Landon Clark is making an impact on the front lines of healthcare as an Intensive Care Unit Nurse at Mobile Infirmary. While managing the demands of this fast-paced environment, he is also preparing for his CCRN certification as the first step on his road to a Master’s degree and eventually a Doctorate in Nursing.

His commitment to professional growth is matched by the value he places on personal connections, something that became clear when reflecting on his favorite moments on The Hill.

“The friends I made through study dates over coffee are some of my favorite memories. I still talk to them daily even after a year post-grad.”

BROOKE BORGMEYER ‘24
LANDON CLARK ‘24

MOLLY MCINTOSH ‘25

CURRENT LOCATION: Portland, Oregon

DEGREE EARNED: Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education

NEXT STEP: M.A. in Educational Leadership, University of Portland

Molly McIntosh is preparing for a cross-country move to Portland, Oregon, where she will begin graduate studies this summer at the University of Portland. As a member of the Pacific Alliance for Catholic Education (PACE) program, she will be working toward her M.A. in Educational Leadership while also preparing for her role as a 4th-grade teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Over the next two years, Molly will serve in the classroom during the school year and spend her summers completing coursework. She will also be living in an intentional community with four other first-year PACE teachers, building strong relationships both professionally and personally.

Looking back on her time at Spring Hill College, one memory comes to mind:

“I’ll always remember our immersion trip to Costa Rica this past March. A group of fifteen of us hiked across the country, met incredible people, and learned so much about environmental justice. (And the sloths were really cute!)”

CURRENT LOCATION: Mobile, AL

DEGREE EARNED: Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship

NEXT STEP: Working on a mayoral campaign; considering graduate school

Ethan Sisk is currently engaged in Mobile’s political scene, where he is serving as an aide on a prominent mayoral campaign. With an eye toward graduate school, he is using this time to build on his passion for public service.

On campus, Ethan established started “The SHC Business Podcast” which featured several key speakers including Mobile Mayor, Sandy Stimpson. Ethan is known for his friendly spirit and sense of community— qualities that shaped his experience at Spring Hill and ones he plans to carry forward by forming connections wherever he goes.

That notion is captured in his most memorable moment on The Hill:

“Giving the commencement speech at graduation was surreal, and seeing the faces of my accomplished classmates and their beautiful families is something I will never forget.”
