York Racecard - Saturday 11th October

THE CORAL SPRINT 2025

Welcome to York Racecourse for the final raceday of our 2025 season; a day with seven fascinating races offering a record prize fund of £330,000, including a six-figure purse for the Coral Sprint Trophy. I hope you have a successful and thoroughly enjoyable day.

It has been a tremendous year on the track so far, with a remarkable sixteen Group One winners from 2025 already seen racing at York this season (gold star if you can name them!)*. The first three home in the Tattersalls Acomb (Gewan, Distant Storm & Italy) will hope the feature at Newmarket adds to that tally. Whether it was from the second day of the season back in May when American Affair began a journey to Royal Ascot glory for trainer Jim Goldie Or perhaps Asfoora landing an early blow in the sporting rivalry between England and Australia when winning the Coolmore Nunthorpe for her Victoria based connections. The likes of Trawlerman, Ombudsman and Never So Brave carry strong Knavesmire runs into QIPCO British Champions Day next weekend. We will then hope to see York form taken to the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar - where the fascinating prospect of Sky Bet Ebor winner, Ethical Diamond, representing Willie Mullins has been tabled. I hope you have enjoyed an action-packed season to date and thank you for your support.

Our feature sponsor, Coral, have been associated with this day since 1979 and the £100,000 Coral Sprint Trophy is the flagship race Rewarded with a full field of twenty-two, will the sponsor have to pay out on the Richard Fahey trained Strike Red for the third time in four renewals?

Comical Point in our Pattern race of the day, the Listed Rockingham Stakes, is one of several runners today for trainer Andrew Balding, as Team Kingsclere look to build on their lead in the Charles Clinkard Top Trainer Championship Yesterday, the continuing battle saw William Haggas join Andrew Balding after an on the day double, with the pair on ten wins apiece, while Karl Burke move into a share of third with the Gosden’s. See p22-23 for more details on this season’s competition.

The meeting will also see the conclusion of the season long contest to be top jockey at York. In the Living North-sponsored contest, after a memorable Sky Bet Ebor Festival, Oisin Murphy and William Buick currently lead the way, tied on 9 winners. That the top three ride at Newmarket today leaves the door just ajar for a truly memorable day by either Tom Marquand, Danny Tudhope or PJ McDonald, who are the only men who can eclipse them. Please see page 37 for the story so far.

Writing of jockeys, many congratulations to Jason Hart who posted both 100 for the season and 1000 for his UK career when partnering Rhapsody at our last meeting, watch out for a presentation to him this afternoon.

Remember if you want to follow all the action from Newmarket and York, then use the Racing TV zone on the Roberto lawn, both a Guinness and Kylie Minogue Wines Bar are close by, good food to go, seating and the channel on a giant screen.

Thank you again for your support today and throughout this year, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your experiences at York this season and made some memories. Winter well and I hope you can return for our new season on Wednesday 13th May 2026, take advantage of a price freeze when the tickets go on sale online, this very afternoon.

NAME THE COMBINATION

Can you name the horse, trainer and jockey who teamed up to land last years Coral Sprint Trophy?

1 2

WORK OUT THE WINNER

How many 2025 Group One winners have been seen on the Knavesmire so far this season? (Deep respect if you can name them) 3

Can you name the winners from the pictures below? If you need a clue, they have won a Group race at York this season 12 4 3

WHAT WAS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS

Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get an autumn shower. For these October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table

BUSTARDTHORPE END

SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT

In August 2024 we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop

MR MOWITALL

Joining the grounds team over winter were seven robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself

THE TEAM NEVER REST

Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 7,000 pints of paint have been used by the team and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).

A LIVING FLOWER WALL

OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND

Earlier in the year the flowers were petunia and petchoa but as we head into autumn it is cyclamen, all were grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.

THE BARS HAVE IT

Over last Winter a number of bars were given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Kylie Minogue Wines Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie

NEW ON THE MENU

Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.

If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.

Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Centre

This race is part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 300 races in the land.

Only open to two-year-old horses yet weight allowances for fillies mean the boys carry more weight to reflect their greater strength, notice how Indy B is one of six fillies who get to start off a lower point.

An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

RaceiQ Par Time: 1m 11.66s (Based on going description: Good) Course Record: 1m 8.90s by Tiggy Wiggy (21-Aug-14)

Longest Traveller: KILLAVIA trained by R Millman, Cullompton, 275 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 9th October

KNAVESMIRE TIP

The progressive DIVISION is readily suggested as the first one to consider A full-brother to last year’s Lowther winner Celandine, the William Haggas-trained colt built on a promising second on his debut at Windsor with a brace of cosy wins in novice events at Haydock and Yarmouth last month. Under a penalty for the latter, the son of Kingman appears ready for a step up in class. Comical Point is feared the most after his solid fourth-placed finish in the Gimcrack. Flying Comet and Rydale Frosty are other strong contenders.

