Reflecting on the past year, it is humbling and an honor to take on the 96th Headlite role. I am thankful to follow so many remarkable leaders, including my dear friend and outstanding woman, Ms. Subriana Pierce. In addition to having a remarkable reserve of energy, Subriana has endless ideas which she turns into actionable results. Her theme for 2024 was “Level Up”, and she reinforced that mantra throughout her term with her actions. By rallying the army of Illuminators, great work was done, and our organization is stronger for it too.
Subriana and Allen welcomed the board of directors to the Hyatt in beautiful Long Beach, California for their Midyear Meeting and the start of their year. She conducted an effective breakout session during the board meeting, asking the members to help identify areas of interest and concern for the organization. Upgrading technology was one of the key areas, along with growing membership, fostering fellowship, and committing to education. Subriana instructed the Strategic Committee to begin work immediately on the new website. The unveiling will be at the 2025 CGA Gather California Conference.
Also in June, the Northgate leadership team welcomed the Illuminators for breakfast and an insightful store tour of their beautiful Mercado Gonzalez Market in Costa Mesa. A big thank you to Mike Hendry, Tom Herman, and the Gonzalez family for their gracious support and hospitality.
In September, we headed back down to Palm Springs for the CGA Strategic Conference. Productive meetings and great fellowship as the Illuminators did what they do best, show up and serve with excellence. Golf, greeting,
breakfast, lunch, and refreshments are just a few of the areas covered by the Illuminators at the conference. Way to Shine, my friends! Our Diversity and Inclusion event this year was in October in Foster city. The topic was “Finding Talent in Unexpected Places,” with an excellent panel lineup of retailers and suppliers.
A special shoutout to our special friend and wonderful ally, Karl Schroeder. Karl and his wife Aurelia opened their stunning home to the Illuminators for a special evening of gourmet pizza, bocce ball, and an amazing evening of great fellowship. Thank you for your endless support, Karl.
The 2025 WAFC Convention at the JW Marriott in Palm Desert was one for the books. The event was sold out even before the rallies this year, which is remarkable. Record attendance and meetings held, this conference had something for everyone. It turns out disco is not dead, and the themed event was a crowd pleaser for all the guests. Subriana had the idea of leading a town hall event for the Illuminators, and it was a huge
hit. Excellent turnout, with an all-star panel lineup, moderated by the incomparable Jackie LaPointe, PepsiCo. We gained new members during the hour-long session, and attendees gained a better understanding of the purpose of our organization. Great idea and outstanding execution, Subriana! The third annual Christianson Classic was held at the convention and the golf committee leveled up with a successful tournament. The work done behind the scenes to make both the CGA
and WAFC events a success is hard to imagine, and impossible to consider without our rock star supply team, led by the one and only Gary Pogue. Thank you, my friend, for your passion to serve with excellence.
Looking forward to seeing all of you in San Antonio, Texas this year for the 2026 WAFC Convention. Mark your calendars, May 2-6. And remember, this event will sell out early, so do not wait! You will not want to miss it.
There is much work to be done, and I am thankful to have an outstanding officer team to support me. Thank you, Tommy Huls, Sidelite, Marla McIntosh, Spotlite, and Monica Abarca, Tailite for your servant leadership. We are better together, and I am so thankful to collaborate with excellent leaders who are also friends. My theme this year is “rise together”. We will spend time
strengthening our organization, one member at a time. We are so fortunate to begin this process with our dear friend, Dr. Cynthia McCloud. She will conduct a workshop for the organization in October, “Becoming a Courageous Leader.” I cannot wait for this one.
A special shoutout to our Dimmed Headlites and Honorlites! The wealth of knowledge in this organization is remarkable. I treasure your thoughtfulness and insight. Thank you for your dedication to ensuring the organization will thrive for another one hundred years, and for helping us to shine the light of good fellowship in our industry. There is not another organization like the Illuminators, and it is because of this group.
Thank you and Shine On!
Lori Brown and Scott Nation 96th Illuminators Headlite NuCal Foods Lori.brown@nucalfoods.com
WOW—WHAT A YEAR!
