The 3-in-1 PET TRAVEL SYSTEM Maeve™ + Roscoe™ the seat can be attached either to the vehicle base to serve as a protective car seat or seat to the Roscoe stroller for on the go! It also has two different fabric options that can easily be changed out to line the bottom mattress—one that matches the canopy and another cozy sherpa option—along with an attached leash to keep your pet secure if you’re using the stroller with the canopy open. But if you do want to give your pet a little shade, the canopy is also equipped with UPF50 protection and breathable mesh panels. There’s an attachable side impact protection guard that’s included with the seat, too, to provide extra safety in the car.
My Experience with the Maeve Seat and Vehicle Base
As a dog mom, I was a little uncomfortable on the installation so I reached out to their customer service department and they walked me right through it easy. Thankfully, Tavo provided step-by-step instructions that could be accessed via QR code, or reach out to them directly like I did. The base itself is designed with indicators that turn from red to green when the pieces are in the right place, which makes it easy to know it is secured or ready to release.
Another one of the fabulous things about the Roscoe stroller was just how lightweight it is—I can easily lift it up by just the handle. Not to mention, it folds up to a compact size that makes storing it in the back of my bronco easy. Once it’s out, it unfolds so easy and you can lock the wheels in place while you simply set the seat in place until you hear a click that means it’s secure.
While there’s no denying Tavo Pet Protection System is pricey, considering its extremely impressive safety features, along with the functionality of each of the pieces included in the 3-in-1 system, plus the overall aesthetics and thoughtful add-ins to the design, I’d say it’s definitely worth the splurge for pet parents who want to make sure their dogs and cats are safe wherever they go.
Tavo has recently come out with an AIRLINE CARRY-ON PET CAR SEAT Dupree™ and a DUPREE ADAPTER FOR ROSCOE PET STROLLER to make it easy for getting through the airport! It doesn’t get any better than that!
Tavo is a high-end product, but a worthy investment if you spend a lot of time traveling with your pet. The carriers come with a 2-year limited warranty and a 60-day return policy. (Find all of the specifics on the Tavo website.) ... and its way more than just a ...
HIS HERS &
Luke Reinbold

with L.A. Berry, Equinista
To describe what Luke Reinbold offers as “general horsemanship and cow work” is far too modest. In a cosmos full of clinicians, his reputaon precedes him via that vehicle second only in trustworthiness to the horse itself: word-of-mouth. At Horizon Ranch and Equestrian Center, Luke and Tiffany (married since 2003) have learned to “keep the main things a priority – God, family, life together, training horses, raising cale, and helping people.” Based not out West but in western New York, where a living sign of 260 pine trees welcomes you to the Naonal Historic Register village of “CANISTEO,” this cowboy and his Confidence Through Horsemanship lessons come recommended -- from a good place to put down roots for a family and foundaons on nice horses.
HERS: Do you remember your first horse or pony?
HIS: My first was a fiery pony mare named Firestar. I lost her to colic when I was 10 years old. That situation devastated me and I didn’t ride a horse again until I was 21.
HERS: What did Firestar teach you that can still apply today?
HIS: That sometimes you just have to keep at it through the tough time.
HERS: What qualities do you like best in a horse?
HIS: I love that horses never lie. They are the most honest creatures on the planet. They don’t have an agenda. They aren’t looking for power. They don’t play angles and you certainly don’t see horses play politics. Horses are filled with forgiveness and grace. They are a great example of what we, as humans, should strive to be.
HERS: What qualities do you like best in a person?
HIS: Honesty and humility are huge to me. We all put our pants on the same way.
HERS: What was your first job? How old were you?
HIS: My first summer job, age 13, was trimming Christmas trees with hand-pruners. It probably wasn’t technically legal (under child labor laws) but it was great for me and I sure got a nice tan!
HERS: If you had to work outside the horse world, what would you be doing now?
HIS: I had a 12-year career in law enforcement but I left that to work with horses. I always said if not horses
I would train dogs. But anything that allows me to work with people, specifically young people, is what I would probably go to.
HERS: Favorite quote?
HIS: I love quotes! I have so many favorites I don’t think I could pick just one but here are a couple: You will see what you look at and, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
HERS: What led you to your passion for teaching people as well as horses?
HIS: Since I was 18, I have taught in some capacity, beginning with coaching Little League baseball. That began lighting the fire in me to teach. I have taught in law enforcement academies, coached football, you name it – I truly love teaching and will break down anything and try to teach it to anyone that will listen!
