Doch die Geschichte hinter dem bekannten Postkartenmotiv, dem „Turm im See“, ist weit weniger idyllisch.

Die romanische Kirche aus dem 14. Jahrhundert ist stummer Zeitzeuge einer verantwortungslosen See-Stauung kurz nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges.
Seit 1922 wütete in Italien der Faschismus. Im Jahre 1939 reichte der Großkonzern "Montecatini" ein Projekt ein, den Reschen- und Graunersee um 22 Meter zu stauen. Die Bevölkerung von Reschen und Graun wurde dabei völlig übergangen. Nach Verzögerungen aufgrund des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurde 1947, nur zwei Jahre nach Kriegsende, vonseiten der Montecatini bekannt gegeben, dass die Arbeiten am Stauprojekt unverzüglich wieder aufgenommen würden. Die Bevölkerung von Graun und Reschen versuchte über eine politische Intervention den Weiterbau zu verhindern, leider ergebnislos. Verzweifelt musste die Bevölkerung zusehen, wie rücksichtslos sie von Grund, Haus und Hof vertrieben wurde.
1950 im Sommer war es soweit: die Schleusen wurden geschlossen und der See gestaut. 677 Hektar Grund und Boden wurden überflutet, beinahe 150 Familien wurden ihrer Existenz beraubt und die Hälfte davon zur Auswanderung gezwungen.
Die Entschädigungen waren sehr bescheiden. Die Bewohner von Graun hatte man notdürftig in ein eiligst aufgestelltes Barackenlager am Ausgang des Langtauferertales untergebracht.
Heute steht er da, der Turm mitten im See, als stummer Ankläger und als Mahnmal für zu Unrecht angerichtetes Leid. Ihn allein ließ man stehen, der die Erinnerung an das malerische Dorf Graun wach hält. Heute steht er unter Denkmalschutz und ist Wahrzeichen der Gemeinde Graun. Eine kleine Wiedergutmachung erfolgte erst 25 Jahre nach der Seestauung, indem man begann, einen Teil des Ufers zu sanieren und einige Hektar Grund wieder aufzuschütten.

Nel 1939 lo Stato concesse al consorzio "Montecatini" la costruzione di una diga in basso al "Mittersee", la quale doveva permettere un ristagno d'acqua fino a 22 metri. La popolazione di Curon e Resia era totalmente trascurata. Dopo ritardi dovuti alla seconda guerra mondiale, nel 1947 la "Montecatini" annunció l'immediato proseguimento della costruzione del lago artificiale.
La popolazione di Curon e Resia hanno cercato di azionare tutte le leve politiche possibili per impedire una prosecuzione dei lavori, ma senza esito. Disperatamente la popolazione dovette assistere alla cacciata senza riguardi della loro terra, casa e fattoria.
Nell’estate del 1950 la fine. Le cateratte si chiudono e l'acqua del lago sale giorno dopo giorno. 677 ettari di terra sono immersi nell'acqua, 150 famiglie circa sono state rubate della loro esistenza, di cui la metà costrette ad emigrare.
I risarcimenti per tutto questo danno erano molto modesti. Gli abitanti di Curon furono provvisoriamente allocati in baracche all'uscita della Vallelunga, costruite agli estremi.
Oggi il campanile sommerso nell'acqua sembra come un accusatore muto, un monumento per dei dolori causati ingiustamente. L'unico pezzo rimasto in vita, per ricordare il pittoresco paesino di Curon è il campanile, sotto la protezione delle belle arti e oggi il simbolo del comune di Curon.
Un piccolo ristorno ambientale è stato fatto solamente venticinque anni dopo l'ingorgo, con un piano di risanamente delle rive e la conseguente riconquista di alcuni ettari di terreno agricolo.
The romanesque 14th Century church bears testimony to the irresponsible decision of the State to locate a dam there after the end of the Second World War.
Fascism raged in Italy since 1922. In 1939, the large concern "Montecatini" submitted a project to dam the Resia and Grauner lakes by 22 meters. The population of Reschen and Graun was completely ignored. After delays due to the Second World War, in 1947, only two years after the end of the war, Montecatini announced that work on the damming project would be resumed immediately.
The population of Graun and Reschen tried to prevent further construction through political intervention, unfortunately without success. Desperately, the population had to watch how ruthlessly they were driven from their homes and farms.
In 1950 in summer the time had come: the locks were closed and the lake was dammed. 677 hectares of land were flooded, almost 150 families were deprived of their livelihood and half of them were forced to emigrate.
The compensation was very modest. The inhabitants of Graun had been accommodated in a makeshift barracks camp at the exit of the Langtauferer Valley.
Today it stands there, the tower in the middle of the lake, as a mute accuser and as a memorial for unjustly caused suffering. It was left standing alone, keeping alive the memory of the picturesque village of Graun. Today it is a listed building and a landmark of the community of Graun.
A small compensation was only made 25 years after the damming of the lake by starting to redevelop part of the shore and refill a few hectares of land.

Graun im Vinschgau ist bekannt für seinen romanischen Kirchturm, der seit dem Jahr 1950 aus dem Reschensee herausragt und jeden der vorbeiläuft, neugierig auf seine Geschichte macht. Der aus dem fernen Jahr 1355 stammende Glockenturm zeugt davon, dass hier einst ein Dorf gewesen sein muss.
Curon Venosta è conosciuto soprattutto per il suo campanile romanico che emerge dal Lago di Resia, meta preferita dei turisti che transitano in zona, curiosi di conoscere la sua storia. Questo campanile, risalente al 1355, testimonia che una volta, dove ora c'è il lago, si estendeva un villaggio.
Graun is best known for its Romanesque bell tower that emerges from Lake Resia and passersby are understandably curious about its history. This steeple, dating back to 1355, indicates that there once was a village down below.

Reschen liegt direkt auf der Passhöhe in 1.508 m Seehöhe und ist Nahtstelle zwischen Nord- und Südtirol am Grenzübergang Reschenpass, der schon zur Römerzeit ein wichtiger Übergang über die Alpen war. Die Ortschaft Reschen ist heute ein quirliger Grenzort am Dreiländereck zu Schweiz und Österreich. Nordöstlich vom Dorf entspringt die Etsch, der zweitlängste Fluss Italiens.
Resia si trova sull'omonimo passo, a 1.508 metri di altitudine, ed è il crocevia diretto tra il Tirolo austriaco e l'Alto Adige. Fin dall'epoca degli antichi Romani Resia è stato importante passaggio sulla via tra Nord e Sud che attraversava le Alpi. Oggi è un centro attivo, situato al confine con Austria e Svizzera. A nord-est del paese nasce il fiume Adige che, con i suoi 415 km lunghezza, è il secondo fiume più lungo d'Italia.
Resia is located up on the Pass itself, at a height of 1,508 meters, connecting Austrian Tyrol with South Tyrol. Since Roman times, the Resia Pass has been an important milestone on the north-south road crossing the Alps. Nowadays it is an active center, located on the border with Austria & Switzerland. The river Adige rises northeast of the village and is the second longest river in Italy.

Das Dorf liegt idyllisch an den Ufern des natürlichen Haidersees, der - so wie sein "großer Bruder" Reschensee - im Winter ein Ort für Eissportler und im Sommer ein Naturparadies für Fischer ist. Beeindruckend ist das Panorama von hier aus auf das imposante Ortlermassiv.