This has truly been the most rewarding chapter of my career. If any of you have ever thought about joining the Board or stepping into an officer role, I can tell you firsthand—it’s life changing.
A big congratulations to Lori Brown of NuCal Foods and her partner, Scott Nation, as they step in as the new Headlite couple. They’re going to do incredible things, and I couldn’t be more excited for them!
A heartfelt thank you to my husband and partner in everything, Allen Pierce. Together, we’ve built priceless friendships and business connections through this journey. When you meet an Illuminator, the first question is always, “How can I help?”—the true heart of a servant leader. This organization is filled with them.
We had an amazing year continuing to ELEVATE the Illuminators. We had record breaking attendance at our WAFC Pre Convention rallies! We leveled up our retailer relationships hosting two exclusive retailer events, one with Northgate Gonzales Markets and one with Super King. We hosted the first ever partner event with NextUp Northern California. We hosted our first ever Illuminator Town Hall at WAFC 2025, sharing what it means to join the Illuminators. Karl Schroeder, President of Albertsons Safeway NorCal hosted some of our new and existing members selected through a Membership drive. It was our biggest year of driving membership! So proud of everyone that took part in the success of the year!
If you’re thinking of getting involved: start with the committees. That’s where relationships are built. Aspiring to serve on the Board (as a Hilite) takes experience chairing or co-chairing at least three committees— and it’s a competitive, coveted three-year term. From there, one lucky Hilite each year joins the officer team as a Tailite, then moves through the chairs—Tailite, Spotlite, Sidelite, and finally, Headlite.
Leadership growth and industry relationships intersect here. Since 1928, this organization has proudly served the grocery industry, and I’m honored to have contributed to the Illuminator legacy.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for letting me serve, and as always, “How can I help you?” #Shine On!
“When you meet an Illuminator, the first question is always,
“How can I help?” — the true heart of a servant leader. ”
The Illuminators is an organization of vendors and suppliers dedicated to developing and enhancing key relationships within the grocery industry, providing opportunities for education and leadership, and supporting the Illuminators Educational Foundation.
“The Illuminators will be the most admired grocery organization of vendors and suppliers in America”
In September 1928, just prior to the annual convention of the California Retail Grocers and Merchants Association, a group of allied tradesmen gathered to consider a plan for improving methods of entertaining at grocery meetings. This plan met with unanimous approval, and during that same month The Illuminators came into being.
From the start, the roster of membership has been a “Who’s Who” of the leaders in the food industry. There were fifty-one members the first year, who pioneered the infancy of the organization. One of the principal responsibilities has been to provide fun and relaxation at the annual gathering of grocers.
SPREAD THE LITE OF GOOD FELLOWSHIP WITHIN THE RETAIL FOOD INDUSTRY.
• INDUSTRY INVOLVEMENT – Individuals engaged on an equal basis for business development at the highest level.
• OPPORTUNITY – Exposure for you and your company to include learning, leadership, communication, and personal development.

You get out what you put in and when you get involved, you are rewarded several times over. We encourage members to take leadership roles on committees that help support the California Grocers Association (CGA) Strategic Conference and the Western Association of Food Chains (WAFC). After chairing four committees or events Illuminator members become eligible for nomination to the Constellation of Hilites (Board Members).

“... it is humbling and an honor to take on the 96th Headlite role. I am thankful to follow so many remarkable leaders, including my dear friend and outstanding woman, Ms. Subriana Pierce.”
- Lori Brown, 96th Illuminator Headlite
The Illuminators are truly the unsung heroes of our industry gatherings. While others are networking and learning, they are working tirelessly behind the scenes. Their dedication and attention to detail create the warm, welcoming environment that makes our conventions and conferences so successful.
Beyond their incredible hospitality, the Illuminators’ commitment to supporting education through the Illuminators Educational Foundation speaks volumes about their passion for the future of our industry. By investing in the next generation, they are ensuring our industry remains vibrant, innovative, and strong for years to come.
Thank you, Illuminators, for your hard work, generosity, and unwavering support. You truly brighten every event you touch!

