WELCOME TO ANOTHER NEW HARRY!

As a family business, we have had one important goal since our inception on Vlieland: to make our guests feel at home with us. Whether you are staying with us for one night or your entire vacation, we want you to walk in and think: yes, this is the place. That warm feeling, the smile of an employee, the bed that is just right, the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the restaurant – it's the details that make a place special. Our origins lie on a Wadden Island, and that isolated location has played a major role in shaping our DNA. Self-reliance, homeliness, and adapting to your surroundings. You can see all of that reflected in our hotels. Almost imperceptibly.

In any case, it has led to all our hotels being different, and that is determined by the location of the hotel. Each of our hotels is unique. There are theme hotels such as the Fashion Hotel, our beach hotel Seeduyn on Vlieland, the ss Rotterdam, but also a Hotel Jakarta. Each hotel

has its own unique atmosphere but is based on the same principles. Feel at home with us. That feeling is largely determined by our wonderful staff, but of course the building and its interior also play a major role. We have certain principles for the interior, which you will notice almost imperceptibly everywhere. However, the interior of each hotel is determined individually. No two are the same. And that is quite a lot of work. Not only with new construction, but we are actually always renovating or remodeling somewhere in our hotels. We have our own interior design department for this purpose. That is another consequence of our island origins. Self-reliant, we like to do everything ourselves.

In this issue of HARRY!, we pay tribute to interior design. The place where you will feel at home, both with us and in your own home. Enjoy reading!

Warm regards,

The Westers family and staff

5 QUESTIONSFOR

SHE IS KNOWN FOR HER LOVE OF COLOR, HER ABILITY TO BRING TOGETHER DIVERSE STYLES, AND ABOVE ALL FOR GIVING INTERIORS A TRULY PERSONAL CHARACTER: INTERIOR DESIGNER ROOS REEDIJK. IN ADDITION TO HER WORK ON A VARIETY OF PROJECTS AT HOME AND ABROAD, SHE REGULARLY APPEARS ON TELEVISION, WHERE SHE INSPIRES VIEWERS WITH HER CREATIVE IDEAS AND PRACTICAL TIPS. IN THIS INTERVIEW, ROOS TALKS ABOUT HER VISION, SOURCES OF INSPIRATION, AND CURRENT TRENDS.

interior designer Roos Reedijk

1. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE AS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

'That's a difficult question, because I don't have one fixed signature style. I'm more of a chameleon. Of course, I have my own taste, and people often know me for my use of color. But for me, it's never about one style or one recognizable signature. I always try to find a balance. Color can be beautiful, for example, but often combine it with a calm base or a classic or vintage undertone. It's precisely that tension that makes an interior interesting. The most important thing is that a house becomes a place where people really feel at home. I'm not there to impose my own taste. You don't live in a house that Roos likes – you live surrounded by things

that you like. That's why I always look at the wishes of the residents, their taste, but also at the house itself. A new-build home simply requires different choices than a classic mansion or bungalow. The architectural style must match the interior design. I do notice that people who really don't like color are less likely to come to me. And that's fine, because then I'm working against myself. But for me, color doesn't automatically mean bright pink walls or bright shades everywhere. Color can also be found in details: in art, in textiles, in accessories. It can be subtle or bold. The important thing is that it adds something to the personality of a home. For me, an interior must always be alive – it should never be a showroom where you're afraid to touch anything.’

Photography Kristel van Herpt

2. WHAT IS YOUR GOLDEN TIP FOR GIVING A HOME MORE ATMOSPHERE AND PERSONALITY?

‘Always start with what you already have, and especially with what has meaning for you. An heirloom from your grandmother, a find from a flea market, a work of art you fell in love with, or a souvenir from a special trip. Those kinds of pieces tell a story. They make a home unique and make you happy when you look at them. The biggest pitfall is thinking too much in terms of “picture-perfect” showrooms. Of course, those houses are beautiful and everything is just right. But they often lack life. You need to be able to move around in your home, things need to be used. A sofa should be comfortable, a cupboard should be practical. And above all, your surroundings should make you happy. Dare to postpone your choices. You don't have to buy everything at once. Save up for that one special item, reupholster a piece of furniture, or paint a cabinet so that it suits you again. Even on a small budget, you can do a lot: go to markets, check out thrift stores, and be creative. By collecting things, you slowly build an interior with a story. And that's what makes a house cozy.’

3. WHAT IS YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF AN INTERIOR THAT MADE AN IMPRESSION ON YOU?

'I immediately think of my uncle. He moved frequently and always redecorated his homes. He was very maximalist and

brought the most unusual furniture and objects home with him. His homes were experiences: colour, patterns, wallpaper and art everywhere. Even the ceilings were sometimes painted with high-gloss paint. It was the opposite of boring, and I loved it. He taught me that your interior can be exciting and playful. But besides my uncle, hotels have always been a huge source of inspiration. Especially in cities like Paris and London, you see that hotels can do so much more. Rich carpets, deep colors, prints on prints. Everything is just right, down to the smallest details. A desk, a stair runner, a table leg – everything has been thought through. I love that. can walk around and take pictures everywhere. And I often think: why don't people dare to do at home what hotels have been doing for years? A bedroom, for example: with a beautiful duvet cover, a few pillows, warm lighting, and color on the walls, you can create a hotel feeling without it having to be enormously expensive.’

