Crafted WITH Intention
A complete guide to intimate weddings in the Granite State
Gone are the days when intimate weddings meant small, simple ceremonies and low-key celebrations. Now, the beauty of an intimate wedding lies in its value, depth of connection and creative freedom—the blend of both nontraditional and traditional wedding elements that make the day exactly how you envision it to be. Not only do the mountains or the coast of New Hampshire provide the perfect intimate wedding backdrop, but they inspire a story of authenticity and treasured memories, validating that “good things (do) come in small packages”—a sentiment wedding planners like Emma Bogardus bring to life with intention.
Written and compiled by: Emily Heidt and Emma Bogardus
We completely understand: A big wedding isn’t for everyone. Whether you’re looking for more spontaneity or financial flexibility on your special day, intimate weddings (under 60 guests) provide the perfect opportunity to celebrate your relationship in a small, curated way that is unique to you. “There is no right or wrong way to have an intimate wedding, no matter if you’re at the top of a mountain, at a local venue or in your own backyard with your closest friends and family,” says says Emma Bogardus, owner of By Emma B. “You get to create a unique experience for yourself and every single guest—one that is as connected as it is joyful—allowing you to begin your life together by making memories chasing the moments that truly matter, celebrating the people who make them unforgettable.”
Why Intimate Weddings?
1. A Personal Experience
There has been an increase in couples opting for smaller weddings that feel more intimate and intentional, rather than large affairs that resemble a production. By downsizing the guest list, the day becomes less about managing a crowd and more on sharing a meaningful experience with the people who matter most.
A smaller guest list also allows the couple to spend quality time with each person, rather than offering a quick hello in passing. This effort allows guests to feel valued by experiences and thoughtful touches such as, handwritten notes, personalized favors, meaningful conversation and cozy spaces that foster connection.
2. Budget
A smaller guest list does impact the number of mouths to feed. Catering, venue size, invitations and rentals are all a smaller investment when we are preparing for a smaller guest list. Rather than stretching the budget to accommodate a large group, many couples are choosing to invest in the quality of the experience, such as high-quality catering, professional photography or a dream
PRO TIP:
When planning your budget, start by thinking about the kind of experience you want to create, not just how many people you can squeeze in. Instead of saying, “I have X number of guests, how do I make it work with this budget?”, try flipping the mindset to: “I have X amount to spend and this is the kind of experience I want to give—how many people can I realistically invite?” This approach helps you prioritize quality over quantity, ensuring your guests (and you!) have a more thoughtful, enjoyable experience rather than stretching your resources too thin.
3. Flexibility
Smaller weddings give couples the freedom to break away from the traditional mold and plan a day that truly reflects their personalities and priorities. With fewer logistics and guests to manage, there’s more room to get creative, whether that is choosing a unique location (like the woods, your backyard or a family cabin), switching up the timeline or incorporating nontraditional elements like a mid-week ceremony or a sunset vow exchange.
Intimate weddings also allow couples to be more spontaneous and adaptable. Want to ditch the rigid schedule and spend more time mingling with guests? Go for it. Planning a destination elopement on short notice? Totally doable. With less pressure and fewer moving parts, couples can enjoy the freedom to focus on what feels right, not what’s expected.
How to Plan an Intimate Wedding
We know that friends and family love stepping in to help on your big day, but just because they can, doesn’t mean they necessarily should. It is just as much of a gift to them as it is to yourself to have someone else step in and plan, so they can be just as present during your big day as you are. Planning an intimate wedding comes with its own unique set of needs and opportunities, and working with a planner who specializes in them can make a significant difference. Planning an intimate wedding isn’t just a “scaled-down version” of a big one; it’s a completely different experience with its own priorities, logistics and creative possibilities. Here’s how it differs, and why bringing on a planner who understands this niche can elevate the entire process.
1.
Focus Shifts from Logistics to Experience
With fewer guests, the emphasis shifts away from managing largescale logistics (such as shuttles, seating charts or extensive timelines) and toward creating an intentional, personal experience. That might include curated menus, meaningful ceremonies or unique guest experiences, all of which require thoughtful planning and design.
Why a specialized planner helps: They know how to create impactful moments with less, and how to design a day that feels rich and full, not empty or underdone.
2. More Room for Creativity
Intimate weddings offer the freedom to ditch tradition and build a day that reflects your personalities. Want to hike to your ceremony spot? Host dinner under the stars? Replace the reception with a wine tasting? Anything goes, but you’ll need someone who can help shape those ideas into a cohesive and well-executed plan. Why a specialized planner helps: They’re used to working with unique venues and offbeat timelines, and they can turn creative ideas into reality without compromising flow or guest comfort.
3. Smaller Guest List — Higher Guest Experience Expectations
With fewer people, the guest experience becomes more personal and, often, more elevated. Guests will notice the details. Every interaction, every bite, every setting matters more, because it’s experienced up close.
Why a specialized planner helps: They’ll know how to guide you on the subtle but important touches. From intimate seating layouts to custom welcome gifts that help your small celebration feel polished and warm.
4. You’ll Still Need Support — Just Different Kinds of Support
Some couples assume a small wedding means they don’t need a planner, but that often leads to stress. Intimate weddings still require careful coordination, especially if you’re planning at a nontraditional venue, hosting a destination wedding or opting for a more informal setting. Why a specialized planner helps: They understand the unique flow of intimate events and can adapt timelines, vendor needs and even ceremony structure to better fit your guest count and setting.

