Crafting for Good, a non-profit craft thrift store located in North Chili, has reached a donation milestone of more than $100,000 since 2021. The shop is volunteer-run and donation-based. The store’s profits are donated to organizations that provide food and clean water to those in need. Those organizations include: Foodlink, Dig Deep, World Central Kitchen, Ugandan Water Project, and Water for South Sudan—volunteers from Crafting for Good meet quarterly to designate where to give.

Crafting for Good is the brainchild of Sheryl Byers. She had a vision to repurpose extra craft materials, keeping them out of the landfill, and to use the profits to provide much-needed food and clean water to those who needed them. She started the non-profit organization in 2017 in a

room at the First Congregational Church in Churchville. In 2021, she was able to move to a larger, more accessible location in North Chili at the Towne Super Plaza. Donations of craft supplies pour into the shop every week. Shoppers can find yarn and needlework supplies, patterns, fabric, notions, card-making supplies, books, jewelry-making supplies,
more at deeply discounted prices.

David Lawlor, 83, passed away on October 11, 2025, in Brockport, New York. Born on April 13, 1942, in Nunda, New York, he lived a life marked by service, intellect, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

David’s early years were shaped in western New York, where he attended Aquinas High School. He went on to pursue higher education at St. Bonaventure University before earning his law degree from the University at Buffalo School of Law. His academic journey laid the foundation for a distinguished legal career that began in a small law firm in Brockport. With dedication and integrity, David rose through the ranks to become a workers’ compensation judge – a role in which he served with fairness and compassion.

Before embarking on his legal career, David served his country in Vietnam as a captain in the United States Army. His military service was a point of quiet pride and reflected his lifelong commitment to duty and justice.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, David was known for his sharp intellect and quick wit. Those who knew him appreciated his thoughtful conversations and dry humor. He had an insatiable curiosity that fueled his love of reading and photography. Whether hiking wooded trails, canoeing along peaceful waterways, or casting a line into still waters while fishing, David found solace and joy in nature.

David is survived by his beloved wife, Joan; his siblings Patricia Lawlor; Mary Knowles (Jack); Michelle Rath; Thomas Lawlor (Peggy); Kathleen Robertson (Max); Ruth Conrad (Robert); and Grace Lawlor (David Stettner). He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Lawlor and Ruth Niederhofer Lawlor.

A man of quiet strength and enduring values, David left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on not only through family but also through the many lives he touched during his years of public service.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Home Instead for their diligent care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s name to support the restoration of the Morgan Manning House in Brockport – an effort that reflects his appreciation for history and community preservation. Calling hours will be held on October 18, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Fowler Funeral Home 340 West Avenue, Brockport, NY. There will be a Celebration of Life immediately following.

Kendall Elementary School fifth-grade students were on hand on October 5 to welcome home veterans from Honor Flight Mission 92. Brockport celebrates Walk to School Day 2025

Brockport’s 20th Annual Walk to School Day was celebrated on a beautiful, sunny October 1 morning. Five hundred forty-three students from pre-K to 12th grade celebrated the fun and health benefits of walking to school with friends, classmates, and parents.

Barclay School once again took home the honor of having the highest percentage of walkers at 48% and will retain the coveted Walk to School trophy. The winner of the Oliver Middle School competition is the 6th-grade class, with 12% of the class walking. Their class will be engraved on the Walk to School plaque exhibited in the school.

New this year is an ice cream party, donated by Wegmans, for the classroom with the highest percentage of walkers in each elementary school. At Hill School, the winning class is Ms. Wilson’s, with 48% of her students walking; at Barclay School, the winner is Ms. Macdonald’s class, with 59% of her students walking; and at Ginther School, the winner is Ms. Morgan’s class, with 60% of her students walking. Congratulations!!

What makes this annual event so special is the community involvement: Brockport Central School administration, students, and PTSA; service groups such as Brockport Kiwanis Club and Harsch-Crisp-Seaman American Legion Post 379; businesses such as Tim Horton’s, Wegmans, Bill Gray’s, Our Village Optician, and The Strand Theatre; local farms (Kalir, Robb, and Kirby); health facilities and programs (Oak Orchard Health and Strong West), SUNY Brockport (baseball, softball, women’s basketball, and flag football teams); and the Brockport police department. Thank you all! Finally, we would love to have you join our committee. Give us a call.