4. WHICH TRENDS ARE YOU EMBRACING THIS YEAR AND WHICH ARE YOU LEAVING BEHIND?

‘I am very happy that we have moved away from sleek Scandinavian minimalism. We can have more again! More color, more patterns, more classic influences. I'm seeing decorative moldings in kitchens again, round shapes, and what's known as color drenching: walls and ceilings in

‘TO ME, AN INTERIOR MUST ALWAYS BE FULL OF LIFE’

one color. You also see that suppliers are daring again: wallpaper, rich fabrics, bold colors. It can all be bolder and more personal. What appeals to me less are trends that become too uniform. Black steel doors, for example. Don't get me wrong: I still think they're beautiful and practical, but they've been adopted so widely that they've become predictable. Why always black? You can also have steel doors in other colors, combine them with wood, or opt for round shapes. The same goes for herringbone floors: dare to try a different laying pattern or material. Interiors only become interesting when people dare to make their own choices.’

5. IF YOU HAD FREE REIN TO REDESIGN AN ICONIC SPACE, WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE?

‘I would choose a boat. I think it would be fantastic to transform an iconic ship into a kind of boutique boat. Everything would be custom-made, from the furniture to the bedding and tableware. Yachts are often a bit kitsch, but I would opt for an elegant, classic look. Think of the grandeur of the Orient Express, but on the water. A space where every detail is just right, where luxury and customization come together. That would be a dream project for me.’

DRIFT X WESTCORD COLLECTION

With our hotels on the Wadden Islands, we are committed to keeping the beaches clean. That’s why we are especially proud of this unique collaboration with Drift. Anne-May Nijman from Drift collected plastic on Vlieland’s beach – among other times during the joint beach clean-up with Strandhotel Seeduyn – and

transformed it into a unique collection of sunglasses. The sunglasses are now available at our hotels on Vlieland and Terschelling. Even better, if you’re staying with us: grab a special beach bag on your way to the shore, collect plastic, and you might just contribute to the next collection.

The most beautiful view of Terschelling is now even cosier from the terrace of Hotel Schylge. With new seating and lounge areas, atmospheric lighting, soft outdoor rugs, and hanging chairs, this is the spot to enjoy the island.

SAIL AMSTERDAM

During SAIL Amsterdam, Hotel Jakarta was at the very heart of the festivities. Our team worked tirelessly to make this unique event unforgettable. From the bustling terrace and lively Skybar Malabar to the warm atmosphere in Café Jakarta, a festive energy was everywhere. Westers Bakery and the Lounge were also buzzing with visitors, with lines of enthusiastic guests. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us – and to our amazing team, whose enthusiasm made this event truly unforgettable.

JEU DE BOULES

The terrace at WestCord ApartHotel Boschrijck now features a brand-new pétanque court! Stop by for a Terschellinger pizza and throw a few balls while you wait, or make it an active get-together with friends or family.

TOP 1% WORLDWIDE

We are very proud: The Market Hotel Groningen officially belongs to the top 1% of hotels worldwide on Tripadvisor. For the third year in a row, we received the Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Award, one of the highest honor there is. What makes this award extra special is that it’s not decided by a jury, but by you, our guests, who continue to share their appreciation with us. We are deeply grateful. Together with our team, we dedicate ourselves every day to offering you a warm welcome and true Groningen hospitality!

THE GRONINGEN 4DAYS

This past summer, the very first Groningen Four-Day March took place, and what a success it was! The Market Hotel Groningen was a proud partner and sponsor. What made it unique was that both the start and finish took place daily at the Grote Markt, right in front of the hotel. Guests enjoyed front-row views, quite literally. With special Four Days packages and a lively atmosphere, the atmosphere was incredible. The first edition left us wanting more: the Groningen Four Days will become an annual event, and we look forward to welcoming the participants again!

ROFFA

Together with ROFFA, Hotel New York is now not only located at the Kop van Zuid but also shines on the back of shirts worn in Rotterdam and far beyond. ROFFA is known for shirts featuring typical city icons such as the Erasmus Bridge, De Kuip, and the Euromast – and of course, our hotel belongs among them! You can shop yours for €49.95 in our kiosk or simply via the webshop.

Looking for a special venue for a large gathering in Delft? The expo space at Hotel Arsenaal is the place to host large-scale events, such as corporate meetings, networking receptions, weddings, parties, presentations, or lectures. With its flexible layout, modern facilities, and the historic atmosphere of the centuries-old Arsenaal, this unique space offers everything needed for an inspiring event.

POUR YOUR OWN WATER AND HELP SOMEONE ELSE!

