MONDAY 20TH OCTOBER 2025
MONDAY 20TH OCTOBER 2025
Our second fixture of the season is the well-known Charity Raceday run alongside the Bob Champion Cancer Trust. Bob’s is a remarkable story, as a person, within the sport of racing, and even on the big screen! However, I’m sure it is universally agreed that setting up this wonderful Charity that raises hundreds of thousands for Cancer Research every year is the best achievement. Today we are here to try and raise further funds for this important cause. This Raceday is just one of many important days for the Trust so do look at their website to find out more. Please feel free to donate and please have a look at the wonderful silent auction display in the Final Fence Restaurant entrance.
Today we have 42 runners going to post over 7 races with £81k of prize-money on offer. Our feature on the track today is our fourth race worth £22,350, The Sir Christopher Wates Memorial Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 3) which was won by Menaggio last year beating War Lord by 9l. Although only 5 horses go to post, this year’s renewal promises to be highly competitive, and we extend our best wishes to all the horses and connections not only in this race, but across the entire day’s card.
I would like to thank today’s sponsors, Recycled Products Ltd, Betty Chantler and Trevor Downing, SIS, Friends of Peter Gander, BetGoodwin, Lady Wates, the Embiricos Family and Back British Farming, along with our Partners; Southern Cranes and Access Ltd, BetGoodwin and Kalm Kitchen for their tremendous support for the 2025/26 Season,
We will also be presenting The Jeffrey Peate Trainers and Jockeys Challenge Final results for the 2024/25 Season after the third race. It was hard fought across both trainers and jockeys with Gary & Josh Moore winning the trainers title and Brendan Powell winning the jockeys title. Congratulations to Gary, Josh and Brendan and we look forward to an equally compelling season again.
Looking ahead, we have four racedays before Christmas, so be sure to book early to secure our best-priced tickets. The festive fixtures are always in high demand, and if you’re considering hospitality on either Sunday 1st December or Sunday 15th December, we strongly recommend contacting our team now to avoid disappointment.
For the first time, we’re also offering Christmas Party Nights throughout early December. To find out more and reserve your place, please visit www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk.
Have a great day.
Best wishes

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.
Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.
Chase - A race run over fences.
Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.
Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.
Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.

Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse.
Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper.
Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday.
Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.
Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.
Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race.
Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.
Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.
Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race.
Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.

KAJIKIA justified short odds in comfortable style over an extended 2m4f at this venue last month and makes just his second start over the smaller obstacles. With the likelihood of lots more to come, he will prove a tough nut to crack. Diamond Hunter has shown ability between the flags, finishing second in three from his four starts, and the son of Diamond Boy warrants a market check. Any market confidence behind hurdling newcomer Dayzee would be interesting.

toteeachway: Diamond Hunter
KING OF THE STORY readily took care of Gone In Sixty by three lengths at Worcester last month and might have been let off lightly with just a 5lb rise. The son of Yeats is in the form of his life at present and is worth sticking with. The aforementioned Gone In Sixty is likely to be thereabouts again, while Nevendon looks best of the rest.
totewin: King Of The Story
toteeachway: Gone In Sixty
EZ TIGER had Lady Caro (third) behind when filling the runner-up spot over C&D last month and is expected to confirm that form. Alex Hales’ charge remains on a workable rating and has a previous C&D victory to further aid his cause. Hill Station was denied by the smallest of margins into second at Fontwell on his most recent outing and is a solid proposition to watch out for. Fascinating Lips is next best.
totewin: Ez Tiger
toteeachway: Hill Station
ALIEN STORM hit the woodwork on his return to action at Fontwell last month and the handicapper may have been kind to leave his mark alone. With the Charlie Longsdon string in fine order, it would be no surprise to see the son of Getaway regain the winning thread. Hecouldbetheone was convincingly beaten into second in this grade at the same venue earlier in the month, but is relatively unexposed over fences and might be worth another chance. War Lord isn’t ruled out either.
totewin: Alien Storm
toteeachway: Hecouldbetheone
NAP HAND makes a lot of sense in this handicap hurdle as he’s coming in here race-fit following a creditable second-placed effort here last month. A useful performer on the Flat, Alan King’s charge is unexposed in this sphere and likely has more to offer. Of the others, Tapley is a twotime C&D winner on an attractive mark and he’s noted along with the lightly-raced Paul Nicholls inmate Nardaran.
totewin: Nap Hand
toteeachway: Tapley
Just the four declared here and both Tropical Speed and Blackacre were engaged to run at Stratford and Newton Abbot respectively on Saturday. Both are given a squeak if turned out quickly here, but it might be worth concentrating on MASTERDREAM, who has won his last three starts in this sphere and was kept ticking over courtesy of a spin on the level at Bath 11 days ago. Ken Roy might do better now sent chasing after undergoing wind surgery.
totewin: Masterdream
toteeachway: Ken Roy
STAMINA CHOPE is the sole C&D winner in the field and that will stand her in good stead off a light weight. Third at Worcester in August, she certainly showed a lot more when fourth here last month as she was beaten a little over two lengths and perhaps given a bit too much to do. Dave Roberts’ charge seems to be coming back to her best and makes more appeal than Hurst Hill, who enjoyed a profitable summer campaign. Keep an eye on Kottayam too.
totewin: Stamina Chope
toteeachway: Hurst Hill

