Home to some of the world’s most recognisable birds and animals, Africa’s epic landscapes are synonymous with wildlife. This continent offers truly unforgettable wildlife encounters, be it on the grassy savannahs or the baked earth of the desert, riding in an open-top jeep following dusty tracks, or moving slowly along game trails on foot, is an adventure of a lifetime.
Majestic mountain gorillas live deep in the forest-cloaked mountains of Uganda as family groups. Visiting them is not only the greatest wildlife encounter of earth, according to Sir David Attenborough, but also the cost of your permit to trek to see them directly contributes to their conservation.
Inhabiting inhospitable lakes and wetlands across the African continent, iconic, pink-feathered flamingos stand in the highly alkaline waters on their spindly legs eating algae and brine shrimp with their jug-like bills. Find them with us in Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana.
A ticklist of Africa’s most iconic game animals, the so-called Big 5 are lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros and African buffalo. There are many national parks in southern or East Africa where you can spot them all while on safari; with us you can find them in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
The fastest land animal, the elusive and graceful cheetah offers one of the most thrilling hunting displays on the savannah, astonishing with their speed and agility. You can search for them with us on tours in Kenya, Tanzania and Namibia.
A primate unique to Madagascar, there are around 112 species of lemur living amongst the spectacular landscapes of this Indian Ocean island. Ranging from 30-gram mouse lemurs to the nine-kilogram indri, many species of lemur are endangered due to the destruction of their native habitats.
In one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles, every year millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles migrate, followed by an assortment of predators, between Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve and Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, following the rain in search of water and fresh grasslands.
Africa’s waterways are full of incredible creatures, best discovered on river safaris – you’ll find these on our tours in Botswana and Zimbabwe. You’ll most likely see hippos keeping cool, submerged in rivers, lakes and wetlands, while crocodiles bask languidly in the sun on remote riverbanks.

Breakfasts are usually a mix of local specialities and familiar favourites from home. For lunch and dinner, you’ll often be sampling regional cuisine, dining where the locals do. We also include a select number of special ‘feature meals’, giving you the chance to savour the signature dishes of the region, while the rest of the time you’ll enjoy a delicious variety of the destination’s best food.
Q. Do you allow children on your tours?
A. We allow children 12 years and over on group tours. Alternatively, our Private Tours (see our website) offer greater flexibility whilst on tour and are suitable for any age group.
Q. Will I be travelling with passengers from other countries?
A. Our groups are generally made up of travellers from the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Occasionally we are joined by English speaking passengers from other countries.
Q. What is the average age on your group tours?
A. The average age range is 40-65. Younger and older passengers travel with us too.
Q. What hours of the day do your tours operate?
A. They generally start at about 8am and end shortly after your evening meal. Wildlife viewings or game drives are often at dawn and / or dusk, to maximise your chances of sightings.
Q. How do standards abroad compare with the UK?
A. We will do our best to ensure that your holiday is safe and trouble free and we are continually working with our local partners to maintain and improve health and safety standards. Travelling abroad involves new places and new experiences and sometimes this means different safety and hygiene standards to those we are used to in the UK. We therefore ask that you take care; pay attention at all times and use your common sense. You are also requested to refer to notices and follow advice from your National Escort or local guide.
Q. How does the tipping system work on your tours?
A. Tipping is expected most parts of the world. However this can often lead to awkwardness in knowing when it is appropriate to tip and how much, as well as ensuring you have a suitable amount of change available at the time. For your convenience, and based on many years of experience, Wendy Wu Tours operates a kitty system on our group tours, so your National Escort will collect a tips kitty at the start of the tour and look after this aspect of your trip for you. It also ensures that the amounts paid are reasonable for you but still fair for the local people. The amount is stated on each group tour page (and will be advised again in your final documents).
Any additional tipping on any of our tours is welcomed at your discretion. Please feel free to tip restaurant staff, porters, or river guides if they performed a special service for you. For tours with fewer than 10 passengers, tipping will be slightly higher than stated on the group tour pages. On Private tours and extensions, we will advise recommended amounts.
The specific amounts for tipping contributions will be outlined in your final documentation.
Your health, safety and well-being on holiday are of paramount importance to us. Wendy Wu Tours is a fully insured and bonded tour operator with comprehensive public liability cover. Working closely with an independent health and safety organisation, our local partners carry out health and safety checks on accommodation, transport and excursions; and works with our destination partners and suppliers towards improving health and safety standards throughout the regions in which we operate. All travellers should be aware that safety standards vary across the different regions we visit and may not match the standards we enjoy in the UK. In the unlikely event of a problem or emergency on tour, Wendy Wu Tours has a Crisis Management process in place to support all of our customers. We also have a dedicated 24 hour emergency support number.
For the last 25 years we’ve been taking groups of travellers to unique and spectacular places, and know full well how impactful, inspiring and horizon-broadening exploring the world can be. Over the years we have been building as many mutually beneficial, sustainable and responsible relationships as possible in the destinations that we visit, so they too are able to thrive.
We believe travel should positively benefit the communities we visit. That’s why we prioritise locally-owned restaurants, hotels, and experiences that support local businesses and create sustainable livelihoods.
When traveling with us, you help empower local artisans, entrepreneurs, guides, drivers and so many others, ensuring that tourism leaves a positive, lasting impact.
We are committed to fostering meaningful, authentic, and respectful interactions with the communities we visit. Our tours are designed to celebrate local traditions, honour cultural heritage, and support experiences led by local experts. We encourage travellers to engage with an open mind, follow local customs, and contribute to the preservation of cultural identity in a responsible way.
We are reducing our environmental impact by building more rail journeys into our itineraries, and promoting low-season travel. Trains offer a greener alternative to flying, lowering carbon emissions while providing a more immersive travel experience. By promoting more departures in the low season, we also help ease pressure on popular destinations, support local economies year-round, and create a more sustainable way to explore the world.
We believe responsible travel starts with awareness. That’s why we provide our travellers with practical tips on reducing their environmental impact and supporting communities in a meaningful way. Through pre-departure resources and on-tour guidance, we empower our travellers to make informed, sustainable choices that help protect the destinations we visit for future generations.
Many of our customers enjoy the Wendy Wu Tours experience so much that they travel with us again and again and are happy to recommend us to their friends and family.