From now on, you can easily pour fresh, filtered water at our Made Blue Foundation water tap in the lobby of WestCord Hotel Eindhoven. Not only good for you, but also for the world: for every guest, the hotel donates 20 liters of clean drinking water. Thanks to our collaboration with the Made Blue Foundation, someone else in the world will have enough water for a whole day. More than 700 million people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water. Together, we can help change that.

GATHER AT THE EXPO AMSTERDAM 750 YEARS

Step aboard the ss Rotterdam and travel straight back to the 1950s. This former flagship of the Holland America Line was once the largest passenger ship ever built in the Netherlands – and it shows. Everything breathes the atmosphere of post-war luxury and stylish design. Much of the original interior has been preserved, showcasing the attention to design and craftsmanship of that era. The impressive art collection on board completes the picture. During the Art Tour, held every last Sunday of the month, guides take you past works by, among others, Wally Elenbaas, Bram Roth, Geurt Brinkgreve, and William Akkermans.

On Saturday, the 21st of June, Amsterdam Fashion Week transformed the A10 Ring into a 75-meter-long catwalk for a one-time open-air show celebrating Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary. WestCord Fashion Hotel was once again a partner of Amsterdam Fashion Week, supporting the event by providing catering for both guests and crew. In doing so, the hotel contributed to Amsterdam’s development as a global fashion capital. It was a unique event where fashion, the city, and celebration came together perfectly!

WestCord's

BEST

AT WESTCORD, WE ONLY EMPLOY THE BEST. THEIR DRIVE AND PASSION FOR SURPRISING GUESTS ARE ADMIRABLE, AND WE WOULD LIKE TO PUT TWO OF THEM IN THE SPOTLIGHT: DAVID FRANCOIS AND INEZ EGGEBEEN. DAVID IS FACILITY MANAGER AT THE MARKET HOTEL IN GRONINGEN AND INEZ RECENTLY JOINED THE WESTCORD FAMILY AS INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT COORDINATOR. TOGETHER, THEY ARE FULLY INVOLVED IN THE RENOVATION OF THE WESTCORD HOTEL IN EINDHOVEN. IN THIS INTERVIEW, THEY NOT ONLY TALK ABOUT THIS PROJECT, BUT WE ALSO GET TO KNOW THEM BOTH A LITTLE BETTER.

INEZ EGGEBEEN

Project Coordinator Interior Design

HOW DID YOU START YOUR CAREER AT WESTCORD?

‘I joined WestCord Hotels in March of this year, starting in my current role as Project Coordinator Interior Design.’

WHAT EXACTLY DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL?

‘As Interior Design Project Coordinator at WestCord Hotels, I coordinate interior design projects from concept to completion, including communication, planning, budgeting, implementation, quality control and supplier management. The projects vary from room renovations to the restyling of public areas such as lobbies, restaurants and meeting rooms. Every day is different. Before the summer holidays, I worked full-time in Eindhoven for a few weeks because of the hotel renovation. Last week, I spent a day in Eindhoven, had an appointment at the ss Rotterdam, visited a supplier's showroom and continued working at our office in Amsterdam, where suppliers visit, consultations take place with colleagues from the design department and meetings with the family are held. Next week, my week will look completely different again. The variety of locations, working with many different colleagues and suppliers, and the Westers family make it a particularly enjoyable job.’

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOUR WORK IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

‘Coordination, contacts and variety.’

WHAT IS A SPECIAL PROJECT FOR YOU?

‘I haven't been working here long, so not a specific

project really stands out. However, I enjoy working on all projects for WestCord Hotels with great enthusiasm.’

THIS EDITION WE FOCUS ON INTERIOR DESIGN. WHAT ROLE DOES INTERIOR DESIGN PLAY IN YOUR DAILY LIFE?

‘Before started at WestCord, I worked for industrial designer Marcel Wanders for seventeen years, as a project coordinator and, before that, as a project manager in construction. I have always been surrounded by interior design and design, and you automatically take that with you into your private life. now have a timeless interior at home, in which make well-considered changes when I come across something new.’

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL INTERIOR STYLE?

‘Eclectic, with old and new designer furniture, lighting and art objects. Big gestures, no knick-knacks. Atmospheric and tidy. Natural oak, glass, steel, white walls, green marmoleum flooring, large plants, warm fabrics and bright colours.’

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS MOST IMPORTANT IN AN INTERIOR?

‘To feel at home.’

DO YOU HAVE A GOLDEN TIP FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO CREATE THEIR OWN INTERIOR DESIGN?

‘Take a good look around you at what you like and make it your own by mixing ideas and styles.’

DAVID FRANCOIS

Facility Manager The Market Hotel

HOW DID YOU START YOUR CAREER AT WESTCORD?

‘I studied International Hospitality Management at NHL Stenden. In the final year of this program, you complete a ten-month internship at a company in the hospitality sector. At the time, The Market Hotel was still under construction, and since lived just around the corner, I spontaneously walked in during a recruitment day. After a positive interview, I was hired as the very first intern of the hotel. Originally, I was supposed to start on July 1st in the newly opened hotel, but due to the pandemic and other delays, the opening was postponed. My internship therefore became a pre-opening internship, where I helped with all preparations. The hotel finally opened on May 1st, 2021, just after I completed my internship. Luckily, I was able to stay! I started as a department head of a small team responsible for cleaning public areas and staff facilities. Later, the dishwashing department was added to my responsibilities. In the years that followed, I merged these two departments into one facilities team.’

WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INVOLVE?

‘At The Market Hotel, the facilities department is, in short, responsible for everything guests don’t see. This includes cleaning the public areas, keeping staff areas tidy such as the canteen and offices, washing and ironing staff uniforms, and sometimes assisting the technical department. Our goal is to support the rest of the staff in the same way they support our guests.’

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOUR WORK

IN THREE WORDS, WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

‘Dynamic, surprising, and challenging.’

WHAT HAS BEEN A SPECIAL PROJECT FOR YOU?

‘Right now, my work at WestCord Eindhoven is in the spotlight. Over the past nine months, I stayed in Eindhoven three to six nights a week and worked closely with everyone involved. I always felt incredibly welcome, which shows that within our chain we are truly colleagues – not just within each individual hotel. It’s amazing to see how a bare concrete room slowly transforms into a fully finished hotel room during such a project.’

THE THEME OF THIS EDITION IS INTERIOR DESIGN. HOW IMPORTANT IS THE INTERIOR FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE AS A FACILITY MANAGER?

‘From a facilities perspective, it’s mainly about maintaining the interior so that it still looks the same years later as it did in the promotional pictures from the opening week. In a way, you help the architect preserve their design. For me, it’s essential to know which materials have been used, how to clean them when housekeeping staff can’t, and how to repair them if they break.’

WHAT ARE YOUR BEST TIPS FOR CREATING OR MAINTAINING AN INTERIOR?

‘Always keep some spare materials in stock – or at least know where you can order them.’

FROM MILITARY TO BOUTIQUE HOTEL ARSENAL

FOR CENTURIES, THE ARSENAAL IN DELFT WAS A PLACE STEEPED IN HISTORY – FROM WEAPONS DEPOT TO ARMY MUSEUM. NOW, THE BUILDING EXUDES LUXURY AND HOSPITALITY AS A BOUTIQUE HOTEL. THE TRANSFORMATION WAS A PRECISION JOB: AS A NATIONAL MONUMENT AND PROTECTED CITYSCAPE, EVERY CHARACTERISTIC ELEMENT HAD TO BE PRESERVED. THE IMPOSING

BEAMED CEILING, THE ROBUST BRICK WALLS, AND ORIGINAL WINDOW FRAMES NOW FORM THE FOUNDATION OF THE NEW INTERIOR.

The WestCord Hotels design team opted for a mix of classic charm and contemporary comfort. Authentic details were retained and complemented with warm materials, modern design, and smart mood lighting. For example, paneling with indirect lighting was added to the ground floor, subtly highlighting the brick walls. In the corridors leading to the rooms, you see brick walls and beamed ceilings combined with sleek, modern wooden walls covering the hotel room modules – a powerful contrast between old and new.

THE MAIN PRINCIPLES:

Preserving historical elements such as beamed ceilings, brick walls, and original window frames.

Warm, rich materials to add softness and comfort to the monumental spaces.

Contemporary design in furniture and lighting for a fresh, luxurious look.

Atmospheric details such as paneling with indirect lighting to accentuate the brickwork.

Contrast in the corridors: authentic brickwork and beams versus sleek wooden modules.

Each room is uniquely decorated, so no two rooms are the same.

WHAT IF YOUR BED FELT LIKE COMING HOME?

LET'S BE HONEST. ULTIMATELY, WHAT MATTERS MOST IN A HOTEL IS THE BED YOU SLEEP IN. AND THAT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT TO US. AT WESTCORD, WE BELIEVE THAT A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP STARTS WITH ATTENTION. ATTENTION TO DETAIL. ATTENTION TO SLEEP. ATTENTION TO DOING THINGS RIGHT. THAT'S WHY WE TEAMED UP WITH AVEK – A FRISIAN FAMILY BUSINESS THAT HAS BEEN MAKING BEDS SINCE 1927 – TO DEVELOP A BED THAT EMBODIES EXACTLY THAT: PEACE, COMFORT, AND QUALITY FROM OUR OWN SOIL.

Avek has been rooted in Surhuisterveen, Friesland, since 1927, where Pake Roelf started the company from his manufacturing shop. The demand for bed bases for box beds gave rise to the idea of making beds themselves – the beginning of Avek. Today, the third generation, cousins Roelf Jan and Roelf Gezinus, run the company with the same dedication as their grandfather.

Avek stands for Labor, Diligence, and Quality. That motto is still upheld within the organization. All beds are custom-made by people who know their craft. WestCord Hotels and Avek share a number of values: attention to detail, craftsmanship, and genuine hospitality. In addition, the choice for a custom-made bed of Dutch manufacture was a natural step.