“There is no way the WAFC would be successful without the leadership, dedication and hard work of the Illuminators. This volunteer work has got to be the “Best in Class” in the industry.”
Mike Servold, Vice President Operations Food 4 Less
“Make it Personal” means to take that extra step to help someone in our industry who needs it. Or to make a phone call or send a card instead of sending a text or an e-mail. Educate and encourage young people who enter the industry to realize that a great career is possible in the Grocery Industry. It doesn’t take too much more time and can make a big difference.
Tracy “Skip” Lape Dimmed Headlite 2020 Advantage Solutions.
When I hear those words, I know I am talking to a servant leader. Servant leaders are a special breed. They do not wonder if you need help, or even if they can help with your exact need. They know they can jump in and help in any way, and in doing so is also very gratifying to them. The Illuminators is made up of an army of servant leaders, dedicated professionals with “day jobs,” and yet they find the time and energy to passionately serve in the industry we love, with some of the best people on the planet.
The Illuminators are the secret sauce behind several amazing events, including WAFC and CGA conferences. The planning process for these events begins months before the first attendees fill out their registration form. The behind-the-scenes work is planned out to the smallest detail, and the troops are rallied to fill their positions. There are twenty-four Illuminator committees staffed by incredible volunteers who work together to make it happen.
And speaking of rallying, each Winter, the Illuminators gather all their industry friends in Northern California, Southern California, Arizona and the Pacific Northwest to create excitement for the upcoming WAFC convention in May. These rallies were so popular that all four rallies sold out this year. The committees embraced the 80’s theme and had the rooms sparkling with sequin, bellbottoms and tie-dye shirts. The rallies always set the tone for the upcoming convention, and this year’s rallies set new records and did not disappoint.
In addition to the 80’s theme for one of the magical evening, Old Hollywood was featured the following night with gowns, furs and some dapper dudes circulating around the room. The talented WAFC team is always looking for ways to surprise and delight us. After hosting the convention at the JW Marriott in Palm Desert for several years, the WAFC team really upted their game this year with theme nights, a pickleball demonstration, and a drone light show. The 3rd Annual Christiansen Classic kicked off the week with a record number of golfers selling out both golf courses at the resort.
Fall quickly arrives and it’s time to start gearing up for the CGA convention in Palm Springs. The Illuminators are engaged and ready for another successful event. The committees were there to support the hotel staff serving meals, greeting attendees, and ensuring all our guests had an amazing experience. The rally committees are already busy planning for next year’s events, where we’ll be hosting rallies in NorCal, SoCal, Pac Northwest, and for the first time, Boise, Idaho. So yes, you can help! There’s always room for a servant leader at the Illuminators. Thank you for joining us on this wild and rewarding journey. Shine On!
We gather in spirit and memory to celebrate the extraordinary life of Carole Ann (Sustala) Christianson, a woman whose light illuminated every room, every organization, and every heart she touched, mine included.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, and raised with love by Dorothy and John Sustala, Carole’s journey was defined by resilience, brilliance, and boundless generosity. From her early days at Carson High School to her pioneering ascent through the food and beverage industry, Carole shattered ceilings and built bridges. She was a visionary leader, the first woman to hold titles that had long been reserved for others, and she did so with grace, grit, and a contagious sense of humor.
Her professional accomplishments were vast; Director of Trade Development at Dr Pepper, Vice President at Coca-Cola Los Angeles, founder of Christianson West LLC, and Chief Operating Officer of the WAFC. But Carole’s legacy was never just about titles. It was about transformation. She elevated every organization she touched, championed education, and mentored countless individuals who now carry her torch forward.
Carole’s heart was even bigger than her résumé. Her devotion to the Illuminators spanned over five decades, culminating in her historic term as the first female Headlite. Her philanthropic spirit found its deepest expression in her work with City of Hope, where she and her family launched Kids 4 Hope, a movement that has raised over $20 million for pediatric cancer research. Her impact was recognized with the “Spirit of Life” award, but her true reward was knowing she had made a difference.