HERS: You can spend a day with any horseman and/or horse in history, who is it?
HIS: I would love the chance to ask enough questions of Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt to become annoying to them! And to just watch Secretariat and see if I could learn what made him tick, and to see Hollywood Dunit would be awesome.
HERS: Why is confidence, in our horses and our selves, so important?
HIS: The two go hand-in-hand. However, it does start with us. If we have no plan, we won’t be confident. If we aren’t confident, our horses won’t feel compelled to follow our leadership.
HERS: evolve
HIS: around the healing that make when won’t I’d really a couple

Horses never lie. They are a great example of what we, as humans, should strive to be. “ “
HERS: Where/how would you like to see our horse world evolve in the next decade?
HIS: Wouldn’t it be great if more people could just be around horses? And enjoy them for what they are and all the healing properties they represent? But past that, I wish that horses would be seen for so much more than a tool to make money. Greed makes too many horses dispensable when they become more cost than income source. This won’t happen – because of the reasons mentioned – but I’d really like to see the futurity ages of horses moved back a couple of years.
HERS: You can invite three guests, past or present, real or fictional, to dinner. Who attends and what’s served?
HIS:Jesus Christ Himself, nothing else would matter at that point. The more the better, I sure wouldn’t be eating, at that point I wouldn’t want to miss a thing!

ART ANTIQUES&
By Dr. Lori
Lost & Found in Cleveland PREMIERES
Soon to be an American Holiday Classic
By Dr. Lori Verderame
My invitaon to the VIP premiere of the new Hollywood movie, Lost & Found in Cleveland, came via email from producers Keith Gerchak and Marisa Guterman of DoubleG Films. They asked if I would have a Zoom meeng with them to discuss their film and explain why the story of a bunch of quirky yet hopeful anques collectors from Cleveland is expected to be a holiday classic based on a field with which I am uniquely familiar and have experse. They explained how my work as a skilled (and funny) appraiser of art, anques, and collectibles performing on stage naonwide for nearly three decades makes this film very similar to my own personal story idenfying and appraising objects of all eras, styles, and values.
I excitedly attended the premiere, walked the red carpet, and thoroughly enjoyed watching the film as it debuted at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on November 1. As a professional appraiser who has told America’s stories through objects brought to me by owners from all walks of life and evaluated as many as 20,000 objects a year at Dr. Lori’s Antiques Appraisal Comedy Show, the film immediately hit home. It had everything, it offered hope to the collectors of unusual objects, it had its heartfelt scenes and funny parts, and it showed viewers a slice of Americana through all types of collectibles and personal stories. Just like all of us who have items from years gone by, Lost & Found in Cleveland is a film for all of us. The filmmakers fully understood the universal premise that has been kept by many who preserve cherished keepsakes like grandma’s Limoges porcelain plate or that special bronze Frederic Remington look-alike cowboy sculpture purchased at a neighborhood yard sale. Every object has a story, and each story reflects upon the American experience. It’s part and parcel to what my role in the world of art and antiques appraising has been for many years. And still, I was moved by the movie.
In addition to the well-established filmmakers, the movie features some very big Hollywood names like Martin Sheen, Dennis Haysbert, Stacy Keach, Jeff Hiller, Dot-Marie Jones, Jon Lovitz, Liza Weil, among others. The action moves quickly, and the audience finds itself, as I did, cheering on the quirky collectors throughout the multi-
faceted, complex and charming stories. The characters are well developed. They show heart and determination, love and hope; perfect for family viewing at holiday time. The writing is crisp, smart, and witty. As someone who has had the uplifting and sometimes painful job of appraising family heirlooms and flea market finds where I’ve had to “break some hearts and make some millionaires,” I found the film to be on target in an arena that few know as well as I do. In my years appraising the public’s objects in private homes, on television shows, and on big public stages, Lost & Found in Cleveland demonstrates the aspects of American culture that brings hope and inspiration to the heartland.
The film references classic movies like The Wizard of Oz, A Christmas Story, Best in Show, and It’s a Wonderful Life where hope is at the plot’s center. In this film, Gerchak and Guterman show us the American experience through our keepsakes… everything from alabaster lamps to zebra printed quilts. Looking back on my career of seeing it all, I urge you to see this film. Watch Lost & Found in Cleveland with your family and friends. Tell others about it and you’ll be glad you did. And, a piece of expert advice: Be careful when you lift the lid off grandma’s antique cookie jar. It might be worth something much greater than money.