A UNIQUE WESTCORD BED

This bed has been specially developed for hotel guests and is sturdier than a standard consumer bed, with extra legs for optimal stability. An integrated spiral base provides extra ventilation and an open structure. On top of that is an extra thick topper for a luxurious and comfortable lying experience. All in all, this ensures excellent ventilation, long-lasting sleeping comfort, and a fresh, energetic start to the day.

WESTCORD SIGNATURE BED:

• 5-zone pocket springs with 6-turn, thermally hardened springs (13 cm)

• Extra thick topper for a luxurious lying sensation

• Integrated spiral base for optimal ventilation

• Extra legs for maximum stability

• Open, breathable materials for a fresh sleeping climate

WHERE CUSTOM FLOORS TELL STORIES

BY MAUT SUPPLIES WALL AND FLOOR COVERINGS THAT COMPLETE A SPACE. FOR WESTCORD HOTELS, THE TEAM TRANSLATED INTERIOR DESIGNS INTO CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS THAT COMBINE STYLE, COMFORT, AND FUNCTIONALITY.

In hotel interiors, custom wall-to-wall carpeting is much more than just floor covering. It brings warmth and comfort and ties the design together into a harmonious whole. ‘If a design from our by MAUT collection doesn't match perfectly in terms of color, we adjust it in consultation with the client,’ says founder Mirjam Klunder. ‘With our background as textile engineers, we always advise on the right quality. After all, a rug in a hotel room requires different qualities than a carpet in the hallway.’

the interior design and the architect's ideas into a suitable design,’ says Mirjam. In Hotel Arsenaal, this resulted in corridors with wall-to-wall carpeting in a colour gradient: dark sand in the middle, transitioning to greyish beige at the edges. These shades are continued in the 25 cm high carpet skirting boards.

Custom rugs with abstract patterns, made from the glossy Soof yarn, were used in hotel rooms and restaurants at Hotel Arsenaal, Eindhoven, Groningen, and on the ss Rotterdam. ‘The glossy yarn adds depth and luxury, and brings the design to life in changing light,’ says Mirjam.

Lano was chosen for the corridors of Hotel Arsenaal and The Market Hotel Groningen: durable, comfortable, and ideal for intensive use. In Hotel Arsenaal, this carpet was given an extra acoustic backing, which reduces contact noise and increases walking comfort. By MAUT is known for its unique use of color and distinctive patterns, inspired by art, architecture, nature, and travel. ‘It's always about the design telling a story that fits the location and the hotel experience.’

A carpet must be visually appealing, but also durable and functional. In hotels, carpets are subject to intensive use, dirt, and stains. ‘In busy areas, we often avoid light colors. We add extra texture for liveliness and to camouflage stains. Sometimes we opt for carpet tiles instead of wallto-wall carpeting, because individual tiles are easy to replace.’

SPENDING THE NIGHT ON OUR OWN CREATIONS

‘I have already spent the night at WestCord Hotel Eindhoven and The Market Hotel in Groningen,’ says Mirjam. ‘Hotel Arsenaal in Delft is still on my wishlist. The high ceilings, wooden trusses, and rich history really appeal to me. It's special to sleep in a room with our floor rugs and walk through corridors on our custom carpet with color gradients. For me, the end result of such a project is the ultimate reward.’ bymaut.com

HEJ!

WELCOME TO

WESTCORD HOTEL DELFT

THE MOMENT YOU STEP INTO OUR HOTEL, YOU’LL FEEL IT RIGHT AWAY: THIS IS NOT JUST ANY HOTEL. WESTCORD HOTEL DELFT IS THE RESULT OF A UNIQUE COLLABORATION WITH OUR NEIGHBOURS… IKEA! THE ENTIRE INTERIOR WAS DESIGNED BY IKEA’S OWN DESIGNERS, WITH PLAYFUL NODS TO THE WORLD-FAMOUS DELFT BLUE. THE RESULT? A HOTEL WHERE SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN MEETS DUTCH COSINESS.

Where you would normally stroll through an IKEA store thinking, I’d love my living room to look like this, at our hotel you can actually experience it. The lobby invites you in with comfortable armchairs and sofas that almost make you want to kick off your shoes. In the rooms, you’ll find clever storage solutions, light colors, and natural materials that radiate calm and space. It’s Scandinavian simplicity with a warm twist, just the way IKEA has become famous around the world. Even the meeting rooms and restaurant are styled this way. Hold meetings at tables that are not only practical but also stylish, or enjoy dinner in a restaurant where design and coziness go hand in hand.

PERFECTLY LOCATED

Another big plus: the location! WestCord Hotel Delft is right off the A13, between Rotterdam and The Hague, and just around the corner from the historic center of Delft. Perfect for a city trip, but also ideal for business travelers. Did you know you can also escape into nature within minutes? The Delftse Hout recreational area is just around the corner, perfect for a morning walk, a jog, or a relaxing afternoon by the water.

Did you know...

• the very first IKEA design center outside Sweden opened in Delft?

• IKEA once released a blue FRAKTA bag in Delft Blue style?