She was a loving wife to Paul, a proud mother to Ashlee and Amanda, and a joyful “Gigi” to Jackson, Caroline, and Rex. Her family was her greatest treasure, and her love for them radiated in every story she told, every photo she shared, and every moment she cherished.
Carole’s life was a symphony of service, laughter, leadership, and love. She taught us to lead boldly, love deeply, and live fully. As we honor her memory, let us carry forward her legacy, not just in our words, but in our actions. Let us be the light she so effortlessly spread and aspire to be the “best ever”. Always in our hearts, Carole. Rest in peace and give Paul a big hug for us. Shine On, my friend. Love you.
With gratitude and remembrance, Lori Brown, 96th Illuminators Headlite
“Every one of us had a unique relationship with Carole, but one thing was for sure – her message was always surrounded by love and rooted in passion and encouragement,” — “Carole had a unique way of making all of us feel important and special.”

Subriana Pierce 2025
In June 2024, the Board of Directors gathered in Long Beach for our incredible Mid-Year session of planning with our fellow Illuminator family and friends. Subriana Pierce and her rockstar husband Allen, warmly welcomed us to the lovely Long Beach Hyatt to kick off her theme for the year “Level Up”. We started the weekend off right with snacks and refreshments in the Pierce Headlite Suite overlooking the beautiful Long Beach harbor. Great opportunity for good fellowship, sharing fun stories, and just catching up with old friends. Always a treat to be served by our veteran Barlites, who managed to hold on to their aprons, some even newly bedazzled, for many years. Great work Dimmed Headlites! You still got it!
The annual board meeting was held Saturday morning, followed by a free afternoon of fun and relaxation. Some of the attendees chose to shop, others sat by the pool and others enjoyed an afternoon of catching up. Saturday night the new Hilites were named at dinner. They could hardly contain their excitement later that night after dinner when they donned their new aprons and became the newest Barlites! There were signature drinks, master mixology, and a ski/shot glass apparatus used enthusiastically for the “shotskis”. This shotski originated from Dimmed Headlite Siegel’s year and may have become an annual tradition. Needless to say, it was a memorable evening.
We welcomed our 2024 Hilites:
Amanda Christianson, ECOS
Jake Johannes, ECOS
Michael Rhee, Re: Circle Solutions
Chris Herpich, RRD
Loren Llena, Vestcom
Over the weekend, Subriana shared her thoughts with us about her journey to this pinnacle leadership role. Subriana is a true servant leader, involved in so many organizations supporting women, emerging brands with her foundation and serving on the CGA board. When Subriana says “level up’, she means it. The team kicked off several projects coming out of this weekend to include many “firsts” for the organization. We held our 1st Annual Illuminators Town Hall at WAFC, Regional Meet-Ups began, and a wildly successful Membership Drive partnering with Albertsons, Karl Schroeder. We left on Sunday morning feeling energized for the coming months with our new leadership team in place.
Thank you for your leadership, Subriana and Allen. Shine On!

I would like to thank the Illuminators for another year of unwavering support and for this opportunity to reflect on the past year at the Western Association of Food Chains (WAFC).
The 2025 WAFC Convention in Palm Desert was another recordbreaking year in attendance and business meetings. It was also a major year of growth for WAFC as we continue to work hard to move our educational programs forward by streamlining all our processes in an attempt to educate more people in our industry. We do not want to b e the barrier between our people getting started on their educational journey. We need to simplify how our retailers, wholesalers, suppliers, students, and schools work together to help educate our industry through WAFC’s initiatives.
Educationally, we had a record-breaking year of graduates in our Retail Management Certificate Program, and we launched our “English at Work” Program. Cynthia McCloud has announced her retirement from the highly successful Food Industry Management (FIM) Program and passed the baton to Andrea Dimond. We have no doubt that enrollment in our USC programs will be beyond capacity again in 2026 and we know Andrea will take our USC educational programs to new heights in the future. The grocery industry is moving fast and at WAFC and we’re doing our best to keep up with the pace of our growing landscape.
