Brimstone Developing carbon-neutral Portland cement.

S ECTO R

Building and Construction Technology HQ

Oakland, California, US

Founded in 2019, Brimstone developed a breakthrough, low-cost, carbon-negative process for producing ordinary portland cement and SCM, another key ingredient in concrete. The world produces over 4 billion tons of cement annually. The problem is that cement production accounts for 7.5% of global CO2 emissions, with a total climate impact just behind cars. The Brimstone process uses carbon-free calcium silicate rock instead of limestone to deliver a product identical to conventional materials and cost-competitive at scale. Brimstone’s decarbonized cement meets ASTM C150 standards for ordinary portland cement and can be used anywhere conventional cement is used. As the only clean cement company making industry-standard portland cement without emissions, Brimstone’s process clears a path to eliminate cement’s climate footprint—transforming it from a climate problem into a climate solution.