• IKEA product names are often inspired by children’s names, everyday Swedish words, and Swedish place names? This simple system was created because founder Ingvar Kamprad was dyslexic.

• IKEA is an acronym for the initials of founder Ingvar Kamprad, the farm where he grew up (Elmtaryd), and the village where it was located (Agunnaryd) in Sweden?

• IKEA sells more than 1 billion meatballs every year? (Yes, really!)

• a Billy bookcase is sold every ten seconds?

THIS IS HOW WE DO IT

the WestCord W(ay)!

INTERIOR DESIGN IS THE CENTRAL THEME OF THIS EDITION. JUST AS IN OUR HOTELS, THE WAY WE DECORATE OUR HOMES PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN CREATING ATMOSPHERE AND EXPERIENCE. WE ASKED FIVE COLLEAGUES ABOUT THEIR FAVORITE INTERIOR ITEMS AT HOME. FROM STRIKING EYE-CATCHERS TO ESSENTIALS THAT SIMPLY CAN’T BE MISSED: EACH PIECE ADDS THAT EXTRA TOUCH OF CHARACTER TO THEIR HOMES.

HANDE ÖGÜN

‘This little side table from Taller B is one of my favorite design items at home. The black part is made of recycled plastic, and the main structure is birch plywood. I love that reused plastic is given a new life as a sustainable product with a beautiful design. It can be used as a chair, footstool, or side table, both indoors and outdoors. At the moment, it serves as a side table for the plants. It’s also a special object to me because it’s quite unique and traveled with me in pieces all the way from Uruguay in my suitcase.’

VINCENT WALSTRA

‘Every now and then, my girlfriend treats herself to a beautiful design piece. The Stoff Nagel candleholder had been on her wish list for some time, and now she finally bought it. She’s becoming more conscious about choosing items that really add something to our interior, and what she loves most is that she can expand and play around with it. Plus, such a design classic looks just as good next to an IKEA vase as it does alongside other design pieces.’

ETHIEN DUY PHAM

‘My favorite interior item is my marble fireplace. I have a weakness for marble because of its luxurious, timeless, and stylish look, as well as its unique veining. What makes it even more special is that I designed and sketched it myself. It fits perfectly with my interior and feels like a personal statement in my home.’

FLEUR VAN DE KERKHOF

‘My favorite interior item at home is our Scandinavian dining table. It’s a large oval-shaped table with a striking wooden pattern on the wide legs. For me, this table symbolizes hospitality. love inviting friends and family over for drinks or dinner, and the table always needs to have enough space to gather, catch up, and enjoy good food and drinks together. With flowers, candles, and beautiful tableware, it’s the coziest spot in the house for me!’

WHEN FASHION MEETS INTERIOR!

FASHION AND INTERIOR DESIGN ARE NO LONGER SEPARATE WORLDS. WHAT YOU SEE ON THE RUNWAY, YOU CAN NOW JUST AS EASILY BRING INTO YOUR LIVING ROOM. THIS SEASON, THREE STRIKING FASHION TRENDS SET THE TONE: GREEN, TEDDY, AND ANIMAL PRINT. EACH OF THESE STYLES BRINGS ITS OWN CHARACTER, FROM CALM AND LUXURIOUS TO WARM AND BOLD, AND TOGETHER THEY CREATE THE PERFECT FOUNDATION TO GIVE YOUR HOME THAT EXTRA FASHION-FORWARD TOUCH. DISCOVER HOW TO TRANSLATE THESE TRENDS STYLISHLY INTO YOUR OWN SPACE AND CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT’S AS ON-TREND AS YOUR WARDROBE.

COMFORT MEETS COUTURE WITH TEDDY

The teddy trend proves that comfort and couture are a perfect match. On the runway, we see oversized teddy coats and accessories, while at home this translates into plush armchairs, cozy cushions, and even teddy sofas that beg for a lounge moment. Perfect for the darker days! Stick to neutral shades like cream, beige, or sand to keep teddy chic and avoid it becoming too playful. The texture instantly adds warmth and an inviting atmosphere to your space. Pair teddy with clean lines and glossy accents, such as a glass coffee table or brass lamp, to keep the balance between cozy and sophisticated.

This season, green is the it-color. Not only in your wardrobe but also in your home. From rich emerald sofas to subtle sage accents on the wall, green brings serenity, luxury, and a touch of nature indoors. Think green velvet chairs paired with golden details and marble side tables. Green works beautifully in layers: combine lighter tones like pistachio with deeper moss greens for extra depth. Best of all, green blends effortlessly with natural materials such as wood and linen, making your interior feel both chic and warm.

ANIMAL PRINT AS A SUBTLE STATEMENT

Animal print remains a classic. Just as iconic in your interior as in your wardrobe. Leopard, zebra, or snakeskin add personality and punch without overwhelming the space. The secret? Moderation. Start small with items like a cushion, pouf, or throw in animal print, and pair them with calm base colors like black, cream, or cognac. For the bold, a large zebra rug or a statement artwork in leopard motif makes for a true eye-catcher. Mix prints with luxurious fabrics like velvet, leather, or silk, and your home will exude a cosmopolitan vibe that breathes fashion.