Spirits shared their stories during annual Ghost Walk in Spencerport

This year’s Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk was held on Friday, October 10, and Saturday, October 11, with sold out performances both evenings. The weather was cool and clear for the community to walk around the village and hear historical and spooky tales. The efforts of many contributed to make the event a success – greeters, guides, actors, Brian and Amanda Dudley for allowing a story on their packet boat Owasco, Studio 19 Dance Company dancers, Russ Young and his hearse, servers, the Ogden Special Police, and Joel Humphrey for coming up with most of the Ghost Walk stories. The Spencerport Depot and Trolley Museum, and Hunt Real Estate ERA also lent their support to the event. Refreshments were donated by Brockport Wegmans and Spencerport Tops. The Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk is held annually as a fundraiser for the Ogden Historical Society. Provided Information and photos

Monroe County invests $1.3 million in new Hazmat Response Vehicle

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello joined the Monroe County Fire Bureau, WM, and Sunnking on October 9 to announce a $1.3 million investment in a state-of-the-art Hazardous Materials Response Vehicle. The new vehicle will significantly enhance county-wide emergency response efforts, including incidents involving fires, chemical spills, explosions, and lithium-ion battery hazards.

“The safety of our community is, and will always remain, my top priority. This new Hazmat vehicle gives our first responders the advanced tools they need to quickly contain dangerous situations, like fires caused by lithium-ion batteries,” said County Executive Bello. “And as it is Fire Prevention Week, I want to remind everyone that prevention starts at home. I strongly encourage residents to use our free Lithium-Ion Battery Disposal Program at the ecopark to safely dispose of lithium-Ion batteries and reduce the risk of devastating fires. I want to thank my partners in the

County Legislature for their commitment to public safety, as well as Sunnking and WM for standing with us to protect our community and our environment.”

“It is our responsibility to ensure first responders have the necessary resources to meet any hazard head on. The county’s new Hazmat Response Vehicle will strengthen our ability to respond swiftly and efficiently to threats to the community, ranging from spills of toxic chemicals to dangerous lithium-ion battery explosions,” said Chairman of the Public Safety Committee Dave Long.

In addition to this investment, Monroe County is reaffirming its Lithium-Ion Battery Disposal Program at the Monroe County/WM ecopark. In partnership with Sunnking, residents can safely dispose of damaged and old lithium-ion batteries for free with no appointment needed.

Lithium-ion batteries — found in cell phones, laptops, power tools, tablets, and vapes/e- cigarettes — can pose fire

and explosion risks when improperly discarded or damaged. Since the disposal program began in September 2023, ecopark has collected 3.5 tons of lithium-ion and lithium-based batteries for proper and responsible disposal.

“We are proud of our long-standing partnership with the county and WM in offering residents free, safe battery disposal at the Monroe County/WM ecopark,” said Adam Shine, President of Sunnking Sustainable Solutions.“ Batteries can be inherently dangerous if not handled properly. It’s imperative that consumers and the local business community keep these batteries out of landfills and away from facilities that aren’t equipped to manage them safely. We’re grateful to be part of a solution that prioritizes environmental responsibility and public safety.”

An Unbillievable! dedication ceremony – over 50 years past due

Filmmakers honor Buffalo Bills AFL Champions with plaque

Filmmaker and lifelong Buffalo Bills fan Scott Rubin will fulfill a lifelong dream by honoring the 1964-65 AFL Champion Buffalo Bills with a bronze plaque dedication at the historic “Rockpile” gates. The event celebrates the extraordinary legacy of the Bills’ first champions and coincides with the national release of Rubin and co-director J. Garrett Vorreuter’s new indie comedy, Unbillievable! The Movie, arriving on Amazon and major streaming platforms on October 24, 2025.