Ph.D. art and antiques appraiser, YouTube star with 75 million views on her channel www.YouTube.com/DrLoriV , and award-winning media personality, Dr. Lori Verderame presents her popular Antiques Appraisal Comedy Tour nationwide. She appears on Netflix, History channel, and CBS & ABC networks. Want to know what your stuff is worth? Visit www.DrLoriV.com or call (888) 431-1010.

Equine Metabolic Syndrome:
A Broader View of Cause and Care
By Dr. Amy Hayak
It always excites me when Elite Equestrian or any other publicaon highlights Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). It’s a vital topic. But I admit, I get discouraged when I read arcles that start off challenging common assumpons—only to end up reinforcing them with contradictory advice.
But what if we’ve been targeting the wrong system?
The good news? This can be reset.
Increase Speed of Healing
EQUINE PASTERN DERMATITIS
in the Winter
Did your horse’s EPD (Equine Pastern Dermatitis) develop or worsen in July or August? Your veterinarian most likely administered a round of steroids and antibiotics to handle a sudden and horrifying bout of cellulitis if edema was present but you are still wrapping and applying medications/topicals to the sores with no end in sight.
Fighting dermatitis is frustrating any time of the year. The stress and concern endured continues until the dermatitis is resolved.
You are not alone. Many horses develop their worst EPD conditions later in the summer, continuing through the holidays and often into January and February. Even though the most common warm weather EPD “drivers” such as insects are not present, nearly all the other 200 possible causes (drivers) are still present.
Bacteria and fungi continue to exist in the environment. Horses most compromised by immune deficiencies such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome, Cushings, unresolved inflammation from any source in the body, are greater challenges to healing. Protecting your EPD prone horse once healed, will also always be a part of their lifelong care.
Silver Whinnys® are a proven high-tech bandaging and leg protection, utilizing embedded silver on a molecular level intrinsic throughout the yarn. Bio-burden on the contact surface of the socks is severely inhibited from reaching the skin by the antimicrobial action of the silver. Valuable air reaches the skin surface while the moisture-management qualities of the yarn keep skin tissue dry, while protecting legs against dirt, insects and debris.
Fifteen years of empirical evidence submitted by our customers and their horses demonstrate that Silver Whinnys are a proven hygienic barrier against environmental bacteria and fungi. When the cycle of infection and inflammation is interrupted, speed of healing can occur.
Winter presents enough added challenges for your horse. When weighed against the costs of constant vet bills and ineffective topicals, Silver Whinnys® still cost less than a vet call. For years, non-stop, Sox For Horses has offered 20% discount coupons to help people help their horses heal. Silver Whinnys are one of the best tools to have in your barn med chest at all times of the year.
For an effective winter solution to keeping the Silver Whinnys® warm, dry, and comfortable while your horse is healing, check out our foul weather leg gear “Whinny Wellies® on our website. Each is custom made to fit your horse. Whinny Wellies can be ordered “Unlined” for wearing over the Silver Whinnys or “Celiant® Lined” that offer essential warmth and circulation to those horses that suffer from cold weather induced Laminitis, suffer from arthritis, or our beloved seniors simply needing warmth and comfort in the winter. Order early! Our production is swamped from November on.
Silver Whinnys are veterinarian recommended, owner-trainer referred, and horse and donkey approved. Our products are 100% Made in America. We never left.

These are old studies but still gold, still truth. We finally had so many studies we stopped doing them. Empirical evidence took over, people telling us their stories. I have so many to add to our “Studies” page on the website but lack the time to put it all together. Sox helped a horse in Florida heal from a horrifying pigeon fever abscess. She was fitted with a great little custom bandage, and healed beautifully. Sophie:

SmartEquineINTRODUCES
EasyPouches: EasyPouches:
A Simpler, More Accurate, and Sustainable Soluon for Daily Equine Supplementaon New single-use, pre-measured pouches make feeding faster, reduce plasc waste, and offer an opon for every horse and every budget.
SmartEquine™, the #1 Equine Health Brand, today announced the launch of EasyPouches, a convenient, single-supplement soluon that gives horse owners, barn managers, and caretakers a faster, simpler, and more accurate way to provide daily supplements while reducing environmental impact.