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

KAJIKIA can provide Paul Nicholls with a second successive win in this race. Robbo is good enough on the Flat to think he can make an impact in a race like this if taking to his new discipline. Chris Gordon point recruit Diamond Hunter is one to note in the betting.

The interest and enthusiasm generated by racing’s greatest fairytale led to the foundation of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983. Since then the Trust has raised over £16 million.
The Trust opened the Bob Champion Cancer Research Laboratories in 2000, in conjunction with the Institute of Cancer Research, creating the first male dedicated research centre in Europe The Trust’s second facility, the Bob Champion Research and Educational Building, was opened in February 2015 within the campus of the University of East Anglia. It is within these facilities that their current prostate cancer research projects take place The Team at UEA are making progress with their bacteria research project led by Professor Colin Cooper The aim being to target the bacteria and prevent, or slow, the development of aggressive prostate disease. And the Trust is delighted to announce the grant of a new memorial award, The Nick & Valda Embiricos New Investigator Award, to Dr Matthew Blackledge, at the ICR which is very exciting. There is hope that the technology being developed within this project could also be applied to other cancer types.

Following the death in July of Mum, she will by now be happily reunited with my late Dad, along with many friends, family and animals that have gone before. What a life they all had and what amazing memories.
The highlight must be the story of Bob Champion and Aldaniti (Niti) as both mum and dad were instrumental in the fairy-tale that was born in the 1981 Grand National.
After Niti injured his tendon for the second time in a race at Sandown in 1980 the vet said the kindest thing was to put him to sleep. Mum’s response was “that is totally out of the question” …so Niti came home to Barkfold to begin his long rehabilitation. Mum, with Beryl who looked after the horses at Barkfold Manor Stud, were both fundamental to his successful recovery, with many months of box rest and then enduring many months of walking on the roads to regain his strength.
Aldaniti was Bob Champion’s Grand National dream and along with Niti he was fighting his own personal battle with testicular cancer. Mum, Dad and Josh Gifford had made a commitment to Bob that Niti would be there for him. The probability of either getting anywhere near a racecourse again, let alone lining up at the start of the Grand National, were exceptionally low.
The pair overcoming all odds won their comeback race at Ascot in February 1981. Then, both battle-hardened warriors stepped onto the famous turf at Aintree on the 4th April 1981. They galloped relentlessly, jumping over all those formidable fences without putting a single foot wrong, and then pulled away up the long run in to win a victory that must be one of National Hunt racing’s most memorable stories.
It was equally fitting that a key legacy of the race was the birth of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983.
Dad was instrumental in starting the Bob Champion Cancer Trust which up to date has raised over £16 million and has helped form part of the largest male dedicated research facility in Europe, situated at the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, Surrey. And for our research team at the Bob Champion Research and Education Building at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, Norfolk.
My family would like to thank the directors of Plumpton racecourse for their extremely generous support of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust though this charity raceday, also for enabling the Nick and Valda Memorial Novices’ Chase today. Could the race reveal a future Grand National prospect? Who knows but we do know the importance of having hopes and dreams, because sometimes they do come true!

DECLARED RUNNERS 9
2024: BELLES BENEFIT (IRE) 8 12 0 Harry Bannister 17-2 (Ben Case) 9 ran
Tongue Strap worn by No. 1, 2, 4. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 2, 6, 8. Running for the first time since Wind Surgery No. 4. Stewards Note:
LUNA RUN: Following its run on 21/9/2025 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed in the straight.
Probable S.P’s: 9-4 Hurst Hill (IRE), 4-1 Luna Run (IRE), 9-2 Stamina Chope (FR), 6-1 Eliza Dolittle (IRE), 10-1 Princesse Milania (IRE), 14-1 Kottayam (FR), 40-1 Glorious Mist (IRE), 50-1 Chelsea Annie (IRE), 250-1 Porridge (IRE)
It’s fair to say that HURST HILL hasn’t really gone on from her Newton Abbot success in two subsequent starts, but she’s nevertheless finished second on both occasions and will probably have enough in the tank to take this. Luna Run has solid claims off this mark and is feared most ahead of Eliza Dolittle and Stamina Chope.