Whom to Invite to an Intimate Wedding
An intimate wedding means carefully choosing the people who matter most to you (those you truly want to share your special day with). Because the guest list is smaller, it’s about quality over quantity: close family members, best friends, and anyone who plays an important role in your life and relationships.
Here are some common groups couples often prioritize:
• Immediate family: Parents, siblings and grandparents who have been part of your journey.
• Closest friends: The people you turn to in good times and bad, the ones who know you inside and out.
• Special mentors or role models: Individuals who have shaped your lives or supported your relationship.
• Key community members: Close co-workers, neighbors or others with a meaningful connection.
Due to limited space and budget, an intimate wedding guest list often means making tough choices. It’s helpful to focus on who will create the warmest, most joyful atmosphere and who you want to celebrate your love alongside, in a truly personal way.
Planning Tips
1. Prioritize Your Guest List Thoughtfully With fewer spots available, focus on inviting those who truly matter most: close family, lifelong friends and those who will celebrate your love wholeheartedly. Quality over quantity makes the day more meaningful.
2. Choose a Venue that Matches Your Vision Look for venues that feel cozy and intimate without being too large or empty. Unique, personal settings like private homes, boutique inns or scenic outdoor spaces can elevate the experience.
3. Invest in the Guest Experience
Smaller weddings give you the freedom to splurge on elevated dining, custom cocktails, personalized favors or interactive experiences that your guests will remember.
4. Embrace Flexibility and Creativity
Intimate weddings don’t have to follow traditional formats. Consider alternative ceremony spots, customized timelines or blending day-of events like brunch or hikes to create a truly unique celebration.
5. Work with Vendors Experienced in Intimate Weddings
Choose vendors who understand the nuances of smaller weddings and can offer personalized, attentive service from planners to photographers to caterers.

Popular Misconceptions about Intimate Weddings
1. “Intimate weddings have to be elopements.”
Not true! While elopements are intimate by nature, intimate weddings can be just as thoughtfully planned and beautifully designed as larger celebrations, just on a smaller scale, often with more personalization.
2. “Smaller means less romantic.” Actually, intimacy often amplifies romance. Fewer guests mean more meaningful moments, deeper connections and a day that feels truly heartfelt, not rushed or diluted by size.
3. “Guests won’t have as much to do.”
Intimate weddings can be just as engaging, if not more so. With fewer people, you can create rich experiences like curated dinners, interactive ceremonies or unique group activities that wouldn’t work with a larger crowd.
4. “Everything has to be DIY.” Not at all. Intimate weddings are an opportunity to invest in quality, not quantity. Couples often choose professional vendors, stylists, caterers and florists to elevate the experience rather than handle every detail themselves.
5. “Intimate weddings are only for couples looking to save money.” While intimate weddings can be more budget-friendly, that’s not their only appeal. Many couples choose them for the freedom, flexibility and focus on experience, regardless of budget.
6. “You don’t need to focus on details because the wedding is smaller.”
On the contrary! Smaller weddings often require even more attention to detail, as guests will notice everything, from the flowers and lighting to the personalized touches.

What to Look for in an Intimate Wedding Venue
Choosing the right venue is key to creating the perfect intimate wedding experience. Here’s what couples should prioritize:
1. Size and Atmosphere That Feels Cozy, Not Empty
Look for a space that comfortably fits your guest list without feeling too large or impersonal. A venue that feels warm and inviting helps guests feel connected and engaged throughout the day.
2. Flexibility and Personalization
Intimate weddings often break traditional molds, so look for venues that are open to creative setups. Whether that’s unique seating arrangements, customized catering options or alternative ceremony locations on-site.
3. Beautiful Backdrops and Natural Ambiance
Smaller weddings shine in venues with character! Charming estates, cozy barns, boutique hotels or scenic outdoor spots are the perfect setting. Setting also adds atmosphere and requires less décor, allowing your celebration to feel authentic and effortless.
4. Amenities and Accessibility
Make sure the venue has the necessary amenities (restrooms, parking, accessibility) to keep your guests comfortable, especially since your focus is on quality time and meaningful experiences.
5. Privacy and Exclusivity
Intimate weddings often benefit from private or semi-private spaces where your celebration won’t feel interrupted. Privacy lets you relax and enjoy your day fully with those closest to you.