We continue to collaborate with our supplier community by exposing them to the benefits of working and investing in WAFC. The goal is to bring more value to our donor sponsors’ investment at WAFC by creating more benefits and exposure to our retailer companies, not only at the convention but throughout the year. We’re always looking for new ways and programs to help our supplier companies grow their business through exposure, networking possibilities and educating our workforce.
As far as the convention goes, our 2025 convention in Palm Desert was the largest attended and most successful by all measures in WAFC convention history. The survey results were over the top and the feedback was tremendous. Dana Hendry and I still have lots of areas to improve to make our lofty convention goals, but I know we are on the right track. We are excited for everybody to see what Kevin Lovell, Lori Brown and Dana have planned for us in San Antonio in 2026.
Hopefully, you have noticed a change in the narrative around WAFC messaging these past several years and witnessed the new energy around our educational programs. If your organization would like to get more involved in WAFC and investing in the future of food retailing, please reach out to me directly and we can work on a plan to include your company in our WAFC family.
Thank you again for the opportunity to express our passion to educate. Pat Posey, COO WAFC
As the President and CEO of the California Grocers Association (CGA), Ron Fong leads a statewide organization representing approximately 300 retailers who operate around 6,000 physical stores. Additionally, California’s grocery market, encompassing both association members and others, generates roughly $118 billion in sales and employs nearly 820,000 people across the state.
Growing up, Fong had a front row seat to the hyper-competitive grocery. His grandfather, who immigrated from China, opened Carmichael Supermarket in 1941. Fong and his two sisters worked at the store growing up, alongside the rest of the family.
He often shares that, from the age of 6, he was already helping out by bagging groceries, serving customers, and taking on any tasks that needed to be done. With parents who worked seven days a week, he learned the same strong work ethic, making it a natural part of his daily life. At its peak, Carmichael Supermarket had four locations in the Sacramento region.
Fong took charge of CGA in 2008, following a 12-year stint with the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues, where he served as vice president of state government affairs. Since joining the association, Fong, who holds a law degree from New College of California, has concentrated on lobbying, advocacy, and launching new government relations programs for the association. He notes that navigating these efforts can be challenging due to the ever-evolving political landscape, especially in a state like California, where Democratic and Republican business priorities often clash.
Fong identifies overregulation and rising labor costs as major hurdles for CGA members, complicating the business environment in California. He and his team regularly engage with legislators to discuss the potential negative impacts of proposed environmental or labor bills on grocery stores. In recent years the association has also built out new capabilities in digital advocacy and traditional media engagement. This year, the Association reimagined its annual conference with a fresh identity and venue. The first ever Gather California takes place at the The Westin Rancho Mirage Resort in late September. With a renewed emphasis on connection, Gather brings the California grocery community together to connect with industry leaders, explore emerging trends, and build lasting relationships.
Fong is married to his wife, Carol, and they have a son named Jaden, who recently concluded graduate school at Stanford. Holding a Bachelor of Science from California State University, Sacramento, he is a proud member of the California State University Foundation Executive Board. In 2024, Ron was recognized as a Most Admired CEO by the Sacramento Business Journal, and in 2025 he was named a Sacramento State Distinguished Alumni honoree.
The Illuminators Educational Foundation is celebrating our 40th year in 2025 and we are very proud of where we are today. With your help the IEF has provided more than $1.8 Million in scholarships to deserving women and men in our industry.
This year we will eclipse the $2M mark and these scholarships are awarded to people in our industry and their immediate family, whether they are pursuing careers in the grocery industry or not. Awards are granted to those pursuing medical or legal careers, social workers and those looking to learn a trade like an auto mechanic or air conditioning repair.
We appreciate the support we’ve received through the years and our goals are to (1) insure those that are eligible to apply KNOW they are eligible so we can get more people applying and (2) make it easy for our donors to contribute. Your participation in many WAFC, CGA and Illuminator events can contribute but we also make it easy for you to set up a small monthly contribution if you desire.
On behalf of the Illuminator Educational Foundation, our Board of Trustees and Advisors, we say thank you! Thank you for playing a part in changing the trajectory of people’s lives.
Paul Kamholz President Illuminators Educational Foundation