The plaque will be mounted at the surviving entrance pillars of War Memorial Stadium — affectionately remembered as the Rockpile — which today stand as part of the Johnnie B. Wiley Pavilion (1100 Jefferson Avenue, Buffalo), a vital community center on Buffalo’s East Side. The unveiling will be held at 5 p.m. on October 24. Community members can watch a free screening of the film at 7 p.m., following an introduction by Bills’ alumni.

that can go wrong does. Filmed in Buffalo, the story captures the spirit of Bills fandom while honoring the champions who inspired it.

Afterward, everyone will hear candid reflections from Bills’ legends about overcoming racial tensions of the 1960s, forging unbreakable bonds as teammates, and shaping Buffalo’s proud football history.

The plaque recognizes not only the Bills’ back-to-back championships, but also their historic defensive record — 17 consecutive games without allowing a rushing touchdown — and their solidarity in standing for racial justice.

In January 1965, Bills’ stars Cookie Gilcrest, George “Butch” Byrd, and Jack Kemp joined Black and white teammates in boycotting the AFL All-Star Game in New Orleans after Black players were subjected to racism. Their united action forced the league to relocate the game, marking one of the earliest and most powerful demonstrations of athlete solidarity in professional sports.

“These players were more than champions — they were pioneers of courage and unity,” Rubin said. “To finally give them a permanent tribute at the Rockpile is a dream fulfilled.”

Unlike today’s pros, the Bills of the 1960s lived side by side with their fans — working in local businesses, selling insurance, and playing catch with neighborhood kids.

“They were gods on the field but neighbors in real life,” Rubin recalled. “For us, seeing Ernie Warlick toss a football in the street was as epic as meeting Hercules.”

The teams also featured future leaders beyond the gridiron:

•Jack Kemp — U.S. Congressman and Vice Presidential candidate

•Ed Rutkowski — Erie County Executive

•Pete Gogolak — pro football’s first soccer-style kicker

•Paul Maguire — sportscaster

•Booker Edgerson — community leader

•George “Butch” Byrd — Pro Bowl cornerback

•Ernie Warlick — All-Star boycott leader.

Unbillievable! The Movie is a homegrown indie comedy about three generations of Bills fans gathering for the biggest game in Buffalo sports history — where everything that can go wrong does. Filmed in Buffalo, the story captures the spirit of Bills fandom while honoring the champions who inspired it. The movie is a tribute to the original East Side community roots of the Buffalo Bills.

Auction of a Lifetime - Two Residential Development Opportunities in South Florida! Don’t

Filmmaker Scott Rubin, the longest-serving editor in National Lampoon history, returned to his hometown of Buffalo to tell this uniquely Buffalo story, Unbillievable! Along with co-director J. Garrett Vorreuter, they bridge Buffalo’s past, present, and its enduring championship dreams.

The Saints have clinched the division title this season. Provided photo.

Area boys soccer teams among the best

Churchville-Chili, Kendall, Brockport, and Byron-Bergen are state-ranked and, as of October 7, the Saints, Blue Devils, Spencerport, and Hilton took up the first four spots in the Section V Class AA standings as area boys soccer teams continue to do well this year.

Kendall, 14-0-0, was ranked fourth in the New York State Sportswriters rankings in Class C2. The Eagles have outscored their opponents 56-4 as senior Pablo Rosario-Reyes stood third in all of Section V with 54 points on 17 goals and 20 assists. Classmate Brandon Barrett was tied for 20th with 34 points, senior Jonathan Esposito had 30 points, and junior Brenden Eichas added seven goals with 10 assists. Goalkeeper Jonathan Conte stood fourth in Section V with a .31 goals against average.

Churchville-Chili was ranked seventh in the state in Class AA as of October 4 with a 9-0-1 record and added two more wins this past week to stand at 11-0-1 and clinch the division title. Through 12 games, they were outscoring their opponents 43-3.

The Saints use team speed up front and on the backline and are getting offensive contributions from multiple sources, led by junior Lucas Cariola with 11 goals and eight assists—the first Saint to break the ten-goal barrier since 2018. Senior midfielder Chris Keller had eight goals (including the double-overtime game-winner against Spencerport last week) and seven assists, senior Braeden Naujokas had eight goals with four assists, and junior Bryce Wolf added 17 points.