Sarah and Dane Goudreault
Why did you choose an intimate wedding?
I’ve known forever that I wanted to get married on top of a mountain. When Dane and I started wedding planning, we were well on our way through hiking the NH 48 together, and it felt natural for us to include hiking in our day. Neither of us is a huge fan of being the center of attention, so we felt relieved when we made this decision to keep it small. We decided on North Sugarloaf in Bethlehem, and then we had to figure out the rest. We were committed to keeping a low budget to save for our house and life together. Our first thought was just to do a dinner at a brewery or rent an Airbnb, but then we came across the Adair Inn and Emma. Emma connected us to some amazing vendors and helped us to create an incredible vision for the reception. Having a small wedding allowed us to create a rich and beautiful experience, while keeping the costs relatively low (as weddings go).

What tips do you have for future intimate wedding couples?
With a small wedding, a lot of people in your life won’t be invited. If there are people on the edge of your invite list who you are going back and forth between inviting or not, include them if you can. I’m sad I didn’t find the space for one extra chair.
Be brutal about plus ones. They will stand out much more in an intimate setting. Unless there is a strong reason to invite them, you don’t want 25 of your favorite people and five dates you’ve never met and will never see again.
What was your favorite part of your special day?
Instead of having one or two people give a speech, we invited all 28 guests to give a two-minute toast during the end of dinner and dessert. About 10 guests took us up on the offer and it is one of the most beautiful, and loving moments of my life. I have a vivid memory of those speeches—sitting together with everyone at the long and beautifully appointed table, with the gorgeous flower installation above, and laughing and crying as people told stories about us individually and together and wished us happiness in the future.
Stephanie and Steve Peters
Why did you choose an intimate wedding?
My husband and I knew we didn’t want to elope and not include our closest family and friends. There are a few key people that mean a lot to us and who we spend a considerable amount of time with regularly—those types of relationships are what really defined our guest list. We didn’t want to spend a ton of extra time on pleasantries or catching up with people we hadn’t seen in years, so we trimmed down our guest list to a number where we could have a more intimate venue that we could throw a party at. That’s what our day was for us—we had a more traditional-style ceremony, seated dinner of our favorite meal and then we made the rest of the night feel like an after-party vibe where we were dancing, singing, roasting marshmallows and soaking in a ton of great memories with 30 of our closest people!
What tips do you have for future intimate wedding couples?
If you feel in your gut like this is what’s meant for you, GO FOR IT! We were very nervous at the start of the planning process about what others would think or how the smaller event would be received by certain family members or relatives who may not have been invited. While it’s not always the most fun conversation to share with someone that may not be invited to your wedding, people were entirely receptive and understanding once we explained it! Truly, there is no wrong way to celebrate your love and the start of the next chapter of your life.
PHOTOS BY KELSEY CONVERSE PHOTOGRAPHY
What was your favorite part of your special day?
We were able to personalize nearly every piece of the wedding with it being smaller. Being able to start the day with our routine as a family and set the tone for the day as calm and comfortable also helped us stay very present the rest of the day and reminded us to soak it all in. The beauty of a smaller or less traditional venue meant we were able to set the schedule of the day, which helped us be able to prioritize the moments that meant the most to us. Our venue also ended up being on the lake where we vacation every summer— another unforgettable reason as to why we chose to have the wedding that we did.

