The NBA is officially back and the regular season tips off with a doubleheader Tuesday, Oct. 21, as the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder host the Houston Rockets at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers facing the Golden State Warriors at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Both matchups air live on NBC and Peacock.
The Oklahoma City Thunder enter the season with high expectations after last season, when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earned both league most valuable player and MVP of the final. Then 26 years old, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 32.7 points, 6.4 assists and 5.0 rebounds, ultimately leading the Thunder to their first NBA championship since the franchise moved from Seattle. Expect them to receive the opposition’s best every night, especially in their season opener against the new-look Houston Rockets.
The Rockets tackled their offseason with intention, successfully acquiring 15-time NBA all-star Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns as part of a historic seven-team trade. Entering this season, the Rockets feature a roster mixed with young talent and playoff-tested contributors as
they get set to face an elite team on their championship stage.
In California, the second game of opening night features LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers against Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors for what will be their 56th matchup, including four NBA finals.
James, entering his 23rd season, averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds last year, while Curry, entering his 17th season, averaged 24.5 points, 6.0 assists and 4.4 rebounds. Both players remain crucial to their respective franchises and will look to rebound after disappointing playoff exits last season.

Yet again, it’s that time of the year. Leaves are crisp and colorful, wardrobes are stuffed with chunky knits and hearty meals for two are set at the dining table. It’s cuffing season, and what better way to spend cozy nights in with a special someone than to press play on a returning romcom for our times. “Nobody Wants This” is back for its second season, premiering 10 brand-new episodes Thursday, Oct. 23, on Netflix.
Kristen Bell (“The Good Place”) and Adam Brody (“The Kid Detective,” 2020) return as the unlikely couple in love: relationship podcaster Joanne Williams and rabbi Noah Roklov. The first season saw them stumble through getting to know each other, weighing their very different backgrounds against their palpable chemistry, hitting several road blocks on the way to commitment.
Joanne, an agnostic podcast co-host on the rise, unexpectedly fell for Noah, a faithful rabbi whose dedication to the synagogue and its congregants was unfamiliar to her. With the culture clash between Noah’s Jewish family and community, and Joanne’s circle of majority unbelievers being the main hurdle in the lovebirds’ fledgling relationship, another was Joanne’s career.
The podcast that Joanne co-hosts with her sister, Morgan (Justine Lupe, “Succession”), centered around the two oversharing about their love lives and giving out advice, became a controversial subject at the meeting-his-parents stage for the way the siblings candidly discuss the realities of dating.
Together with her borderline embarrassing lack of knowledge of Jewish culture and customs, Joanne fails to make a positive
first impression with Noah’s family. A few knee-jerk overcorrections don’t land her much closer to the Roklovs’ good side, either.
At the same time, Morgan had grown frustrated with Joanne over her lack of commitment to their show and single-minded focus on Noah as the podcast started to gain traction. A sort of balance was struck in the first season’s finale when the sisters buried the hatchet and Joanne admitted she was not ready to convert to Judaism, returning to herself again.
The upcoming season sees Joanne’s rivalry with Noah’s mother, Bina (Tovah Feldshuh, “Harlan Coben’s Shelter”), deepen, the pair staring daggers at each other from opposite ends of the stands of Noah’s Matzah Ballers basketball game in the official trailer. While Joanne keeps one eye on Bina, more relationship challenges start forming in every other direction. Now that Joanne and Noah have established themselves as an official couple, it is time for everyone in their lives to start asking them what’s next.
Marriage, babies and faith compromises are all on the table for dinner party conversation as the new couple merge their individual lives over dinner parties and family events. Never one to mince words, Morgan warns Joanne in the trailer while the podcast mics are hot, “the relationship isn’t solid until you’re out of the honeymoon phase.” It’s all fun and games until you’re wondering what your partner is really thinking at a friend’s baby shower.
Also returning this season are Timothy Simons (“Veep”) as Noah’s brother
Jackie Tohn (“GLOW”) as Sasha’s wife, Esther; Michael Hitchcock (“Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” 2021) and Stephanie Faracy (“Sneaky Pete”) as Joanne and Morgan’s parents, Henry and Lynne; Paul Ben-Victor (“The Wire”) as Noah’s father, Ilan; and Sherry Cola (“Good Trouble”) and D’Arcy Carden (“A League of Their Own”) as Joanne’s friends Ashley and Ryann.

