THE HOBBY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
DEAR HOBBY CENTER FRIENDS,
We are so glad you are here for one of the most highly anticipated and requested titles of the season, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical, the second production in our 2025-2026 Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center series. This production captures the heart and soul of Neil Diamond’s iconic music, charting his journey from struggling songwriter to international superstar. Diamond’s songs are timeless, his story is deeply human, and the energy of this show is simply electric.

The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts is in the midst of a transformative period guided by a bold strategic vision. Two key goals include expanding artistic programming and strengthening Houston’s performing arts ecosystem. This season marks the third year for Live at the Founders Club, a music series featuring intimate performances in a club environment with full bar, light bites, and a view of the Houston skyline. This season opened in September with two sold-out performances by Grammy Award-winner Miguel Zenón and his Latin jazz ensemble, the Miguel Zenón Quartet. This week, we’re proud to welcome Christina Wells, a talent well known to Houston audiences as she’s appeared at theaters throughout our region and across the nation, including performances right here at the Hobby Center with Principal Resident Company Theatre Under the Stars. For two nights, Christina brings powerhouse vocals and showstopping hits in Divas Across the Decades on November 6 and 7. We feature an exceptional artist each month from January to June 2026. Join us for a completely different Hobby Center experience!
This fall we also celebrate the return of Houston is Inspired, a cornerstone artistic initiative rooted in the Hobby Center’s commitment to supporting Houston-based artists. Premiering its third season on Friday, December 12, this season’s series begins with I’m Freaking Talented by C.J. Emmons produced by The Ensemble Theatre, celebrating their 49th season of storytelling this year. Houston is Inspired continues with Our Road Home by [Jk] Creativ in January and Kāvya: Poetry in Motion by Silambam Houston in May. Over 52 Houston-based arts organizations applied for these coveted residencies this season, reflecting the city’s immense, diverse creative talent. Each selected project receives a $20,000 stipend and a weeklong residency in Zilkha Hall—support valued at more than $60,000 per production.
From internationally acclaimed artists to Houston’s brightest voices, the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts is making strategic investments in creativity and culture, and we’re just getting started.
Good times never seemed so good!

NICK FRADIANI BRINGS CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF NEIL DIAMOND TO A BEAUTIFUL NOISE
STORY BY DARRYN KING
Nick Fradiani, the singer-songwriter and Season 14 “American Idol” winner, was three or four years old when he first saw Neil Diamond live—his first concert experience.
If Fradiani was too young to remember the concert all these years later, he has many distinct memories of bonding with his musician father over a shared love of Diamond’s music. “My whole life was going out and watching my dad gig and play at different places—he would always do Neil Diamond music,” Fradiani told Tamsen Fadal on “The Broadway Show.” Diamond’s The Christmas Album was big at home around Christmastime too, the singer’s smooth, earthy tones and distinctive phrasing making a big impression on the young Nick. “Me and my dad would jokingly sing in the Neil voice: ‘O come, o come Emmanuel…’”
All that childhood practice has come seriously in handy. Fradiani made his Broadway debut portraying Neil Diamond—the singer-songwriter behind such evergreen hits as “Sweet Caroline,” “Cherry, Cherry,” “Red Red Wine” and “I’m a Believer”— in A Beautiful Noise on Broadway. He now leads the national touring production, bringing those Diamond hits to theatres across America.
It’s been a good excuse for Fradiani to resume his Neil Diamond studies in earnest. He spent a year and a half analyzing videos on YouTube and absorbing Diamond’s voice (speaking and singing), mannerisms and general aura. “You want to do it justice every night.”

None of that research prepared Fradiani for the experience of meeting the man himself. “It was more just kind of being in awe,” said Fradiani. “Just being in his presence was really cool.”
If A Beautiful Noise is a culminating moment for Fradiani, the same could be said for Diamond himself. Around 1989—when Fradiani saw Diamond in concert— the singer was set to work on a film project about his experiences as a young contract songwriter, based on his album Beautiful Noise. That movie project never materialized, but the new musical explores that chapter of Diamond’s life and much more besides.
“I’m glad that people are getting to see his real story,” said Fradiani. “This is the first time it’s really been told and this is how he wanted it to be told.”
A few years after his first musical—the national tour of A Bronx Tale in 2019— Fradiani feels totally at home in musical theatre. “I just fell in love with it. I’ve fallen in love with the acting side of it and the camaraderie of the cast and everything. It feels like I’m back in a band, where you have the wins together, you have the losses together—you create something together.”
Plus, Nick and his father have gotten to bond over the music, just like in the old days. “I think it’s probably been the most proud I’ve ever seen my dad— when he comes and gets to see me do these songs.”