COSY WINTER WEEKEND ON THE WADDEN ISLANDS

MOST PEOPLE KNOW THE WADDEN ISLANDS FROM SUMMER: ENDLESS BEACH DAYS, CYCLING THROUGH THE DUNES AND LONG EVENINGS ON THE TERRACE. BUT ANYONE WHO THINKS THE ISLANDS ARE SILENT DURING THE WINTER IS MISTAKEN. IN AUTUMN AND WINTER, VLIELAND AND TERSCHELLING REVEAL A VERY DIFFERENT SIDE: COSY, CHARMING AND FULL OF ATMOSPHERE.

Did you know that you can see plenty of seals around Vlieland and Terschelling even in winter? On sandbanks such as De Richel (near Vlieland) and around the Boschplaat (near Terschelling), large groups of common and grey seals can often be found resting. Boat trips run from the harbours all year round, bringing you at a respectful distance past these special spots. In winter the islands are quieter, meaning you’ll often see even more seals gathered together.

MUSEUMS, ART & CULTURE

BEACH WALKS & DUNE TRAILS

A winter trip to the Wadden Islands simply isn’t complete without a walk along the beach or through the dunes. Wrap up warm, put on sturdy shoes and set off along deserted shores or sandy paths through the dunes. The vast beaches of Vlieland and Terschelling are often almost empty at this time of year. On Vlieland, for example, you can walk into the dunes from the Vuurboetsduin, with views over the sea and forest. Terschelling offers countless walking routes, such as those around the Boschplaat, where you can not only experience nature at its best but, with a bit of luck, also spot birds and seals.

On Vlieland you’ll find Museum Tromp’s Huys, located in a historic commander’s home dating back to 1575. Here you can dive into the island’s history, from old nautical charts to unique works of art. Also worth a visit are the rotating exhibitions by local artists, often inspired by island life and nature. On Terschelling, don’t miss the Wrakkenmuseum in Formerum. This treasure trove holds finds from more than 150 shipwrecks that sank around the island, a true adventurer’s delight!

WINTER CHEER

In December, the villages of Vlieland and Terschelling come alive with festive Christmas and winter markets. Picture twinkling lights, fire pits, stalls full of treats and local goods, music and a warm island atmosphere. From the Winter Market in Oost-Vlieland to the Midwinter Market in Midsland, it’s the perfect way to get into the festive spirit.

STARGAZING

Only a few places in the Netherlands are as dark as the Wadden Islands. Far from city lights, the evening sky unfolds into a blanket of twinkling stars. In winter, when the air is often crisp and clear, you can even see the Milky Way with the naked eye on Vlieland and Terschelling. A highlight is the Boschplaat on Terschelling, officially recognised as a Dark Sky Park, where the night truly feels untouched. On Vlieland too, especially around the Vliehors, you’ll find yourself under a starry sky that feels almost unreal.

NEW YEAR’S DIP ON VLIELAND

Fancy starting the new year with a refreshing plunge into the North Sea? You can! The Vlieland New Year’s Dip on January 1st, held at Strandhotel Seeduyn, is a tradition for both islanders and visitors.

WARMING UP IN WELLNESS

And the best part? After a long winter walk in the cold, you can completely unwind in saunas, steam baths or whirlpools. Strandhotel Seeduyn offers all the wellness facilities you need, perfect for a moment of pure relaxation.

CULINARY WADDEN WEEKS

From 18 October to 2 November, Vlieland and Terschelling celebrate local food during the Culinary Wadden Weeks. Restaurants use products sourced from the islands, from freshly caught fish to locally brewed beer. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover the flavours of the Wadden. WestCord Strandhotel Seeduyn and WestCord Hotel Schylge are also proud participants!

LANTERN WALK

On 29 December, one of Terschelling’s most enchanting traditions takes place in Oosterend: the Lantern Walk. This evening stroll leads you along paths beautifully lit with candles and torches. As you wander through the streets, you’ll enjoy music, warm drinks and a unique Christmas spirit that fills this small village with big festive charm. A magical experience for young and old alike.

THE HOTEL BAR

Design, cosiness and the first impression that counts

YOU KNOW HOW IT IS. YOU CHECK INTO YOUR HOTEL, YOUR SUITCASE STILL BESIDE YOU. BUT YOU CAN ALREADY HEAR THE BUZZ IN THE DISTANCE, THE CLINKING OF GLASSES, AND OUT OF THE CORNER OF YOUR EYE YOU SPOT THE HOTEL BAR. IT LOOKS COSY! THIS IS WHERE YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR FIRST DRINK – WHETHER THAT'S AN ESPRESSO, A COCKTAIL, OR A GLASS OF WATER.

A good hotel bar is more than just beautiful design – it's the place where a hotel comes alive. At least, that's what we think. It's where hotel guests mingle with locals, where stories are born, and where you forget for a moment that just a few hours ago you were sitting in a car, taxi, or airplane. For us, the bar is the beating heart of the hotel. Without a bar, there's no soul, and without soul, there's no atmosphere.

