Faculty Lecture: Are Major League Baseball Players Overpaid? An Economic Analysis

Student Center Theater, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus

Edward Coffield, PhD, Associate Professor of Population Health, Hofstra University

Major League Baseball players now sign contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. At first glance, the numbers seem outrageous. But when we step back and look at it through an economic lens, a different question emerges: Do these players generate enough revenue — through ticket sales, merchandise, and media buzz — to justify their pay? In this talk, we will explore the idea of “star power” and how it might explain the massive salaries in professional sports. Whether you are a baseball fan or just curious about how value is measured in the real world, this discussion will give you a new way to think about talent, money, and markets.

Faculty Bio

Dr. Coffield is an associate professor in the Department of Health Professions. He earned his doctorate in economics and teaches courses in health and healthcare economics, health and healthcare policy, and other department courses.
