RichardHowardwasinTePuke CBDlastmonthandhaswritten to TePukeNews sayingtheareawas aneyesoreandtheseatslookcheap andnasty.

Hestatesthe“roundunit”(deck) isofnouseforanything,thewrong heightforanyonetositonand lookscheap.

Heclaimsthereshouldbeparking spacesoutsidethepharmacy,which isthebusinesshewantedtovisit, sayinganareaoutsideapharmacy shouldhaveparkingaspeoplegoing thereareusuallysickorinjuredin someway.

“Futureartworksarealsoplanned,withthe supportoflocaliwi–TapuikaandWaitaha,” hesaid.

“Thesewillbedevelopedtoreflectashared vision,upholdingtheidentity,values, andhistoriesofmanawhenuathrough appropriatekōreroandartisticelements withinthespace.

AsatMonday,October13,wehaveresponded to257callsforthecalendaryeartodate.

Wehavebeenbacktobeingbusyagainwith13calls forthefortnight–fivefalsealarms,fourmotorvehicle crashes,twoofwhichrequiredextricationwithrescue equipment.Therewerefourmedicalassistswithmixed feelings–threeresultedinpatientssuccessfullybeing transferredtoambulancealive,butsadlyonewasfatal.

Thisisanunusualstatisticforus,asaround90%ofthe time,medicalcallsdonotresultinasuccessfuloutcome.

Onalighternote,weheldourannualhonoursnight onSeptember27torecogniseourmembers’serviceand commitmenttothisamazingcommunity.

Wemadespecialpresentationsofthankstosomekey supportersofourbrigadethroughout2024-2025:

Metalcohasregularlybeenabletoprovidecarsforusto cutupforpractice,whichisdifficultnowthatitnolonger hastheminTePuke.Whenweneedcars,theytruckthem fromotherpartsofthecountry.

SouthernCrossHorticulturehasprovidedgenerous sponsorshipofourrecentlyintroducedcadetprogramme. Itsfundinghasenabledustoprovideuniformand protectiveclothing,undertakeaStJohnfirstaidcertificate andseveralfieldtrips,includingtotheNationalTraining CentreinRotorua.Thecadetprogrammeisalready wellreceivedandwecouldnothavedoneitwithoutthe supportofSouthernCrossHort.

WiththehelpofBaygold,wehadtheopportunityto upgradeourvanlastyear.However,thebrigadehadsunk mostofouravailableresourcesandeffortsintoourshed project.Baygoldcametotherescuewithagenerouscash sponsorshiptoenableustopurchasethevan,whichisa vastimprovementontheoldone.

ArunMehan–Arunapproachedusaround18months agoofferingtomakeasignificantdonationtothebrigade everytimehesellsaproperty.Itwasthestartofaspecial relationship,andweareverygratefulforhissupport.

RunningcoachSelwynMawkeswas instrumentalinresurrectingthe TePukeHarriersprogrammeabout 10yearsago.

Heprovidedtrainingsixdaysaweek, includingtherunningsideofweekly athleticsnight.

Butwithannouncementlastweekofthe Harriersclosingitsdoors,peoplemaybe wonderingwhatMarkes’plansarenow.

Hesaidhewill“willcontinuecoaching”.

IfirstbecameaTePukeHarriermember backin1966.AfterlivinginTauranga for32yearsImovedbacktoTePukein January2012andwonderedwhatIwas goingtodoinmyretirement.

Itdidn’ttakemuchthoughttodecideto usemyrunningknowledgeandexperience tohelpkidswiththeirrunning.

Ihadbeencoachingonandoffsince 1975butnowitwastimetomakeareal difference.

IbecameaccreditedwithAthleticsNZ andsucceededwithotherendorsements tobeabletogivethekidsgoodadviceand healthytrainingopportunities.

Wenowfindourselvesinthe unfortunatesituationofTePukeAthletics havingtobeputintorecessandthishas animpactonTePukeHarrierswhich istoosmalltorealisticallybecomean incorporatedsociety.