The power of the hotel bar

At WestCord, we don't see the hotel bar as an extra, but as an essential part of our guest experience. Why?

The feeling when you walk in

When you check in and the bar is buzzing, you feel it immediately: this hotel is alive. That energy makes us happy, and our guests too.

The atmosphere barometer of your hotel

Is the bar empty? Then everything feels empty. Is it full and buzzing? Then you want to be part of it.

Hotel guests and locals

Our bars are not closed-off hotel zones.

A good hotel bar attracts not only hotel guests, but also locals. That creates energy – and credibility.

‘WHEN WE DESIGNED THE MARKET HOTEL, WE KNEW ONE THING FOR SURE: THE BAR HAD TO BE THE HEART OF THE PLACE’

General Manager Niek Strous about the bar at The Market Hotel: ‘When we designed The Market Hotel, we knew one thing for sure: the bar had to be the heart of the place. You see it as soon as you walk in – that's no coincidence. We chose to place the bar in the middle of the space. From an operational point of view, that's not always the easiest location because you have to deal with routing, supply, disposal, and overview. We've noticed that guests often have a drink after checking in, before going upstairs or heading into town. So being welcomed by the bar as soon as you walk in was important to us. It brings liveliness to the entire restaurant and lobby. And that's exactly what we wanted: a lively entrance.’

120 grams butter

120 grams granulated sugar

2 eggs (M)

5 grams vanilla paste or essence

60 grams gluten-free flour

60 grams almond flour

4 grams baking powder

2 grams salt

30 ml milk

2. Add the eggs one at a time, adding the next one only when the previous one has been completely incorporated.

3. Then add the milk and vanilla paste.

4. Finally, add the gluten-free flour, almond flour, baking powder, and salt.

6. Pour the batter into a 26 cm springform pan lined with parchment paper (or greased and dusted with flour).

7. Bake the cake for 25-30 minutes at 175 °C (top and bottom heat) until done and golden brown.

8. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

9. Meanwhile, clean the springform pan to finish the cheesecake.

10. Place the cooled cake base back into the springform pan lined with baking paper, and continue with the filling.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE BLUEBERRY

QUARK FILLING:

256 grams low-fat quark

256 grams unsweetened whipping cream

14 grams gelatin sheets

150 grams blueberry puree

1. Whip the cream with sugar until thick and set aside in the refrigerator.

2. Soak the gelatin in a bowl of cold water for at least 5 minutes and squeeze it out well.

3. Heat the puree to 50°C and add the squeezed gelatin leaves.

4. Beat the quark and add the blueberry puree.

5. Then add the whipped cream and mix briefly.

6. Pour the quark filling into the springform pan and let the cake set in the refrigerator.

7. Once the cake has set, make the jelly to finish the cake.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE CASSIS JELLY LAYER:

50 ml water

100 grams cassis puree

40 grams granulated sugar

6 grams gelatin sheets

PREPARATION METHOD:

1. Soak the gelatin in a bowl of cold water for at least 5 minutes.

3. Once the mixture begins to boil, turn off the heat.

PINOT WITH SOUL SPÄTBURGUNDER FROM THE MARKGRÄFLERLAND

IN SCHLATT NEAR BAD KROZINGEN, MARTIN WASSMER SHOWS HOW TRADITION AND TERROIR COME TOGETHER IN A SPÄTBURGUNDER THAT COMBINES ELEGANCE AND CHARACTER.

The Markgräflerland, located between the Rhine and the Black Forest, is a region of rolling hills, vineyards, and small villages. The name goes back to the margraves of Baden, but the greatest legacy is viticulture, which began in Roman times. Thanks to the mild climate and calcareous soils, grapes thrive here. Although the region is known for Gutedel, Spätburgunder – the German Pinot Noir – is now considered its crown jewel.

his winery in the 1990s, with the ambition of producing Spätburgunders that could rival those of Burgundy. He works with low yields, manual harvesting, and aging in barriques, always with respect for the terroir. The result: wines that combine finesse, excitement, and elegance. Critics now rank him among the best in Germany.

One of his calling cards is the Spätburgunder Markgräflerland. This wine is ruby red in the glass, with aromas of berries, cherries, and subtle spices, complemented by vanilla or smoke. On the palate, it is lively and refined, with juicy fruit, fresh acidity, soft tannins, and a mineral finish. The balance comes from the ripeness of the southern location and the tension of the cool nights.

This wine is very versatile at the table: it pairs well with veal schnitzel, trout, coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon, mushroom risotto, or cheeses such as Brie and Comté. The key word is subtlety: dishes that support its finesse.

Schlatt reflects the soul of this landscape: narrow streets, half-timbered houses, and a horizon full of vineyards. It was here that Martin Waßmer established

The Spätburgunder Markgräflerland is more than just a wine; it tells the story of a region steeped in history, a village that cherishes its traditions, and a winemaker who has translated his passion into international class.