Responding to years of feedback from horse owners, caretakers, and trainers, EasyPouches combine SmartEquine’s trusted formulas with a simple “tear and pour” system that eliminates guesswork, mess, and excess plasc. Each box delivers 28 pre-measured, airght pouches - perfectly poroned for daily use - ensuring every horse receives the right product at peak freshness, every me.
“We’re always listening to our customers,” said John Barry, CEO of SmartEquine. “Time is precious at the barn, and equine caretakers want a soluon that’s fast, accurate, and waste conscious. EasyPouches deliver on all fronts: the right amount, the right way, in packaging that’s beer for the planet.”
Convenient, Accurate, and Sustainable
SmartEquine EasyPouches are built for every type of horse owner - whether you’re a competor on the road, a barn manager overseeing a team, or simply streamlining daily feeding at home. The slim pouches stack neatly in recyclable cardboard caddies, replacing bulky containers and buckets. No scooping, no measuring, no second-guessing - just quick, reliable feeding that works for both horse and handler.
Sustainability was a priority from the very start of development. Each EasyPouch is made with 30% postconsumer recycled (PCR) material and uses up to 69% less plasc than tradional buckets. “Horse owners told us they care deeply about reducing environmental impact,” Barry said. “With EasyPouches, we can deliver the same trusted product using a fracon of the plasc and leaving a much smaller footprint.”
Trusted Nutrion, Unchanged Formulas
The inial launch includes 28 of SmartEquine’s best-selling supplements across 10 categories – ranging from joint support to digesve health – delivered in the same proven formulas customers already know and trust. EasyPouches are not replacing SmartEquine’s popular SmartPaks; rather they expand choice, especially for horse owners who rely on single supplements, travel frequently, or coordinate feeding with mulple caretakers.
Each pouch is clearly labeled with the supplement name and feeding instrucons, ensuring easy, accurate use by both owners and barn staff. The compact stackable storage caddies further reduce cluer in tack rooms and feed areas, keeping spaces organized and funconal.
Serving a Diverse Equestrian Community
SmartEquine EasyPouches have been designed with all customers in mind, from compeve riders and professionals managing large facilies to casual owners who simply want peace of mind in their horses’ daily care. For barn managers and those who regularly delegate feeding dues, the color-coded, easyto-use pouches reduce errors, streamline rounes and boost consistency. Customers ordering through SmartEquine’s AutoShip program will also soon receive personalized barn caddies labeled with their horse’s name, making it even easier to ensure the right supplement goes to the right horse.
Pricing and Availability
EasyPouches are available immediately, starng at just $22.95 per month through SmartEquine’s convenient AutoShip program. The line is offered in three disnct ers, designed to meet the unique needs of every horse:
Essenal – Daily support for general health and wellness.
Advanced – Targeted nutrion soluons for horses with moderate workloads or more specialized needs. Ulmate – Premium soluons for horses with intense workloads or highly specialized needs.
Highlights:
Convenient: Tear-and-pour pouches eliminate scooping and measuring errors.
Sustainable: Packaging uses 30% PCR material and reduces plasc by up to 69%.
Trusted: Available across 10 of SmartEquine’s most popular formulas, with no change to ingredients.

Luxury Ranch Riding Vacation
Come Ride Wyoming The Hideout at
Our ranch is all-inclusive, upscale, focused on riding and horsemanship, limited to 25 guests weekly for a 6-night stay, with riding access close to 650,000 acres. Elevations in our backyard range from 4200 to above 13,000 ft, and the area enjoys a seldom seen diversity of scenery, micro-climates, and terrain. The Hideout offers a very personal, small, and intimate Western riding experience, surrounded by a peaceful, calm, exciting and breathtaking environment. Our ranch is more of a riding destination than your typical dude or guest ranch.
Taking a break from horseback riding, you can enjoy non-riding activities such as trap shooting, archery, fly-fishing, a soak in the hot tub, biking, hiking, take a dip in our heated lap pool, or just relax and take in the views. Many take a self-guided driving tour to the nearby dinosaur sites, The Town of Greybull and The Greybull Dinosaur Museum. A visit to Cody and The Buffalo Bill Museum of The West, The Cody Rodeo or exploring the many Western shops in Cody is also on the agenda of many of our guests who do not want to spend continuous time in the saddle. And of course, many of our visitors add extra days to explore Yellowstone and Teton National Park, Jackon-Hole and other exciting places in Northwest Wyoming and Southern Montana.