Defending champion Oisin Murphy sits in front after fine season on the Knavesmire. He’s chased in second by William Buick, with the pair separated by placed efforts. Clifford Lee meanwhile sits just two behind the leaders on seven wins. With the leaders on duty in Newmarket, this leaves the door just ajar for a truly memorable day by either Tom Marquand (needing 3), Danny Tudhope (needing 4) and PJ McDonald (needing 6), who are the only men who can eclipse them. A prize of £2,500 as well as the chance to put the Skeaping Bronze on your mantelpiece, awaits the victor.

Time for our first handicap, such races are designed for close competition so, the handicapper, is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

This one is for 3yo+ horses run over one and a quarter miles, with Grey Cuban at the top of the scale

The high handicap rating band of 86-105 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the upcoming Ashes cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer, no horse ever reached 317). Why not visit the Parade Ring to see them up close before making your final selection.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

PER CONTRA is versatile regarding ground and returns here with a big chance of backing up a comfortable success notched at Newcastle 13 days ago A 6lb higher mark complicates matters, but the Tim Easterby-trained four-year-old counters that with plenty of course experience and has nothing to fear on the forecast going. Fresher than many, Erzindjan has dropped to workable mark and makes the shortlist after just three encouraging runs this season. Tony Montana, Insanity and the class-dropping Grey Cuban are others with solid credentials.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Soon after making an impressive winning debut at Beverley, HE’S WALIIM was pitched into the Solario at Sandown in August. There was no disgrace in his performance in that race, as taking on stronger company on slower ground was a stiff test for just his second start. Back on track with a close second to a progressive type over a mile at Kempton most recently, the son of Too Darn Hot could be tough to reel in if he gets a flying start here. Night Patrol and Laazm are less exposed than the rest and are others notable options.

The Coral Sprint Trophy FACT FILE:

WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?

Six furlongs

Prize money

£100,000

Today’s feature race began life in 1979 as a conditions race with a prize fund of £8,000

After five renewals the race was reclassified as a handicap. The race has continued to blossom and now offers prize money of £100,000

HAS IT ALWAYS ATTRACTED BIG FIELDS?

Yes, only when Handsome Sailor won in 1986 for Michael Dickinson did the field fall into single figures. Over the past ten years, the average field size has been around about 20 runners. Today the new super size stalls that York Racecourse purchased means 22 were declared.

WHO WAS THE FIRST WINNER?

Runnett, partnered by Willie Carson carrying a whopping 10st 1lb, beat four rivals in 1979 For the next two years the race attracted small, but top quality fields. Steve Cauthen won on Jester the following season and the locally trained flying mare Soba was an odds-on winner under the late David “Dandy” Nicholls 30+ years ago

HOW FARES THE FAVOURITE?

Not very well. Traditionally, the race has been a graveyard for favourite backers with just a handful of market leaders having scored in two decades. Kaldoun Kingdom ended a miserable run for market leaders when prevailing at odds of 6/1 in 2009 for Richard Fahey, 2015 and 2024 saw 7/1 and 6/1 winners respectively but on the whole, those at the front of the market tend to find life difficult. Prior to that you needed to go back to 1995 and Double Bounce to find an outright winning favourite.

ANY NOTABLE NAMES ON THE ROLL OF HONOUR?

The Tatling won in 2002 and the gelding became a top sprinter with 17 victories and earnings of more than £680,000 His victories included the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and he was runner-up three times in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes here on Knavesmire. Meanwhile, Borderlescott won this is 2005 and he is of course a dual winner of the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes having triumphed in the Group 1 sprint in 2008 and 2009. 2023 winner Montassib has since won a Listed race and the Group One Sprint Cup at Haydock this season. Montassib

LEADING TRAINERS?

David O'Meara is no stranger to having winner's at York and has added the Coral Sprint Trophy to the races he now targets. Gulliver has been the source of his most recent success but he also won the race with Intisaab back in 2016. Richard Fahey has further added to the Yorkshire-based trainers prevalence in the race, courtesy of Strike Red in 2022 and 2024, so it does pay to follow their runners.

LEADING RIDER?

Frankie Dettori achieved the joint best record, with two wins for Luca Cumani on Khaydara in 1990 and Double Bounce in 1995, as well as victory in 2004 on Jonny Ebeneezer.

PJ McDonald also has two wins in the race and he's on board King's Lynn - perhaps he can jump above Frankie if Andrew Balding's charge puts his best foot forward at 3.15pm. As would Billy Garritty were he and Strike Red to do so again.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

The Easterby family have been worth following. Peter won it twice with Polly’s Brother and with Cumbrian Waltzer in 1991 while son Tim saddled Bollin Joanne to take the prize in 1996 after he had taken over the licence at their Habton Grange Stables. Tim’s uncle Mick Easterby also scored with Benzoe in 1993. This afternoon neither Easterby is represented.

Based across town, David O'Meara has won three of the last nine runnings, in 2016 with Intisaab and in 2019 & 2020 with Gulliver Toyotomi & Dark Cloud Rising run for him today.