“We have scored 43 goals and given up three, but most games (in Sectionals) aren’t going to be four or five nothing, but we have the quality to finish this year, and I think that’s the big difference,” Saints head coach John Maloney said.

“We start nine seniors and seven of them were in the Section final two years ago, so they seem pretty calm and don’t seem fazed.”

Senior goalkeeper Mason Simmons broke the program’s career record for shutouts (previously 19) with 28 and counting. He also holds the record for shutouts in a season with 11 last season, though he already has nine this year, so that could change.

As of this writing, he stood third in all of Section V in goals against at .24 per game.

“I think we knew since last year; we had a lot of juniors on that team, so a lot of returning seniors, and we knew we had a lot of talent on the team,” Simmons said. “We’ve been really good defensively, and offensively, we’ve been able to find the net on a lot of teams. A lot of credit to our defense.”

Seniors Trevor Caldwell, Ryan Vujanovic, Isaac Bailey, and Kyler Thomas make up the back four for the Saints most minutes.

Division foe Brockport was in second place at 9-4-0 and ranked 18th among Class AA schools in New York State. They were 5-1 in one-goal games.

Senior Cash Rosado and freshman Andrew Phillips were tied for the team lead with eight goals each, while juniors Ryan Camman, Aiden Fitzpatrick, and Drew Nichols chipped in four, three, and two goals, respectively, with Camman leading the squad with eight assists.

And Byron-Bergen was ranked 18th in Class C in New York State and in second place in Section V behind East Rochester in Class C1 with a 10-3-0 record heading into the final week of the regular season.

Senior Colin Rea led the way offensively with 11 goals and 11 assists, with junior Cody Carlson scoring eight times. Senior Bing Zuber added five goals, with sophomores Mason Farmer and Xavier Vargas each with four tallies, and seniors Jadiel Amaro and Cole DiQuattro combining for six more for the Bees.

The regular season concludes on October 17, with the Section V playoffs commencing on October 21.

Kendall all-time leaders honored

With two early assists in a match on October 9, Sophia Picardo (left photo) became the all-time assist leader in Kendall girls soccer history.

Brooke Rodas (right photo) played her final regular-season game for the Eagles on October 15. Entering the night, Brooke had 306 saves and 28 shutouts, both leading career totals for Kendall girls soccer.

Space documentary now showing at RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium

A second golden age of space has quietly dawned on us, with new hope for humanity as a spacefaring species. Space: The New Frontier, a new documentary made for IMAX and Giant Screen theaters, ventures behind the scenes of some of the most promising space technologies and missions of our time, giving audiences a first look into the not-so-distant future.

Space: The New Frontier is now showing at the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium. In the quest to make human spaceflight accessible and affordable for ordinary citizens within a decade, leading innovators, entrepreneurs, engineers, and daredevils have begun racing towards the unknown. From self-assembling habitats, commercial space stations, and launching rockets without fuel to build the Lunar Gateway to deep space, history is in the making as we speak.

“You will rarely find yourself so immersed in the human need to explore outer space than in this Giant Screen experience,” shared Jim Bader, Strasenburgh Planetarium Director. Filmed in 8K and shown in full-dome format, accompanied by an award-winning score, there’s nothing like being in the front seat to witness a massive-scale launch of Artemis I.

This film makes science fiction feel like a tangible reality, with a familiar narrator, none other than Chris Pine, Star Trek’s Captain Kirk. “I remember seeing these shows [in] IMAX when I was a kid, so to be a part of it is a real blessing, and I can’t wait to inspire kids,” says Pine.

Also among the film’s stars are real-life astronaut Victor Glover and space architect Ariel Ekblaw. Glover will become the first Black man to fly around the moon, while piloting only the second crewed flight to the Moon since the Apollo missions more than 50 years ago. MIT alum Ekblaw is co-founder and CEO of Aurelia Institute, a nonprofit space architecture R&D lab, education and outreach center, and policy hub dedicated to building humanity’s future in space.