However, most of our guests ride every day for several hours and join our daily cocktail hour to exchange the experiences of the day with the other travelers. After dinner they enjoy sitting outside taking in the stars in this area with little light pollution, listening to the silence, the voices of nature, and breeding in some of the purest air in the nation. They are totally relaxed and ready to enjoy a good night’s sleep in the well-appointed log cabins. Our new and ever-growing number of repeat guests have found shared experiences and intimate connections with guests and riders from around the world, different walks of life, and all backgrounds.
On the contrary to what a lot of people believe, most of our guests have an English riding background. Travelers come from different origins to stay together at our ranch, creating shared memories and forging new friendships. Riding, dining and spending time together with people they would never encounter in their daily lives at home. We accommodate beginners in good shape, intermediate and advanced riders, which makes this a great active outdoor vacation for mixed groups
to ride The Big Horn Mountains and the wide-open spaces in Wyoming, on one of our quarter horses or gentle mustangs. All well-trained and adapted to riding this challenging terrain. Relax in comfort, take in the views, and enjoy our ranch property with manicured lawns, looking out at our herd of 100 well cared for horses in the pastures. We are in Shell (populaon 84), East of Cody and Yellowstone Naonal Park. Join us
and families. Being surrounded by breathtaking views in all directions. Enjoying horses and nature is about using all senses.

Why The Dynamic Saddles™?
The Dynamic Saddle is engineered to fit in moon, and it does not have any seat pressure points and does not flaen/collapse while under the rider’s weight. In fact, the weight of the rider along with special billet system is what loads and adjusts the saddle to the horse’s anatomy. This simplifies the saddle-fing adventure! There’s no need for narrow or wide trees for most horses, and these saddles do not need to be reflocked. Correct fit is achieved on majority of horses right out of the box!
Dynamic Saddles feature close contact panels, bringing you closer to the horse to improve communicaon and add subtlety to your weight aids. We are free to avoid the bulky panels of other manufacturers because there are no pressure points from the tree that must be heavily padded. This allows our saddles to be ultra light, only 12 pound to handle.
Only the best quality leathers are used in making the saddles. Our experienced team of professionals delivers the highest standard of crasmanship. We are a bouque saddlery, with generaonal saddlers that produce a limited number of saddles to our exacng specificaons. Our customer service is unmatched! Special order saddles are available for truly hard to fit equines and riders.
Every detail of saddle construcon is designed to make the ride enjoyable for both the horses and riders:
• The saddle is designed to posion itself further back on the horse to reach a dynamic equilibrium and give maximum freedom of movement to the shoulders.
• Dynamic Saddles™ front billet system is designed to allow the front panels to move away from pressure of working muscles, allowing the shoulders to swing freely.
• Dynamic Saddles™ allows the rider to loosen the pelvis which makes sing on the horse much easier and helps the rider feel more connected to the horse.
• The flaps and thigh rolls are angled to accommodate the anatomical structures of the human body.
• The srrup bars are posioned to help the rider to achieve correct body alignment.
• If you ever struggled to thread a srrup leather through the srrup bar, you will appreciate that our bars are slightly angled, to allow for easy inseron of srrup leathers. Small details that make a world of difference!
• The overall design provides unmatched security to ride correctly and helps secure a rider in place even when faced with a young horse’s ancs.

A Fabulous Journey!
‘I need to ride now, to explore, to uncover more life; to reach strangers, to feel danger and to learn; to share this old, slow way, with man’s patient, most forgiving and most loyal friend – the horse.
In his mid-twenes, restless in the roune of a city, Louis D. Hall found himself wondering how to create the life he wanted to lead. Inspired by Don Quixote, he decided to fulfil a childhood dream – to make an uncharted journey on horseback.
Aer finding his horse Sasha in Italy’s Apennine Mountains, the pair set off and headed west for Cape Finisterre, ‘the end of the land’, unprepared for most of the dangers – snow, storms, wolves – that faced them. He was even less prepared for the lessons that both Sasha and the young woman who joins them part way taught him about life’s potenal and its complexies.

Trailer Comfort
Story and Photos
By Tom Scheve
A comfortable trailer means a happy horse, and when your horse is happy, you’re happy. Taking a few extra minutes of your time to follow these simple steps to prepare your trailer before your outing can make all the difference
Ventilate. Open the vents and the windows, especially on hot days. Roof vents let hot air escape through the roof, quickly cooling the interior. In colder weather, dual roof vents will suck the stale air from the stall area when opened facing the rear without causing wind on the horses. Facing forward, the vents scoop in more air. The openings on sliding windows with screens and safety bars can be adjusted to regulate the amount of air entering the trailer and to control airflow in the stall area. The opening of each window can vary depending on the weather. See two lower photos at right.