Fortunately,PāpāmoaAthleticsClubhas steppedin,andwewillnowbejoining them,althoughIamstillhopefulthere

willbeaTePukeHarriersclubnext winterseason.

Familyupsetovermissinggraveornaments

Twoornamentshavedisappearedfromhis daughter’sgraveandDonSchwasswouldlike peopletokeepaneyeoutforthem.

Hetold TePukeNews thattheyhavealotofsentimental valueforthefamilyandhewouldliketoseethem returned.

HisdaughterLeilani’sgraveisintheNewTePuke Cemetery.

SchwasssaidhevisitedjustbeforeherSeptember6 birthdayandtheornaments–adeerandfawn,anda kingfisher–haddisappeared.

Hiswife,Lesley,hadalookaroundthecemeteryand couldn’tfindthem.

Thedeerandfawnhadrecentlybeencleanedupand repaintedbySchwassandtwoofhisgranddaughters. “Someonemayhaveseentheminsomeone’sgarden. Theyarenotinthecemeteryoronanothergrave,”hesaid. Thegraveisinthechildren’ssectionofthecemetery. Hesaidtheornamentsareofsentimentalvaluetothe familyanditisupsettingtheyhavedisappeared.

Schwasssaidiftheyhavebeentaken,then“Ijustthink it’sabitlow”.

WoolleyholdsNewZealandrecords inthepara-athleticsclassification(T38) categoryat100mand200mandhis 100mtimerankshim19thintheworld andfifthfastestofT38athletesfrom Commonwealthcountries.

Ifhemaintainsthatposition,he’snailed onforaplaceinScotland,andthat’sthe goalforWoolleythissummer.

T38isadisabilitysportclassification forpeoplewithcerebralpalsyand includespeoplewhohaveco-ordination impairments.

Bornwithpolymicrogyria,the19-yearoldhascerebralpalsy,ADHD,autism spectrumdisorder,Worster-Drought syndrome(cerebralpalsyofhismouth andthroatmuscles)andepilepsy.

Lastyeardystonia,causedbythe polymicrogyria,wasdiagnosed.

Hewillstarthissummercampaign

laterthismonth.Lastsummerhe managedrunthe100minlessthan 12seconds.

Insettinghispersonalbestof 11.91secondsattheNewZealand championships,healso,forthefirsttime, beatMitchJoyntwhohassincecompeted attheworldchampionships.

Withpercentagescomingintoplayin para-athletestoaccountforthedifferent categories,Woolleywasnotonlyfirst acrosstheline,buthealsobeatJoynton thepercentages.

“JaxonusedtotrainwithMitchandit’s alwaysbeenhisgoaltobeathim,”said mumTashBowden.

DuringwinterWoolleyhasbeentraining withcoachKerryHill,sometimesatthe track,othertimesonhillsatvariousparks, andhasalsobeentraininginthegym.

Hissummerschedulewillincludethe fourmeetsofTheSummerCircuitthat attractstopnationalandinternational athletes,andtheDaikinNightof5s meetinginAuckland.

Th ThennationalchampionshipsinMarch arealssoinAuckland.

Atthheendoftheseasonhewillhead toDarwinfortheOceaniaAreaGames andmmumTashBowdensaidthey’re considderingthepossibilityofgoingto theAuustralianchampionshipsinSydney inAprril.

FunddraisingfortheOceaniaGames, andthhepossibilityofgoingtothe CommmonwealthGames,hasbegun. AtthheOceaniaGames,Woolleywill compeeteinthe100m,200m,400mand longjuump,butonlythe100mforT38 athleeteswillberuninGlasgowwho stepppedintohostthegameswhen V Victoriapulledout,butwitha reducednumberofevents.

Shealsoqualifiedforthenational gymnasticschampionshipsinthe 11-12yearstumblingsectionwhereshe finished11th.