PLAYWRIGHT ADAM RAPP ON BUILDING A WORLD OF EXTREMES FOR THE OUTSIDERS
STORY BY KATHY HENDERSON
The Outsiders was published in 1967, the year before Adam Rapp was born, but he vividly remembers devouring S.E. Hinton’s now-classic YA novel in his dorm room at military school. The tale of the orphaned Curtis brothers and their “Greaser” friends, narrated by 14-year-old Ponyboy, struck a nerve with Rapp, the eldest child of a workingclass single mother. Almost four decades after he first encountered the novel, this prolific playwright, novelist, screenwriter and director made his Broadway debut as a musical book writer (with Justin Levine) in an exhilarating adaptation of The Outsiders.
Known for his fondness for dark material and disaffected characters, Rapp is charmingly cheerful on the topic of his new show, which has been in the works for almost a decade. It helps that his first Broadway production, the 2019 drama The Sound Inside, received six Tony nominations, including Best Play, and his latest novel, Wolf at the Table, was published to glowing reviews. As for how he and his baby brother, Anthony, ended up in the top ranks of New York theatre, Rapp says simply, “I have no idea.”
You are the ultimate multi-hyphenate writer and director. How does it feel to add musical theatre book writer to the list?
It’s a shock, honestly. I was a novelist who became a playwright who fell in love with theatre and started directing plays. I had no musical theatre training and I’ve never been a performer, so when I was approached about this, I thought, “Wow, they must be confusing me with somebody else.” Then I heard two songs that [Jonathan Clay and Zach Chapman of] Jamestown Revival had written, and I thought, “How can I not involve myself with this?” The music is so beautiful, and it feels very, very honest and sincere in expressing the way teenage boys think about the world.

When did you read The Outsiders for the first time, and what did you love about it?
I read it when I was 15, and it had a profound effect on me. I come from a similar background as Ponyboy. My mother was a single mom raising three kids on a nurse’s salary. We grew up in an apartment complex in Joliet, Illinois, so I identified with the idea of what “family” means when you come from a broken home that’s lower middle class. It was my first reading experience in which I felt seen, and I think a lot of kids feel that way when they read the book.
What was your goal in turning The Outsiders into a musical? What kind of theatrical experience did you envision?
I wanted it to have almost operatic extremes. Adolescent life is so dramatic. Growing up in this country, there is so much pressure to succeed, so much pressure about sexuality, and I wanted the audience to feel that. I said to my collaborators that I wanted this world to be as brutal as it is tender, as bleak as it is beautiful; we needed to fill in all the extremes, because that’s what being 14, 15 and 16 is like.
I love the fact that you provided stage directions for the riveting rumble between the Greasers and their rival gang, the Socs.
I wrote it because I thought the rumble was one of the most successful parts of the movie. We were all on the same page that this should be a non-musical moment. It should be the sound of bodies and fists meeting flesh and boys crying out, with a soundscape to create the mood. I sat next to Matt Dillon [who played tough guy Dallas in the 1983 film version] when he came to see the show, and he was blown away by the rumble. He told me that Francis Ford Coppola was going to delay the rumble a day or two because they were expecting rain, and Matt convinced him to go ahead and shoot it in the rain. I remember how visceral and intense it was, and I thought how cool it would be if at the end of the rumble, you can’t recognize a Greaser or a Soc because they’re all undone by the rain and the mud. [Choreographers] Rick and Jeff [Kuperman] embraced that idea and took it even further, with big moments that are abstracted toward the end, and [director] Danya [Taymor] added some surprising elements.
In agreeing to write the book, did you realize you were taking on the most challenging element in a musical?
I did not, and it could be frustrating. I control almost everything I do when I’m writing a novel or directing one of my plays or working on TV as a showrunner. In this case, I was one of five people trying to tell this story, so it was humbling. You see your scene get winnowed down and absorbed by songs; I used to joke that I started to feel like I was just the gardener. But I’ve come back around to really loving the process. I’ve been hearing this music for more than nine years, and it still makes me emotional. I feel very lucky to have my words living around these songs.
What was it like to meet S.E. Hinton when you traveled to Tulsa with the cast?
I wasn’t anticipating how incredibly powerful that was going to be. I have a young adult novel called 33 Snowfish that made a list of the top 50 books for young adults, and what was number one? The Outsiders! So I was kind of intimidated to meet Susie. She suffers no fools, she says it like it is, she loves to have a drink and a one-on-one talk; she’s salt of the earth. I guess the word for how I felt is privileged. I can’t wait for her to see the show, especially one of the final moments that involves Ponyboy’s notebook. I’m so proud to be part of the team trying to make her novel come to life in a new way.
The Outsiders comes to Houston as part of Broadway at the Hobby Center November 18-23. For extended cuts of this interview and others, head over to Broadway.com.