Control Hay and Dust. Even high-quality hay can contaminate the stall environment. To avoid shipping fever, the horse should avoid breathing this dust and should be allowed to lower his head while he is in the trailer so he can cough to remove debris from his respiratory tract. Soaking hay for at least ten minutes, twelve hours before adding it to the hay bags or feed trays in the trailer. will significantly reduce the spores floating around in the trailer. If you soak the hay be aware that wet hay can get moldy if it sits around too long. Immediately dispose of hay that is uneaten. If you choose not to soak the hay, open the hay bale and shake the portion of hay you will use with a hay fork before putting it into the trailer.
Remove urine and Manure Frequently. On long trips, ammonia and other noxious gases from urine and manure can accumulate in the trailer and cause respiratory stress. Bedding only the back of the stalls with shavings to absorb urine (but not so much as to create more dust) will reduce dust. This is especially helpful for those horses who do not like to splash themselves with urine. Since holding urine can be harmful for horses, bedding will encourage them to urinate. Sprinkling the shavings with water will keep the dust under control. Lining the floor with quality 5/6th inch mats to relieve the stress in the horses’ legs will also keep most of the urine and manure on the mats.
Airflow. Keeping the airflow moving in the stall area increases the comfort of the horses and helps control the temperature. Solid head dividers interrupt the airflow in the head area, as do solid center dividers and lower partitions. Having tubular dividers allows air to pass through and continue to circulate. With climate change and increasing temperatures, oscillating fans in the head area and rear of the trailer do an efficient job of moving the air throughout the stall area if the trailer is at a standstill or stuck in heavy traffic.
Remember that a horse is a source of heat. One horse can generate as much heat as a small space heater. Lots of open windows, vents, and fans will keep your horses comfortable in the hot summer months. In the colder months, closed vents and windows will hold the horses’ heat inside the trailer, so regulate the opening of the vents and the windows to let some heat out and reconsider whether they need blankets. See top photo.
Future Now: We, at EquiSpirit, have experimented and tested adding air conditioning to the stall area, resolving the power source by using lithium batteries and solar panels so that the AC can run safely while traveling on short and long trips.
After Level 2 comes more advanced movements for collection needed to successfully complete the requirements of Level 3. ( Read about Level 2 in the July/August and September/October 2025 issues of Elite Equestrian, read it free at www.EliteEquestrainMagazine.com)
Half-Pass —The Half-pass is executable on a diagonal line. The horse should be bent around the riders inside leg and into the direction that he is traveling. The horse’s body is nearly parallel to the long side of the arena with the forehand slightly in advance of the hindquarters. The bend in the half-pass should increase with the steepness of the diagonal track. The horse should maintain the same cadence and balance throughout the whole movement. In order to give more freedom and mobility to the shoulders, it is of great importance that the impulsion be maintained, especially the engagement of the inside hind leg. In the Jog or Lope, the movement is performed in a series of forward/sideways strides with a fluent collected movement on a diagonal line. Fore and hind legs cross balanced and cadence are maintained.
This movement is so fun to ride! Your horse has more bend than in shoulder In, Haunches in, and Renvers (haunches out). The shoulders slightly lead in the movement. Even long lateral steps will get you the highest scores with keeping the same bend and straightness throughout the movement.
Rein Release — This is a clear release of contact while the horse maintains self-carriage, rhythm, tempo, straightness, and quality of gait. The rider lets his hands move forward from the elbow.
I love this task, as it will show if your horse is ridden ‘back to front’ and not leaning on the forehand or having the tendency to get hollow or become inverted. If the reins are released and the horse stays in the same outline, he is truly holding his own self carriage and not dependent on the rider to carry himself. It is a great feeling when you do this and the horse carries himself! You have done your correct homework with collection!
Renvers (Haunches-Out-This is the inverse movement in relation to haunches-in. The hindquarters remain on the track while the forehand is moved inward. To finish
the haunches-out, the forehand is aligned with the hindquarters on the track. The horse is slightly bent around the rider’s inside leg. The horse is bent in the direction in which he is moving. The forehand is displaced to the inside. Balance and cadence are maintained.
Same as the Shoulder In, Renvers, the horse is on 3 tracks and has the same body position as Shoulder In, but the haunches come off the tracks, front legs on the track, keeping the bend of the horse in the direction of the movement.