The 2017 & 2018 winner, Kevin Ryan, has an impressive three entered this year in the shape of Hammer The Hammer, Bergerac & Sergeant Wilko. The 2022 & 24 winner, Strike Red, once again represents Richard Fahey. He is joined by Uncle Don and Loom.

To be fair, a Yorkshire trained victor is a statistical probability today as more than half of the runners are trained in the White Rose County

BETTING

Favourites have a rather appalling record in the race, with no winners coming in the last ten years. In fact, eight of the last ten winners have been priced 10/1 or higher so don’t be afraid to look for runners at a bigger price.

AGE

As this race is open to horses aged three-year-olds and upwards, you get quite a varied range of winners. However there is a definite trend around four and five-year-olds, who have accounted for seven of the last ten winners.

OFFICIAL RATINGS

Spinatrix was the highest rated winner since 2001, when successful off an official mark of 105 in 2014. At the other end of the scale, only four recent winners of the race were rated 94 or lower but as the prize money has improved then so does the quality, so lower rated horses are struggling to get into the race 2022 & 2024 winner Red Strike was rated 92 and 93 respectively, but as a rule of thumb it pays to follow 95 or above, as seen with 2023 winner Montassib, who was rated 101.

WEIGHT

Considering that seven of the last ten winners carried 9st 3lb or more to victory, it appears that it is now best to focus on those with higher weights when looking at the Coral Sprint Trophy. Although the 2021, 23 & 24 winners carried 9st 2lb, 9st and 9st again, so maybe we are seeing a shift in the trends.

DRAW

Historically there has been little to suggest any sort of draw bias however in the last ten years, every winner bar one has come from stall nine or lower. In fact you can narrow it down further with six being drawn in five or lower. So pay close attention to those drawn in the single figures. Or consider it is a sprint so results reflect where the pace is found, rather than the draw per se.

TRAINER

David O'Meara has really begun to assert himself over the last 10 years, winning it three times. Kevin Ryan had previously won the race in 2017 & 2018, while Richard Fahey has two wins in the past three years to his name.

CONCLUSION

Statistically, horses toward the front of the market have not performed as well as those at a double figure price. This doesn't bode well for current favourite Binhareer and Northern Ticker. Those carrying less than 9st haven't featured on the roll of honour in the last ten years. It would be a negative for the likes of Sergeant Wilko and Bergerac. Seven of the last ten winners have carried 9st 2lb or more, so pay close attention to horses in that bracket. We can also put a tentative line through the likes of Gleneagle Bay, Commanche Falls, Jordan Electrics and King's Lynn, all of whom have their age to overcome. With all this taken into consideration, EYE OF DUBAI looks to be the one to side with. The four-year-old is likely to go off a double figure price and hails from the Yorkshire based operation of John and Sean Quinn. A consistent sort, he looks the type to do well in this contest.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A highly creditable sixth in the Ayr Gold Cup last time out after narrowly scoring over C&D in August, NORTHERN TICKER has always been highly regarded by connections and he can strike again. Irish raider Gleneagle Bay may not be the easiest to win with, but dropping to 6f for the first time is interesting, while the consistent Binhareer is entitled to be thereabouts again after a respectable sixth in the Ayr Silver Cup most recently Third in this last year off 4lb lower and a recent winner at Ripon, Eye Of Dubai completes the shortlist with Hammer The Hammer

About One Mile (1,600 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m

Race Type: Maiden

Prize Money: £30,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Inside Rail

Next up is a race also limited to 2yo’s however this time the experience is more limited and all are awaiting that first W.

A filly would have started with a lower weight than their male counterparts, however the fairer sex have swerved today’s renewal.

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This race also qualifies under the GBB scheme

The advice is to rely on your choice of the two ‘p’s pedigree or pin!

KNAVESMIRE TIP

With the form of his promising debut second at Kempton last month being well franked since by the winner and third, JOULANY sets a decent standard and is expected to benefit from the extra furlong. Runner-up despite showing plenty of greenness on debut here over 7f last month, Valenday is bound to improve for that effort, as well as Morshdi, who may enjoy better ground after a creditable effort on soft ground at Sandown.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Gibside won this last year but has to carry 7lb more now and arrives out of form, though the return to this class could see him place. Berkshire Sundance was a progressive stayer who finished second in a better race at Kempton last November, but it looks a big ask to win this after 11 months off and MARBUZET gets the nod. A winner at Chester and a short-head second at Ripon last month, he loves a battle and his new mark may not stop him.

We end our year with a farewell handicap, this time 3yo+ horses, back over one and a quarter miles.

“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 85 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar Looking for help? Then follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until we start the 2026 season on Wednesday 13th May. Thank you for your support this year, Happy Christmas.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Noble Horizon was caught after making the running over C&D in a better race last month but if he is given a more measured ride he could go close racing off 2lb lower. Byblos would be interesting if he keeps a straight path after hanging before finishing fifth over further at Southwell and he is another for the shortlist, as is AUSTRIAN THEORY. Dropped two classes after an Ayr second, he races off the same mark now and looked to be returning to form.