Q: It’s been good to see Robin Wright doing a series again with “The Girlfriend.” Was “Santa Barbara” the first time she had a continuing role on a show?
A: It technically was, though she had been in two episodes of the 1983-84 NBC drama “The Yellow Rose.” Wright began her career as a model, then landed the part of Kelly Capwell — a member of a privileged California family — when NBC debuted the daytime serial “Santa Barbara” in 1984. She would stay until 1988, with other opportunities presenting themselves after she played the title role for director Rob Reiner in the enduringly popular 1987 movie “The Princess Bride.”
For many years after that, Wright focused on movie work, some of the highlights being “Forrest Gump” (1994), “Moll Flanders” (1996), “Message in a Bottle” (1999) and “The Pledge” (2001). She returned to television in “Empire Falls,” HBO’s 2005 adaptation of Richard Russo’s novel about residents of an economically challenged Maine town. The project also featured Paul Newman, with whom Wright had worked in the aforementioned “Message in a Bottle.”
Wright also appeared on HBO in the first season (2011) of the Laura Dern-starring series “Enlightened,” which Dern created with Mike White (“The White Lotus”). Then came a show that largely transformed Wright’s image and stature: the Netflix drama “House of Cards,” an adaptation of a British miniseries. She played Claire Underwood, the first lady and eventual president of the United States, and she earned six Primetime Emmy nominations for the program during its 2013-2018 run. She also directed 10 of its episodes and was an executive producer of it for the last three of its six seasons.

Generational talent: Ben Stiller discusses his parents’ storied careers
As one of the most notable actors, directors and producers of his generation (with his latest endeavor, the Emmy-winning “Severance,” making waves internationally), Ben Stiller (“Zoolander,” 2001) has plenty of people to thank for his success — but two names rise above the rest. A touching tribute to his parents, Stiller’s one-of-a-kind documentary, “Stiller & Meara: Nothing is Lost,” makes its debut Friday, Oct. 24, on Apple TV+.
According to the streamer, “Stiller & Meara” sees Stiller “[telling] the story of his parents, comedy icons Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara,” while “exploring their impact both on popular culture and at home, where the lines between creativity, family, life and art often blurred.
“In the process,” Apple TV+ continues, “Stiller turns the camera on himself and his family to examine Jerry and Anne’s enormous influence on their lives, and the generational lessons we all can learn from those we love.”
While younger readers may not be familiar with the elder Stiller and his wife, Anne, plenty remember the duo as comedic superstars from the 1960s and 1970s. With appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” “Rhoda,” “Archie Bunker’s Place” and, eventually, on their own sitcom — “The Stiller and Meara Show” — the couple made a strong impression on viewers, generating laughs well into the 2000s. While their comedy act eventually split up, Stiller and Meara had a marriage that spanned six decades, during which they gave birth to two children: Ben and Amy Stiller.
Meara
When Jerry and Anne eventually died — Anne in 2015 and Jerry in 2020 — Ben found himself “[digging] into the vast treasure trove of recordings, footage, letters and other ephemera with which they documented their personal and professional lives,” explains a program from the New York Film Festival. And thus, “Stiller & Meara” was born.
While the documentary offers a comprehensive look at the couple’s career, it also inevitably turns to the Stiller children, both with impressive careers of their own.
“I think the deeper that you go into learning about your parents, and not about them as parents but just as people, always gives you a different perspective on your own life. I really do feel like the experience of delving in gave me more empathy for them,” says Stiller.
Featuring fascinating interviews, never-before-seen footage and celebrity guests, “Stiller & Meara” premieres Friday, Oct. 24, on Apple TV+.