Pivot (Turn on the Haunches)-The horse pivots on the inside hind leg and steps around it with the outside hind leg. The horse pushes off with the outside hind leg. The pivot leg is allowed to pick up and reset for balance. The horse should maintain correct bend and balance and respond to the rider’s leg. A pivot should begin at a walk tempo, with forward intention, building speed moderately while maintaining form and fluidity. It is not a fault to step forward 1-2 steps into the pivot.
Next, I will share the new requirements and definitions for Level 3. Keep following!

EQUINETherapy
1
It’s a story of how the once rescued horses are now healing the humans on a remote island of Bali.
Not horse therapy – this is horsepower in its purest form.
Susi, can you share what initially drew you to NIHI Sumba and the Equine Intuitive Awareness Retreat? What were you hoping to find or feel during your time there?
I had known about Nihi Sumba as a resort and had followed on social media, and knew about the founders, James McBride and Chris Burch. I was a travel writer and so my curiosity and interest in remote and remarkable places to visit are always alert. Somehow it had crossed my path and I fell in love instantly. I thought of it as a bucket list place to visit one day, as it felt like a dream I could never afford.
Since knowing about the resort I poured over everything they posted and so I learned about Carol Sharpe, the original horse whisperer of Nihi, and her work connecting with horses. This resonated deeply with me, I feel that the horse is my spirit animal, and her work is very spiritual, intuitive and fascinated me. I wanted to learn from her, meet her, connect with those horses and I dreamed of going to the resort one day - seeing them running along the beach and swimming with them in the sea.
I had spent the past two years sorting two house moves and one purchase, moving my elderly mother with me, and I had kept a week of holiday to treat myself and recover once it was all done. Just when I thought I had better book some kind of holiday for myself before it was too late, a post from the resort popped up announcing its new Equine Intuitive Awareness Retreat. I had a very strong sense of purpose, of self, a true desire, and I just knew that this was what I wanted to do and so I took a leap of faith and booked. I never thought it was something I could afford, but somehow everything aligned and I managed to get myself there and take part.
You’ve faced deep personal loss — something no one can truly prepare for. How did this shape your mindset going into the retreat?
When a person has undergone deep personal loss, that is a very deep rooted part of who they are, it has shaped their wiring, thought processes, their choices, relationships etc. it is like trauma which affects your very being. Especially if this happens in your formative years as a child. I lost my father suddenly in a car accident overnight, having gone to bed as a happy go lucky little girl, and when I awoke the bottom had fallen out of my world and I had to almost become an adult overnight in order to face grief and loss. This was in the early 1970s when there had been very little understanding of trauma and how the body and brain deal with this, no studies into mental health and wellbeing. I also suffered greatly through endometriosis which prevented me from being able to have my children, and I had to become childless not through choice. As a result of all this my relationships suffered and I never married. Then my brother also died in a tragic road accident, so it was as if history was repeating itself and his two children were faced with the same loss we both faced and had suffered deeply from. So I was carrying a lot of deep rooted loss and grief.
I have naturally sought help, advice, read a wide variety of books in order to try and understand how to help myself, and the clinical therapy offered just never really touched the sides. I always understood what was being explained, but nothing ever kick-started a real sense of change or development. But it all brought me to a place where I was ready and open to experience what Carol’s expertise could help me with. I had a sense of awareness that there

may be some slight possibility that the horses might help me to heal a bit, but went into it open for anything. I am a very spiritual, emotive, sensitive kind of person and I need to feel and experience things, not just hear or be told.
Everything that had happened to me was part of me, so that was who I was when I went into the retreat. But I was also a very sensitive, intuitive person and mindful and aware of my feelings, emotions and thoughts. I was able to openly communicate this with Carol, which helped me to progress during the sessions. I was open to healing, receiving, aware of the powerful exchange of energy which can take place, and I had only hoped that this might happen for me - but I didn’t raise any expectations. I wanted to go into the retreat to learn, be open, aware, with a huge sense of adventure.
At our welcome dinner with the group on the retreat, we all talked about how we got there, what drew us to take part, and I shared that I wanted to learn about connecting with horses as I too would like to facilitate healing with horses and nature. Since my experience on the Nihi retreat with Carol, I am now on a path to do just that.