Every story has a beginning, and ours begins at a European ski resort where our couple meets on a ski lift for the first time. Unafraid to carve their own path in life and on the slopes, they want to weave personal details from their story into the wedding design.
A nod to the après-ski lifestyle—a French term meaning “after skiing”— the reception design embodies the cozy, cheerful atmosphere of a ski chalet. From European-inspired menus to skiing-themed character illustrations, the couple hopes to preserve the magic of winter for all of their treasured guests to enjoy.
Formerly known as the Manor on Golden Pond, the beautiful countryside property was renamed Van Horn Estate to honor the couple who built the mansion in 1907. The estate overlooks the White Mountains and Squam Lake, an idyllic backdrop for intimate winter weddings in Holderness, New Hampshire.
The boldly painted cobalt blue walls, wainscoting and wallchieres sconces speak to its storied history. Wrapped in a gallery wall of framed vintage artwork, the dining room is bursting with personality, ensuring every guest feels right at home.
“A venue is the first thing you need when you create a wedding design,” says Mower. Furbish recommends that couples “select a space that allows us to work within the existing design.”
Incorporating the couple’s meet-cute into the stationery, stationer Emma Sullivan of Seabird Studios unveils the gorgeous invitation suite. The couple’s personality shines through in the skiing-inspired illustrations on the envelope liner, detail card, RSVP card and beyond.
By expanding the color palette to include mustard yellow, red and a lighter shade of blue, Sullivan uses pops of color to intrigue guests well before the wedding weekend. For an artistic flair, a custom wedding logo elevates the design, featuring hand-drawn antlers with two joined wedding rings.
The bold patterned table linens and napkins bring in an element of winter, accenting the cobalt blue already in the room. “We always want to add layers of dimension to our designs,” says Lewis. Wooden flatware complements the wooden chargers, adding depth and warmth to each table setting.
“The entire tablescape felt like a modern take on New England history,” says photographer Robert Aveau. The illustrated menu booklet reminds Aveau of a New England supper club with its quirky animal characters and charming design. A feast for the eyes, florist Mary Trombley of Lotus Floral Designs is the visionary behind the cascading florals, greenery and lush vegetation. “Winter is all about gathering around a table, so I wanted the florals to reflect this time of year,” says Trombley.
To create a moody atmosphere, Trombley selected hydrangea, phalaenopsis orchids, clematis and gorgeous calla lilies. Oversized purple and green artichokes are arranged to look like giant blooms, and bunches of grapes mirror the waterfall effect of the table design. Figs, pears and raspberries provide the finishing touch.
The bridal bouquet is overflowing with freshly picked florals and greenery, including garden roses, anthurium, hellebore and eucalyptus. Hanging green Amaranthus adds interest and dimension against the couple’s classic wedding attire.
Provided by Madeleine’s Daughter, the strapless, dropped-waist gown features a vintage silhouette that is still on trend. The structured bodice and voluminous pleated skirt create the perfect visual contrast.
“We didn’t want to do a traditional long-sleeved dress,” said Mower. Instead, a delicate neck scarf offers a subtle touch of winter elegance. “Since the space and design were so maximalist, the bride’s understated dress, hair and makeup help her stand out,” says Lewis. Before the cocktail hour begins, the bride changes into a more playful look: a white mini dress with a classic boat neckline and blusher wedding veil. Beaded pearl embellishments and sheer bridal sleeves add a touch of sophistication to the dress.
An eye-catching dessert station, courtesy of cake artist Jaime Melfi of Autumn Nomad, captivates guests as they enter the dining room. The couple opts for a nontraditional dessert tower with a curated assortment of fresh fruit, edible flowers, fudgy brownie bites and chocolate truffles—all served in coupe glasses.
“Interactive guest experiences make the day more memorable,” adds Furbish. “We recommend creating multiple photo opportunities for guests throughout the day.”
The night comes to a close with Melfi’s showstopping two-tier centerpiece cake. The top tier is adorned with torn and peeled layers of fondant and rice paper, adding textured elegance amidst climbing berries and greenery. Delicate rows of pearls on the bottom tier blend beautifully with the bride’s cocktail look. The bride and groom share a slice before making their way back to the bustling table.
Filled to the brim with jovial guests, the dining room pulses with laughter and cheer. As the guests lift their glasses to toast the newlyweds, the bride and groom lock eyes and wordlessly plot their escape into the night. Finally tucked away in the great halls of the estate, they embrace the next chapter—their own history in the making.

Weddings at Owl’s Nest Resort in the White Mountains of New Hampshire offer an exceptional blend of natural beauty, versatile venues, and thoughtful amenities that make for unforgettable ceremonies and receptions. Nestled on 600+ acres with sweeping mountain views and forested surroundings, Owl’s Nest provides both dramatic scenery and comfort.
One of the centerpiece venues at the resort is The Lakehouse, which combines lakeside charm with mountain elegance. It’s partially built over Lake Harold and features a wraparound deck, large windows that let in natural light, a modern farmhouse design with wooden beams and chandelier accents, and two getting-ready suites. It can host up to 200 guests, making it suitable for both sizable wedding celebrations and more intimate gatherings.
For couples more drawn to outdoor or elegance, The Sunset Pavilion is a favorite. Its fieldstone patios and open-air design provide sweeping views, especially toward Franconia Notch, making the surroundings themselves part of the décor.
The staff at Owl’s Nest emphasize full service in planning and executing weddings. From menu customization (using their in-house culinary team) to coordinating vendors, rehearsals, and the schedule of events, they aim to make the process smoother.
Additionally, lodging is included as part of the package, with a variety of on-site accommodations available—ranging from guest rooms and suites to private homes— allowing wedding parties and guests to stay conveniently close to the celebration.
Because the White Mountains are so beautiful, the timing of your wedding can have a huge impact. Peak scenic value comes in late spring, summer, and especially fall when foliage is vibrant. Owl’s Nest makes sure there are rainy-day or cooler weather contingency plans (such as indoor options) so that nothing has to be sacrificed.
Winter weddings off an intimate and cozy atmosphere with a variety of winter sports onsite and nearby.
Owl’s Nest Resort is the perfect location for your White Mountain destination wedding.
