Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic will eventually go away, the consequences for jobs and livelihoods across the globe will be felt for many years to come. The pandemic had—and will continue to have—especially severe effects on the most economically vulnerable people, informally employed women and younger workers in particular. The burden of the crisis has fallen unevenly across economic sectors; furthermore, the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing trends in poverty and income inequality which were already on the rise in many advanced, emerging and developing economies. The toll of COVID-19, quite simply, threatens to fully undo decades of progress and push tens of millions of people into job insecurity – not just today, but tomorrow as well. Unreasonable Impact, a multi-year initiative created with Barclays, was launched with the principle aim of scaling growth equity companies addressing these very challenges, whilst also creating thousands of jobs. The partnership needed now more than ever, is designed around ensuring that the fastest growing and most impactful companies across different geographies (Europe, the Americas, and Asia Pacific) are best positioned for scale. The launch of Unreasonable Impact UK & Europe 2021 sees the program support the 15 entrepreneurs that have been identified as critical drivers of change, with the incredibly innovative solutions necessary to meet these challenges at scale, from across the region. Over the course of the next few months, the now fully digital program will support these entrepreneurs through a series of virtual gatherings and sessions which have been prototyped and perfected to align them with mentors, specialists, advice, resources and capital, as well as with each other. With more than 160 ventures collectively reaching 260 million customers, supporting nearly 48,000 jobs in more than 180 countries and having raised over $4.7 billion in funding and over $3.6 billion in revenue, Unreasonable Impact’s mission is to ensure these ventures are supported in their goals of delivering the biggest impact globally.

Urchinomics is a restorative aquaculture venture aiming to turn an environmental challenge into a commercial, ecological and social opportunity. Overfishing of predatory species, climate change and pollution have allowed sea urchins to explode in population. Uncontrolled quantities of sea urchins overgraze kelp forests and seagrass meadows, turning once pristine and vibrant marine ecosystems into lifeless, barren deserts, or “urchin barrens”. Urchinomics specifically targets these ecologically destructive, empty sea urchins and re-homes them into their ranching systems, where they are converted from an ecological pest to premium sea urchin roe, or “uni”. And by removing them from the barrens, they help kelp forests recover to their original healthy ecosystem.