You’ve said that no therapist has ever been able to help, but something shifted during a session with Carol Sharpe and the herd. Can you take us through what happened? Leading on from what I have said above, working with Carol delved much deeper into the psyche and intuition - but purely through exercises in working with the horses. It is
very hard to put down on paper, but Carol is very intuitive and can read the horses’ non verbal communication as well as reading the humans, asking the right questions and guiding us to get the most out of the experience. When you work one to one with a horse, on the ground in the arena, not riding, the aim is to communicate in a non verbal way. You have to remain calm, form a connection and then work with the horse, communicating what you want the horse to do, such as approach you, stop, move left or right around the ring. Simple exercises, but in doing so, the horses read our own energy, breathing and heart rate, and act accordingly. They mirror what we are thinking or how we are being. It is essential to be authentic, as horses can read when we are not and then won’t bother with us - for example, I worked with a horse which was the dominant male in the herd, and first of all it became instantly obvious that I wasn’t setting any boundaries or being clear. Carol could see this and explained it to me, so we had to begin again and work on me setting some boundaries. This worked, we communicated and he was reading my non verbal commands well, until suddenly he lost interest. This meant that I had communicated something to him that I was resisting an putting up a barrier - in all, this was like a mirror to me about how I am in my relationships with men. Harsh but true, and I had never in all my decades of life had such a clear and obvious insight about myself than what happened right there in half an hour with the lovely Sumba horse, Covo. This in itself set me on a path of unlocking deep rooted anxieties, fears, feelings of not being good enough, and most of all not being

wanted, noticed or loved. Carol’s wisdom, insight, intuition and awareness nurtured me in just a few words, a few moments of her time, and I learned a great deal about myself. We progressed over the five days, working on more deep rooted knots and blockages.
One of the most powerful moments you experienced involved Ina, an orphaned pony. What was it like to sit quietly among the herd, and how did your interaction with her unfold?
At Nihi Oka, the spa area located a short drive away from the main part of the resort, is where some of the horses are being nurtured. They may be orphaned, recovering or needing calm. On the spa day of the retreat the them was that we were deserving and worthy, so we were to allow ourselves to be pampered. The agenda was a sumptuous and fun brunch at the beach, literally at ‘the edge of wildness’, followed by some time with the herd at Nihi Oka, to experience reiki and try energy connection with the herd under the shade of the tall palms. This time was a period of calm, reflection, rest and digestion before our long pamper session with a variety of treatments off the menu. I the arena we were each given a small camping like chair to be able to sit calmly and silently among the horses or under the palms in the shade. Carol told us about each horse, and we formed a large semicircle around one female which was breathing heavily, in order to give our love to her. We learned about the exchange of energy, vibrations and the flow of warmth which can resonate between people, animals and withing the universe - an explanation of reiki - and we silently wished this horse well. Carol guided us to take up a spot anywhere we felt, within the arena, once we were ready. We were guided to feel blessed and
worthy of the beautiful surroundings, to feel the warmth and contemplate in the calm of the surroundings. If we felt like it, we could direct our thoughts and love towards any of the horses, and it might be that one of them would approach us.
I never could have imagined what was to happen. I had learned that Ina was an orphan, raised by hand by the Nihi staff, nurtured and loved after her mother sadly died. Apparently she was doing really well, fitting in and seemed to be well and strong. When i heard this my heart swelled and I just wanted to pour out love to her. So when the time came, I quietly moved a bit nearer and sat thinking about this lovely young horse without her mother, in the hope that she might come nearer. Carol saw and guided me to move closer into the four horses gathered in a shady spot. So I calmly did just that and sat with my sunhat on until I felt Ina approaching me and resting her head on mine. So I removed my hat carefully and looked up at her. I felt such a rush of warmth and love, from me to her, from her to me, given back, I had never felt anything like this. And it is the hardest thing to put into words. She nuzzled my face with hers and I felt held, hugged, blessed, loved... We remained like this for some time. And I said to her in my thoughts, ‘I know we both feel a bit broken, through our loss, but we’re alright really, aren’t we?’ It was as if my sense of loss had been lifted. filled with love and blessings. I felt such a rush of light, love & warmth - and then suddenly I had a very clear bright vision of myself holding the baby I never had. It was so vivid and real for me that all I could do was love Ina for enabling me to have this experience. I still get goose bumps talking about it, and I can take myself right back there when I need to, a retreat when I want to imagine my happy place, for example now during meditation or reiki or sound healing.
Susi Cheshire, enjoying a relaxing moment.
