BLUMENTHAL ARTS

STORY BY Keith Loria
Alizé Cruz was a self-described “shy kid” growing up, but she took choir, and her teachers encouraged her to try out for the high school musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame
“I ended up getting the lead at 17 and I thought to myself, ‘I think I can do this,’ and so always strived to do this,” she said. “But I come from a family that isn’t really musical, and no one does this as a profession, so I decided I should pursue a normal field.
Born and raised in Las Vegas, after graduating, Cruz studied hospitality for a year but realized it wasn’t her forte. She was still training her voice and auditioning for projects, so left college to focus more on the musical theatre world.
At just 19, she booked her first professional contract, playing Moana in Disney’s When You Wish at the Tuacahn Amphitheatre in Utah. She also played Raven in Bat Out of Hell at the Paris Theatre on the Las Vegas Strip.
Now, Cruz is performing as Queen Katherine Howard in the National Tour of Six, a part she feels extremely connected to.
“She’s the only one who I really relate to and the only one whose story I really, really wanted to tell,” she said.
The thing she loves most about her role is she gets to sing an emotional song that really pushes feelings and vulnerability: the sexy “All I Wanna Do,” about the many suitors in her life.
“To be a voice for some people who may not be able to speak out about their own situations in real life is kind of empowering,” Cruz said. “It’s me on stage saying, ‘I’m with you, I understand you.’ It’s a very important message in my opinion and I love getting to deliver it every single night.”
Landing the role of Katherine Howard didn’t come right away, as Cruz auditioned for Six three different times before finally being offered the chance to cover Boleyn, Howard and Seymour as a rehearsal swing on Norwegian Cruise Lines.
“This show became so hot, so fast, and it became something everyone wanted to audition for,” she said. “My friend had sent it to me to listen to, then a week later my agent sent the submission for me to audition. I flew to New York and was called back to the final round but didn’t get it. It took me three times over three years before I finally did so the third time is the charm.”
After the cruise performances, she was offered the chance to sing “ten amongst these threes” every night on tour as the fifth wife of Henry VIII and was thrilled.
“I’ve been on tour for about a year now and just absolutely love it,” Cruz said. “I am not a fan of routine, and I think it’s so fun to go to different places, see new people and each place has its own beautiful characteristics and its own beautiful audience. Each house is different from another and they always give us different energy. I couldn’t imagine working in the same theater every single day.”
During her off-time, Cruz seeks out local coffee shops and especially enjoys the small-town feel of some of the cities the tour stops in.
“I’m from Las Vegas, so I’m used to a really large, populated city, so it’s really great when we get to see a quaint town with a beautiful theatre,” she
said. “One of my favorite things to do is find hikes or something to do in nature. We work in a dark theatre so it’s nice to get outside.”
This tour marks Cruz’s third different company of Six that she’s been involved in, and she’s made some great friends along the way.
“This is not an easy show, and I think it bonds us because we all have each other’s back,” she said. “We all spend time together outside; we go shopping, we go get something to eat, and we’re just there for one another.”
When the tour is over, Cruz would like to move into the world of film, though performing on Broadway remains tops on her bucket list.
“I do love stage acting, but there’s such a different challenge when it comes to film acting; it’s more intimate and I think the stage helps someone prepare for that,” she said. “But I do want to check off the Broadway item before pursuing another career path.”
Cruz also writes her own music and though she hasn’t released anything yet, she can see herself one day trying to make it in the music biz as well.
The Blumenthal appearance will be Cruz’ first time in North Carolina and she and the cast are excited to visit with Charlotte native Anna Hertel, an alternate on the tour, showing them around.
“Anna tells us it is the most beautiful place, and I can’t wait to see it,” she said.

Mary, born February 18, 1516 (later Queen Mary I).
Catherine also had two other children who died as infants, three stillborn children, and several miscarriages.
Religion, sewing, dancing, a bit more religion.
Probably a type of cancer.
Her refusal to accept that her marriage was invalid; her faith; her dramatic speech to Henry when he had her brought to court to seek the annulment of their marriage.
While Henry fought in France in 1513, Catherine was regent during the Battle of Flodden; when James IV of Scotland was killed in the battle, Catherine wanted to send his body to Henry as a present.

c. 1501 – May 19, 1536
January 25, 1533 (aged 31)
Elizabeth, born September 7, 1533 (later Queen Elizabeth I). Anne also had at least two miscarriages.
Fashion, dancing, flirtation, collecting evangelical works.
Lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon.
Executed on Tower Green, London.
Headlessness; bringing about England’s break with the Pope; having a sixth fingernail.
Because she was fluent in French, Anne would have acted as a translator during the visit of Emperor Charles V to court in 1522.
Lily Allen and Avril Lavigne.

Hemorrhage after the birth of Prince Edward; her child with Henry.
Adele and Sia. Being the “only one he truly loved”; having two troublesome brothers who fought over the regency of the young Prince Edward after King Henry’s death. While Anne Boleyn was still alive, Henry sent Jane a gift of money which she refused, apparently saying there “was no treasure in this world that she valued so much as her honor.”

Anna visited Katherine Howard once she became queen and bowed down to her.
Being chosen from her portrait and then rejected when Henry met her.
When Henry first met Anna of Cleves, he disguised himself, possibly imagining some sort of a romantic reaction. According to a witness, when Henry kissed Anna, she turned away coldly from the hideous stranger molesting her. The witness, Lord Russell, observed that he “never saw His Highness so marvelously astonished.”

Lady-in-waiting to Anna of Cleves; cousin to Anne Boleyn. Executed on Tower Green, London.
Being completely used (and abused) by those with power over her.
From her arrest on November 8, 1541 until her execution three months later, Katherine stayed under house arrest at Syon House; in late January of 1542, an act was passed in Parliament that rendered it treason for a woman to become the king’s wife without “plain declaration before of her unchaste life,” meaning Henry could have her killed.
