JOTA for Cubs
Here are some activities for Cub Scouts to explore JOTA and radio.
Cub Scout Sound Waves
You need a ball of string, plastic cups, paperclips, scissors, pencils, markers, worksheets on how sound travels.
In this exercisesCubs build simple “string telephones” to explore how sound vibrations travel , linking to the concept of how radio waves carry information.
Objectives:
• Experiment with how sound moves.
• Compare mechanical and radio communication.
• Practice teamwork and observation.
Step 1 – Ask: “How do radios send voices without wires?”
Step 2 - Use two cups and a taut string to make a string telephone.
Step 3 - Try different string lengths or materials; note when sound is cleare or weaker.
Step 4 - Explain how radio does the same job — but with invisible waves instead of string!
Our Chief Scout studied electronic engineering and has always been fascinated by radios and computers. He knows how exciting it can be to talk to people all over the world, learn about different places, and share your story. That’s why he is delighted to support Cub Scouts to take part in Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) and learn how radio connects people everywhere.
