WINDS R MATTERS
OCTOBER 2025
KEEP WINDSOR STREETS CLEAN THIS FALL
With autumn in full swing and leaves beginning to fall around Windsor’s neighborhoods, the Town of Windsor’s Streets team is reminding residents about ongoing street sweeping operations and how they can help keep streets clean, safe and accessible.
The town operates one mechanical sweeper and one air-operated vacuum sweeper year-round to maintain clear streets and protect storm drains from excess debris. Windsor is divided into 20 sweeping districts, each scheduled for sweeping four times a year. During fall leaf season, sweeping becomes more frequent, with Old Town
Keep trash cans, vehicles and sports equipment out of the street, and keep tree branches and brush trimmed back to allow the sweeper to clean the gutter area.
Keep storm drains clear. Never rake or blow leaves into storm drains. It can create unhealthy local waterway conditions and cause flooding.
Windsor and neighborhoods with mature trees often swept several times a week to keep pace with seasonal demand.
Residents can support these efforts by ensuring that sweepers have clear access to the streets. This means keeping trash cans, vehicles and other obstructions out of the roadway. Per Windsor Municipal Code Sec. 7-2-30, it is illegal to place trash, branches or debris in the street, as well as to blow or rake grass clippings and leaves into the street. Leaves that fall into a resident’s yard are the property owner's responsibility to pick up.
Street sweepers also need at least 14 ft. of vertical clearance along the curb line from low-hanging tree branches to pick up leaves and debris. Residents are asked to ensure that their tree branches and small brush are trimmed so the sweeper can access the curb line.
By working together, residents and town staff can keep Windsor’s streets free of debris, protect stormwater systems and maintain the community’s charm throughout the fall season.
Plan ahead when fertilizing. Only apply the amount of fertilizer that is recommended and don’t apply when the ground is frozen or the grass has gone dormant.
Dispose of leaves and lawn waste responsibly. Bring waste to a local organics recycling site.
